What Do Guests Think? An Analysis of 1000 Guest Reviews

Reviewer Portrait

The following executive summary is based on a comprehensive and impartial AI analysis of guest reviews. Keep in mind that all units are individually owned, and review scores among units can vary considerably.

Travelers consistently love the Ilikai’s location and classic Waikiki vibe. Set at the quieter end of Waikiki by the marina and Hilton lagoon, it’s an easy walk to beaches, Ala Moana Center, shops, restaurants, and tour pick‑ups. Many units have sweeping ocean/marina views from large lanais—perfect for sunsets, Friday-night fireworks, and even watching surfers. Guests appreciate having full kitchens to save on meals, plus thoughtful extras like beach chairs, towels, coolers, and boogie boards. Onsite perks (two pools, coffee shop, market, restaurants including the rooftop Pesca) and generally smooth, responsive host communication round out an easy, family‑friendly stay.

The experience can vary by unit because they’re individually owned. Many condos are renovated, spotless, and well equipped; others feel dated or show wear (tired furnishings, sticky sliders/blinds, limited cookware, or deep‑cleaning needs). Common recurring themes: AC can be noisy or struggle in west‑facing units; pools are smaller and close early; elevators can be slow during busy periods; valet parking is convenient but pricey (marina/self‑parking is a popular alternative). Laundry is usually shared on each floor (not in‑unit), which some guests didn’t expect. Urban realities—traffic noise, pigeons on balconies, occasional construction next door, and rare false fire alarms—come up, and a temporary labor strike at a neighboring property made daytime noise a factor for some recent stays.

Overall sentiment is strongly positive, with many repeat guests who’d “stay again” for the views, walkability, and condo convenience over resort frills. If you’re sensitive to heat or noise, request an updated unit with solid AC and consider a higher floor or lagoon/marina exposure; confirm bed layouts, laundry setup, and parking plans in advance. Corner units with two lanais are especially popular. Expect an iconic, older building with plenty of charm and modern comforts—more “home base with a postcard view” than full‑service luxury—and you’ll likely have a great stay.

Check in was super easy with door code. Instructions were clear to get to the hotel and to get into the room. Perfect setup for me, my spouse, a 24 year old and 12 year old. Pretty view from the balcony. Lots of food options in hotel, including Dave’s Ice Cream which was delicious! A market downstairs as well if you need snacks, drinks, etc. Always easy to get an Uber quickly right from the main entrance of the hotel. Could easily walk to the lagoon and beach from the back side of the hotel. Would recommend staying here for your Oahu adventures!

We just got back from our stay in Oahu. The place was super comfortable and clean. The kitchen was a little outdated but it had everything we needed. The view was outstanding. We had our breakfast on the lanai every morning. Location is very convenient.

The view of this room was incredible, had an amazing ocean and firework show view. I wanted to love this room but unfortunately my 1 week stay was not the best experience. Day 1 started with having a leak in the rest room ceiling. Water leaked on toilet while trying to use it. The property manager was very responsive and sent a repair quickly. Unfortunately it did not end there, the room appears to have a roach infestation. We encountered numerous roaches big and small. The property manager was understanding and offered a cleaning and full/partial refund and an additional deep cleaning on day 2. Unfortunately the cleaning did not do much, because there were still roaches after that. No other rooms available and with a full itinerary did not have time to look for any other last minute hotel options close to our activities we had planned. This made for an uncomfortable stay and we definitely did not get to use the kitchen as planned due to concerns with roaches. We tried to keep food to a minimum in the room and only ate on the balcony and it was not enough for the roach issue. Unfortunately we had to take extra precautions when getting back home to avoid spreading the roach infestation to my home. The property owner is very nice and response but the roach issue was a big problem for me.

The place was great, big enough for the whole family and had everything we need. The kitchen had all cooking supplies that we needed and we even got to do an early check-in.

Rating Details: The property manager was very helpful. The vacation rental was spotless. I was very happy with the location. I was very satisfied with the condition of the vacation rental. Overall, I recommend this vacation rental. Reviewer Comments: The place was very nice and clean. It has a parasol for the beach, a body board for the kids, and even a cooler and beach lounge chairs! This place is highly recommended and I'd stay here again in a heartbeat. Also the staff at Alii Beach Rentals were superb and supportive throughout our stay.

Great condo with a beautiful view and prime location next to the Lagoon. We had everything we needed (pots/pans, dishes) to be able to cook and not eat out every meal. Beds were comfortable. The WiFi was not working the first day but I reset it and had no issues. One outdated item in the instructions is that the laundry room now takes credit cards now. So you don’t need to get cash and coins. Would recommend if you are looking for a spot in Waikiki.

The Ilikai was completed in 1964, so the place kind of has a retro charm. The downstairs open-air lobby and shops are nice as is the outdoor landingthat faces the harbor. Although the place is always bustling, it’s not as crowded as some of the areas of Waikiki just a few blocks away. The room has very good air conditioning, water, plumbing, shower and all of the other niceties, such as a coffee pot, microwave, conventional oven and toaster oven. The furniture and beds are kind of dorm room grade or that sort of thing. No frills but adequate. The two balconies are nice. They provide linens, towels, and beach towels. We brought a minimal amount of clothes and made good use of the laundry facilities that are just right down the hall.Very good communication in emails from the property manager. Easy to check in and out without having to interact with a front desk.We used the valet service, and that was the way to go! They did an excellent job.We had five adults in our party and we all stayed comfortably.

Rating Details: The property manager was very helpful. The vacation rental was spotless. I was more than happy with the location. I was satisfied with the condition of the vacation rental. Overall, I recommend this vacation rental. Reviewer Comments: Our stay at the Ilikai was pleasant. The accommodation was nice and a good place to call home for our week in July. The hotel and property are older, although remodeled there are still older features like the sliding glass doors and elevators. We did see elevator maintenance workers at least three times. Escalators from valet area to main lobby were out of order all but one day of our stay. The property had everything we needed! Kitchen was well equipped, there was beach equipment - chairs, towels, boogie boards, ice chest and umbrellas. There were extra folding chairs, pillows and blankets. Having a washer/dryer in unit was also helpful. Lots of fans and great air conditioner! Property has been updated inside. Few items need further updating like the backside of the tattered black out drapes and the repair sheet rock replacement holes in the ceiling. Toto toilet controls were also not working during our stay. Love how close it was to the lagoon and the beach. Not a lot of restaurant options too close. There is a hotel restaurant and yummy ice cream and coffee shop on property. Ala Moana shopping mall is close enough to walk, it’s a bit of a trek though, not just across the street. We did walk down (20-25 minutes) to the bustling restaurant shopping area. You can walk on beach or through streets. There are two ABC stores close by. Valet parking was $45/day. They got the car quickly when needed with the exception of check out times of mornings, it was busy then and took about 10 minutes to get car. Price was comparable to other hotels in area. Overall this was a nice place to call home for the week with great views and a zen vibe. Enjoyed being just outside of the business of Waikiki. Would stay again.

When we arrived we went straight to our room. The code had not been programmed yet for some reason but the owner answered the phone and quickly corrected that. The room was spacious, beds comfy, kitchen well stocked, with lots of extra towels and bath linens. The beach towels, boogie boards and cooler were nice to have.

Location wise - this place is GREAT. Prime location in Waikiki, walking distance to the beach, good restaurants and the lagoon that we absolutely loved. Views of the harbor and ocean from the balcony were also top notch, and a great way to start and end each day. The unit itself is smaller than it appears in photos, and does feel dated. If you are looking for locals beach-shack vibes, this is perfect. If you are just looking for a no-frills spot to crash each night, this is your spot. The decor, appliances, and kitchen/bathroom are pretty dated. The walls are thin, and we could hear the people above us walking (or stomping?) around daily. The underground parking garage is a plus, and as long as you go in with the right impressions, you will be happy. I will say the photos look a little nicer than the unit in-person, and there was an underwhelming vibe until we opened the curtains and saw the view. All in all, we would recommend if you don't want the hotel experience in Waikiki.

10 day stay with my wife while visiting our daughter. The building is nice with some fun history to it. Many amenities right on site and right at the start of Waikiki beach. The on-site convenience store and car rental was very helpful. The unit itself was basic and clean and had a full kitchen. The location is good for transportation to everything in the area. Check in and out was simple and exactly as described. All correspondence was quickly returned. Really for the price, location and full kitchen it couldn’t be beat.

Rating Details: The property manager was very helpful. The vacation rental was spotless. I was more than happy with the location. I was more than satisfied with the condition of the vacation rental. Overall, I recommend this vacation rental. Reviewer Comments: The Ilikai is centrally placed in Waikiki. Easy to access the beach just a few paces away! So many places to walk to and explore around you. It’s a rather busy place. Lots of tourists. The condo was comfortable and loved having a kitchen. The bed was comfy. The bathroom rain shower was awesome. The only downside was the traffic noise outside. It was bearable but book an Oceanside view to prevent that. One morning I was woken up by a group on strike with a bullhorn. Otherwise it was very pleasant and the coffee shop downstairs was my go-to every morning for caffeine!

The location…is ok! The unit faces the busy Main Street and protestors showed up twice at 7:15 am. You have to walk to the beach, it’s only close to a lagoon. The unit states it sleeps 5, absolutely not true unless you have little kids. The pull out sofa isn’t a true pullout, so it’s not big enough for two teens. There’s not nearly enough bedding. It’s a resort, but no gym access. Laundry is 6.00 per load. Having a kitchen was important to us, and their description states they have a fully stocked kitchen…NOT TRUE! There is 1 fry pan and two pots! Parking - the price listed in their description is not the correct price. Overall, the check in and out process was easy, we appreciated the beach chairs/towels, primary bed is comfortable.

Overall, I recommend this vacation rental. Reviewer Comments: I couldn’t have picked a better place for the price. The location was perfect. The size was perfect. The kitchen was perfect. It was the best check in process. I ever dealt with didn’t have to speak with nobody at the front desk. I was given the permissions to enter with code in the vacation started. It’s less than five minutes to the beach and the best thing is they provided a cart for all our beach necessities perfect accessory to my vacation. I will definitely look this place up again for future Waikiki vacation.

Amazing! Me and my husband stayed here for 8 days, and everything was perfect. The location was superb, the apartment was really nice and clean, the view from the spacious balcony was really pretty. And parking was no problem, lots of options near by. Cathy had made everything very easy for us. All instructions were spot on. The beautiful walk to the city center took us about 20 minutes. Amazing view. Easy check in. Well appointed kitchen. A/C is noisy but works great. Furnishings really need updating, stained, water marks, out dated, linens were old. Otherwise it would be 5 stars.

The best thing about this property is the location. It’s a corner unit on the eleventh floor with beautiful views of the ocean. It has 2 bedrooms, 2 bathrooms and a sofa sleeper in the living room, and a full kitchen. It’s an older condo and can use some maintenance and updating.

July 2025

You get what you pay for when you travel. The price on this unit was on the lower end for accommodations in Waikiki. The room as advertised has a great view of the ocean and the lagoon. Beyond that perk, the rest of the location is average. Main Pro: close to everything and spectacular views from the balcony.Main Con: Air Conditioner leaks so much water that you have to dump condensation pans every four hours or their will be spillage running off of the balcony. Not the end of the worst thing ever, but it’s a pretty big inconvenience over the course of a warm and humid evening/night.

We were in Honolulu to support a crew racing in the TransPac 2025 from LA to Honolulu. The location could not have been better for accessing Hawaii Yacht Club and the marina. The apartment was also within walking distance of Waikiki dining and shopping. There was convenient pay parking behind the building for our rental car so we were able to drive to hiking and snorkeling outside of Waikiki.

July 2025

Overall enjoyed the stay. A few suggestions to make it better. Get better pillows, maybe a comforter. We stayed for 9 nights, we would have appreciated more than 2 rolls of toilet paper. We had to pay 3.00 per roll downstairs. Also, lots of pigeon poop on patio. Overall, condo was great. Easy to get in/out. Everything worked. Kitchen fully stocked. We would go back because the view was breathtaking. Probably pay more if the issues above were addressed.
