Where to stay in Maui

Two sunny coasts, eight places to wake up, and one that's right for you.

Maui's places to stay sit on two sunny coasts that feel like two different vacations. West Maui is greener and more dramatic, with sunsets behind Lanai and Molokai. South Maui is drier, closer to the airport, and closer to Haleakala and the Road to Hana. Below we explore the eight places almost every visitor stays, what a day feels like in each, and what's within easy reach.

West Maui or South Maui?

Both coasts are dry, sunny and lined with places to stay. The difference is in the feel, the drive and the evenings.

West Maui
Part 1 of 3

West Maui

Greener, more dramatic, and the best sunsets

West Maui is the Maui of postcards: a string of golden beaches below green mountains, with Lanai and Molokai floating on the horizon at sunset. From Kaanapali's resorts to Kapalua's quiet bays, it's about an hour from the airport, and well worth the drive.

Lahaina town is still rebuilding after the 2023 fire. Kaanapali, Honokowai, Kahana, Napili and Kapalua, just up the coast, were not damaged.

Kaanapali, Maui
West Maui

Kaanapali

The classic Maui resort beach, with everything a stroll away.

A day in Kaanapali

Morning coffee on the lanai, with the beach already glowing below. You swim before breakfast, then follow the beachfront path to Whalers Village for lunch. In the afternoon, snorkel at Black Rock and look for sea turtles. At sunset a cliff diver lights the torches on the rock and leaps into the sea, and dinner is a short walk away.

Honokowai and Kahana

Oceanfront condos at down-to-earth prices, with turtles below and sunsets ahead.

A day in Honokowai and Kahana

Your lanai hangs right over the water, and the turtles are often the first thing you see in the morning. Walk to the food trucks and the little farmers market in Honokowai, or drive five minutes to snorkel the reef at Kahekili Beach. In winter, humpbacks breach just offshore. Then fire up the grill by the pool and watch the sun set over Lanai and Molokai.

Kapalua and Napili, Maui
West Maui

Kapalua and Napili

Sheltered bays, snorkeling from the sand and a slower pace.

A day in Kapalua and Napili

You wake to birdsong and the rustle of palms. Join the line at the Gazebo for macadamia nut pancakes, then walk the coastal trail past lava headlands, with a snorkel at Kapalua Bay or a swim at Napili Bay. In summer, Honolua Bay's marine preserve is calm enough to explore. Spend the evening on the lanai, watching the sun sink beside the island of Molokai.

Black Rock

The lava point at the north end of Kaanapali's resort beach is one of Maui's easiest snorkels, with reef fish and turtles right off the sand. At sunset a cliff diver lights the torches and leaps from the top.

About 1.75 miles one way. Go early, or at sunset.

The wild north coast

The wild north coast

Drive the winding road around the top of the West Maui mountains to sea-cliff lookouts on the Ohai Trail and the Nakalele Blowhole.

The road narrows to one lane in places. Drive it slowly, in daylight, and admire the blowhole from a distance.

  • you want sunsets over the islands
  • you love snorkeling and watching turtles
  • you're happy to trade a longer airport drive for the classic Maui beach

Stay in Kaanapali for the resort beach, Honokowai and Kahana for oceanfront value, or Kapalua and Napili for quiet bays.

South Maui
Part 2 of 3

South Maui

Sunnier, easier, and closer to everything

South Maui is the sunny side: miles of beach parks in Kihei, polished resorts in Wailea, and the wild beaches of Makena beyond. It's 20 to 30 minutes from the airport, and Haleakala, Upcountry and the Road to Hana are all closer than from the west. Kihei alone has more places to stay than anywhere else in Hawaii, and its two halves feel quite different.

North Kihei

Miles of uninterrupted sand, whales offshore and easygoing value.

A day in North Kihei

Step off the lanai onto one of Maui's longest beaches, a ribbon of sand that runs about five miles to Maalaea. Walk it at sunrise, then watch for humpbacks in the bay, Maui's whale nursery in winter. The afternoon trade winds bring out the windsurfers, so swim in the morning. The farmers market and the Kealia Pond boardwalk are minutes away, and the sun sets across the bay.

South Kihei

Hana and Upcountry

Hana and Upcountry

Off the beaten path

For a slower, greener Maui, a few dozen cottages and homes sit away from the resort coasts: at the end of the Road to Hana, in the surf town of Paia, and on Haleakala's cool upcountry slopes. Most visitors add a night or two here rather than spending a whole trip.
