IDEAL GUESTS: returning Maui visitors that want to experience something different than the resort sides of Maui. Or first time guests that want to experience Maui like a local resident away from the hustle and bustle of the tourist areas. We recommend first time guests split their time between 2 sides of the island to have the full island experience. Many guests stay with us to explore the North shore, Hana and Haleakala as we are in the ideal location to these beautiful wonders of maui.

Important: AMENITIES and HOUSE RULES to note:

This is a legal vacation rental, Maui County B&B permit Approved.
Our B&B permit allows 4 guests total to occupy our cottage, no exceptions.

We like to let guests know that we are located on the non-touristy side of the island. All sides of maui are quite different and each season is different on each side of the island as well. Our north shore is great for adventurous guests looking for a quiet getaway in a local residence, while exploring the surrounding towns and north shore of maui. Our surrounding small towns are great for shopping and getting lunch or early dinner as shops close by 5pm and restaurants by 8:30-9pm. Unfortunately we don't have much night life to offer on our side of the island since mostly locals reside here. Our beaches on the north shore are known for surf waves and windsurfing- great for experienced surfers/windsurfers, people watching or sunbathing however many are not usually calm for swimming or snorkeling October thru May. For beginner surfers and all snorkelers we recommend a day trip to the west or south shores where you can rent surf boards/ snorkeling gear, get a lesson and the beaches have sandy bottoms where it is ideal for these activities.

The North shore is located on the edge of the rainforest which makes our area beautifully green and lush this is because we get enough natural rain year round to keep everything green without watering systems. We do have seasons on island and during winter months you can expect more rain on the north shore. We also get natural tradewinds year round that usually keeps our north shore 5-10 degrees cooler than the tourist sides of the island and cools down our evening temps, which is a blessing. Our warmest months are usually June through October, where we can get the warmer temps, high of 80-90 degrees F and evenings 70-75 degrees F. In the winter months we usually do not get colder temps than 65 degrees F rarely, therefore our north shore homes were not built with air conditioning or heating systems, just ceiling fans and windows to self regulate our homes inside temperature.

It is good to remember though that Maui is a tropical island, so our temperatures are humid and an average high of 75-85 degrees F. When you first arrive on island our temperatures can feel warmer than what you are used to at home until you get acclimated to the weather. So we like to mention if you live in air conditioning at your house and like your home on the cooler side then our place may not be a good fit for you.

Your stay is important to us and we want to make sure your vacation expectations are met while on island. If you are looking to experience what it is like to live in traditional home in a local Maui neighborhood and explore the island, we are in a great location to do that. However if being close to calm beaches, night life and where more action is, we actually recommend guests stay in Kaanapali or Kihei on the south and west shores of maui. These areas are in the best locations on island for weather and the Maui experience you have seen in magazines and movies. In these areas you are close to everything and you can just do a day trip to the north shore to check it out. We give you this information as we want you to have the best visit to the islands!
SECURITY CAMERAS: We have security Ring cameras on the property to monitor each front door, the driveway entrance and back gate to our property. We use these to monitor our property when it is vacant, verify contactless checkin/checkout and during late night hours if needed 11pm-5am. We respect our guests and have camera notifications turned off during your stay except during late night hours or in an emergency. The 4 cameras on property are located in visible places that are outside in the front yards facing directions that would not compromise privacy during your stay. See our house handbook during your stay for more information.
CANCELLATION POLICY: Travel is a choice. Our cancellation policy remains valid and moderate. If you should have to cancel, we refer you look at our cancelation policy for your reservation. WE HIGHLY RECOMMEND ALL GUESTS PURCHASE A THIRD-PARTY TRAVEL INSURANCE, one that lets you cancel for any reason for your vacation! It will cover your vacation for all other reasons not listed above that may cause you to cancel your stay.

LEGAL, PERMITTED MAUI VACATION RENTAL: B&B permit #BBPH 2016/0004, TA-132-129-3824-01, GE-132-129-3824-01, TMK: 270090290000 Registration Number: 270090290000,BBPH 2016/0004,TA-132-129-3824-01,GE-132-129-3824-01

The Haiku Surf Cottage is exactly what we hoped it would be when we booked. The cottage is cute and comfortable, with everything you need for your stay. We really appreciated the beach chairs! The location is an easy drive to anywhere you’d like to visit, but quiet and just off the beaten path enough to make you feel like a local. We loved the outdoor shower and walking to the Baked on Maui. The owners communicated the perfected amount, making sure we we comfortable without being intrusive. If you are looking for something a little different from a condo or resort, this is the spot.

Amy and Joel really thought of everything one might need for a great getaway! The cottage was clean, beautifully decorated and was in a peaceful surrounding. The only sound was the rain from tropical storm Calvin and the occasional rooster crowing in the distance. Great location walking distance to a quaint little grocery store and also a breakfast and lunch spot with all kinds of tasty food. Would recommend to anyone who would prefer to be off the beaten path and away from tourists traps!

We’ve had such a great time in this house. Communication was great, check-in and out easy and the house was stocked with everything! We loved the fact that it was away from the crowd, great access to the road to Hana and other spots! The house was clean, well kept and we loved sitting outside during the evening rain! Definitely the place to be in Maui!

The owners were so thoughtful in all of the amenities and advice they provided. They were very quick to respond when we had questions about activities on the island. It was great to have separate bedrooms along with a living room. The location is ideal for a visit to the Road to Hana.

We loved our stay here! Great location to do what we wanted on that side of the Island, like visit Paia, Hookipa, Baby Beach, Makawao, and was a wonderful place start to the road to Hana. Cute decor, nice quiet neighborhood, and was a treat each morning to take the trail from the cottage to get coffee at Baked on Maui. Great memories made here, we had a lovely stay!

We loved our Haiku surf cottage stay! We aren’t ones for big fancy resorts and this place was cozy and clean and had great details. We LOVED the outdoor shower and fought over who got to take the first one. The property is beautifully kept and has fresh fruit and flowers! The hosts were responsive and helpful in all ways! We highly recommend this as a wonderful place to stay!

My husband and I travelled to 2 islands over the course of 3 weeks. Our daughter joined us for the last week. We stayed in Lahaina for 1 week, hana 1 night and in this cottage. The cottage was nice and comfortable. We were gone during the day and had most meals out. Soap and shampoo were provided along with towels. We would have liked snorkel gear, boogie board or beach umbrella. A grill would be welcome as well. While this was a nice house we discovered it was over an hour to our favorite beaches on the island. We found a beach to watch the turtles and ate at a couple restaurants in Piai that were wonderful.

Such a lovely place to stay! It was amazing to be in a quieter neighborhood with only the sounds of nature. The cottage came equipped with everything we needed to enjoy the surrounding areas. Highly recommend, especially if you’re doing the road to Hana

Lovely little cottage, full of attentive details, complete and clean, good beds, nice lanai, with a backyard door to Baked on Maui for great coffee and the best cake on the Island. All the surfboards as a gate gave a holiday feeling. The grapefruit tree gave fruit. In the morning sunshine on the back lanai. Lovely evenings on the front porch. We had beautiful weather, but the house was cool by opening windows and using fans. Big piles of towels. Beach chairs. Complete kitchen with a big fridge and good oven. Bathroom Complete with soap and lotions. Haiku Pauwela is a great location for the northern beaches, Paia, road to Hana and going upcountry and to Haleakala. We loved our stay, too short helas. Hope to be back! Thank you, Amy, for having us.

This cute surf cottage has everything you need and more! Hosts were super communicative and easy to reach, with check in a breeze. It was perfect for the 3 of us and could be fine for 4 as well. They cottage had lots of items to cook with beyond basic cook wear, some basic spices and small items that make cooking easy. They have lots of touches that make this an above many other properties we have stayed including there recommendation book, library, snack basket, beach chairs and boogie boards! The fruit trees were amazing, and having a store, coffee shop and hardware store just out back gate was super convenient.

Nice, comfortable accommodations in a quiet neighborhood. Very clean and well-kept. It has a fun relaxing Hawaii vibe making it an inviting retreat after a day of sightseeing or the beach. Prior to our arrival a major rainstorm caused some widespread power outages throughout Hawaii, which also disabled WiFi/TV service. The onsite manager tried to restore the service and provided a lantern along with the battery candles in case of another power outage. The next morning the owner also called to check on us.

What an amazing property and awesome hosts! We all absolutely loved our stay here - such cool decor and every amenity was a step above. This was the perfect location for activities we had planned (road to Hana, Haleakala, helicopter that was near the airport) and it was so nice to come back to a peaceful quiet place to relax afterwards. Wonderful kind hosts who provided tons of helpful recommendations!

EVERYTHING and I mean EVERYTHING about our Haiku stay was fabulous! The residence is adorable and immaculate! Beds were comfortable. Water pressure was excellent. The home was well stocked per all our needs. And communication with the owner was above and beyond expectations. Thank you so much! Haiku, about 35 minutes north of Kihei, is a gem! It is an adorable, pastoral and tranquil town that was the perfect respite from the busier South Shore. It is a perfect place to enjoy the magnificent "road to Hana". If/when we return to Maui, I think Haiku is exactly where we would prefer to stay. It is definitely wetter but oh, so ideal. And, fear not, there are places to eat and to purchase needed supplies. You absolutely have to visit Baked on Maui, a treasure not to be missed.

This is a very well kept cottage in a quiet but vibrant neighborhood. Home was exceptionally clean when we arrived and owners were very quick to respond to questions. 5 minute walk through the back gate to Baked on Maui was a daily ritual for us - great coffee, baked goods and egg dishes. A short drive to local beaches for turtle and surfer watching and a great starting point for the road to Hana. The cottage does share property with another home owned by the same people however, we never felt like we were in each other’s space as the yard is.a good size and the cottage has its own outdoor porch and deck areas well away from the other home. Would definitely stay here again.
