Hookipa Beach Park, Maui

Ho'okipa Beach Park is world-famous for its consistent trade winds and powerful waves, making it a premier destination for windsurfing, surfing, and kiteboarding. It regularly hosts top-level competitions and draws water sports enthusiasts from around the globe.

But it’s not just about the waves. In the late afternoons, Hawaiian green sea turtles (honu) can often be seen basking on the sand—a unique and serene sight. While turtle nesting on Maui is relatively rare compared to the Northwestern Hawaiian Islands, the nesting season typically runs from April through September, with occasional activity extending into December. Visitors are reminded to keep a respectful distance of at least 10 feet from all turtles, and to avoid flash photography at night.

The scenic overlook at Ho’okipa is one of Maui’s most beloved. With sweeping views of the surf, the crescent beach, and the West Maui Mountains beyond, it’s a favorite for photographers and sunset seekers alike.

Though many travelers include Ho'okipa as a quick stop on their Road to Hana journey, this is often a misstep. With so many must-see stops on the Hana Highway, time here is better spent as part of a separate North Shore day trip. Thanks to its close proximity to Paʻia town, Ho'okipa pairs perfectly with a visit to Paʻia’s eclectic shops and eateries, followed by a visit to Twin Falls.
