Very clean, cozy cottage in a quiet neighborhood, close to nice shops and eateries. Well appointed and thoughtfully laid out. Great place to decompress after being inundated with tourists everywhere all day. More authentic Hawaiian experience being surrounded by 2 acres of lush gardens and fruit trees. We much prefer to be woken by the roosters crow and listen to the sounds of the rain and birds, etc. on the property, instead of resort accommodations.

Place is very well taken care of, and it’s completely secluded! We loved it and couldn’t think of a better place to spend our honeymoon.

The house nestled amongst tropical plants in a grassy yard, and that is surrounded by trees. It gives the feeling of seclusion and, for someone who was visiting for the first time, a veiw of the flora and fauna from the comforts of a deck or window. We were too caught up in enjoying the ambience to even jump in the hottub.
Each night we would shutoff the lights and listen to the quiet chirping of the geckos. As we drifted off to sleep.
Each morning the master bed was bathed in the golden light of the rising sun. Gentle rain would patter through the leaves and on the roof for a few minutes.
It is a very relaxing environment, from walking the property with a cup of coffee and personable chickens, to listening to the evening breeze through the trees. It was a very refreshing stay and we are very grateful for the hospitality.

The house, location and property are perfect way to celebrate my 60th birthday! The house is beautiful and very private, walk to the yard and get some fruit off the tree. My wife made friends with the chickens that are everywhere on Kauai. Talked with the neighbor Rob almost every day. Thinking about going back soon!

The home and property are beautiful. The cottage has windows all around bringing in the wind, sound of rain, bird song and all the rooster friends. Sitting on the lanai and soaking in the hot tub was lovely. We look forward to returning!

There is a lot of greenery surrounding this little cottage. And a lot of chickens and roosters. They start crowing around 3 AM and continue through the day. Despite that, we slept through most of their singing. The cottage has a deck with a table where you can eat or relax too. It rained a lot when we were there off season. But it was still possible to get out and find things to do around that area when there were breaks in the weather. We enjoyed our stay.

My wife and I had a fantastic time and loved our stay at Hale Kokio. The property is absolutely beautiful, quiet and private. We were quite busy everyday but enjoyed our time to relax there in the morning for coffee and breakfast and dinners we cooked at night. All that said there are a few things we feel could be refreshed as far as amenities in the house itself. All the bath towels are a bit old, could use some new ones. We cook a lot and feel some of the kitchen items could be updated to make closer to "well appointed". The light sting out on the covered deck have a section that doesn't work, etc. We feel these are easy things to update and would elevate this gorgeous property even more. Eleanor was a pleasure to deal with, prompt to respond to questions and very courteous. Overall we enjoyed our stay. Definitely a memorable vacation.

Hale Kokio was the perfect place to stay for our honeymoon! Clean, cute, and a great distance from beaches, hikes, and restaurants. It was so nice to have a private getaway after exploring the island everyday.

We thoroughly enjoyed our stay in this well-maintained cottage situated on an acre and a half of a tropical garden. The interior was very comfortable and clean. The owner lived nearby, and was always willing to help make her stay more comfortable. We will certainly consider this cottage again for a future visit.

Private and peaceful. The cottage could use a little freshening up/updating. However, we had a nice time.

My wife and I stayed here 11 days for our honeymoon and had an AMAZING experience! We felt like we were in the Garden of Eden as we walked around the property initially––there were so many different kinds of fruit growing! It's the perfect size for two, and WAY better than a hotel or resort. We saved a lot of money by mostly cooking our own food and eating it out on the lovely lanai.
Here are some things to consider if you're thinking about staying here:
It's in a great location too, just 20 minutes from Hanalei (the tourist hub of the north shore). The nearest town is Kilauea, which is way less touristy, which we enjoyed.
The chickens are loud and will wake all but the heaviest sleepers up in the morning, but we didn't mind so much since it made the jet lag going back home not as bad.
The loft has a couple air mattresses, so theoretically more than 2 could stay here, but it might be a tight squeeze. It is a true bungalow––kitchen, bed, and couch are all in the same room.
The TV is very small and can only be viewed from the couch. It's only a minor inconvenience, but if you like to watch TV on your vacations, then this probably isn't the place for you (nor is Kauai in general, for that matter 😂).
The exterior color on the house is not as vibrant as the pictures make it seem, but the view of the lush vegetation and sunset colors make any house's colors pale in comparison.
All in all, GREAT experience and would absolutely use this spot again.

The privacy and seclusion of the property gave a a feel of our own Vacasa! The cozy cottage was more than sufficient for our two week stay and we enjoyed every moment of our time there. Best vacay in my 51 years….👊👍❤️

Clean, comfortable, and serene, Hale Kokio is better than the photos suggest. It is setup for a couple to enjoy. If you like cooking you'll appreciate the well-equipped kitchen and quality gas grill. Good location for exploring the north shore.

Perfect for couples who don't want the crowds of the typical resort or busy travel areas. Out of the way but not far from things needed. Incredibly nice owners who make sure you don't need anything and are available any time. Property is absolutely gorgeous. You won't be disappointed.

This was the most beautiful place I have ever been. It is nestled in a quiet neighborhood with the most peaceful gardens of greenery, fruit trees, and beautiful plants and flowers. The space inside was perfect for the two of us. My husband and I felt like we were sleeping in the clouds on the bed it was so comfortable, we slept so peacefully. Our hosts did a wonderful job with this guest cottage. I didn’t want to go home. Thank you for allowing us to enjoy your beautiful home.❤️❤️❤️

Very private, clean and fairly well equipped overall. Had a wonderful stay and recommend for anyone who doesn’t like hotels or condos. Conveniently located between Kapaa and Princeville, our favorite area on Kauai. 15 minutes to Hanalei. The covered porch was especially nice during downpours.

We absolutely loved Hale Kokio! The cottage is very special and the grounds are amazing. We primarily cooked our meals during our week stay. The kitchen had everything we needed. The lanai overlooking the beautiful property was our preferred spot for breakfast and dinner (we were usually off enjoying the area at lunch time). We slept great on the comfortable bed and didn't have any need for the air conditioner. We just opened the windows and let the cool breezes blow through. The location was great with an easy drive to many great beaches. Our personal favorite was Secret Beach. Hale Kokio is a very unique and special place to stay on Kauai!

January 2023
An exceptionally charming and very private cottage. It was memorable and a complete magical oasis for us during our stay. The location of nearby Kīlauea is perfect. It is one of our favorite spots on Kauai. We loved all the local neighborhood farm stands that were stocked with fresh fruits, herbs, and flowers. Room for improvement: could use a little more attention to detail when it comes to cleaning. The hot tub takes a really long time to heat up so you need to set to the temp you want earlier in the day if you want to use it at night. Minimally stocked (no salt/pepper, seasonings, olive oil, etc) so bring what you need to cook your meals. Very reasonable price wise for a rental on the north shore. Overall, very fulfilling and beyond beautiful! Thank you

Staying here was like a dream! Everything was well thought out and comfortable. We enjoyed everything so much on the property and we felt like we had privacy. The cottage was beautiful on the inside and we loved all the thought put into the detail. The spa was very clean and soothing after a long day out on the island. It felt like we had privacy and the hosts were very professional and easy to work with. Definitely would recommend!

My husband and I really enjoyed our stay at the property. We loved the location, communication with the property manager was easy and the garden surrounding the cottage was lovely. The Hale Kokio is a beautiful place in a beautiful setting. It the perfect location to navigate the whole island. Get ready for early wake up calls from the local inhabitants of the farm....

This was our honeymoon and I can’t say enough wonderful things about this place. Quaint and lovely. Outdoor shower and hot tub. Picked fresh avocados from the tree in the yard

August 2022
Lovely cottage with total privacy. We walked the neighborhood and bought fruit from the little stands in their front yarded enjoyed the Avocados from the trees on the property. We made most of our meals at the cottage and thoroughly enjoyed the lovely outside dining. This is by far the best part of the island...slower pace and not as much traffic as the east side.. Don't miss the local farmer's market,

One of our new favorite places to stay! We had such a great trip and loved coming back to the cottage at the end of the day to soak in the hot tub and get a good nights sleep. Really peaceful setting with lots of trees and greenery for privacy and amenities to make for a really comfortable stay. Would love to come back and stay again someday!

We truly could not have asked for a more perfect place to stay during our honeymoon (and first time on the island!). An magical feeling tropical secret garden, hale kokio checked all the boxes and more. Panoramic windows in the cozy cottage, porch table overlooking the beautiful private garden and the outdoor shower were just a few of our favorites. Bliss!!!

What an amazing location. On its own property with all the privacy you could desire. Surrounded by large properties this little gem gives you your own oasis. Easy driving to local beaches were you can just sit or grab the snorkel gear and follow the sea creatures around. Market is close by so you can stock up on food to cook or make your way to local restaurants. I highly recommend the property.

The lovely cottage is the perfect place for a relaxing vacation. Very private and quiet, well-stocked, and close to the beautiful beaches of the North Coast. We enjoyed soaking in the hot tub after a long day of hiking and exploring. Hosts were welcoming and very responsive.

March 2022
We were on Kauai for 5 weeks, staying in 4 different vacation rentals, and this was our favorite; we were there our last 9 days. Though small - it is really a studio - it was comfortable, and had everything we needed. We mostly lived on the lanai, enjoying the breezes, the birds, and all the greenery, as well as the neighborhood chickens. The location is excellent - it is on a dead-end street, very quiet, set on over an acre of beautiful land, with lots of fruit trees. The owners live next door, and Alan was very kind and helpful, never intrusive. It is 5 minutes away from a must-visit destination, the Na 'Aina Kai botanical and sculpture garden, probably our favorite activity of our trip. We also loved Kilaeau Point Wildlife refuge at the lighthouse, and Anini Beach.

December 2021
We had such a wonderful time staying at Hale Kokio during our elopement/honeymoon. The property was beautiful, quiet, private, clean, and had everything we needed. The hot tub was just perfect, and we were close to everything we needed, including the private waterfall location we were married at. The owner was excellent communicating with us before we even arrived so we could add an additional day and continued to be available throughout our stay. If you stay, I highly recommend the Kilauea Market and Cafe, which on top of being the best market I’ve found on the island, went above and beyond to work with friends of ours to coordinate a gift basket to be delivered while we were at our wedding ceremony. This gift basket also involved the owner and property manager and so much effort by everyone and just showed how helpful and wonderful everyone was. So amazing! It rained most of our visit (like, more than your standard Kauai rain…. I have a local friend who said it was the most he’d seen since he flew home during a hurricane!), but we had no complaints hanging out at the house, in the hot tub, cooking on the grill, and just relaxing. A fantastic location to stay if you’re coming to Kauai…. Also a short drive to some excellent beaches and close enough to restaurants and shopping, but we really capitalized on the beauty and privacy of the property!

November 2021
We very much enjoyed our stay at Hale Kokio! The property was just right for our romantic getaway with amenities for eating in and close enough to Kilauea and Hanalei to access lunch and dinner options. We were able to enjoy some snorkeling at Anini beach, despite visiting in winter on the North Shore.
Eleanor and Rob were great hosts leading up to the trip and once we arrived. They even arranged for a coffee grinder to be available to feed our special interest in sampling the locally roasted offerings (definitely recommend Java Kai in Kilauea for beans). The property was clean and was even better in person than it shows in the photos. All in all, great experience and we would love to visit again for our next trip to Kauai!

November 2021
Hale Kokio was one of two properties we stayed at during our trip to Kauai. It was amazing! We woke up to the sunrise and roosters each morning and enjoyed coffee on the porch, admiring the landscaping of the property. The hot tub was a treat after long days outside. The cottage was clean and perfect for us. I'd recommend it to anyone looking for a quiet stay in Kauai!

February 2017
We loved our 7-night stay. Upon our arrival we discovered a gift of fresh fruit and tropical flowers. The house is very clean and had everything we needed. The deck is lovely and comfortable, with a great view of the garden. Our host, Rob, gave me a tour of the grounds and showed me all of his tropical fruit trees. I have a background in floristry and plant science and enjoyed the beautiful gardens very much. There are many beautiful birds in the yard as well. The only improvement would be a more comfortable bed, or at least a memory foam topper. I woke up very achy every day due to the uncomfortable mattress. I know that the host, Rob, is very interested in making the house comfortable and in making improvements. A new hot tub was delivered while we were there. I would love to stay here again sometime.

December 2016
We are nature lovers and not very attracted by all inclusive resorts with all the noise and traffic that come with them. We have found our little paradise at Eleonor and Rob's house. It was as the photos and the written description and even more. There was a lot of fruit trees on the property and we were allowed to pick some: grapefruits, avocados so good when we arrived from one of our treks. The house is strategically well situated: not far from groceries if you decide to cook some of your meals, and restaurants. Not far from some good swimming beaches as well as the Kolalau Trail and tunnels. We felt very secured and the spa was appreciated. Rob and Lisa were friendly and ready to help us in any way. We recommend the property without any hesitation.

October 2016
Overall the cottage was very nice, clean and fit the description of the owners and previous guests. There are several problems: The hot water in the bathroom sink was inconsistent ranging from hot to cold without touching any other faucet. For this reason we did not use the shower that may or may not have worked if the water source was the same as the sink (solution: ocean swim each day). The hot tub, which is small but nice, continually had a problem with the heating/pump functions and a failure (FL) would occur frequently. This is an old tub. We could not figure out how to work the TV, which was actually a good thing. The frequently used deck sliding screen door is extremely old, continuously stuck and will soon break by someone's proper use. It's time for replacement as that was a significant source of frustration and anxiety. In all the cottage is very nice but the owners need to spend some time living in the cottage to see what the problems are. Lastly the coffee pot heating base hadn't been cleaned in a verrrry long time; disgusting, but I cleaned it before using. All in all it's a nice place for 2 and if Kilauea, seclusion and plenty of nice beaches is what you want, this cottage is very acceptable and recommended. I wish I was back there now!! (5 stars when the screen door is replaced)

October 2016
As we drove up to the property I was filled with so much excitement I felt like a little kid getting presents on her birthday, clapping my hands and saying "yay"! I was amazed by how beautiful the property was and the perfect cottage that was hidden in a tropical forest that included flowers, fruit trees and plants that surrounds the cottage giving you privacy. The cottage is perfect for two people and it had all that we needed to make it our temporary home for 8 nights. Having a hot tub was a bonus and it was great to be able to use the beach chairs that was available for use. It was so helpful to have a washer and dryer at the cottage as well. It was perfect and we loved it.

October 2016
This cottage is the perfect size for one person or a couple. The grounds are lush and spacious. Location is perfect north shore spot within 15-20 minutes of both Hanalei and Kapaa. Cottage is well maintained and stocked with basic kitchen necessities. Owners provided excellent communication. Great alternative to condos or hotels.

We had a great experience staying at Eleanor and Rob's place. We live rurally on Vancouver Island, Canada so this was a great retreat for us. It was very much like our home in Canada: quiet, peaceful and beautifully landscaped, but Kauai style!
Rob was very friendly and helpful on arrival and all around we would stay here again. The property was clean and well maintained and as described in the listing - there were no unpleasant surprises. Also, the beaches in North Kauai are amazing. Less people than in the south and when we were there (August 2016) the weather on the northern beaches was fantastic.
Thanks,
Heidi and Randy

This was the perfect place for a couple that's not interested in resorts with a suburban vibe. It had everything we needed- washer/dryer, kitchen with dishes, lounge chairs, and a hot tub. The lanai was a great place for a quiet meal. The beach chairs and snorkel equipment were great extras. It's tucked out of the way, and the only noise was the chickens, which are ubiquitous on the island.

Oh. My. Gosh. I cannot say enough wonderful things about this place. This property is GORGEOUS. It is not beachfront which made us second guess our choice a few times (prior to arrival) but once we arrived and saw how amazing the property and bungalow were, we were hooked. We only reserved Hale Kokio for half of our visit but would have easily given up our beach front condo for the beauty and privacy of the bungalow. The bungalow was plenty big for 2 people and the amenities are amazing! We loved having a full kitchen and were able to purchase ahi from a local farmer and create delicious meals using local products. We also LOVED the mature fruit trees on the property... what a bonus!! It was so much fun to just walk around the yard and check out the flora. The hot tub was definitely a bonus as well. We spent every evening on the back deck, relaxing in the hot tub or on the chairs. It was such a magical place. We would move there in a heartbeat.. Book this rental. You will NOT regret it.

This was our second trip to Kauai and I am so glad we chose Hale Kokio. We were looking for a place to relax and live like a local and this fit the bill perfectly. The grounds were beautiful from the flowers to the chickens to the bunny. We enjoyed sitting on the deck and getting the opportunity to relax for once! This location is central to the North Shore, however not too far from the South Shore so we visited one end of the island to the other and this was a great place to stay. The house was the perfect size for us and we loved it so much we are looking to return soon!

This property is amazing! My husband and I have stayed at many properties in the past and this one is a jewel. We loved coming home every evening to relax in the hot tub, after long days of hiking, snorkeling and exploring the beautiful beaches and tropical forests on the island. The shower is possibly the best I have ever experienced. The kitchen and bathroom are stocked well with towels, dishes, toiletries, cleaning products, etc. The grounds are kept clean and manicured. (We miss Peaches!) Rob and Lisa are friendly and helpful (Thanks again for the fresh coconut.)The house is small but perfect for two in love! It's location near the Kilauea Lighthouse is convenient for exploring the whole island. I would sell everything I own and move here in an instant to live forever in paradise.....

Not sure how we chose Hale Kokio for our 20th wedding anniversary stay, but it was a perfect match for us. The place looked and felt like the pictures depicted. It had a very serene setting with an immaculate home, and well groomed grounds. We felt like we were the only ones there, with the exception of a couple of roosters. The hot tub was a welcomed feature especially after hikes and to relax. We appreciated all the modern appliances that we used for cooking and grilling fresh fish. We loved where the location of cottage is in the Kilauea area which sits conveniently between Hanalei and Kapa'a. We frequented the convenient bakery, deli, and restaurants in Kilauea. We also enjoyed the brief encounters with neighbor/caregivers of the property at the local farmer's market and restaurant. It was nice to know they were nearby if we needed anything but otherwise did not see or hear them during our stay. I definitely would visit again and recommend to friends and family. Mahalo for the hospitality!

'Magical' absolutely describes Hale Kokio. Tucked away in a lush private setting, this sweet cottage was the perfect slice of island life. Our time in the cottage was sandwiched between stays at large hotels on the island so the cottage was a huge contrast. And before arriving at the cottage, I guessed that we would take those few days and be out and about exploring. I have to tell you that we loved the life at the cottage so much we hardly left. We would go to Kilauea Bakery for breakfast, hike down to Secret Beach for a couple of hours, stop at the market for food and go back to the cottage for the rest of the day. We loved reading and dozing on the porch, soaking in the hot tub, barbecuing supper or an early dinner at the great choice of local restaurants and then back into the hot tub! Hale Kokio with all its amenities is everything one would wish for in an island retreat.

May 2011
My (now) husband stayed at Hale Kokio for two glorious weeks. It was amazing! It had everything we needed to cook (without a dishwasher, but we made due without) including a gas stove/oven and a gas grill for outdoor grilling. The bed was very comfy, and the bedding was nice and light for the weather. Great air circulation with the open windows and the fans.
Let me take a moment to talk about the absolutely GORGEOUS grounds at Hale Kokio. You are on two private acres, only to be shared with the chickens that inhabit the place. They will wake you up promptly at 5:45 am. There are coconuts, passion fruits, bananas, and every kind of native flower you could ask for. Plumeria, hibiscus, bird of paradise, orchid (I loved how they just cling on to the other trees!). If you stay, make a morning of searching the grounds.. there are many surprises. Bring your camera!
It is easy to find, and conveniently located. The north coast is very laid back, "old Hawaii", which is what we were looking for. Just 20 minutes from everything you need in Kapa'a, and 10 minutes from great shops and beaches in Princeville. You will enjoy your stay.

We stayed here for four nights and found the place to be even better than the pictures. It was nice to see fresh cut flowers waiting when we arrived and fruit from the grounds. Thanks for taking such good care of your place without even seeing us. It was like magic. We zoom in and everything was prepared for us.

February 2011
We stayed 11 nights recently and could not have loved this place more. This was our 4th visit to Kauai and this cottage was ideally located and had all the amenities and more than you could ask for. Anyone wanting peace and quiet, natural beauty and all the fruit you can pick should choose this rental.

December 2010
We had a wonderful time! What a beautiful place! We very much enjoyed
the immaculately clean and tastefully furnished cottage, the beautiful grounds and perfect privacy. We did a lot of snorkeling, hiking and "staying at home". It could not have been any better. For those interested in birds, we also enjoyed seeing some fellow Alaskans vacationing in the garden: golden plovers that had made their way here on their own wings. There was also a pair of white-rumped shamas, not native to the Hawaiian islands but lovely birds to watch. We would love to come back.

May 2010
This was the perfect place to celebrate our 10th wedding anniversary. We were looking for something other than a hotel/suite experience and this exceeded our expectations. I would recommend Hale Kokio to anyone who is looking for a retreat away from the busy business world. The description accurately reflects the property. If you are looking for North Island adventure, this is the place to unwind after your busy day. The hottub and a glass of wine on the veranda is calling us back in the future.
March 2010
Hale Kokio was everything we hoped it would be and more. The house is comfortable, clean and well equipped. The grounds are beautiful, fruit trees, flowers and seclusion. We would definitely rent it again if available on our next trip.
