SUPER CHARMING - Hawaiian Vintage styled Cottage..Close to beaches and natural pool. Fully upgraded with lots of amenities. All new comfy furniture to kick back and watch a movie.

Free high speed wireless Internet,

Hana is commonly known as the “Last Hawaiian Place.” Step back into the charm and casual elegance of old Hawai’i in an authentic, meticulously renovated plantation owners home in Hana.

Once used to house managers from the sugar cane plantation days, this home, named Hale Ulu Lulu, underwent a major rebuilding (completed in early 2020 and constantly maintained) and is now completely restored with attention to historic detail, while providing every modern convenience. We There is an open and airy layout with ocean and pastoral views , elegantly detailed, vintage style bath with dual-sided claw foot tub (great for romantic baths for two), granite kitchen counters with reclaimed Koa wood bar/counter and trim accents. A sliding panel of framed Tapa cloth between the bedroom and living area allows you to relax in bed to the incredible view or, when closed, to have complete privacy from the rest of the house.

The furnishings are comfortable and upgraded with a plush leather couch and chair. We have designed the cottage with warm tropical colors, original local artwork, Hawaiian antiques and Polynesian exotica. Though the house has a tasteful and elegant décor, you can still put your feet on the furniture and enjoy the relaxed atmosphere. You will arrive to rooms filled with brilliant tropical flowers and orchids, 100% cotton, high thread count, quality linens and towels and quality soaps as well as coffee and green tea and fresh fruit to start off your first day with us – fine details on par with the finest luxury hotel at a fraction of comparable prices (really).

Hale Ulu Lulu is part of a sprawling two-acre property surrounded by gracious lawns and verdant tropical gardens and foliage.

We are located just three miles south of Hana Town in the Maka’alae district, which is considered the most highly desired area of Hana. You are sure to fall in love with the picturesque and pastoral landscape, the ever-changing ocean colors and the gentle sound of the waves lulling you to sleep at night. Walk 20 minutes to the world famous Hamoa Beach (or a 4 minute drive) or 20 minutes in the other direction to the Venus pool- two of Hana’s most desired attractions – practically in our back yard!

Mahalo!

Charming cottage, clean, well maintained, all necessary kitchen utensils. Very comfortable for a couple. Most importantly, the sunrises when you drink your first cup of coffee, stirring on the front porch, is breathtaking! Hana is one of the kind.

Excellent place to stay near Hana. Within minutes of Homoa, Koki, and Red sand beaches. Would stay here again for sure.

The owners over delivered in every way. As advised we bought most groceries in the arrival city. Plenty of salad dressing and mustard were left by previous visitors unopened. Might get sugar or honey if you desire. Just bring your bathing suits and sunglasses.

Everything I needed was there. Best location. Just what I needed. I grew up in a rural area in the States and was accustomed to using fans instead of AC and not afraid of the drive to get there. If you are not used to these things, don't pass this up. Drive slow (pull over for locals), take in the scenery, stop and talk to the people at the different stands and shops, and consider this house the bougiest glamping option you'll find. It's a short drive to Hana town and right in between Venus pool and Huli Huli chicken. Be sure to read the guide in the table. It tells you everything you can expect.

Absolutely amazing find on the Hannah side. My wife and I really enjoyed place. It has been renovated really well and has all of them and it is that you might need. It was truly a great escape.

We come to Hana about once a year. It is so relaxed and peaceful. This cottage was a perfect place to stay for the most part. Very pleasant, clean, and welcoming. Makes you feel like you are really in Hana rather than just at a resort. Only negative was the noise from lawn mowing and other landscaping work. It can be pretty loud during most of the day and we just seemed to hit a lot of it. Would stay here again, however.

Whether you want to go to Kipahulu National Park, take a hike with ocean views or just enjoy Hamoa beach, this old style plantation hale puts you in the heart of all that is best about Hana. We live in Makawao and Hana is our favorite place for a stay-cation!

We were welcomed to our peaceful oasis with fresh flowers and thoughtful decor, that immediately invited us to relax. The cottage is clean and spacious, and provides a beautiful place to unwind, while listening to the birds, moments of tropical rain, and feeling the gentle breeze fresh with ocean air. Easy drive to Hana Town and our favorite Hamoa Beach.

My sister and I drove the road to Hana and spent the night in this home. The host was great. The house was great. The home was so welcoming when we arrived. The detailed directions where spot on. The home had everything we needed and more such as bug spray and sunscreen. We loved the vintage hawaiian decor and the flowers and leaves theoughout. Perfect place for our overnight trip!

I stayed at the house with my daughter for her graduation trip to Maui. The pictures of the house were gorgeous, and I loved the feel of stepping back in time. Upon arrival I found the pictures didn’t do it justice- it was even more beautiful in person. The land around the house is gorgeous. We had done several days in Kihei and Lahaina. Hana is a complete 180. Away from the craziness and hustle. It’s in a lush tropical forest surrounded by nature. I loved it! The house has all the amenities you could want, and it’s decorated so beautifully with local artwork. It’s close to waterfalls, black sand beaches, red sand beaches, and hiking. If you want something more “upscale” than local food trucks or the delicious Huli Huli chicken, Hana Resort is close by and has a nice restaurant and general store. It’s a perfect spot.

Lovely and charming residence in a great location. So much better than practically any hotel room you can find on Maui. You feel like you are back in old Hawaii. Very short distance to beaches and other attractions.. The house is very tastefully furnished with comfortable couches and complimentary streaming on all the services. You can hear the ocean from the house and the sound lulls you off to sleep in the evenings. I want to come back and stay at this property again for a longer visit to the area. Hana is magical!

The cottage was absolutely charming, clean, comfortable and wonderful location. Our stay at this property made our trip to Hana extra special. Loved our 20 minute walks to Hamoa Beach! Only a 10 minute walk to Tony’s for a great Mahi sandwich. The cottage had a beautiful sunrise and ocean view. Great find!!

The cottage is gorgeous, set back on the Hana hwy making it the perfect location for exploring Hana. The furnishing are beautifully thought out without being over the top giving it an old Hawaii zen feel. It was extremely relaxing and private. Not to mention a very well stocked kitchen and a closet full of everything you would need to relax and play at the beach. Loved staying here making it hard to leave. 🌺🙏

Beautifully decorated old cottage in excellent condition, located within walking distance of the Venus Pool. The great room is, well, great. The bedroom is cramped. Ventillation through numerous windows is very good; we didn't miss AC. My dimutive wife had difficulty climbing into the clafoot tub.

The property was just as pictured. Very comfortable in every way. It was great to explore towards Hana more and then continue to explore further from Hana as well. They made it easy with all the items you would need to enjoy the beaches and parks around the area with a cooler, chairs, flippers and umbrellas for shade. The kitchen had all you would need to cook at home. The bed was like a big hug at the end of a busy or relaxing day. The claw foot tub was fun for a nice soaking bath, but a little difficult for showers. Loved the mooing cows, clucking chickens, dropping coconuts and the geckos eating as many bugs as possible. Thank you for a wonderful stay. We would highly recommend this property.

October 2022
We had a great stay in Hana. The location was perfect for visiting the sights and there was no need to rush. The kitchen was well-stocked and had all of the essentials and more. We enjoyed grabbing dinner at the food trucks, but make sure to go early as many of them close before 5 pm or run out of food. We look forward to our next visit and would not hesitate to stay here again.

This beautiful cottage was dreamy & the hosts are most gracious!! We stayed 3 nights and our only regret is that we didn't stay longer. Within walking distance is Venus pool, and a quick drive into Hana which has some of the best foods we had in Maui. A quick 15ish min drive to 7 sacred pools. The public beaches are gorgeous & we're never crowded. Tips: - Read the book from past travelers to find out all the great places surrounding this gem of a VRBO - There is Beach equipment in the closet to left in the living room (we didn't see the boogie boards til the last day!)

Envision sunrise/sunset views over the Pacific; easy access to all that Hana has to offer; and a relaxed vibe in a restored plantation home... and you get the ultimate Hana retreat. The house was prepped and ready for us in pristine condition. It was spacious for two people, though the bedroom was very small. Appreciated the opening to the living room for air flow. It was quite hot during our stay, and even with several fans going it was bit uncomfortable. I would suggest replacing the overhead living room fan (no adjustment, low speed) and adding one to the kitchen and dining. Would be better than the floor fans. While the aesthetic of the house was beautiful, the living room was not really comfortable. The vintage couch was cute, but not comfortable, and the lounge chair kind of worked. Would have loved a couple of couches to chill on, watch a movie, after an adventureous day of hiking or swimming. Even with the screen doors closed, there were quite a few bugs inside the house (it is the jungle in reality), so that was not ideal. A wonderful respite to recoup from the Road to Hana.

This hale is the ideal Hana getaway. It captures the feel of the tropics while maintaining a sense of luxury. We have stayed at 4 different Hana VRBO properties, and have finally found "the" one we love. The hale is clean, well decorated (so much so that I posted Facebook pictures of all the little details and received lots of favorable comments), and provides an excellent base to relax from, or, never leave. We loved reclining at the end of our days on the loungers in front of the hale as the sun went down, and returning for our morning coffee to watch the sun come up. There are beautiful plants and flowers all over the property that make the outdoor time a treat in and of itself. If you are looking for a clean, high-end, comfortable, home that makes you "feel" like you are in the tropics (what I call old Hawaii) without having to give up a shred of luxury, this is your place!

This place is magic. We had come off of camping at Haleakala and Waianapanapa for two days and were so happy to have this place to land. It’s the most charming and comfortable home for two city people to unwind and slow down in. Everything you want to eat is a short drive away. Every beautiful beach you want to visit is also a short drive away. You can see the ocean from all of the front windows. The ocean breezes kept us cool at night. There are chickens that roam the property and add to the country feeling of Hana. So in summary, this place was perfect for us. This place is beautiful and charming and worth every penny. Any bug concerns were taken care of by all the fans in the house. Be kind to the locals and leave each spot as beautiful as you found it. We would gladly come back and stay here over and over again.

We owe Hana the respect of no rush exploration. This is a perfect home base. Such a peaceful experience. Well kept and authentic. We knew there would be no AC. The property had plenty fans for the warm July evenings. Thankful for the beach chairs and umbrella. We used the lawn chairs and enjoyed the ocean view. Owner came by and let us know if we needed anything he was not far, thank you.

We stayed a couple of days at this wonderful cottage and absolutely loved it! It is so close to all that Hana has to offer and we can not wait to come back. The cottage was very clean and had absolutely everything we needed for our stay. The one time we reached out to the property owner (upon departure) he answered immediately. I will never forget the views and breezes just sitting in the front loungers. Hopefully, we will make it back some day! Our favorite things to do were to visit Waioka Pond and sit on Koki Beach under the trees. Do yourself a favor and get some Huli Huli chicken on Koki beach, it is a cooperat

Such a perfect place to unwind, with fabulous sunrises every morning and walking to the Venus Pool. Don’t miss the Mahi-mahi sandwiches at Tony’s just down the road, or the hike through the bamboo forest, and enjoy coming back to this beautiful cottage.

We loved our week in this little cottage, located between Hamoa Beach and the Venus Pool. The living area is huge and beautiful, kitchen well appointed and stocked (could have used a few more glasses, though)! The bedroom is tiny, not much room for luggage, but adequate. We had no need for the many fans because of the lovely breezes. Richard was SO helpful, guided us to all the best hiking spots. The only drawback for us was the quaint claw foot tub / shower. It worked, but if we were much less agile it might have been hazardous.

January 2022
We loved this cottage. Imagine if your cool art friends had a house in Maui... flowers, art, beautiful furniture. Exceptionally well appointed kitchen. Everything we needed and more. As we suspected it was the highlight of our time in Maui. We loved Hana and hope to return to this property. Protip: try to time your trip on the famed to "road to Hana" to avoid the day trippers and don't waste your time clogging up every roadside waterfall. Also check road closures - they are working on the bridge between Hana and the National park and it is closed sometimes especially on weekends.

I had a great stay at this cottage in Hana! The place was spotless on arrival and well stocked with everything one could need. The cross breeze from all the windows were fantastic and I was comfortable the whole time, there were also lots of fans provided if you need them but I found in the winter I was comfortable without. It’s a quick drive to town but very secluded being a bit further beyond where many day trippers drive. I found it really nice to be able to walk to Venus pools and enjoyed walking down to nearby beaches. There were a lot of bugs, but that’s to be expected! (Tip: I found leaving the back patio light on helped keep the swarm in the bathroom down after dark!) The only thing I found myself wishing for was an outdoor shower head, the tub was kind of hard to climb into as a short person and an outdoor shower would have been really nice. Didn’t detract from stay at all though! Recommend this cottage and will definitely rebook the next time I’m headed to Maui.

Adorable and spacious space, tastfully decorated with great kitchen...we loved the open air space with the ocean breeze. The manager was very responsive and friendly. The only thing I would suggest is a larger and more comfortable couch and mattress for relaxing.

We loved our stay at Hale Ulu Lulu! If you're looking for a quiet, semi-rural retreat in a place with charm and character, you will love it here. If you prefer a generic, hotel-like experience with A/C, no bugs and high-speed internet, look elsewhere. It's only 3.5 miles from town, but it feels like you're in the countryside. There was plenty of cross-ventilation when both front and back doors were open. The bedroom ceiling fan does need replacement or repair, but a quiet standing fan was available, so we just used that. Information about access and parking was clearly communicated in advance. This is an older home, so, yes, it does show its age in some places, but to us, that's part of its appeal. The decor includes intriguing handicrafts from Hawaii and the South Pacific. We especially enjoyed the proximity to Hana's best swimming beach, the not-so-secret freshwater swimming hole, and long walks up the hill for ocean views from adjacent roads. Got some fresh mahi from Tony's and cooked it on the grill, served with an amazing green papaya pickled relish from Lulima Farms, YUM!!

I really hesitate to write a critical review but I believe these peer reviews contribute positively to the accountability of vacation home maintenance and the protection and comfort of their guests. We arrived to the house and the house was uncomfortably hot and had a foul smell, fans were pulling fresh air in from the front door. The house had no AC which would have been fine if there was enough airflow but multiple doors were boarded up because they had abandoned steps, this prevented the possibility for cross breeze. I understand it would be a hazard to open the doors with steps that lead to nowhere but the doors should be replaced with windows or the boards should be replaced with railings that allow for the door to be opened for ventilation. We easily overlooked the dry rot in places and the funky shower that needed maintenance but the lack of airflow is not acceptable in a humid tropical destination. The house is charming and has character and it’s obvious that someone cares because it is well stocked, nicely furnished and there were fresh flowers placed all around. The coffee maker was broken. The ceiling fan in the bedroom made a clicking noise with each revolution so we had to sleep with it off. On our second day, we went for a day trip with my brother-in-law and his wife who live on the island, we carpooled and ended at our rental house after a hike. The four of us played frisbee on the lawn for a few minutes before saying our good-byes, they didn’t even come inside. A car came tearing up our driveway and across the lawn to get to her house (rather than use her own driveway), a woman announced that she was “one of the owners” and asked us how many guests we have staying at the place. It was uncomfortable and it made us feel like we were in high school (we’re all in our late 30’s and very respectful). I got the feeling that the woman went rogue and did not represent the other owners of the property but she should be kept away from the guests. All in all it was a cute house with a lovely yard and plenty of potential to be really comfortable. I hope the appropriate measures can be taken to ensure the contentment of future guests. I would also recommend a sign at the driveway that states that it is okay to drive on the lawn because it was confusing and we had to refer to our emailed instructions to confirm that this was permissible. All our correspondence with Richard in advance of our stay was great. Hana was great.

My wife and I ended our Hawaii vacation in Hana after spending one week in O’ahu (Waikiki beach). It was the perfect place away from all the noise and commotion and just what we needed. It was like going back in time. We both loved it and felt blessed having the privilege of staying at this very special place.

April 2010
Dear Chris and Leokane,We loved Hana and Hale Ulu Lulu! Our stay was way too short. We decided to go to Hana because the Hana Highway in itself is a spectacular drive. And, there are so many natural attractions in Hana - beaches, waterfalls, etc. But, Hale Ulu Lulu is so awesome that it is worth the trip in itself. It has exquisite Mahogany floors. There are dimmers on just about every light fixture to enable you to create a really romantic setting. The kitchen is exceptionally well equipped. You will find everything you could possibly need to cook a gourmet meal. If you forget to purchase items such as Olive Oil or Balsamic Vinegar, you may find them in the pantry. There are also cloth napkins to make your dinners extra special. This cottage is so comfortable and exceptionally well maintained that I could live here permanently! The attention to detail and the comfortable furnishings make it feel more like a home than a rental. One of the things that really made Hale Ulu Lulu so memorable was "check-in". I was cranky at best when we got to Hana - really bad mood is probably more accurate. Our drive to Hana was stressful - it was raining and extremely foggy. A tree had fallen across the road and a car bumped into our rental car while we were trying to move aside to allow trucks through to clear the road. We were advised to return back to ?? and not to continue to Hana by one of the day trip tour drivers. We ignored him. When we did finally arrive at Hale Ulu Lulu, my mood changed completely! The sun was shining. The double doors were standing wide open. Hawaiian music was playing. There were orchids and Plumeria blossoms just everywhere! It is really hard to describe. This cottage is so inviting and so so romantic - just incredible. A call to see if everything was okay shortly after we arrived. All of the stress disappeared. My thoughts were - it could rain for the next three days. I could stay in this place forever - relax and do nothing. I couldn't’t think of a nicer or more romantic place to stay. One of the really unexpected pleasures of this vacation was discovering the voice of Leokane Pryor. I was fortunate enough to be able to purchase Maunahele from 7DAVID7. I could go on and on about your voice. Kipahulu, Maunahele, Ehukai, and Puamana make the stresses of the day completely melt away during a long stressful drive from work. I am anxiously waiting for your next CD. I almost forgot to mention,

March 2010
I simply cannot stop gushing about our five days in Hana at Hale Ulu Lulu. The house is really lovely and close to beautiful Hamoa Beach where we spent the majority of our days. We spent our evenings sitting in the comfy lawn chairs looking at the millions of stars. The kitchen is very well-equipped, everything you could possibly need is there. The house has a washer and dryer, and all the beach toys you need. Love the claw foot tub. We simply had a wonderful time in Hana and Hale Ulu Lulu was the reason for that. This location is perfect if you're looking for a quiet get-away worlds away from resorts. We highly recommend the Hale Ulu Lulu for a great break from reality. Jacqueline & John, Maple Ridge, BC

March 2010
We stayed here for our honeymoon and it was perfect. We loved all the thoughtful touches in the house. We can't wait to return to this slice of heaven in Hana!

March 2010
We loved our 3 nights in paradise. The beautifully decorated house is perfectly situated just outside Hana. With a five minute drive, you are at Hamoa beach. Every morning, you can watch a gorgeous sunrise over the coast and over the ocean, from the comfort of your home away from home. We found Hale Ulu Lulu to be a wonderfully relaxing place.

March 2010
Wonderful place. Cottage itself is exquisitely decorated yet has all the modern conveniences. Host (Leokane) was very welcoming and helpful. Location is simply incredible: it is only few miles to Hana in case anyone wants formal dining or casual lunch, but it is within walking distance of lovely Hamoa beach (good swimming and bodysurfing; even some snorkeling, which appears to be rare in Hana area) and Venus pools. The best thing (at least for me) is that it is possible to walk along the shoreline and, in mere 10-15 minutes, reach either Venus pools or Hamoa beach. Imagine waking up right before the sunrise and walking across the pasture, taking a dip in a tidepool, following the shore cliffs to reach Venus pools at sunrise. Lifetime memory...

March 2010
We had a relaxing stay at Hale Ulu Lulu. It was such a nice surprise to enter the house with Leokane's own Hawaiian c.d. playing! The house was very clean and nicely decorated. So many extras were included such as fresh flowers, a well stocked pantry with all of the cooking gadgets, kimono bathrobes, high count cotton sheets, dvd player, dimmed lighting, etc. It did not take long at all to feel extremely tranquil with the coziness and privacy Hale Ulu Lulu offers! Not only do we look forward to coming back to our Hana "hale", we loved the warm aloha that Leokane and Chris showed us. The bonus was listening to Leokane perform live at the Hana Hotel, such an amazing voice! In summary, I highly recommend staying at Hale Ulu Lulu, you won't be disapointed!!!

March 2010
We stayed here for three nights in March of 2009 and loved this property!! It was exactly as shown in the pictures, lovely and tasteful. Beautiful cottage in great setting. We still miss Kimo :-( Check out the little heart tattoo on his inner ear if you are lucky enough to meet him :-)

We absolutely loved your cottage. The pictures on the website don't do it justice. It is the perfect destination to lay back and enjoy the quiet side of Maui. We will definitely pay another visit to Hale Ulu Lulu and would highly recommend others do the same!

March 2010
Thank you for providing a beautiful getaway in Hana. We were so glad to be able to stay for 3 days and not do the road to and from Hana in one day. This was a perfect honeymoon cottage and we found ourselves happy to stay at the cottage and on the beautiful lawn relaxing. The sunrise was well worth getting up for; and we enjoyed Hermoa beach less than 1/2 mile away. The Hawaiin music on CD's was wonderful. No artificial silk flowers here. Live orchids welcomed us and plumeria flowers were spread throughout the house., . The gourmet kitchen was a joy to cook in and made for easy clean up. I loved the decorator colors and comfortable furnishings. Your photos do not even begin to show how beautiful Hale Ulu Lulu is. The deep claw foot tub made for wonderful bubble baths every night. Thank you for thinking and attending to every detail and checking on us to make sure we had everything we needed. You are wonderful hosts. Mahalo

March 2010
not much to add to the comments already up; the little touches like a half gallon jug of bubblebath were appreciated ; sounds of the surf play you to sleep every night ; relaxed atmosphere; if you're prone to motion sickness ask your doc for scopolamine patches before attempting the road to Hana!

March 2010
We spent our 10 year wedding anniversary at the Hale Ulu Lulu cottage and loved every minute we were there! We planned our whole trip on the availability of this cottage and we were were not disappointed. As soon as we walked in, we were amazed at how lovely everything was. We could tell from the pictures how nice it was, but the pictures don't do it justice! The sunrise in the morning is directly in front of the cottage door and you can see the ocean and hear the waves all day long. Every detail was wonderful from the flowers everywhere around the house to the stocked pantry and fridge with all the extras you can think of for cooking a gourmet meal. There wasn't anything missing! We were really bummed that we had to leave and head to Kaanapali for 4 nights after that. The rest of our trip just didn't compare to our time spent in Hana. Next trip, we will stay the entire time at the cottage. The location couldn't be more perfect. Thank you so much for having us and we can't wait to come back. It will always remain a very special place to us.

Absolutely beautiful house with everything you need for a great stay. An excellent location for exploring Hana

May 15-22 2008 Well were back to reality and already missing our haven in Hana. Hale Ulu Lulu couldn't be more perfect, very comfortable and decorated beautifully. We watch our slide show daily and see you in our dreams. We've already started to plan our next escape to your paradise. Mahalo for sharing it with us.... Dawn and Paul Mariposa, Ca.

March 2010
Feb 22-27, 2008 My husband and I were completely blown away by the beauty of the "cottage" and the loving touches throughout. Hale Ulu Lulu has just the right amount of anything you could need - including the best host dogs ever, Kimo and Ua! Chris and Leokane made sure we were well settled in and that the whole process from my first inquiry to checking out was pleasant and fun!

March 2010
January 8-14, 2008 Ah......Heavenly Hana. Heavenly Hale Ulu Lulu! I am back at work remembering the peace and beauty of this special place in Hawaii. As I look out my office window at the snow that has been piling up here in the Adirondack Mountains, I am warmed by Leokane's lovely CD and the memories of sunrises seen from Hale Ulu Lulu. Thank you for sharing your special guesthouse. The view, the special amenities, and the lovingly restored and cared for cottage made our stay so memorable. We so enjoyed sharing a glass of wine and restoration stories with Leokane and appreciated Chris' help connecting to the internet. The dogs were an added delight! The local books you provided, the suggestions for sightseeing, and Leokane's music offered an opportunity for a much deeper understanding and respect for the culture of Hawaii--and especially of Hana. We were blessed to be able to spend six relaxing days in this special place. Hale Ulu Lulu and the special men who so lovingly care for it will remain a treasured memory. Kathy and Don Duley Plattsburgh, New York

The Hale Ulu Lulu is just what one would want to find at the end of the road . . . your beautiful cottage, with the music playing, the ocean out front, is a welcoming, comfortable retreat. We really enjoyed being at your cottage, a place without the usual hotel-style "baggage". Kimo and Ua were especially welcoming staff members. Thanks. Jeffrey and Oscar
