IDEAL GUESTS: returning Maui visitors that want to experience something different than the resort sides of Maui. Or first time guests that want to experience Maui like a local resident away from the hustle and bustle of the tourist areas. We recommend first time guests split their time between 2 sides of the island to have the full island experience. Many guests stay with us to explore the North shore, Hana and Haleakala as we are in the ideal location to these beautiful wonders of maui.

STAYING ON THE NORTH SHORE OF MAUI:
We like to let guests know that we are located on the non-touristy side of the island. All sides of maui are quite different and each season is different on each side of the island as well. Our north shore is great for adventurous guests looking for a quiet getaway in a local residence, while exploring the surrounding towns and north shore of maui. Our surrounding small towns are great for shopping and getting lunch or early dinner as shops close by 5pm and restaurants by 8:30-9pm. Unfortunately we don't have much night life to offer on our side of the island since mostly locals reside here. Our beaches on the north shore are known for surf waves and windsurfing- great for experienced surfers/windsurfers, people watching or sunbathing however many are not usually calm for swimming or snorkeling October thru May. For beginner surfers and all snorkelers we recommend a day trip to the west or south shores where you can rent surf boards/ snorkeling gear, get a lesson and the beaches have sandy bottoms where it is ideal for these activities.

The North shore is located on the edge of the rainforest which makes our area beautifully green and lush this is because we get enough natural rain year round to keep everything green without watering systems. We do have seasons on island and during winter months you can expect more rain on the north shore. We also get natural tradewinds year round that usually keeps our north shore 5-10 degrees cooler than the tourist sides of the island and cools down our evening temps, which is a blessing. Our warmest months are usually June through October, where we can get the warmer temps, high of 80-90 degrees F and evenings 70-75 degrees F. In the winter months we usually do not get colder temps than 65 degrees F rarely, therefore our north shore homes were not built with air conditioning or heating systems, just ceiling fans and windows to self regulate our homes inside temperature.

It is good to remember though that Maui is a tropical island, so our temperatures are humid and an average high of 75-85 degrees F. When you first arrive on island our temperatures can feel warmer than what you are used to at home until you get acclimated to the weather. So we like to mention if you live in air conditioning at your house and like your home on the cooler side then our place will not be a good fit for you.

Your stay is important to us and we want to make sure your vacation expectations are met while on island. If you are looking to experience what it is like to live in traditional home in a local Maui neighborhood and explore the island, we are in a great location to do that. However if being close to calm beaches, night life and where more action is, we actually recommend guests stay in Kaanapali or Kihei on the south and west shores of maui. These areas are in the best locations on island for weather and the Maui experience you have seen in magazines and movies. In these areas you are close to everything and you can just do a day trip to the north shore to check it out. We give you this information as we want you to have the best visit to the islands!

We respect our guests and have camera notifications turned off during your stay except during late night hours or in an emergency. The 4 cameras on property are located in visible places that are outside in the front yards facing directions that would not compromise privacy during your stay. See our house handbook during your stay for more information.

We had a great stay. Not only was it clean and organized but everything was well explained. Nothing was missing. We’ll definitely be keeping this place in mind for our next visit!

The house is a wonderful accommodation for families with three bedrooms, kitchen, and tv (with Netflix!). Appreciated the outdoor shower which I used every day. This is a great location for exploring the north shore of Maui including upcountry Maui which we did—despite it raining for four days straight (late December trip). Found Maui to have many microclimates and while raining in one spot it’s completely dry and sunny 15 minutes down the road.

This home had ample parking (important for our 2 small work trucks), thoughtfully designed interior spaces with all that we needed to cook and prepare meals, and sleep comfortably with 3 people each in a separate room. Our host was easy to communicate with and left detailed information about the home and nearby amenities. The nearby bakery/breakfast place was also a stand-out and only a 3 minute walk from the cottage. We'll definitely plan to book here again in the near future! Thanks again to our hosts - this home is amazing!

This was a fantastic place to stay. Within minutes we could be on the road to Hana, which was our favorite of Maui. The house was perfect, and we appreciated the private outside shower to wash the sand off so we didn’t track anything inside. Our host left little Hawaiin touches for us that was fun for us, especially our kids to have. Things like Hawaiin chips, Hawaiin made macadamias nut chocolates and a couple other items that was great to finally get to Hawaii after such a long plan flight and feel welcomed to Hawaii. Our was amazing and very understanding when we communicated with her on a couple different items. We don’t have a single complaint or negative thing to say about our experience here.

Great place to stay for exploring north Maui. Very comfortable and cute 3 bedrooms. Clear communication from the owner. Loved having the market and cafe out the back gate. Great sushi restaurant in nearby Haiku and close to Paia with wonderful restaurants, beaches and boutiques.

Our family of 5 stayed here for two nights in between resorts in west Maui and Wailea. It was the perfect change of pace. You get enmeshed in a local community with a great cafe and restaurant nearby. Location is perfect to spend quality time in Paia and it’s right off the road to Hana—so you can deep dive into some of the sites, like twin falls. And the drive to Halakelea and upcountry is much easier here. The place is perfect and well stocked. The three bedrooms were perfect for our family. Only minor complaint is it get stuffy at night and the fans are all pretty weak. With the addition of some more powerful fans in the rooms this would be six stars!

Initially told, we could not check in until 4 pm. House cleaners finished early. The owner, Amy notified me and we were able to get in at 3pm. After spending 8 days in the hustle bustle of Kehei, this house was peaceful and quiet. We would stay there again.

This location is a perfect mix of away from everything but close enough to everything. The house is adorable. Three bedrooms, one bath and an AMAZING outdoor shower. Baked on Maui is a two minute walk out the back door. A kid friendly beach is 10 minutes away and the Road to Hana is just down the street. My kids were 10 and 8 and we would stay here again.

We were a bit disappointed by location - didn’t have a holiday vibe as was literally in the middle of a suburb. Neighbourhood noises and not great privacy from other house and owners and visiting trade. House was thoughtfully equipped to make stay comfortable which is the biggest plus point. Fans need upgrading - fiddly to put on and main one in bedroom stopped working so it was uncomfortably muggy in a double bed. Laundry unavailable to guests. Just felt compared to other places we stayed at same price point we got much better location and standard.

We wanted to get away from the more touristy areas of Maui, and this house was perfect, easy to feel like a local when you're here! Baked on Maui is steps from the back door. Very quiet neighbourhood, and close to Paia, which was a great town. The binder left out by the owners contains more information then I've EVER seen in a VRBO rental! So many suggestions, etc. This is a very well cared for property and the owners clearly care very much that their guests have a great stay. Thank you!

We really enjoyed our stay at this beautiful home. We enjoyed our stay at this clean and nicely organized house. It's got a nice vibe to it. There is a giant mango tree in the yard which is pretty cool! It drops mangos a lot, which can be startling , but it's part of the uniqueness of the place and Maui!

Lovely private relaxing cottage in Haiku, HI! Nice neighborhood with a store and coffee shop/ restaurant a short walk. Owner has done a great job with the set up, organization, instructions, guides and safety for this rental unit with many amenities. They even supplied a nice welcome basket of snacks.

This was a great spot to change up our Maui vacation after leaving the resorts. We were able to get to both Hana and Haleakala effortlessly. Paia was a cute little town. We had the best meal at Cafe des Amies. And sushi was fantastic at Nuka. House was perfect for our needs. We didn’t need the third bedroom and we’re bummed. It to shower outside due to weather. Would definitely stay here again and recommend. Wish we could stay longer. Mahalo.

Amy was so easy to work with and responded quickly to our request. Her home was welcoming and the location was close to many Maui attractions. There was a guide for all the things to do in the area, as well as the history of the house itself. We are grateful for the beauty they could see in the place, which allowed us to enjoy our own little slice of paradise while we were there.

Thank you so much for a great stay in Haiku! The property was in great condition with so much helpful information and effort put into explanations and details. The location was excellent for me and everything about this lovely place shows the care and Aloha that the owners have put into it. Quiet and relaxing area and great communication with the owner were greatly appreciated! Mahalo!

This is my second stay on Maui and this home was just perfect. It was clean and well thought out. The outdoor shower is great for after the beach and just a calm, peaceful shower outdoors. The kitchen is very well stocked, the beds were so comfy, the laundry was a nice perk and the home was very cute. The outdoor area was great for relaxing and it was fun picking up the huge avocados that fell. We loved going out the back gate to Baked on Maui or the Pauwela General Store. Makawao is just 15 mins away. The summit of Haleakala is about 1 hr 15 mins and the home is just near the start of Road to Hana. Baby beach and hookipa beach were close and beautiful. It’s about an hour drive to Lahaina for parasailing or 45 mins to snorkeling. I would stay here again!

We loved our stay in this wonderful cottage in the lush green countryside located in a quiet part of Maui. The accommodations were clean and comfortable, filled with personal artistic touches by the owners. The owners communicated clearly and quickly, and even surprised us with a welcome basket of treats. We enjoyed fruit from the yard, including avocado and grapefruit. The location was central to many classic Maui activities, especially convenient for day trips to Hana and Haleakala. We highly recommend this property!

October 2021
Cute property in Haiku, owners have done a good job renovating and decorating property. Location close to Paia and wonderful coffee shop in Haiku. We arrived after dark so initially went to wrong house as owner has 2 houses on property, but figured it out with help of Amy! Home is a bit smaller than appeared in photos and one small bathroom with little ventilation was tight for our group of 5 adults but towels and toiletries provided were nice. We are used to leaving the properties we rent clean, but also thought a couple items on the cleaning list for check out were particular (like all dishes must be clean and put away in cabinets-- most places it's put dishes in dishwasher and start) considering the cleaning fee. All in all, the property was nice and we would stay there again.

Amy and Joel are amazing hosts. They communicated clearly and easily with us before our stay. The Surf House is in an excellent location minutes away from great restaurants and amazing attractions. The attention to detail was very apparent from the moment you enter the house. Little notes were left on all lights and appliances so you immediately used the home the way the owners do. It was truly an amazing stay and we look forward to booking this home again in the future.

The location, ambiance, and details were perfect for our family of 5. Maui was the last of our 3 islands to visit and we tried to avoid all the tourists. Having the space in Haiku with interaction with locals at the bakery and store were awesome. Amy had tons of things available to help us find some untourist experiences. My kids really appreciated the beach accessories and we all had to try an outdoor shower. The well equipped kitchen and games were also family favorites. We could’ve stayed a month. Great place to get away from the tourist commotion and connect as a family while still enjoying all the adventures on the east side of the island.

Note: Vacancy calendar is approximate. Visit the owner/manager's reservation site to verify your dates.
