Aloha! E komo mai. Welcome to our Hawaiʻi Island home, or hale (pronounced HA-LAY). Located in Volcano Village, and just minutes from Hawaii Volcanoes National Park, we invite you to make our fully permitted house your home away from home during your next visit.

Hale Hubner Treehouse Cottage is perfect for friends, couples, and small groups or families that wish to experience the peaceful Volcano lifestyle at its best. We also offer a wonderful retreat for kama'aina looking to get away. Comfortably nestled in the lush hapu'u fern and ohia rainforest, you will find our location offers relaxing comfort and privacy all the while keeping you close to the variety nearby attractions the Big Island has to offer.

Our house is a cozy 750 sq ft studio-style custom-built 1 bed/1 bath that sleeps 2-4 people comfortably. The warm pine wood interior naturally juxtaposes the green views of lush vegetation visible from all the large picture windows throughout the house. A spacious lanai greets you as you exit the house, and provides excellent views of the vibrant stars during the dark evenings.

A master bed area is walled off for your privacy, and a queen-size futon in the main living area folds out to provide a second bed for additional travelers. The main living/sleeping area is located on the second level of the house and is only accessible by stairs; therefore, we are unfortunately not accessible for visitors with disabilities that prevent the climbing of steps. For families looking to stay with us, we prefer there be at least one adult per child, if possible.

Volcano is situated at 4000 ft elevation in ʻōhi'a and hapu'u rain forest. This means that the climate is not quite what most people expect when they think of Hawai'i. It is cooler in Volcano (upper 70's in daytime to 50's in evenings and even cooler during winter months), so bring some cooler weather clothes so that you don't miss out seeing the volcano at night. Also, bring a jacket or rain poncho so that you do not miss out on outdoor activities because of rain or random shower. We have electric heaters and heated mattress pads in the home, but Treehouse Cottage is best-heated by our large wood burning stove. If your stay will fall during December through February, and you are not sure about operating a wood stove or sensitive to cold climate, please reach out to me before booking or consider looking at our Fern Cottage, which is also in Volcano and has a gas stove for heating and is more insulated. We provide starters, kindling and wood to help you on the first night, especially if you are arriving later in the evening. There are stores in Volcano Village and in the National Park that have firewood and additional starters for sale. If you have any questions, please donʻt hesitate to reach out. We want you to have the best comfortable stay possible! We strive to provide a warm and inviting stress-free yet affordable alternative to the big resorts. We hope you like what you see here and choose Hale Hubner Treehouse Cottage for your next visit to the Big Island. If this property is unavailable, or if you're looking for more space for your party, consider taking a look at our other Volcano property (VRBO #1457205). Mahalo!

We loved Volcano National Park. The house was okay. We stay in a lot of VRBO’s. This one was not the best.

It was fantastic, very pleased with the property. If I had to make any suggestion it would be to have a portable fan available, it’s cool in the morning but sometimes muggy at bedtime :)

We stayed here for a couple nights when we went to Volcanoes National Park. It was less than ten minutes to park entrance. We felt like we were staying in a treehouse in the jungle. Very peaceful and most of the time all we could hear were birds and frogs. We had one small problem with a GFI outlet tripping when we arrived, but we called the owner and it was taken care of that night. The kitchen was well stocked and the futon had a great mattress. Really enjoyed everything here!

Staying in the treehouse was very memorable! Waking up to the lush fauna surrounding us and having breakfast on the lanai was very pleasant. The host did an incredible job explaining everything at the treehouse and communicating throughout our stay. We had no troubles and appreciate Matt sharing his unique space.

We enjoyed our stay at this interesting space. Matt has created a cozy and usable space with everything you might need to settle in. It is close to the National Park, so you can zip over to take in a hike or two, come back and eat lunch, and go again. We didn't watch TV, but the DVD library was impressive. We did use the bluetooth soundbar for music. The washer and dryer served us well, and there were ample kitchen utensils. And the price point made for a very reasonable stay. Matt was extremely responsive and helpful. Thanks.

Great communication with the owner, no issue with checkin! Owner provided a map to help find the place, which was helpful. The home is located in a semi-rural development near the park, so it can be tricky to navigate the narrow roads. There's a swing gate at the property with a combination lock on a chain, to give you an idea of the setting. The home is located a very short drive from the entrance to the park. We got up early every day and arrived before just about anybody else, which gave us a wonderful private experience. Highly recommended, especially the Kilauea Ike trail, which had us crossing the crater itself. It was a surreal experience. It's a woodsy house, and the area is very humid. The owner has a dehumidifier running through the day. Expect the home to be a bit cold and maybe a bit dank, because of the humidity, but it goes with the neighborhood. There's a wood burning stove and electric heaters for heating-up the home, and there's an electric blanket (mattress cover) on the bed which is quite nice. There's bottled water to drink, which was appreciated. Thank you for a great time in Volcano!

This great little house on the outskirts of Volcano Village feels off the beaten track and yet very close to the entry to Volcanoes National Park. Huge windows and a deck allow you to see the giant ferns and trees that surround the property. The house is well-equipped and charmingly rustic. We were fortunate to have excellent weather for our visits of the park. We definitely recommend Treehouse Cottage for anyone looking to stay in this area.

We had a wonderful time. It gets cold at night in winter and having the wood burning fireplace was so nice.

Almost off-the-grid, very quiet, down a long dirt road, in a gorgeous fern forest. This is an idyllic place to get away from it all and still be very close to volcano natl park. Bring groceries. Conserve water: it's rainwater collected on the property.

We have stayed here several times and love it. Has everything you need. A great place to stay and explore the other side of the Big Island.

January 2024
Real nice place, great seclusion and access to the park. 2 things that could stand attention- some cleanup of extension chords & electric outlets- particularly if you have young kids- we did not. And the wood burning stove was nice touch, but vent on right door needs cleaning as it wouldn’t draft well when closed. Neither would stop us from renting again

December 2023
We thoroughly enjoyed our stay in the Treehouse Cottage. The instructions, directions, information provided by the Host(s) were fabulous and extremely helpful. The Cottage itself was very well stocked, so if you have enough time to go straight to check in before making any grocery purchases, I highly recommend doing so. Also, bring thermals or warmer clothes for nightime, it does get very cold and damp, even inside the Cottage. The Wood Burning Fireplace, Electric Heater, and the Bed warmers were definitely needed and used. It was difficult to find replacement firelogs in the local area, so if you find some, grab one or two for the Cottage. We LOVED the Rainforest. The location and the overall atmosphere of the Cottage and the neighborhood was awe inspiring. The only issue we had really was being unable to use the beautiful porch and grill outside due to the Weather, is was very wet and cold most days/nights. But WOW, what a great stay. Will highly recommend to our friends, family, and anyone traveling to the Big Island in the near future. Thank you so much for the experience and the privilege of using your Beautiful Treehouse. Will hopefully visit again in the future, and we know who to contact. Respectfully, the Spaldings <3

We are very happy we stayed at the treehouse! It is just the right comfort level for 2 easygoing people, being a grandmother/granddaughter twosome. Everything worked as expected. The outside deck was delightful and the view wonderful the big windows. We enjoyed seeing interesting birds ie. the Kalij Pheasants near the road everyday. I totally recommend staying at this pleasant cabin!

November 2023
We arrived after dark and we’re able to get into the property using the instructions provided. But when we entered the home, it was very difficult to find light switches. We had to feel around in the dark and turn on lamps to not run into anything. And we didn’t realize the water from the faucets was undrinkable. We had brought a 2 liter bottle, but it wasn’t enough for drinking, brushing teeth and making coffee. I understand the owner not providing paper towels and tissues for a long stay, but we were only there one night and had to bring these items with us while only using a portion of them. The location in the rain forest was great and we slept well with the windows opened listening to night sounds from outside. It rained, so we weren’t able to use the patio, which looked more comfy than the futon couch inside. Overall, a great one time experience.

Great house, great location, loved it! One FYI: the bathroom walls don't go all the way to the ceiling so you can hear family members using the bathroom. We managed fine.

When I originally booked this for me and my wife, it was when the lava was flowing at Volcanoes NP. As often happens, the lava stopped some weeks later. "Oh well!" I thought, "We'll just go and see what there is." However, just before we arrived from Maui (we had been on Maui 7 days prior) there was another eruption...nothing too major but an amazing sight nonetheless, especially at night. I mention "night" because this place is literally a hop, skip and a jump from the entrance to the park. Some folks at the night viewing had traveled 2 hours just to get there and were looking at a 2 hour trip back to wherever they were staying. Not us. Availability at the Lodge there at the park? Nothing till well after August. Pricing? Much more than we paid for this very quaint "treehouse." I gave all 5 star ratings except for cleanliness. It's not that the place wasn't clean, it just had lots of cobwebs scattered around that hadn't been brushed aside. But hey, this is in the middle of the rain forest! I just wanted to mention it in case someone might have an issue with cobwebs. In my case, I'm a 70 year old hippy so no issue. Aside from that, it was a gift to be near the NP...and at such a quiet rustic place so close to nature. The iron stove heater in the living area worked like a charm. We used it to heat the place in the wee hours of the morning. We did bring starter logs, and it only required an additional few pieces of wood to heat the home up nice and warm. Recommend? Absolutely!

June 2023
Wonderful location for visiting Volcanoes National Park - less than 15 min from the door to viewing Kilauea! We enjoyed the beautiful flowers and birds that surrounded the treehouse cottage and the nice privacy it provided. We took lots of walks in the surrounding area and always felt happy and safe. Hope to be able to visit again some day!

February 2023
Lovely little treehouse overlooking hapuu ferns and Ohia trees. The lanai was a perfect place to sit and listen to the birds when it was not raining. The electric fireplace kept the bedroom nice and warm. It is convenient to the park and Volcano Village. We especially enjoyed viewing the crater in the early morning before the crowds began to gather. Matt was very easy to communicate with and very helpful.

January 2023
Our stay at the Tree House was amazing, everything we expected and more! It was actually quite easy to find and the location was perfect for us to go back and forth the Volcanos National Park for hiking and viewing Kīlauea. The property was beautiful, quite and serene and had all the modern amenities (and more) we needed for a comfortable stay. We did not have a chance to use the wood stove and found the electric mattress pad and electric heaters to be enough to keep us cozy. Only thing I really missed was seeing the incredible view of the stars that everyone talked about since we had cloud cover every night. We loved the Thai food from Aunty Pon's Food truck and Thai Thai restaurant. There were not a lot of places in that area that were open later so be sure to plan ahead. If we return to that area of the Big Island this will be the first place we look to stay! Thanks for having us at your home!

Convenient and comfy for visiting Volcanoes NP. Great light and authentic Hawaii rainforest experience. Perfect for 1 couple. Wifi very fast and secure. Google maps worked beautifully, as did Matt's map.

August 2022
Very nice property surrounded by beautiful dense jungle. Feels secluded even though it is not all that far from other houses. Some barking from a nearby dog in the evenings. Inside is nice but you must be into a little rustic feel, which is fine with us.

July 2022
We really enjoyed our stay at this adorable, private and quiet treehouse cottage so close to the park! Everything we needed was supplied and the lack of A/C was not an issue. My husband scoffed at the heated mattress pad and heaters supplied but we ended up using them, ha! The kids were very comfortable on the futon sleeper and were glad of the extra blankets in the cottage. We used the washer and dryer as well. We forgot to purchase paper towels and there weren't any, also we were confused about the recycling vs trash. All in all it was a fabulous place! Warning, if you like to have groceries on hand or food, buy it in Hilo - the store was closed on Tuesday and we were at the park all day on Wednesday so we had to commute both times to buy supplies.

June 2022
This was our second stay at Hale Hubner, and it was every bit as good as the first! The location is perfect: very close to Hawaii Volcanoes National Park, and on the edge of the town of Volcano, and yet in a secluded and private location. The feel really is of being in a tree house! My favorite part of the cabin is the large and well furnished lanai: the first time we were here it rained too much to use it, but this time we got enough sun to spend some time out there surrounded by the rain forest. Truly lovely, private, quiet and restful. I also think this place is an excellent value: I encourage other visitors to add time to their trip to Volcano: much less expensive here than most condos on the Kona side, with more privacy, and there is so much to see and do! Next time we plan to stay a week. There was lots of wood for the wood stove, which was nice to see, but it was warm enough Memorial Day weekend that we didn't bother: at night we just turned on the electric fireplace in the bedroom area. Only one real issue to keep in mind if you cook a lot: there is no dishwasher, and we found ourselves spending more time and water than we would have wanted doing dishes. However, there are excellent restaurants in Volcano, so that might be a good excuse for others to go out more. The other potential issue that turned out to be a non-issue: we wanted to visit the National Park at night to see the currently active lava lake/crater eruption (definitely a must do!) and we were both a little nervous about finding our way back to the cabin at night in the dark, and it does get dark at night!. The road to the cabin from the town of Volcano is paved the entire way, but it is one lane in places, without streetlights (a good thing for star gazing) and goes through a semi-rural area with lots of vegetation. However, there is a light you can leave on that is visible from the road, and as it turned out, it was not even a concern at all after we memorized a few landmarks along the way. I don't know why we were even worried, but given that landmarks helped, I do recommend coming for the first time during daylight hours if possible. If not, be sure you print out the instructions Matt will give you, they are excellent. (as is his communication in general). Once again, I recommend this place highly, especially for those looking for a lovely, comfortable cabin in the rain forest as opposed to a high end, luxury experience. Don't skip Volcano! Thank you Hale Hubner!

My husband and I had a wonderful 4 days at Hale Hubner and we loved every second of it! Lots of space for the two of us and a fabulous deck surrounded by jungle, but still so close to Volcano Village and the National Park. Superb location and Matt was such a great host! We would love to come back! Mahalo Matt, for a perfect vacation!

This cottage is comfortable, clean, and relaxing, with magical views of the tree fern forest. Easy to reach the volcano area and beaches. The furniture is really cool and fits the cabin style. I personally slept on the futon and found it really comfortable – much more sturdy and comfortable than a typical futon. We hope to be back someday. Mahalo.

We could off not pick a better place for our family! We were able to go exploring the volcano national park just 5 minute drive away and come back to enjoy a nice meal at home; games and cozying it up by the fire with the family surrounded by beautiful vegetation. Being abs to Feel the rawness Hawaii! The beauty of creation! The peace and calm of the forest quiet noises. We had an unforgettable experience! 💕.

The place is really cool, certainly reminds you of being in a modern tree house! It was super clean and comfortable. Loved all the huge ferns and tropical plants that surround the home. Proximity to Hawaii Volcano National Park is great 2-3 miles. Wonderful Thai food restaurant very close too.

February 2022
This was a fantastic place to find when visiting the Big Island! When researching where to stay for my three days exploring the Hilo side of the island, I am so glad I chose to stay in Volcano Village! Getting to VNP early was vital to how well our time was spent at the Volcano and we were literally 8 minutes from the entrance here. Hilo itself wasn't far and we spent the day checking out the local waterfalls close by Hilo, just a gorgeous place. This rental is very charming! The patio is large and the stars are amazing from it! The place is full of windows and there are labels for what everything is and does everywhere, which as a hyper organized person, I loved. Matt was great to communicate with, very easy to get ahold of, and there were no issues at all. There was also a ton of information at the house for all the activities close by. I was worried we wouldn't have restaurants but there was actually great places to eat in Volcano for as small as it was! The local Thai food was unbelievable!!!! Overall this was such a charming, fun, beautiful place to visit and I would 10/10 recommend it to anyone.

November 2021
We had a wonderful time staying at this property, which was an excellent base for visiting Volcanoes National Park (just a few minutes away). The property was awesome--a true treehouse-like experience in a very secluded, jungle-y environment. The unit was well-stocked and we had everything needed for a fantastic time on the Hilo side of the island. A special thank you to the property owner, Matt, who graciously provided some extra flexibility due to COVID-related events that occurred before our trip. We are so thankful that it worked out to stay at this property--highly recommended!

November 2021
The house was clean, beautiful and in the middle of a tropical rain forest. If you're looking for seclusion, this is the place. Though secluded, it is close to some great restaurants, Volcano National Park and a short distance from Hilo. The owners are very responsive to all inquiries. I highly recommend this beautiful house.

The house was great and Matt went out of his way to provide a ton of information to make our check-in and stay easy. The location to Volcano National Park was great. Any closer and we would have been inside the park. The home had all we needed and made our trip to the park very convenient. I’d definitely stay here again. It was beautiful and really does make it feel like you’re staying in the rainforest trees!

August 2021
The house was perfect for our family of 3. It was cozy, tucked away in the native forest where you could sit out on the deck and watch many of the Hawaiian Honeycreepers. The National Park is just minutes away. We spent our days hiking, returning to Hale Hubner for a relaxing night sitting around the wood burning stove. Perfect house for anyone needing to escape!

June 2021
After having to cancel our trip last year due to Covid, Matt was really easy to work with on rescheduling our trip a year later. The property is so unique and was everything we could have hoped for. Minutes away from Volcano NP made our National Park days easy. Wish we booked our stay here longer. I highly recommend this VRBO especially if you want something different than the hotel experience.

This is a very unique property that really gets you away from the hustle and bustle of your typical vaction rental. The house is very clean, well stocked and super private. It is a great location if you are looking to explore Volcano National Park as it is literally minutes away. Matt is very easy to work with and answered any questions or communications within minutes. Highly recommend this for couples looking for a quiet getaway.

May 2021
Hale Hubner was our perfect, low-key treehouse of respite. Stopped in Captain Cook for groceries and firewood and managed to make some good coffee and grilled steaks while there. Easiest access to the volcano and All The Trails. Ended a long day of hiking sitting on the futon and watching the rain come down on the ferns. My partner appreciated the sudoku books. I had also brought my own 'travel kitchen' of a few sharp knives but never really needed them. The electric bed warmer was a stroke of genius as it did get rather chilly at night and the bedroom heater was a bit hard to figure out. Oh and the STARS! Our first night there had clear night skies and we both were awed when we saw the milky way with our naked eyes. So many people who come to Hawaii miss out on the magic of this side of the island. If you're looking for peace and quiet away from the hubbub of tourism, with cool mountain air and lush greenery everywhere, this be it.

March 2020
We enjoyed our stay. Communication with Matt was great. Our coffemaker died the first morning and a replacement arrived the same day. Appreciated the games and information about things to do. This rental is down a long, bumpy road in the rainforest and most of the places had gates and chains. The location is very close to Volcanoes National Park and an easy drive to Hilo. Be sure to bring to food with you (as we did) as grocery options are very limited. The thai restaurant in town was excellent--best spring rolls ever!

Place was just what we were looking for. Do have to say that it was a bit colder than we thought it would be, but other than that we had a great stay.

February 2020
We were so excited to stay here, and we ended up loving it. I have never seen so many stars as I have from the patio. It was a very easy drive to the National Park, and not too bad to Hilo. The house has all of the basics you will need, although definitely basic. If you are used to or expecting comparable to what you might get at a big beach resort VRBO, you will be disappointed. But if you want something charming and different, which for us was the while point, do not hesitate to book Matt’s treehouse! We enjoyed seeing a different side of Hawaii.

Daniel B.
February 2020
Good base for exploring the park. Planing and details were easy. Enjoyed our time there.

November 2019
It was in the rain forest. Nice to hear the rain on the roof. As we were there in November it was cool in the evenings and mornings. The main source of heat was the wood stove but we didn’t use it. The electric mattress/blanket was great. Matt(owner) takes pride in his place and it showed with his thorough information

November 2019
In the heart of volcano park , the house has all you need for a great stay and is superbly situated amount the trees.

November 2017
Fantastic place to stay while in Volcano! This house in the trees has many HUGE windows so you feel like you are in the jungle. The home is clean, well maintained, and the kitchen is better stocked than any we have rented. There is a beautiful deck among the ferns that makes for a romantic dinner under the stars. Two words of advice for visitors. If you are cooking get your supplies before arriving. Only camp general stores are in "town" and the prices reflect limited supply and high demand. Second STAY IN VOLCANO, there is nothing that compares to seeing the volcano at night. It is a mere 5 minute drive, plus you'll enjoy the park without the tour buses. This is a beautiful, peaceful house. Don't miss it!

November 2017
We only stayed for two nights, but enjoyed our visit and wished we could have stayed longer. The house was clean and comfortable and withing 10 or 15 minutes of the National Park. The night temperature was a cool 59F, but there is a fireplace (we didn't use or need) if you get too cold. The house seems isolated, but is actually very close to neighbors--you just can't see them because of the tropical jungle. There is a flight of steps and people with mobility issues might have a problem. Also, as per the house plan, you need to walk through the bedroom to get to the bathroom which might be a slight problem if you have a third person staying on the futon. We would definitely stay again.

October 2017
We stayed here after a few days in Kona to have a closer jumping off point to the national park. It was quite a dramatic shift and a great, unique experience. Driving down the long one lane road was like driving into another world. I was a little nervous being in the jungle at night at first but this place was very comfortable and enjoyable. Nights got surprisingly cold but the electric fireplace was great. The house had everything we could have needed, including a cooler and ice packs for our treks in search of lava flows. The only thing that took some getting used to was the bathroom ceiling being open to the rest of the place - you just need to be comfortable with the people who are in the house with you!

This the perfect place to stay! Great attention paid to the needs of travelers. Being so close to the park was nice. Information that was sent regarding directions, check instructions and tips for the visit were very helpful and accurate. Home is comfortable, beautiful and extremely well maintained. Would love to visit again!

Great rental experience , Matt was a great host providing me with all the info I needed before and during arrival. I appreciated the forethought Matt had for guests in his home. It was a nice peaceful experience relaxing in a tropical jungle. It was really close to volcano's national park which was perfect for excursions.

We have stayed at several VRBO rentals, and this is truly our favorite! The directions were exact - a good thing since we arrived in an incredible downpour which decreased visibility (Hurricane Ana was passing to the west of the island that day). It is in a neighborhood, but VERY private. Nice to have parking under the home, with said rain. Up a set of stairs to a wonderful balcony perfect for wine, meals, and reading that also had pots of fresh herbs to use for cooking. The home itself is a large open square with a bump out for the bed. The walls separating the bedroom go to about 8 feet, but not all the way to the vault of the roof line - so the bedroom and bath are "open air" to the main living area. the bathroom is in the bedroom enclosure. For the 2 of us, not a problem, but something of which to be aware of if more than one couple is staying. Bring an eye mask as the sun comes up at 6! This is the best stocked place at which we have stayed - a well stocked kitchen both in cooking equipment/decent chopping knives (unusual to find in a rental!) and in condiments/spices, along with a gas grill on the patio. In addition, there are umbrellas and plastic rain ponchos (handy in a rain forest), snorkel fins and 2 of those grass woven beach pad things. There were also toddler toys, a port-a-crib, and past editions of several Hawaii guidebooks for use. Probably the best thing, though, was how the owners emailed so much information about the area and were even in contact with us regarding the Hurricane and any possible upsets the weather may have brought to our visit (thankfully, there were none. After the rainy initial day and night rains, the days were wonderful for hiking in Volcano Park). Though we have been lucky to always work with good owners, we have not had an experience with so much available information to help us plan in addition to the "what to do if" email before the Hurricane passed, and their kindness was very much appreciated!

My wife and I had the perfect getaway staying at Hale Hubner. Matt & Tara although not there provided outstanding hospitality. the place was exactly as described, tucked away in a quiet area of Volcano. Location and area were perfect. we have been highly recommending this place to family and friends since we arrived and since returning home. We will book again when we come back to the big island. you will not find a better place or hosts than this.

Thoroughly recommend this property as the owners have really gone out of their way to make your stay as comfortable and informative as possible. Volcano national park is only 10min drive away and Mauna Kea approx 1hr. The property is secluded from neighbours and has everything you need for comfortable living also fully stocked DVD collection and wood burner (not essential but very useful after midnight trips to the volcano). We would say that visiting the volcano late at night is best as you tend to be amongst only a few people (if any at all) and it's far more dramatic as you see it's glow and can hear it's rumbling noises, also the night sky is amazing, just as good as at Mauna Kea and much easier to drive to. This property worked for us and judging by the favourable comments in the house guest book hasn't disappointed anybody so we can't recommend it enough. The owners use it also as their holiday home and they have a young child, so should suit most people. Thank you.

What a great place this was. We chose it because of the reviews, and all the reviews were right on. It was clean, quiet and close to everything you want to do in Volcano. They thought of everything, we were even so surprised to see toys and books for our two year old. We are already planning our next stay here. It truly felt like a vacation home.

We absolutely loved this place. It had everything we needed. It had great natural light and it was completely charming and perfect for the first couple of days of our honeymoon. We miss it already and will absolutely rent it again if we return to the Big Island! Thanks again Matt for a lovely stay.

We really enjoyed our stay here it is in a fantastic location surrounded by forest, close enough to the park, only 15 minutes to the volcano, to go any time of the day or night. It is only 45 mins easy drive to Hilo where there are some good stores and a market. Take a drive on the scenic tour past Hilo which takes you along the ocean and past some waterfalls and beautiful scenery, if you keep going a little further dont miss Akaka falls. It is about 2 hours to Kona with its beautiful beaches and many art and knick knack stores, we had an unforgettable night swim with the mantas rays there it was well worth the trip. Along the highway on the way before Kona there are many antique and art stores that are well worth a visit, and dont miss the Puuhonua O Honaunau Historical National Park with its Tiki statues and artifacts! The Kapoho tide pools are about an hour away and are a definite must see, we went a few times. There are many different types of fish and coral to see, the highlight was just before the hurricane came in, it was incredible how many fish were. If you go there dont miss the scenic drive through the trees and along the ocean. Also dont miss the macadamia farm on the way into Hilo with all its different flavors, wasabi and teriyaki being my all time favorite. The property itself was as advertised we absolutely loved it. It was well maintained and the owners are very helpful and caring especially when the hurricane came through, which the house weathered with no problem at all. Even though power was out for a day or so due to the hurricane, it did not detract from our stay as the house is in such a wonderful location you kind of forget your worries and just throw another log on the fire. (Hurricanes come through extremely rarely we just got lucky I guess lol). In Volcano there are 2 gas stations and general stores one of which is open at 5 AM also an art gallery and a gift/souvenir store and dont miss the sunday market in Volcano it is nice to see the local wares and produce. If you like glass wares Fahrenheit 2400 is just down the highway and has some nice pieces, they also have glass blowing exhibitions on certain days. I would recommend this property to anyone we will definitely stay there again if we visit, it is a home away from home in your own little private part of paradise, if you plan to visit Volcano and area this is the place to stay.

We stayed at Hale Hubner for a full week and felt we were in a private getaway. We love rain forests and Hale Hubner exceeded all our hopes for a wonderful rain forest stay. In the mornings many wonderful bird songs filled our ears. We were looking for accessibility to Volcano National Park and it turned out to be surprisingly close by. This made it easy to visit glowing night time viewing sites to check on the crater's activity or visit the park multiple times since the $10 pass is good for one week. The owner had great tips and ideas for activities such as the Sunday early morning Farmer's Market in Volcano Village. What fun to taste authentic Hawai'ian food and excellent Kau coffees and talk to the locals. From this location we thoroughly explored the eastern side of the island from the north to the south on day trips and each night drove back to Volcano Village for the refreshing temperatures that 4,000 ft elevation has to offer. We appreciated the comfortable bed, refreshing temperatures and being able to sleep with all the windows open and all the covers on. The kitchen had all we needed-we prepared many meals there, the WiFi service was fast and there was a binder with great information about the property and what to do. As this was our first visit to Hawai'i, we were very pleased with how well Hale Hubner met our needs. The pictures in the listing show the lush vegetation that we could see out the amazing picture windows. The property was clean, inviting and well kept. The owner was very prompt answering questions and informative. I would recommend this property to my family and friends.

We started our Big Island vacation at this gorgeous, cozy cottage. The patio is as scenic and peaceful as the photos depict. It is a perfect location for exploring Volcano National Park. It's also an easy day trip to Hilo and the Southeast Puna area. Don't miss Kapoho Tide Pools if you like to snorkel.
