Punaluu beach is Hawaii's most famous black sand beach, the color derived from crushed lava rock. Relatively rough ocean conditions, colder water, and bus loads of tourists make this beach more of novelty item for the sand connoisseur. But its a nice stop along the drive from the east to west coast of the Big Island and a great place to spot turtles live in the bay..
