Our property has been a vacation rental house for 16 years.
At night the ocean sound is your lullaby to get you to sweet dreams. Kehena Makai is beautifully furnished in classic Hawaiiana style rattan. The two bedrooms both have wide oceanfront view and its own bathroom with shower. Suitable for family or two adult couples to have an low key, relaxing Hawaiian vacation. The woven bamboo ceiling and local Hawaiian art work add to the authentic ambiance.
The house is built in the traditional sugar cane style and yet newly constructed in 2001 and finished in 2007. This is a classic Hawaiian home in upscale materials and design. As you open the entry door, you see a 16' glass sliding door between you and the ocean. The kitchen, dining and seating "great room" is 17' wide with 16' high ceiling. All the furniture is rattan, the sectional, dining set and barstools with brand new Sunbrella cushions. The decor is Hawaiiana right down to the surfboards and traditional local crafts. There is a desk, TV with Wifi and a large collections of books about Hawaii culture and history. The floors through out the house are porcelain tile. The kitchen counters are rain forest marble tiles. Light fixtures are retro-tropical to complete the look.
On either side of the great room are master bedrooms with showers that have ocean views. The bedrooms face the ocean and have 6' windows. Even the windows on the sides of the bedrooms have ocean views. You will appreciate the views and the windows that all open for the sea breeze. The showers in each bathroom are quite large and feature unique local touches.
The sliding doors in the great room open onto a 35' lanai perched 40' above sea level. It is 53' to the water from the lanai. There are very few places anywhere in Hawaii this close to the waters edge. The lanai has a Made in USA dining set and 2 swivel rockers, lounge chairs and ottomans.
The lanai at the front of the house has an American made patio dining set. This lanai is private and offers full sun. Dining here can be out of the trade winds and away from the porch lights.
There is a carport and covered entry stairs in the old Hilo style as it does rain at night especially. Locals fish off the pali below the house and opihi pickers test their luck at low tides. There is no ocean access below the house due to the rough waves most of the times. And remember to never turn your back on the ocean like the Hawaiians always say, rogue waves do appear. Never let your children be downstairs at the ocean front unattended.
The laundry room is downstairs, accessed from outside the house. Besides washer and dryer there are some ice chests and beach chairs. Beach towels are in the closet in the right hand side bedroom. There's a cooler and handy bags in the laundry room and the closet upstairs, there maybe snorkel gear, reef slippers and beach toys but sometimes they get misplaced. The yard is landscaped with orchids, heliconia, ginger and monstera. There is an ocean side outdoor shower under the lanai.
Please note that we do not take same day check in and check out. If the day has a guest leaving please do not book it.

20 day stay on the islands, this was our favorite place to stay at. Its kinda far from everything but oh, man you can't beat the views or the sound of the waves at night as you sleep. 10/10. Also, really liked the decor. Just a note though this is not wheelchair accessible nor is it accessible for anyone with severe physical disabilities. You have to go up 2 sets of stairs. Edit: just finished our vacation 20 nights, 3 islands and hands down our favorite property. Absolutely the winner of our trip. We had some genuinely amazing vrbos on this trip but being that close to the ocean, with those windows and that perfect porch just can't be beat.

The house is conveniently located very close to the black sand beach. If you want to spend time in this area in a secluded setting this place is definitely a good choice with the sound of the ocean. The house is comfortable but the dining area and the living room lighting could use an update. Also not sure if the housekeeper is washing the floor between each guest since we had coffee stain on the patio and the floor also had hair in some places, looked like they dont vacuum too often. Beds were clean and comfy. Master bath shower floor looked like needed some bleach and sinks need cleaning since they slow to drain. I would have gladly communicated this with the hosts and tell them privately but they have not answered to any of my messages so I had no chance talking to them.

We had a wonderful and peaceful stay at this property. The instructions were clear and we were able to easily control the fan/lights/laundry. The view was beautiful and we realized after a few days that we hadn’t seen one boat or airplane go by, just spinner dolphins! We enjoyed exploring nearby and meeting some of the locals, including the neighborhood cat. We loved this quiet part of the island and would absolutely return to stay here!

My husband and I stayed at this beautiful Hawaiian themed home on the ocean for 2 weeks. The views are amazing!!! It was very peaceful and the neighbors were very quiet. The owners thought of everything to make our stay as comfortable as possible. There were many unexpected amenities-Night lights/Emergency lights throughout the house, shampoo, conditioner, laundry soap and paper products, and more. The kitchen is supplied with high quality equipment also. Everything you need if you want to cook meals. The owners are great with communication. Whether before our stay, or during it, Susanna always got back to me promptly. If you are looking for a place to stay in this area of the island, definitely consider staying here. You won't be disappointed!!.

Beautiful property as described. The ocean sounds were magical, and very easy to get to the black sand beach at Kehena! This is the real Hawai'i for sure.

Sitting listening to the ocean waves is very relaxing. The sun doesn't shine directly on the deck, which I truly enjoyed. I did want the chairs to fully recline. The Lava Flats are close by and worth a visit. The black sand beach has no easy access route that we were able to find. My next trip to the Big Island, I will look for this rental. I did find the key box a little difficult to open and the laundry room instructions takes you to the wrong side of the house.

The house was very nice and well equipped. The picture of the view on the listing doesn’t do it justice, truly breathtaking.

This property is fantastic! Beautiful and clean! So comfortable! The kitchen is well equipped and had everything we needed. The bedrooms were perfect. But, we could not get over the amazing location. Stars! Whales! Rainbows! Waves! We did our grocery shopping on our way since this home is tucked away. Additionally, screenshot the entry code in case it’s dark when you arrive because cell service might not be available. I hope we’ll be able to return in the near future.
