House is located right next to a popular lookout point. People would either drive up or walk to the edge and sometimes stay for hours. Never was a bother to us. Nice neighborhood, easy to find.

We really enjoyed staying at this oceanfront home. We were greeted by Thom on the first day and he was very helpful not only with giving us a tour of the home, but giving us insight into the local things to do and places to eat. The view from the home was incredible. Only home in that area along the ocean where we were able to watch sea turtles down below from the open deck on the top floor. I highly recommend this home if you’re looking for a great view, beautiful home and seclusion.

The location was truly spectacular with the ocean right below the property. The lanai on the top floor was perfect for sunbathing and enjoying the waves. The neighborhood was quiet with just the morning dogs reacting to each other-just as we are used to at home. Thom, the caretaker, was very helpful and the market he recommended in Pahoa was great.

The view at this property is worth it all. The crashing waves, the whale sightings, and the stars at night that filled the sky beyond what you can imagine. Simply beautiful!!! There is nothing better than that first cup of coffee in the morning watching the sun rise. We got to do that most every morning (with the exception of when it rained). The house itself has a few maintenance issues that come from the wear and tear of being so close to the ocean and in direct line of the salty sprays from the waves crashing onto the beautiful rocks. The owners graciously received our feedback and plan to address those areas of concern. The property manager was incredibly helpful and met us at the house when we arrived, giving us a tour of the home. In the final days of our visit, Mother Nature presented the island with a major winter storm and our power was out for nearly 34 hours. Thom brought candles and flashlights to help us endure the dark nights and we considered this time an adventure. We thoroughly enjoyed our stay in this home and are grateful for the support our hosts/Thom provided both before, during and after the storm. Thank you for sharing your home with us.

If you just love to watch the waves for hours on end, you can stop looking and pick this house! We particularly loved the comfortable living room furniture which made it perfect to watch the waves crash on the rocks, and look for turtles! Very serene.

Amazing land scape very close to ocean so I could here the crashing of the waves as soon as I woke up and the view at sun rise/set top notch can’t wait to come back soon.

The moment you pull into the garage you are greeted by Thom. Thom is a gem and provides so many interesting stories and a great list of suggestions of things to see.
The main floor of the home has you surrounded by windows to look out at the amazing views. The kitchen was well stocked and the main area is very comfortable.
The 4th floor deck is amazing and you get great views of the water and the turtles. There are lots of mosquitoes, so make sure you are wearing repellent.
The 2nd floor has your three bedrooms. The rooms are a bit moldy/musty smelling. This really was the only negative I had with this home. I did go out and buy fabreeze, so having the fans all on and spraying Farnese did help with the smell.

Communication with property manager was easy. He was very helpful. Beautiful view from the house. My family of 5 were mainly there to sleep and eat breakfast. We were able to leave windows/doors open at night, as long as they had screens, not all windows had screens to enjoy the crashing of the waves. Another reason to leave the windows/sliding doors open with fans going was that the house can get pretty steamy due to no air conditioning. There are random people that drive up next to the house to take in the views. Nice place with beautiful views though.

It’s an amazing location with stunning views! It is a very well appointed and very well decorated and spacious home. However, there are some major shortcomings. The basic maintenance is lacking. The doors and windows do not function well. There is no air conditioning which leads to a number of issues. The windows must be open in order to maintain, a comfortable temperature. However, a number of doors and windows must be closed overnight as there is a rodent issue and a number of the screens are either torn or have holes chewed in them. The draperies, linens and carpet all smell very musty and with no air conditioning this is a real problem. There is a very neat system for spraying freshwater on the outside of the windows to keep salt spray off! However, the water is very hard and has left a hard water film on the outside of the windows obstructing a clear view. There was also a sizable leak in the roof which left a puddle of water on the floor beside the kitchen every time it rained. This property has everything needed to be absolutely stunning. It just needs some real TLC and a lot of maintenance.

February 2024
The house is in a breathtaking location! It hangs literally over the ocean. We were there 5 mins and saw whales swimming by! You can hear the ocean waves crashing below as you go to sleep. The stars in the night sky from the top deck are incredible. Thom the caretaker was super helpful by orienting us to the property and giving us suggestions for things to do/see. The only drawback is that we saw evidence of rodents on the property. The location of the house probably makes it difficult to deal with those kinds of things? My family thoroughly enjoyed our stay.

September 2023
No air-conditioning coupled with very few windows and blinds that actually worked made for a very hot visit.
Bathrooms are not clearly represented in the Vrbo ad, all the bedrooms are on one floor and two of them share a bathroom, which made it awkward for four adults sharing a bathroom.
One of the full baths was actually in the garage and was blocked by a lawnmower and numerous cleaning supplies and was not a reasonable option.
Windows had saltwater film on them which made the view obscured, but it was fantastic.
Thom was a great representative and we were grateful for him.

August 2023
We absolutely enjoyed our stay in this property. The southeast Big Island is relatively sparsely populated with pristine coasts and beaches. This properly, sitting near past lava flows, is in the area that draws us close to the original scenery and local lives. The view from every level of the property worths millions, and we feel like riding the waves all the time. House is well equipped for all our needs. Thom was great, giving us a very detailed orientation and marvelous recommendations to various local spots and events and a lot of history. Hilo is about 35 minutes away. Easy access to great restaurants, markets, national parks, and whatever you may miss from the civilization, while feel like being well blended in a local Hawaiian life. We hope to visit back soon.

The rooftop lanai is every bit as lovely as the pictures. The perfect place to sit, listen to the waves crash, do yoga. Perfect place to watch the sun rise with your coffee.
The property manager personally greeted us when we arrived and was a wealth of information on the sites to see in the area. We took several of his suggestions and they did not disappoint.
It was restful.

I will probably dream about this house forever. You cannot beat the outdoor areas. I have never had a host like Thom. We checked in at midnight and he was gracious and helpful.
Waking and falling asleep to the sounds of the ocean, was so relaxing.
The kitchen was well stocked. The house was clean. Loved the art and the whole vibe.

July 2023
The location is fantastic and the space was well laid out. The kitchen had everything we could have hoped for. However, a few updates are needed to truly qualify the property as luxury. First, the dishwasher does not work reliably. Most times the soap dispenser would not open and it would leak water onto the floor. Since the broken dishwasher was listed as a concern back in a previous review I am assuming it just was never fixed properly. It is time for a new unit for true cleanliness. Second, a very large section of the shower floor tile is missing in the master bathroom. Plastic mats were placed over the missing tile but that did not fix the unevenness of the floor nor the mildew smell coming from the water seeping under the missing tiles. This is both a safety and health concern. My parents are in their seventies and an uneven, wet shower floor could have spelled disaster. Lastly, the window coverings need replacing. The primary bedroom screen door was completely loose at the bottom and wasn’t going to keep any insect or lizard out of the house. The second bedroom with the double bed had missing vertical blinds and filthy windows. The third bedroom with the twin beds had filthy blinds. Many windows are missing screens which makes it hard to get airflow in a house without AC when all the windows are not able to be opened. Overall we had a good time in the rental. We just wish some of the problems we had did not happen to us.

June 2023
This place is great. Being from the Southeast, I was a little concerned about no AC. We slept to the sound of breaking waves every night and were very comfortable. I was a little concerned about the park next door, but it wasn't an issue at all. It's a quiet neighborhood with nice people.
The house is very open and confortable. It's absolutely beautiful from every floor, and there are a few. All the stairs didn't bother us because we aren't 100. We stayed in 4 places on our trip to the islands over 2 weeks, and we liked this one the best. It's a lot of house for a reasonable price.

Our family of 6 stayed here for a week and had a great time! My husband and kids had a great time in the rocks below. It's within 30 minutes of Safeway, Walmart and Target as well as fairly close to Volcano National Park. We would definitely stay here again. Thom was a great host with lots of information.

This property really delivers amazing views! Crashing waves, turtles playing, & the ever changing colors of the water. Thom, the caretaker, met us promptly to show us around the property & was a fountain of information about what to do in the area. He answered our texts promptly when we had questions or concerns. We were a bit disappointed in a few things. On checking in we were told the dishwasher had not been working & still was not. We had not planned on spending the week washing & drying dishes for 4 people. The upstairs toilet made a squealing noise every time flushed which necessitated lifting the lid off the tank to stop. The fan in the master bedroom only worked on slow. Some of the outdoor furniture was in disrepair, the pillows & the slip covers on the living room furniture are in dire need of cleaning. Last but not least, beeping noises! The backup battery for the garage door opener was apparently faulty & beeped constantly. There was also constant beeping coming from somewhere within the house - possibly a faulty alarm system. What made it worse was one panel the noise was coming from was right beside the master bed. Thom had indicated that no one had figured out what was causing the noise & we could just "hit it with a hammer" (ok gotta give Thom credit - that was funny!). I only mention all this because I feel that with the price being charged per night for this property, things should work properly & be clean. The views were amazing, and Thom is the best!

The views are spectacular! The communication was great and Tom was AMAZING. He was a valuable treasure trove of information. He referred us to some great places. The house is nicely furnished and kitchen well stocked if you want to cook. There is a small park that is next to the house that had frequent visitors, so you can watch the dolphins, sea turtles or people watch.

This would be our 3rd or 4th time that we have stayed at this home. We enjoy it very much just setting and looking at the ocean, doesn’t matter if ‘s rain or sunshine. The house is nice and has all the comforts of home. The home is in an quiet neighborhood amongst the locals.

We spent 10 glorious days at Hale Vu, and loved every minute. The view is indescribable really! Imagine watching beautiful waves, crashing onto the rocks below, through floor to ceiling windows - INCREDIBLE!
The kitchen is well-appointed for cooking meals in - which we did most of the time. Comfy bed, and good water pressure in shower.

We coudn't have asked for a better view than the one we had from this house! Watching the aquamarine waves crash against the lava shoreline was absolutely mesmerizing. We spent an entire afternoon watching whales from the home's rooftop terrace and two decks.
The house itself was large, clean, and very well stocked.Thom, the caretaker, met us at the house upon our arrival and spent an hour with us, explaining things about the house, as well as offering information about the island. He was so very helpful and we really appreciated the warm welcome he gave us.
We would definitely stay at this property again and would recommend it to anyone looking for a rental on the Big Island!!

February 2023
Upon seeing the pictures online I was in love with this property. My only concern was it being in the rainy side of the island. However upon arrival Thom filled us with tons of information and let us know most of the time it rains late at night and early morning. This held true the majority of our trip. Our family consist of my wife and I and our 3 children between 11-19. There was more than enough room for everyone we all absolutely loved this house. We did get to see one whale some dolphins and on clear nights amazing stars on the roof. Everyone's favorite though was watching the huge waves crash upon the rocks. We stayed for one week and traveled to each coast of the island. There was amazing views everywhere from Wapio valley in the north to the beautiful Hapuna beach in the west and seeing so many sea turtles on the black sand beaches in the south. Day after day of traveling we all felt the same way. That the best most beautiful place on the island was right in our backyard at this beautiful home. So if you're dead set on Sandy beaches and enjoying sunsets then you can find a place on the Kona side but if you want sunrise and a view that is ever changing with the waves that I believe you could never get enough of this is the place for you. Also the decorations in this house are just amazing I feel like everyday we noticed a new piece of art. All that said this was definitely the right choice for us to make a truly memorable family vacation.

Our property manager Thom was wonderful. He was very informative and helpful, we always felt that any questions or problems he could easily help us solve if they ever came up. Happily we had a fun, comfortable stay. Our stay was for three weeks and our adult family of 6 kept very busy and entertained. Our favorite was the living room balcony and the upstairs rooftop views. We managed to whale watch and the views are absolutely breathtaking. The kitchen, living room and master bedroom were tastefully decorated and very comfortable. The only negatives, that keep me from awarding this lovely place five stars, were the two smaller bedrooms, the long walks up and down the stairs and the windows that diminish the magnificent views in the living area. The windows come equipped with a water cleaning system, but years of salt water have clouded them. A quick walk out to the porch helps restore the beautiful view and the lovely sunsets and sunrise. All in all we had a wonderful vacation and our stay memorable.

Beautiful home with awesome view of ocean. Good location to stay on east side of the island. Close to small town of Pahoa and close enough to volcano park and Hilo for day trips. We loved to sounds of the waves at night.

March 2020
What an amazing place. The other reviews that talk about the spectacular views are spot on. You will not find a better view in Hawaii. It was so awesome to have unobstructed views from the house on every floor. One of our favorite things to do was watch the sea turtles which we could see every day almost all day. The home owner and the house host could not have been more pleasant to work with. The host and owner were both very generous with helping us in a very difficult situation. They were both readily available if and when we had any questions. The maps and the help that was provided when we arrived was amazing and made finding things so much easier. The kitchen and the bathrooms were stocked with everything you will need. We loved our time in Pāhoa and can’t wait to come back.

What a location!! This house is so beautiful, but it’s the location and the lanais that make it so incredible. Watching the vibrant blue waves crash against the lava rocks was one of the highlights of our trip....to make it even better, we saw whales and turtles from the rooftop lanai! The neighborhood is great (there is a park next door that people are constantly at...when you see those views you will understand why). The house is fully stocked and very comfortable. The house manager and owner were both WONDERFUL! I would absolutely stay here again and recommend it to anyone!

The property is exactly as pictured in the listing. Easy to get to from Hilo airport. Our family of four including two teenagers had a relaxing visit. Fabulous day trips are easy to get to: Volcanoes National Park, Waterfalls, even the Mauna Kea Visitor Center is open again. If we come back to the Big Island we'd definitely stay here again.

This was our second time to stay in the home. What a treat. We could sit and watch the waves for hours. Home is close to the recent lava flow and gives you great opportunities to hike and explore. Look forward to staying again.

January 2020
What a view!! It was so nice to wake up, get a cup of coffee, the camera and then sit on the lanai and watch the sun rises. The house is located conveniently to Hilo, Volcano National Park, Lava Tree State Park, and Akaka Falls.
The house easily accommodated the six of us. The kitchen, dining room, and livingroom level is an awesome room! The house lacks nothing. All appliances are up to date, the furniture is very comfortable and again easily accommodated all six of us. The bedrooms were of good size and located on a separate floor from the entertainment area, so for those of us that wake up before the sun there were no worries of disturbing others. We actually based which island to visit based on this house and were not disappointed.
The owner Chau and Melissa the caretaker were very helpful and quick to respond to any questions that we had. They sent us a list of local things to do and places to go prior to our departing for vacation. If we decide to visit the Big Island again this will be on our list of places to stay.

This unique house is in one of the most interesting homes I've ever been in. Sitting atop lava that cannot be older than 400 years, with the ocean crashing ashore at the building base is unlike anyplace else. The views are stunning. Oh, and its part of a lush tropical jungle that is just as amazing as the shoreline. Inside is everything we could possibly need, plus beautiful art and furnishings. We loved Pahoa and Hilo too. We had a great stay and hope to come back someday. Mahalo!

What a lovely home with breathtaking views! Renting this home was a great choice. I had regular contact with the owner Chau, a wonderful person full of helpful island information to make our stay even more wonderful. August 2017
The home was beautiful and the photos are accurate. What you don't realize until you get there is there are a TON of knick-nacks on every surface. If you have kids, don't expect to get your deposit back because something will break.
We had an awful time with the heat in the house. Only about half of the windows have screens and we were warned about the massive amount of bugs that are attracted by the lights, so it was extremely hot in the entire house. The ceiling fan in the Master bedroom did not work so we were sweating and uncomfortable every night. The beautiful top deck could not be used often due to the massive amount of bugs. We sprayed down all decks every day and purchased bug repellent for the areas, but it didn't help much. The 2nd bedroom has windows facing the road and you hear cars most nights coming/leaving the park next door (most of the nights between midnight and 3am). The noise was heard with closed windows (because there were not any screens on the 2nd bedroom windows).
The local rep for the house was not available the first day due to her phone issues, but the local restaurants were extremely helpful. We expressed our screen, fan and bug concerns with her but didn't get assistance. The owner contacted us during our stay, but could not do much since they were not local.
Overall, if you are not used to heat and humidity 24/7 or if you have kids, I do not recommend this house.

June 2017
This house sits on an amazing property. The views are breathtaking. Like most people have mentioned...the owners of the house are hands down some of the best people to work with when renting a vacation home. They reach out several times to make sure that your stay is going well. The house...the elevator is very helpful as there are 4 levels to the home. We used the stairs except for moving days. 2nd floor has three bedrooms. The master bedroom is spectacular. The bed is very comfortable and the views are amazing! If you like falling asleep to the sound of the ocean...it doesn't get much better than this...if only it was just the ocean sound though...as with any tropical location...there was some creature...frog or something...that was pretty loud that you had to get used to. The other master bedroom was pretty standard and the third bedroom had bunk beds which was great for our kids. Sleeping at night became a little hard at first due to being kind of hot as there is no air conditioning. If it's not raining...you can have the windows that have screens open for air helped...we utilized as many fans as possible and that helped as well... but if you are used to air conditioning and like the room cool...this may not be the place for you. Most homes in hawaii don't have air conditioning so that is pretty normal. We just forgot about that. The main living floor is awesome! Kitchen has everything you could possible want. Big TV (although it would be nice to have a better Dish TV package). If you are a sports fan and are expecting to watch ESPN or something similar...it's a very basic plan. You are in Hawaii though...we tried to watch little TV anyway....but I missed the Golf channel as the US Open was going on...4th floor was perfect...we had a dinner up there on night as a family...would be nice to have a dining table up there for meals...but we utilized the small tables and made our own space to have dinner up there. Spectacular views for sure. The town that was 10 minutes away had a very interesting feel. You really felt like you were in a foreign country and over time...grew to love it. Restaurants were very good. Would not want to stay in Hilo...this area gave you the Hawaiian feel and some element of getting away from it all. Highly recommend this place!

June 2017
We called the road leading up to the house "the road to paradise". Let me start out by saying that my wife and I have 50+ years combined in the hotel and airline industry and we are very critical when it comes to travel and accommodations. From the day we booked the property we've had excellent service and even after we left, the owner is still checking in on us. The house exceeds the expectations we had after reviewing the comments and pictures online. We loved the privacy gate and 2 car garage. All 3 bedrooms are on the 2nd floor and they were beautiful. We loved the massage bed in the master bedroom and fell asleep to the sound of the crashing waves. The bathrooms are beautiful and the house was very clean. The laundry room is also on the 2nd floor and we used it a number of times. The 3rd floor was our favorite. The kitchen and family room were decorated beautifully and it was a very cozy spot for our family. The kitchen had every single item we needed. We bought fresh flowers and used the vases from the house to bring the outside in. The cabinets are filled with spices, olive oil, flour, etc. The dining room was perfect for breakfast and dinner and brought us together as a family. The sofa was my favorite. The majority of rentals in Hawaii have the typical wicker furniture with stuffed pillows to sit on. The sectional sofa allowed our family to sit together in comfort while we told stories, talked about our day and relaxed in the evening. The balcony on the 3rd floor was our favorite and is where we spent a lot of time. The vies are amazing. We watched the sea turtles play, sky change every 10 seconds, sun rise, Saturn move across the sky and listen to the waves. The 3rd floor also has an office where my 78 year old dad set up shop. He kept his breathing machine, phone charger, Bible and meditation books here and started his morning off in peace. He would not have been able to stay in most houses because of the stairs but because this house has an elevator - he could do everything we were doing. The elevator is amazing!!! The 4th floor is a treat. 360 degree stunning view! We brought the BBQ grill up from the garage and cooked on the sundeck. We had our own family luau there 3 nights. It's as beautiful at night as it is during the day. We are so thankful for the time we spent here and we will be back! I don't believe there is a better rental property on this island. Please feel free to contact me if you have any questions. Mahalo!

We loved staying in this house! It's in a great spot next to a tiny state park, and we are surrounded by fragrant green plants, and stunning black cliffs with churning white surf, turquoise waters and dozens, and dozens of turtles! They play in the surf day and night! We enjoyed watching the fishermen on the cliffs, and the spectacular sunrises. We loved our nights on the roof watching stars, and drinking great coffee and reading on the two balconies. The garage, sleeping level, kitchen/living area, and spectacular open roof-top are all on different levels. It gave us a lot of privacy. This place is huge! There is an elevator that goes between floors if you don't take the stairs (personally, I loved the stairs!). The furnishing are beautiful, comfortable and well placed. The kitchen is extremely well-equipped for a group like ours that loves to cook. Pahoa is about 10 minutes away with great restaurants and grocery, and the tide pools are about 20 minutes away. It's in a great spot. We absolutely loved our stay here!!! Chau communicated with us directly to welcome us, and Melissa was so kind and welcoming and gave us some great local tips! Mahalo for everything! This is a very cool, unique house in a great spot!

April 2017
Amazing property & we can still hear the soothing ocean waves crashing on the rocks below! Our initial plan was to attend the Merrie Monarch to see our nephews perform. But, after arriving at the house, we were all so mesmerized by the beauty of the home and the ocean views, that we chose to bypass the first night of Merrie Monarch and watched it on TV instead. The fully loaded gourmet kitchen was like a playground for my Chef husband, who found every kitchen equipment he needed to create awesome dinners. The elevator came in handy when transporting our luggage to the second floor and groceries to the third floor. What also impressed us was the ease of booking the reservations, the immediate responses and follow up calls we received by the owners to ensure we had directions to the house and to address any questions we had. Lastly, having the owners’ representative greet us at the house with a warm Aloha and conduct a house orientation added that special touch that made our stay very special and memorable. Only wished we had more time to stay longer. Mahalo to all until our next visit!

We stayed in this amazing home at the edge of the water for three days and it wasn't nearly long enough! Everything you read about how well appointed, clean, tastefully decorated and well maintained this home is, is true! It really is an extraordinary property beautifully situated next to a grassy park at the water's edge. The waves crash on the rocks directly below and there are three lovely spots to take this in without even leaving the house and a relatively easy and safe place to hike out onto the lava rocks on either side. You might not want to leave the house, but when you do you will find the small town of Pahoa to be charming, with restaurants and stores, but no cheesy tourist vibe. Travel through the lush rainforest down the mostly-paved government beach access road to a number of beautiful local beach parks, including the "warm pond" and a black sand beach. This is truly a magical destination. After just three days here, I had a very difficult time adjusting to the Kona side of the island with the crowds and commotion. Wish we had stayed all six days here! I will certainly be coming back!

We're all really happy with the house. We did half our trip at a resort and half here at the house. Given how much all the resort fees are over at the Hilton when you get the final bill, this was less expensive yet here we get the most amazing view I've ever seen from a beautiful home where kids get their own bedrooms. Since there is a park to one side and a clear lot on the other, all you see is ocean and cliffs when looking out from the three levels of balconies. You get a full tour of the home when you arrive (you'll need it, it is a big home) and the kitchen is well stocked with spices and condiments and all kind of appliances for cooking. A great place if you like to cook family meals when travelling. Very clean, updated, and a great value. Highly recommend the Kapoho Tide Pools that are about 20 minutes away. Was the best snorkeling I've done on the island and great for kids too.
