Nice property with partial view. We attended conference at Hyatt nearby and it was short walk away. Free parking . close walk to beach at hyatt or other beaches. close to restaurants and stores. 10 minute drive to grocery store. went to farmer's market one day. Helpful communication prior to arriving. wifi service was slow. Older property with two levels. kitchen was fairly well stocked. better air conditioning downstairs would be helpful. portable air conditioners in two bedrooms upstairs. Has some issues with things already broken when we arrived (bathroom door/trash compactor / soap dispenser /flooring slightly splintered). lockbox was problematic to close again when we left. we had to leave message with manager. overall nice stay and kind manager who responded when we called. We appreciated the thought that there were boogie boards/beach towels/snorkel gear available should we have wanted to use it. Also helpful to have washer/dryer on property . Thank you!

I really enjoyed this condo with my family, specially the ocean view. We found everything like the post description. It had two portable A/C units, one in each bedroom ceiling fans in the living room and bedrooms, and two portable fans. The apartment manager was very responsive and welcoming. There is plenty of beach gear including chairs, 2 umbrellas, goggles, tennis rackets, and plenty of house supplies.

The VRBO description is deceptive. “Air Conditioning” is listed three times in amenities. Only once is the accurate description of “portable AC units in bedrooms only.” The living room, kitchen, dining area, hallways, stairway and bathrooms ARE NOT air conditioned. We left after one night.

Ocean views are fantastic. Unit has a good location within the property but know that there are many many flights of stairs so bringing in groceries and luggage requires some work. We really enjoyed the pool and hot tub. House had all the beach chairs and coolers you could use. It was very hot during our stay and the bedroom AC was essential. There is no AC unit in the main living area. There is a portable swamp cooler but we did not attempt to set it up.

Comfortable, spacious condo with a lovely view that we enjoyed every morning and evening from the deck. Beds were comfortable, beach chairs and cooler were so helpful, and tennis court was a bonus! Pool is beautiful and was often busy, but most people were thoughtful about following the pool's usage hours. So grateful for the lovely welcome gifts when we arrived! We purchased few basics for the condo (salt, plastic wrap, extra dishwasher tablets) which were easy to find at local shops. Sophia was so kind accommodating, and just wonderful to work with!

The spot was perfect for beach and food spots. We had family close by and could walk to their house. The host even was able to book us another night unexpectedly and allowed us to extend our check out time since we had a sick kid.

For the first time in all my years of booking with VRBO, I am giving a poor rating. Our condo (#2308) at Makahuena as well as the property in general is in disrepair. The window and door frames are rotting, the lanai's are being supported by blocks of wood screwed in to the lanai lanai frame and the entire condo smelled of strong mildew - I assume due to the carpet that runs up the stairs and into the bedrooms as well as a closet just inside the door that was jammed with beach equipment. Additionally, the closets in the bedrooms were stuffed with cushions to the extent that we were unable to open/clost the closet doors and the A/C units in the bedrooms sound like freight trains. Perhaps the one redeeming quality was the pool. Nothing fancy, but was in good shape and we used it several times. I would never stay here again or recommend this property to anyone.

The place is decent, but it’s really showing wear and tear. All the mattresses are terrible. It’s pretty obvious that the owner doesn’t actually use this and is just an investment. The management is good and responsive. It was clean as it could be, but rust and worn cabinets, windows and doors make it feel less so. Air conditioning is only upstairs. It can get very warm downstairs even with a good cross breeze, but you have to leave the front door open, so I wouldn’t want to sleep down stairs with only a screen door. The AC units in each bedroom are very loud, but they do cool it off. We didn’t sleep well the whole time due to the mattresses and loud AC, which is frustrating for a 10 night vacation. The location is great and the complex is quite, well managed and well kept, but also showing its age. We would stay in the area again, but not at this unit.

My family went for my youngest sons wedding. The condo had everything we needed to cook meals. I thought the stairs were going to be a problem because I have bad knees but it was just fine. Says three flights of stairs but it really isn’t. I loved the view from the condo could see the sunset Eve very night. Not far from the beaches you could walk down the sidewalk from the pool and you could watch the sunrise. Just beautiful!!! I will definitely stay here again!!! Very easy check in and check out. Very quiet place! Loved our stay!!!

The condo was clean and very comfortable. Perfectly located with 5-10 minutes of a good variety of restaurants and shopping. Do yourself a favor and eat at the Beach House, Keoki’s and Thai Bistro Kōloa at least once during your stay. If mobility with stairs is an issue, there are a boatload of them on the property so just a heads up.

We had a wonderful week in Kauai, at this beautiful oceanfront condo! It was walking distance to Shipwreck beach, and Poipu Beach. Both beaches were beautiful and had great surf and boogie boarding waves for my adult kids. We would go back and stay here again in a heartbeat!

Place was nicely upgraded, clean, and had numerous beach amenities for our stay. The ocean view was absolutely gorgeous, and the outside deck was the perfect place to eat breakfast every morning with the family. Pool was pretty open and kid approved. Poipu is a wonderful place on the island to stay as it is easy to get in and out of.

We had a wonderful stay with our teenage grandchildren in this condo. Having a washer and dryer was a real asset. There were plenty of towels for all the beach time. It was well equipped with all kitchen essentials. The location was great. The view of the ocean was beautiful from the condo. It was very clean.
There is no elevator, so be prepared to climb stairs to get to the upper floor front door and inside to the bedrooms.

The place was terrific. Very spacious and well-equipped. Close to both Poipu and Shipwreck beaches. Wonderful walking along the coast. A bit of food desert in the immediate vicinity. Be aware that not well suited for mobility impaired, as there are many stairs throughout the property and this unit is two stories. Great time overall

Lovely spot and Evelyn was very responsive. The view was good, but I was expecting maybe a little more ocean than we actually had. Just the bottom part of the view was blocked by a shorter building. Plenty of space for 4 adults.

We really enjoyed staying at the Makahuena. This condo is on the top floor so we had a lovely view of the ocean and sunset skies. The pool is beautiful and surrounded by gardens and palm trees. It was a delightful stay.

The size of the VRBO was great for the four of us. When we got there the place smelled and felt like it had been closed up for a while. It’s humid and warm there. There is a closet by the front door with water toys which is nice to have but it smelled like the toys had been put away wet and we’re very smelly. After airing the place out and cooling it down, we enjoyed the stay. There is plenty to do in that area. Property management is just a phone call away and are very pleasant and helpful. We had a good time.

We LOVED our time at the Makeuena. The property has wonderful views, well maintained gardens, clean pool area and the property on the whole is very quiet. the building is a bit dated ( looks like lots of updates happening all around) however it gives a comfortable family feel and did NOT disappoint. We met families that have been coming for years. We will definatly be back!

Property owner was very responsive for anything we needed or any questions we had.
Check-in and check-out process was simple and convenient. Location of the apartment was great - near the main highway so easy to get to different parts of the island. Near two beaches - Shipwreck and Poipu which is great for beach days (condo comes with a lot of beach/snorkel supplies).
Everything was clean. Unit was spacious (living room, kitchen, patio, bathroom with washer/dryer on first floor; 2 bedrooms/2 bath on second). Air conditioning and fans are set-up on every floor because it can get very hot if not. Property has access to pool, hot tub, grills and tennis court which is an added bonus. Also has free parking.
Property is within a community and because everything on the island closes early, was very quiet at night. If you go outside you can see the Milky Way galaxy and most likely some shooting stars if you stare long enough due to the lack of artificial light on the island.
Would stay here again - enjoyed my stay and this property a lot.

LISTING SAID AIR CONDITIONING. WE ARRIVED TO ON OLD TWO STORY CONDO, IT WAS 90 DEGREES INSIDE. WE LOOKED FOR THE AC CONTROLS, NONE FOUND. JUST FANS. WE COULD NOT SLEEP THAT NIGHT.
CALLED MANAGER THE NEXT MORNING AT 7:00 AM SND TOLD HER WE ARE LEAVING AS THE CONDO IS UNLIVABLE. SHE HASSLED ME ALL DAY BY EMAIL TELLING ME TO GO THROUGH THE VRBO WEBSITE TO CANCEL. VRBO WEBSITE WOULD NOT ALLOW ME TO CANCEL. WILL NEVER ISE VRBO AGAIN. PURSUING REFUND THROUGH AMEX NOW.

Location of the unit right on the ocean was really nice. The property management employees were extremely nice and professional and made the process simple and smooth. The unit does seem to show its age a bit with a bit of a musty smell which is probably because the unit only has portable AC units in the two bedrooms. The unit has made some upgrades to the countertops and appliances but could use some more updating. Front door handle is very loose which should be looked at, the showers could be refreshed and the unit could use a fresh paint job - a lot of wear and tear can be seen on areas like the trim. Having said that we did enjoy our stay but would definitely say the pictures made it look better than it was.

Nice property with a beautiful view. Kitchen was well stocked and sleeping beds were comfortable. Overall, was a very pleasant stay. Only issues were front door lock needs to be looked at -needs some work. Snorkeling gear was not cleaned and some of them did not work. Needs replacement.

The condo was very clean when we arrived and the communication for check in came early and easy to follow. The condo is well stocked with everything you need in the kitchen, baths and bedrooms. The beach equipment was great to have as well (although the snorkeling gear was broken when we took it out, but still nice thought anyways). When we arrived, there was an issue with the A/C upstairs and this was quickly resolved. I was not aware that the unit does not have central A/C - only units in the bedrooms and a fan downstairs. The view was a amazing and we were able to keep a breeze blowing through so it wasn't that big of an issue. Other than some minor maintenance issues that could be improved, the condo was in great condition and we loved it!

Very well appointed condo with all of the supplies you need for a day at the beach (snorkels, toys, chairs, umbrella, coolers). Highly functional kitchen with everything you might need and more. Very large with plenty of room to spread out and convenient to have the kids in their own bathroom. Quiet master bedroom with no noise from other units or even from the kids (and husband) early in the morning. Ocean view is even better than advertised!

We had a wonderful time! We have stayed in several condos in the Poipu area, this is our new favorite. The view from the unit was great and you can hear the crashing waves. Coffee each AM on the balcony was fabulous. View sunsets from the property and sunrises a short walk away. The power of the ocean against the volcanic rock was addictive - we couldn't get enough watching it.
The unit was clean, a well equipped kitchen with 3 coffee brewing choices, lots of room for hanging clothes, soft towels in bath, air conditioning in bedroom was nice to cool down, but we turned it off to hear the waves a few nights, great cross breeze in unit if you open the front door. A nice gift of some goodies when you arrive.
Staff was very accommodating to emails prior to arrival, we had no need to contact anyone while staying there.

My husband and I enjoyed sunset on the beach and our two girls chilled in the condo during our short stay. Unit has great ocean views and it was nice to sit out on patio and try to spot whales. Unit has nice setup in kitchen and would be good for longer stays.

My daughter and her fiance really enjoyed their stay in this adorable condo. Well furnished for kids, the beach toys came in very handy! Your "welcome" items were greatly appreciated as well, delicious!
Only comment that was negative was that the bath towels smelled of mildew but nothing else did. Maybe time to recycle them?

Everything was as stated on the listing and pictures! Amazing views, short drive and walk to many things in Poipu as well as loved the location on the island. We went back and forth to the other major sides of to meet up with friends and would not have wanted any other homebase than Poipu.
The air conditioners in the rooms were game changers, all the things you needed and MORE were available in the unit.
Great job and would highly recommend if you are considering after seeing the pictures.

Overall the condo was great, love the location and view. This trip was hotter than we had in the past and no cool breeze to cool off down stairs, the portable AC units upstairs work but noisy and annoying. Other units have ductless AC and would be a nice upgrade.

Pros:
This unit was very spacious with a great Lanai with a pool and sunset view. The location in the south shore is good. There were many nice shops and restaurants and beaches less than 10 minute drive. The airport was only about 30 minutes away. The harbour for snorkelling Napoli coast tours was also less than 30 minutes away. Nice pool but hot tub was not working. The property manager was good with communication and answered all questions before and during stay. There is a safe inside the unit. The unit was clean. We really didn’t need much AC (July stay) as the fans were great. Nice welcome package much appreciated.
Cons: It is outdated. The door is really difficult to open and I found it uncomfortable that there is a lockbox that has the same code for all tenants (and staff) that come and go; all other places we stayed at in Hawaii had digital combo locks that could be programmed with personal codes for security. The second bedroom mattress is incredibly uncomfortable and appliances are old (very noisy) in particular the AC units were an issue as would not let the bedroom window close properly. Also there are a few very steep sets of stairs to get to the unit so if you have any back or knee issues or lack muscle power, this is a hard unit to get to and once you are inside, there is another set of steep stairs if you want to take your luggage to the bedroom !

We loved the location and the view. We walked to Poipu Beach every morning and saw turtles. The property and unit furniture were dated. It is partially air conditioned, the bedrooms only, not the main living area. In September its 85 during the day and I'm not used to the heat. There's a lot of stairs to get to the unit just heads up. The kitchen was well equipped. Cleanliness was 9/10. I would stay again for the view and location during a cooler time of year, if there is one.

The Makahuena condo is in an amazing location where you have unobstructed views of the ocean and can actually hear the crashing waves from the master bedroom. This is my favorite part about the condo. It is well situated in the lovely quaint town of Koloa (south Kauai). The condo is well appointed, clean and spacious. The property management team is awesome, incredibly responsive and truly takes pride in their properties. The Makahuena groundskeeping crew does an amazing job to keep the large pool clean and the landscape immaculate! This was my 4th time staying here and with certainty will return. Mahalo!

This property has everything a Hawaiian vacation needs: sunrise, sunset, a beautiful view and an amazing pool. The house is well stocked with what you need and there is plenty of room! The location is truly breathtaking and the view of the ocean from the lanai made the trip memorable. Communication was perfect and our trip went off without a hitch. Make sure you walk over to Poipu beach to see the sea turtles. A hidden gem of the place!!!!!!!! A+

Communication with Novella was on point. The unit was clean and well stocked with all necessary and non necessary items. Views from the lanai were absolutely wonderful. Parking was easy and plentiful. With all that said there were just a few things I noticed that could be addressed. No A/C in the main living area, which I would have known if I read the description thoroughly. The A/C in master was unusable one night but I opened the windows and had the fan on and it was comfortable. Novella took care of the issue and it worked perfectly. The washer was loud but we were grateful we had one, the timer on the dryer is broken but we had one so we worked around it. The furniture in the living room was nice looking and chairs were comfortable but the fabric always felt damp. We solved that by just putting a beach towel on them. All and all it was a comfortable place to stay and we would stay again.

My parents and I truly enjoyed our stay at this property! This was our first time to Kauai so we came with a lot of questions, all of which the owner was happy to answer. The owner was very communicative and helpful.
The property itself is a short 2min drive to Poipu Beach, and about 20-30min from the airport, in a very quiet area. We found the location to perfect for what we wanted to do during our vacation!

This was a great place to stay in Poipu, but it was outrageously expensive for what you get. My wife and I are used to traveling in the Caribbean and Europe where prices are a fraction of Kauai. I wouldn’t return simply because it’s simply not worth the cost when compared to the Caribbean and Mediterranean.

Not nearly enough light in the bedrooms, only 2 devices could be on the WiFi at the same time, and there are no luggage stands. As a couple, this unit was way more than we needed, but would be great for a family of 4. Good location in sunny Poipu, lots of whales.

Overall an excellent location and property. Terrific sunrise views. Easy access to locations in the Poipu area.
The only very minor things we would like to see improved/fixed are 1) the door lock which is a bit of bear to operate and 2) maybe some new beach gear. The beach chairs had seen better days and the small cooler could not be closed.
That said, the unit was very clean and comfortable. The management group was very responsive and helpful.
