Sandi was a wonderful host. The home was beautiful, very clean, with a really well stocked kitchen. The location was amazing. The view from the back yard was fantastic, especially on a clear night. We saw turtles resting on the rocks at the beach just across the road. A really nice quiet neighborhood. I hope that I can come back and stay again.

Lovely stay in lovely setting. Private quiet area with wonderful views. Complete with one fabulous swing in the yard that I thoroughly enjoyed and I am an old man!!!

The listing accurately shows the house and rooms. The setting is really nice with the back yard having an unobstructed view of Mauna Kea and Mauna Loa. And the beach is just across the street, we saw several turtles near shore. Nice quiet neighborhood. It is a bit of a drive to most destinations, though to be expected given how dispersed the island is. Hapuna Beach which is gorgeous is a short drive though. Hosts were very responsive to help deal with a few minor maintenance issues.

Enjoyed our stay in lovely Puako Ohana Hale. Very well-equipped inside and out with new furnishings. Outside shower is a treat. Access to our favorite beaches was so quick and easy: 8 minutes to Waialea, 10 to Hapuna and 15 to Spencer. Very quiet and peaceful near the end of Puako Beach Dr. Views of Mauna Kea and Mauna Loa and the dark night sky were tremendous. Walked across the street to the beach for sunset every evening and had our coffee there every morning. Terrific place, very glad we stayed here.

Came in 2022, returned in 2023. Love the back yard with views of four mountains, and to be able to walk across the street and watch the sunset

My husband and I spent a wonderful 6 days here for our 10th anniversary. I've spent a lot of time in the Puako neighborhood, and so it was lovely to be back. The home was beautiful, and had everything we needed for our stay. All the cookware we needed was provided, along with beach towels and chairs to use at the nearby beaches. The views out the back were tranquil, and a gorgeous sunset-watching spot was only feet away. We found it easy to use everything, and the owner was responsive when we had a question. I would definitely recommend staying here for a relaxing vacation. A few quick tips for those who come enjoy this property: the sugar is in the fridge, the laundry machine is out back by the shower, and you might want to bring an eye mask if you are not a morning person. It does get quite bright in the bedrooms in the morning.

Our family of 4 had an absolute blast staying in this lovely home! It was clean and spacious, providing enough room for us to all spread out and enjoy some alone time when it was needed. The tidal pools across the street are awesome to experience! The one problem we had with the door lock was fixed by the property manager very quickly. Very happy to have found this quiet, peaceful place! Definitely recommend staying here! We are already planning our next trip over it was such a great find! Thanks for sharing your home with us!!

Spent a week in this delightful house in a real community on the big island. The owner was very friendly and communicative. The views from the back of the house are amazing, and the water is close by just across the street with turtles and tide pools. The house is well equipped and comfortable. Would definitely stay here again.

We truly enjoyed our stay. The property is quiet and private in a residential neighborhood. The perfect home base to relax, enjoy the ocean across the street, snorkel within a 5 minute walk, drive to fabulous beaches just 5 minutes away, and find restaurants and shopping nearby. The home is clean, well maintained, and the floor plan is perfect for privacy. The owner and property manager were both very responsive and helpful throughout our stay.

This has become our favorite property in Puako for many reasons: peacefulness, great neighbors, view of Mauna Kea sunrises, epic sunsets out the other direction, boat cookies at the General Store, waves at Hapuna, ahi tacos at Kohala Burger…..that’s pretty much our vacation! So much time to do nothing but enjoy all of Big Island’s beauty and uniqueness. The back yard is one big reason we keep returning; it’s big, grassy and has a tree swing you won’t be able to resist. The kitchen is well stocked, the beds are comfy and the outdoor shower is fantastic. There is a large cache of beach stuff like chairs, boards and toys if you need them. Whether you like to roam the island all day or just stay at home, Sandi and Ken’s property will be a lovely respite from just about any troubles you might have. Just don’t take our two weeks in January please!!

There was snow on Mauna Kea almost our whole stay. Dawn was beautiful. The beach access is just across the street with so much fun marine life to observe and enjoy. The onsite property manager Johnny was helpful and friendly. Easy living.

I have stayed here several times and cannot recommend it enough - it is fully equipped, the host is super responsive and the location and peace of the house can't be beat. It would work for a small family, 2 couples or friends, as it did for us. The only problem is that it is too popular so I have to plan far in advance. Book it if you can!!

The view of the sun rising over Mauna Kea with the observatories in view and the snow was beautiful beyond words. This was right out the back door every morning. We also just had to cross the street to the public beach access to see the most beautiful sunsets I have ever seen. The house had everything we needed and was clean and well appointed. We had an issue with one of the showers and it was fixed within 3 hours of me texting the owner. We had a wonderful stay

This is a most peaceful retreat with the 24/7 feeling of being part of this special corner of the Kohala Coast. The view to Moana Kea is unobstructed with no neighbours in site and no lights to dim the night time star show. You can watch the sunrise over the volcano every day and the sunset across the street at the ocean every evening - this is heaven indeed. The house is well supplied, the beds comfortable and the bedrooms separate enough for two couples to enjoy. There is easy access to several of the best beaches on the island. The owners are very responsive if there are problems and there is a local manager. You will want to come back again and again (as we have)!

We stayed here for a week for a long overdue family vacation. The house was exactly what we needed. Enough space that our teenager felt like he had some privacy and a wonderful yard for our younger child to explore. The kitchen was really well stocked making meals easy to prepare. The quiet location was much appreciated by the adults. The sunrises over Mauna Kea from the lanai were sublime only to be closely matched by the sunsets at the beach, literally across the street from the house. The location was a perfect launching point for our daily adventures and the beach supplies made it easy to spend the day on the beach. Added bonus: The Puako General Store is a gem! We hope to return again someday soon!

We thoroughly enjoyed our 2 week stay. We have stayed on ocean side of Puako for many years but found we were very happy with the mountain view and back yard. The backyard is a haven for all sorts of birds Love the swing and sunrises! The beach access across the street is so convenient. The house is well stocked with most everything you would need and meal prep was a breeze. The owner has thoughtfully added new gel toppers to the twin beds making them very comfortable for our guest. The master bedroom is lovely with multiple windows to bring in the breeze. Neighborhood is quiet and friendly, we appreciated the lack of road noise. Puako is not for everyone but who are looking to relax without a resort experience it’s wonderful. We look forward to return.ing.

November 2022
My family had such a wonderful time at the house. The beds were comfortable, the kitchen had everything we needed, and the views looking towards the mountains couldn’t be beat. The space was also perfect for our two kids. Our older son loved the swing, beach equipment, and nearby tide pools and the house was baby proof for a crawling baby. We were visiting family in Waikoloa Village and thought the neighborhood was more pleasant than the nearby resort complexes. Thank you for having us and hope we can visit again soon!

Loved the layout of this open spaced home. And we actually preferred the quiet seclusion on not being right on the water. The view out the back over Mauna Kea was nothing short of spectacular, and I haven’t seen stars like I saw here for a very long time.

This property is away from the busy crowds of Kona and the resorts but convenient to lots of great beaches and activities. The house has all of the beach essentials that you will need and you'll appreciate the outdoor shower when you return from a beach day. It's a short drive to Beach 69 and Hapuna SP. If you leave early you can get a spot in the small lots at the Mauna Kea Mauna Lani beaches. A Bay beach is a bit farther and our favorite, Makalawena, requires a longer time in the car. But it's worth it if you don't mind driving very carefully down a 1.5 mile rough road and walking 30 minutes along a path through a lava field. Your reward will be a nearly secluded area that includes areas with calm surf and rougher surf. The beach is the most beautiful around! Of course, we enjoyed walking right across the street from the house to enjoy the sunsets (and then coming back to see Mauna Kea slowly slide into darkness) and early risers will enjoy seeing the sun come up over Mauna Kea. Sandi was a good communicator for any issues that came up.

We had a great stay in Puako. Quiet area which gave us everything we needed - close driving to beaches like Hapuna and many restaurants more in the resort areas. We were walking distance to great snorkeling (and diving). We went diving a couple of times in the area, and Puako reef is pretty great. We saw some turtles multiple times right on the beach right across from the property as well. The host communicated everything perfectly, and was easy to work with! We cooked a lot of meals, and everything we needed seemed to be available. There were also a lot of beach gear to borrow as needed (snorkels, boogie boards, cooler, towels, etc). We enjoyed the laid-back and quiet nights that Puako offers (esp compared to say downtown Kona), so would stay here again.

We loved this rental! The privacy and location are fantastic! The view is endlessly beautiful. The cleanliness is fantastic and the layout and couch, etc. are great! The ease of reserving and checking in and out was great. We definatley loved this rental! The only thing that needs to be addressed is the comfort of the twin beds. The mattresses are too hard and caused my sister neck and upper back pain. The extra padding and bedding that we added from the closet could not correct the issue adequately. If that gets corrected, then it would be perfect.

August 2022
This house was great. Very clean and comfortable. Perfect size for our family of 4. The location was excellent - amazing sunrise over Mauna Kea every day, easy walk to see the sea turtles and sunset at Puako Bay, and convenient to many gorgeous beaches, delicious restaurants, and Big Island activities. We would recommend to anyone. Mahalo!

August 2022
This neighborhood is amazing. The location is almost as convenient as being beach front. The house has all of the beach equipment, the outdoor shower is perfect - if you are looking for a chill house and are planning for days to soak up the sun on the beach and snorkel and avoid the city hustle - this is the house. The stars are amazing. Would love if the couch converted to a bed - but for my third kid, it worked. Lots of light in the house, so if you want to sleep in, bring a sleep mask. One more thing to note, very kind neighbors.

August 2022
We very much enjoyed our stay at this house. The layout was great for our family. We especially enjoyed the outside lanai with the views of Mauna Kei. And we loved the proximity to truly sterling beaches. We felt that the neigborhood was a hidden jewel. We rented snorkels and picked up groceries from the nearby Mauna Lani shops. We went snorkeling with manta rays by Mauna Kea resort. The quiet location was ideal for us, with wonderful proximity to wonderful snorkeling and beaches. The night sky was also astounding. I saw two shooting stars.

Amazing stay! Loved the swing, the outdoor shower, the sunsets and friendly folks on Paulo Road!! Our 11 year old especially loved the gecko sightings outside and honu 1/2 block away. Finally, watching the 4th of July fireworks at Mauna Kea from the rocks was magical.

This property is perfect in every way and we would love to live in this neighborhood permanently. The house is very comfortable and quiet. The views of Mauna Kea are spectacular. The turtles and tide pools are very fun. The central location to all of the beaches was a joy. As other reviewers have commented, your first morning on the lanai will make you feel like you are in Africa looking out over the savanna. There us also plenty of fine dining nearby at the local resort restaurants. We need to come back here again someday.

We stayed here for a few days while my husband was racing the Half Ironman. It was a great location that allowed us to walk to the Fairmont for the race check ins and start. Great for me as a race spectator. The house was clean and had a lovely backyard, it felt very secluded. The kitchen was perfectly equipped with all the pots/pans/knives etc you need to prep a meal including really nice blenders for smoothies. And we made use of the beach chairs and umbrella. It’s in a quiet residential area that is lovely to stroll through. The little shop/deli on the main road was a great lunch spot. It’s about 30-45 mins from Kona area restaurants and closer to several resorts with restaurants but I’d recommend grabbing some groceries and just enjoying time at the house with a pretty backyard view and quiet relaxing vibes. Would definitely recommend this property!

This home and property was a perfect match for my family of 4. Kids thoroughly enjoyed all the tide pools across the street and finding geckos. Close to wonderful beaches for snorkeling and boogie boarding. Amazing sunrises and starry night skies. The outdoor shower made clean up from our daily beach trips a breeze. This home is definitely a place that we will return to in the future. Thank you so much for allowing us to stay in your beautiful home.

Loved facing the mountain for a change. Liked the house, yard, and beach proximity alot but felt it's really set up for 2 adults and 2 kids and we were 4 adults (not premium bedding and really thin mattresses in second BR for example, only 2 good beach chairs). Missed having a full size blender for our group cocktails. Would have appreciated maid service after end of first week as we have had elsewhere. Generally though, highly recommend.

We just completed our 8th visit to Ohana Hale in Puako, and it only gets better each year. If you enjoy quietude and avoiding the hustle-bustle of resorts, then Puako could be a good fit. This rental property is tucked into a short side street that leads out to the open “savannah” where one can sit for hours watching for wild parrots, owls and the occasional feral pig snuffling about in the scrub. The Mauna Kea view reveals majestic sunrises and the wide open night sky just bursts with the brightest stars. It really is a magical place. This home provides all that you need and is accurately depicted online. The owners have become friends and are entirely responsive to all queries while the on site host next door makes sure that everything runs smoothly for you. You are just steps from the ocean and a long stretch of astonishing tide pools, with a top rated beach and phenomenal surf just five minutes down the road. Ohana Hale really feels like home, and we look forward to next year!

This home has everything you would want in a Hawaii vacation. What a beautiful peaceful setting! Sitting on the lanai looking at the scrub wilderness teeming with birds, the volcano and nothing of human construction is a gift. The owner was welcoming and immediately responsive to a small problem we had. The location could not be better for enjoying the nearby best beaches on the island and for touring. I am only reluctant to recommend this rental too highly so that it makes it more difficult for us to return. Thank you Sandi!

We loved our stay at Ohana Hale in Puako. The house was lovely and perfect for a family. We enjoyed sunsets across the street at the beach and waking up to the sunrise views of Mauna Kea. Very relaxing in the evenings, my daughters loved swinging in the backyard swing. Very nice residential neighborhood and near all the best beaches. Highly recommend.

November 2021
Ohana Hale was the perfect location for our week-long stay in Puako. We especially loved walking across the street to watch the turtles arrive at the tide pools at sunset, star-gazing in the backyard, and gorgeous sun rises over Mauna Kea every morning. The property is 5-10 minutes from amazing beaches, and a short walk to the petroglyphs. Well-stocked, and very comfortable - we'll be back!

Everything was as described. Communication was easy. My three adult children and I stayed here. The home and contents are well maintained. We loved the neighborhood. Woke up to beautiful sunrises over the mountain out back and watched beautiful sunsets over the ocean just a 30 second walk away. Sea turtles and night sky full of stars made it all the more delightful.

October 2021
While it is on the mountain side of Puako, the house has amazing views yet very easy access to the beach. The backyard feels like a retreat in the Serengeti and the sunrises from the tree swing and outdoor shower are to die for. As much as we love the ocean, we couldn't resist hanging out on the Lanai to watch the sunsets, moonrises and clouds over Mauna Kea. The backyard is so beautiful we had our professional family photos taken there in lieu of some of our other favorite spots on the island. The close beach access has tons of turtles and tide pools to explore. The quality of the house was much nicer than the photos reflect. The kitchen and BBQ were fully stocked and had Netflix for the kiddos. We love Puako as it has easy access to the best beaches on the island and can't wait to stay at this home again soon!

The bungalow is exactly as described and so close to the ocean. Very well-equipped, comfortable and in a beautiful setting. The back porch is perfect for watching the sunrise and napping in the shade in the afternoon. The lawn is visited by lots of birds, and there are friendly geckos everywhere.

August 2021
Our family of four had a wonderful time at Ohana Hale. The house was clean and in good working order with everything you need. The location is ideal, with a beautiful rocky beach just a 30-second stroll across the quiet road (we watched the turtles come in every night while watching the sunset) and excellent snorkeling also within walking distance. Other fantastic beaches are an easy 5-10 minute drive. The house is quiet with a nice layout (good separation of space between the two bedrooms) and plenty of room for a family of four to chill out. Ken and Sandi were wonderful (virtual) hosts. A great stay all around.

August 2021
This vacation rental is perfect in every way. The house was clean, nicely furnished and the kitchen was well equipped with lots of appliances and everyday essentials. Beach chairs, beach towels, coolers and snorkel equipment were available for our use and we enjoyed walking a few minutes from the house to a very secluded beach area where the snorkeling was exceptional and turtles were abundant. Walking across the street to watch the sunset (and the turtles coming out of the water to sleep) was amazing. The house is towards the end of a no through street so very quiet and a completely different experience to the busy resorts a few miles away- a great way to avoid the crowds. Close to various beaches by car and a good base from which to explore the island. We were sorry to leave and will definitely try to come back!

June 2021
We enjoyed the week at Puako. The beach is just across the road, and our favorite pastime was exploring the tide pools for wildlife. There are beautiful fish, urchins, and of course sea turtles. The home is in a quiet subdivision and the backyard view is breathtaking. The home was comfortable, spacious, and well stocked. We loved the outdoor shower for rinsing after a trip to the beach. We will plan to visit again soon and would choose this lovely home again.

June 2021
We loved staying in Puako! It's mellow and relaxing. We visited the turtles at the beach every night while watching the sunset. It was also nice to be so close to Beach 69, which is a wonderful swimming and snorkeling spot. The house was prefect for our little family of 3, and was fully stocked with everything we needed. Our 4 yr old son loved the tree swing in the back (and actually so did we!). We enjoyed all the birds in the backyard as well. Even saw a few cardinals. My only tip if staying at this house is to buy groceries and plan on cooking a few meals at home. There aren't many restaurants close by. Most options are in Waikoloa, 15min away. However, Hohala Burger & Taco in Kawaihae is by far the best food nearby (yum!). Also, plan on early mornings, because the window treatments don't block the light at all. We hung blanks up in our son's room so that he didn't get up at 5am :) Overall it was an absolutely wonderful stay!
