I own 5 vacation rentals in Hilo

This beach house is close to Hilo farmer's market, restaurants, shopping, waterfalls, volcano national park with active volcano, farmer's market, tours, astronomy center, university of Hawaii, Hilo medical center (hospital), and visitor activities.

House is equipped with kayak, boogie boards and beach equipment, Netflix, and high speed cable internet access (WIFI).

Available year round for nightly, weekly, and extended stays.
Owner of 5 homes directly across from Richardson's beach park and 3 ocean front homes in paradise park. I manage these homes personally with my cell number available to all guests. Payments are handled through the security of the Homeaway/VRBO site. Guests also receive information on restaurants, shopping and my favorite places to visit.

Why this property?
This new house was constructed to be a world class beach park house. Large windows open to large decks. Breezes blow right through the house. Wall controlled ceiling fans throughout. Ceiling lighting, only the nicest appliances. Leather couches, wood flooring, complete cookware.

Unique benefits:
If you plan on staying more than a couple days, you will have to enjoy the location. If you love the water and especially snorkeling, you will not find a better location. The best snorkeling is in just a few feet of water right in front of the black sand beach. It is like swimming in a tropical fish store. Green sea turtles come to rest for the night in the evening at the rocks just beyond the black sand beach. The water is largely sheltered by the rocks creating a partial lagoon. Yet this house is just down the street from downtown Hilo. Great for quick trips out to eat, shopping and many tourist locations. Review the "location" tab for a list of over 20 great places to see.

3. Guest vehicles shall be parked within the designated onsite parking area.

This isn't the owners fault and I really wanted to love this house because of it's beautiful location, very nice host and the amenities that came with with it, but two things spoiled the experience. As other reviewers have noted, the house is adjacent to a fairly busy road. The beautiful lagoon and park are just across that road from the house. We were unprepared for just how popular this road and park were with the local hot rod and motorcycle enthusiasts. From roughy 10am-10pm every day cars and motorcycles would run up and down this road (multiple passes from the same vehicles) screeching tires, doing burnouts and revving engines. With no AC in the house, windows and patio doors were always open. The sound from the road was so loud in the house that at many times you could not carry on a conversation or watch TV. Secondly, the area (and much of Hilo) is infested with Coqui Frogs. These frogs begin their song as soon as the sun goes down and the noise averages about 88-90 decibels. Again, no AC, so windows must be open, this made it very difficult for the little kids to fall asleep. As I've said, neither of the noise issues is the fault of the owner and I can appreciate the problems it creates for them. The house itself is old and needs a very thorough cleaning and refresh of moisture damaged furniture and fixtures, however, the wonderful and free selection of water toys in the outdoor shed was a hug benefit to us. We used them often. Great place. Too noisy

Our three generation group of 10 had a wonderful stay. This is a great location. Plenty of space for all, three family groups didn’t feel crowded. We all enjoyed the upper lanai. Plenty of towels, cookware, and dishes. We enjoyed the Hilo area.

The location of the Hibiscus house was perfect! There were six adults and two children and we had plenty of room to spread out. I appreciated the well stocked bathrooms and kitchen. Plenty of towels too. We had a fabulous time.

Our group really enjoyed this place. Things are a little dated but there have been many upgrades to the house. The cork board needs attention, updates and cleaning. No place to hang towels. Kitchen was well stocked as were the bathrooms.

This was our first time to the Big Island. We stayed here to explore Volcano National Park and take a helicopter ride. We had two families with 8 pp total. The house fit us well. Kitchen was well equipped. The house is not air conditioned, so thankfully it was not too hot while we were there. Wifi worked well, which was necessary as one of our group had to work a bit while there. The ocean park is directly across the road and was beautiful. We appreciated the umbrellas left by the door, as it rained everyday, at least a portion of each day. They were repaving the road out in front of the house, so one of our days there was a bit of a pain to have to park on a side street and walk to the house. No control of that by the owner though, and now the road is very nice to drive on. Overall, it was a great stay for a larger group.

Fell asleep on the deck listening to frogs sing. Woke and practiced yoga on the deck to crashing waves and bird songs. Walked the shore looking for turtles Snorkeled, Paddle Boarded and sat in the ice pond to recover. We also drove to a beach to go boogie boarding. All the toys were in the storage shed or we reached out to Richard. He does EVERYTHING he can to make the stay FIVE STAR!! The beds were comfy! The house was spacious! The kitchen was well stocked. Everything was clean. It is located close to the stores & airport. The only downside was how sad I felt to leave! I am told that is the price of a wonderful vacation. I can’t wait to go back! This was our second time we rented from Richard. We were very fortunate to have picked the best first!!😃

Location is very good would be excellent if it wasn’t for all the traffic that goes up and down the road, some like to rev their engines and speed. Parks in the area are busy, best to get out early. House could use some help with both replacing some items and cleaning a little more throughly. Overall it wasn’t to bad!

This charming property on the rainy side of the island was in an excellent location for families. Great swimming within an easy walking distance, we enjoyed the sounds of the jungle at night, and the house was well equipped with everything we needed including water toys. Our one suggestion would be some towel hooks in the bathroom to hang up after showering. Hilo is humid so nothing drys very well!

The layout of the house was fantastic for our group of 3 couples. Not only did we all have our own space, but the common areas were spacious enough for us to gather comfortably. We even utilized the living room, smart tv and youtube, and did group morning yoga. We loved the location. When looking out at the ocean we not only had a beautiful view, but we had walking access to a black sand beach with sea turtles (3 minute walk to the right of the property). We purchased simple meals to prepare for our group and found all the kitchen items needed to make our food including spices in the cupboard (I have stayed in many places, and this isn't always the case). If you are traveling with family or friends, this property would defijnitely be recommended for a nice quiet stay in Hilo.

The property was exactly as expected - clean and well stocked for our stay. Lots of towels, everything we needed in the kitchen. The bedrooms and bathrooms were clean and comfortable. The location was super convenient, I loved that we could pop across the street so the kids could enjoy the water without having to load up the car and drive somewhere! We will definitely be back and book this place again on a future trip.

We LOVED this house! It was clean, spacious, comfortable, and perfect for our family group of 7, with room to spare. The location is excellent, and we appreciated the variety of beach/water equipment, including boards, beach towels and booties that were provided. The kitchen had everything we needed too. What we especially loved was the look and feel of the furnishings and decor that created a beautiful welcoming Hawaiian ambience. We were really happy with everything about the Hibiscus house.

3 generations for 1 week in the bubble of love of the Hummingbird House. We took turns cooking in the generously supplied kitchen. We played many board games on the big table. We slept hard in comfy beds. We snorkeled, swam and played at the amazing Richardson Park. If your picky about your gear, bring your own.

This experience was fantastic from the start. Tons of communication with host, very friendly and easy to access when we first arrived after a long day of flying. Location was amazing, beautiful sunrises from the deck/patio and tons of close beaches to swim. Lots to do in Hilo and host even gives you lots of tips on where to spend time and visit. We had a whole range of ages and they all enjoyed! Plenty of bed space, lots of startup toiletries so we didn’t need to go to the store the first day we arrived. Would definitely recommend!!

September 2022
The location of this home is unbeatable. The beach, great snorkeling across the street, jungle walk a block up and the views from the upper deck made this home a special place to spend some days. An added bonus was the beach park was a frequented favorite of locals and we really felt like we experienced authentic aloha lifestyle. Nice big home to enjoy local Hilo.

Been here a few times. We have family in Mountain View. Great location!!!! Place was mostly as described, updated kitchen, master bath and bedroom. Upstairs appeared to be new renovations. We had a little ant problem, we arrived and counters were dirty (easy fix-just needed a through wipe down). No tv downstairs- plenty of room and beds! It was pretty warm and no breeze. Best to spend your time outdoors. House could use some screen doors so one can be able to leave them open without worry of bugs and creatures :) it was a nice visit- very relaxing

August 2022
Beautiful location, so excited to be right across the street from a fresh crystal clear water area (one night there was a huge sea turtle as well). First impression of the house is we loved the two outside porches and hardwood floors, however, very disappointed we were not aware there was no air conditioning. Opened up all of the windows, but breeze didn't help completely; didn't want to keep french doors open due to lizards or bugs (we liked lizards, just didn't want them inside). Kitchen had been recently remodeled, however, the rest of the house was not clean and could use an update. Second floor porch had full ocean view, first floor porch was obstructed by tropical plants. Enjoyed seeing the fruit trees including banana, avocado, lime, and mango.

April 2022
great spot if you are looking for a home on the Hilo side. we spent most of the time on the awesome front porch with views of the ocean. the house has plenty of beds and a fully equipped kitchen with all the tools, pans and utensils you can think of. the state beach across the street is perfect for swimming the location is outside the city center but it give the place a more rural feel. easy drive to hilo and volcanos national park.

April 2022
This house has lots of room, a nice lanai (porch) overlooking the ocean, and has the feel of old Hawaii. It's clean, easy to get to, and easy access to airport and old Hilo town. The ocean front parks are just out your door, great for morning snorkeling, walks, or just enjoying the sounds and scenes of the surf. Property manager was great and very helpful.

March 2022
The Hibiscus House had the most beautiful views. The house itself had everything we needed. The kitchen is upstairs and although great, the stairs made it difficult for one person to access. Loved the lanais with darling little geckos. The downtown area was close.by. Richard was always available and more than helpful. We had a great stay.

We stayed here for 5 nights and loved every minute! On our almost 3 week trip to Maui and Big Island we stayed at 4 different properties and this was the favorite of all of our group! House was even larger than expected giving our multi-generational family plenty of space and set up in a way for privacy as well.

We had a fanastic time in hilo. The hibiscus house is well equipped with kitchen supplies, towels, cooler, kayak, water shoes etc. The upstairs deck is where we spent most of our time. The location can't be beat. So close to the black sand beach across the street. Richard had an activities link that was extremely helpful. We enjoyed the kaumana caves and the hike to the falls/swimming was amazing. We also went to the zoo which was well worth the trip. Richard was easy to work with and responded promptly to my questions/emails. Relaxed, smooth vibe. Thanks!!

February 2022
Our family had an amazing time at this property. It was perfect for our needs. The beds were so comfortable, the home clean and equipped with everything for family-style breakfasts and evening cookouts. We loved being right across from the bay where we could go wade in the water and even watch some whales. The location is perfect to traverse the island and enjoy a vast variety of what the island had to offer as we were accomodating 7 people between 2 and 62, and all with different ideas of what the vacation should hold. The shed out back provided lots of toys, including snorkels, flippers, boogie boards, kayaks, and even a paddleboard and life jackets. We had an incredible time.

January 2022
This home was all we needed to begin our vacation on the Big Island! It was awesome to wake up to the sounds of the waves from across the street! The beach across the street does get busy, but there is another one with black sand really close by (walking distance) ; also this beach area further back has the sea turtles and some decent snorkeling. The house provides everything to get you started if you are headed out to buy groceries - syrup, coffee, some seasonings. The location was perfect for our adventures to the end of 137, Akaka Falls, Farmer's market, Volcano National Park and more. The recommendation of eating at Pineapples was on point - very Covid conscious with temp checks, masks etc as well as being open air! If we ever adventure back to Hilo area, this is the place to be!

January 2022
This was a fantastic house for our family gathering of 12 (ages 5 to 64). We really appreciated the well-stocked (appliances, cookware, etc.) kitchen. There was room for all of us to eat (usually kids at the table, adults on the covered outdoor lanai). We were pleased when we got there during a downpour to find umbrellas at the front door, that helped with bringing luggage in. We spent each morning on the lanai, looking at our own (what felt to us, personal & private) turtle cove, where we spent many hours snorkeling. We also appreciated the gear in the shed - water shoes, snorkels, flotation devices, even a beach chair for Grandpa.

Critique: Our only ding for the house was cleanliness. Upon arrival you could smell mildew - our bed sheets were moist as if they were washed but not allowed to dry properly. The bathrooms were also just dirty- dust and mold. We washed all the sheets and dried them using provided laundry and on our initial run for groceries bought wipes and some cleaning items to take care of the dirty bathrooms ourselves. It was not super great to do that upon arrival from a 6 hour flight. Things we liked: The property was a good size for our family trip (7 adults 3 kids) to Hawaii for 5 nights. Having two living rooms (one upstairs and one downstairs) was great to allow the kids a space to be loud and a quieter space for those who had to take a couple work calls. Kitchen was stocked with all the essentials. The house is located a 9 min drive to downtown Hilo and going to and from was easy. The information Richard sent beforehand for nearby attractions and how best to utilize our time was also very much appreciated. Richard was great about allowing us to stay a couple hours past regular check-out.

We had a wonderful stay with friends and family. Plenty of room for everyone to spread out and come together. The parks across the street are perfect, and it’s an easy short drive to town and a handful of fun adventures. We would all definitely return. And recommend the property to others.

August 2021
The location across the street from local parks with swimming and snorkeling is a major plus. The house is kept in good condition with plenty of beds but guests may have to use a bathroom on a different floor. The listing information is accurate, however, it is difficult to envision the layout. The “no shoes in house” policy is reasonable but if known in advance we could have packed more suitable indoor footwear. The gear shed needs to be reorganized and badly worn gear discarded. These are minor points — we would gladly stay there again.

July 2021
My family loved the location of this home. Being able to walk across the road to get in the water was perfect. The available water toys and equipment was fabulous! The only negative was that there was only half a roll of paper towels left for us to use. We loved the home, the location, and the town!

July 2021
the location was very nice for our family. We easily drove into Hilo town for shopping and seeing sites. From the steps of the house, we could walk across the street to view the impressive Mauna Kea, and play in the tide pools. little farther was Richardson's beach for excellent snorkeling. the 2nd floor porch was our fav spot to have tea and enjoy the view. nice bedrooms and a luxurious shower on the 2nd floor

We traveled as a family of 10 and loved being able to spread out and have enough room to be together but have our own space. We loved sitting on the balcony every evening with the ocean just across the street! Location was perfect for everything we wanted to do. We traveled to volcano national park…amazing! We also went to Akaka State Park and awed at the rainforest landscaped and waterfall. We also loved walking across the street to snorkel (go to the right across from the white life guard stand…corral was beautiful and fish were huge). The house had everything we needed and more!!! We LOVED it!! Thank you!!!

We were a group of 12 - six adults and six kids ranging from 2-11. This is an incredible location so nice to be so close to Richardson's (where we saw literally a dozen turtles). It was a nice perk to have shampoo/body wash available. Host and property manager were both very responsive and attentive. We loved having PFDs, boogie boards, etc to utilize. Fully stocked kitchen was great for making breakfast and whipping up some Blue Hawaii cocktails. View from the porches is beautiful. Fantastic experience!

We love Hilo side! This is the 3rd property we have stayed in of the owners. House was comfortable and very well equipped. Plenty of bedding and seating areas. Check in so easy and seamless. We will definitely use this owners properties again. Water equipment and bikes need maintenance ( 2 of 3 bikes unusable) one of 2 kayaks leaked)

3 nice full bathrooms. Best location ever. Turtles sunning on the rocks across the street. I swam daily with them. Lovely ocean view from both lanais.

Richard's house was perfect. Spacious, very very clean, beautiful and the location was perfect. The kitchen was well stocked with dishware, cookware and appliances. The rooms were spacious, and the ceiling fans and floor fans kept the house well ventilated. The balconies were used and we enjoyed our morning coffee looking out over the ocean. The beaches/parks across the street were good for snorkeling and turtle watching. Richard's list of favorite restaurants was quite helpful and we enjoyed many of his suggestions. We also used a couple of his beach chairs from his backyard shed. The grounds and landscaping were beautiful. The washing machine and dryer came in handy and were used a few times. The WiFi was good - no complaints from anyone! We appreciate the opportunity to get to stay at Richard's house and hopefully the next time we visit Hawaii and the Big Island his place will be available. Thank you Richard!

November 2019
Amazing rental house and rental experience. This house with 4 bedrooms was perfect for 6 adults from 3 different families. From the ground up: the grounds were beautiful and nicely kept. Once you enter the ground floor space is open with nice furniture. My cousin slept on the trundle bed while his mom slept in the larger bedroom. My other cousin took the double in the smaller room. We loved the hard wood floors throughout. Note that there are stairs to access the main floor. My mom who needs accessibility features found that the stairs were doable with the sturdy hand rails. The main (2nd) floor is gorgeous. Large living room with comfy couches and a dining table that can accommodate 8 plus people. The kitchen is fully stocked - coffee maker, filters, rice cooker, pots, pans, baking sheets, blender, kettle. It was nice to have some basic spices and cooking items in the cupboards ready to use (I don’t mind using these; I hate waste, saves from going out to buy oil, salt, pepper, sugar) No window screens in this area watch for bugs. My parents took the master bedroom with en-suite bathroom. I slept in the double bed in another room. There was another bathroom across from my bedroom. I appreciated the decor and cleanliness of the bathrooms. I will also add that there was shampoo, conditioner and soap already in both bathrooms so you may not need to bring them. It’s also quality hygiene items with no parabens and phthalates which is my preference. The bathrooms are also stocked with more than enough towels for showers and beach. If you run out there is a washer and dryer on location. Our favorite area was the balcony. Super clean, nicely painted and tiled. I enjoyed watching the sunrise and sunset from this balcony each day. The temperature was 84 each day. The rooms cooled off enough at night with the fans. We were also grateful for the beach toys available for our use. So glad there were water shoes and snorkels for the three of us that went for a swim and snorkel each morning. We only snorkeled at Richardson Beach (the two easterly coves) because we wanted to see a turtle every day (and I did!). Communicating with Richard was very easy. He was able to accommodate a late checkout. Note cost per night may change due to guest fees which seems to be the norm for the Hilo rentals I researched. Location was great. It was 10 to 15 minutes to anything in Hilo which was key because we were here for a funeral and family gathering. Thanks again Richard!

This is a beautiful house in a perfect location. Snorkeling, swimming, sea turtles are just across the street and everything we needed for water fun was provided. Richard is very easy to communicate with and quickly answered any questions we had. None of us wanted to leave this little piece of paradise!
