Terry,

We had the pleasure of staying at the Hale Hale Ai from 1/31/2020 to 02/05/2020. From the moment we entered the gates and then walked through the house, the only s heard were 'WOW" The entire home is beyond spectacular, while at the same time being so very comfortable and welcoming. The beds were so comfortable, and the view of the ocean from the master is amazing. Everything from the linens to dishes was perfect and everything we needed was there.
Our favorite time was sitting on the back deck after a long day of sightseeing and watching the ocean from the covered patio in the lounge chairs. Stunning.
The property manager was attentive and gave us many suggestions of places to go and things to see. Everything was as described and the whole experience was easy and seamless.
All of us agree that the next time we are in Hawaii, this is the house we want to rent and have already recommended it to family and friends.
Thank you so very much for an amazing stay!!!!!!!

Hi Terry,
Today was the last day for me to write a review on our stay in Hale Hale 'Ai , so I wrote one tonight. However, I just missed the deadline (apparently it was 9 pm here in CA, not midnight). So I here is the text I had written. I will try to contact VRBO to see if I can still post it.
Beautiful and spacious home, right at the ocean. Gorgeous kitchen with everything we could possibly need, new appliances, and lots of silverware and dishes. Master bedroom had an amazing enormous bed, and walk in shower with pebble floor. The other bedroom had a toilet space with sink, and a 2nd bathroom across the hall. Everything was perfectly clean and new. Lots of towels, sheets, hangers, soaps, and dish washer tablets. Big washing machine and dryer, with tablets provided. The back of the house consists of sliding glass doors that open up all the way to enjoy the sea. The back yard is open to the cliffs, so not safe for the little ones, but what an amazing sight. We saw spinner dolphins every day, and enjoyed their show. Whales came by every now and then and three nene geese payed us a visit too. Perfect spot on the East side of the island to visit the Botanical Garden and waterfalls of Hilo, to visit the Volcano National Park, and to drive to the destructive lava flows of 2018. Thank you for having is stay here, we felt so much at home."

Enjoyed our stay. The water was beautiful. Saw turtles every day. The AC works for real, which is a nice touch for sure.

Property was better than the listing described. The house was amazing, the view from the lenai was even better. I wish we had stayed longer. Communication with property management was responsive and timely. We can’t wait to get away from it all again and stay here.

First, this property is amazing. Front start to finish, the renters were easy to work with and provided an enormous amount of information for our stay. Second, the home itself was spotless, easy to maneuver in and the kitchen well stocked with whatever we needed. The views speak for themselves. We spent most of our time sitting outside by the lava rocks or on the veranda in the Adirondack chairs just looking out over the ocean and up and down the coast. We did not find a ton of options on this side of the Island that suited our needs (we needed AC) and wanted the view - the place had both. Needless to say, our time was relaxing and thoroughly enjoyed. We would 100% recommend this property to anyone looking for an A+ option in the Hilo area. A note about the rental company. We lost our key hiking on the Saturday of our stay. I called Amber and she immediately got back to me with a plan to get us another set of keys. They really went above and beyond considering it was my mistake. I would also highly recommend dealing with Amber and Terry for any real estate/rental needs on the Island.

Excellent property, exactly as described. Nice, quiet neighborhood. Comfortable house. Excellent beds. The only negative is IF you are a late sleeper, the master bedroom has no shades (opens to the water so plenty of privacy) and the early morning sun comes in directly. Other bedroom, very comfortable, is very dark. Definitely will stay again next time in Hilo.

We had a great time here! The house was clean and well maintained. The views are amazing. We were able to see sea turtles, dolphins, and whales from the house. Quiet, peaceful, and private. Just what we needed!

March 2023
The house is beautiful in a quiet neighborhood. We spent many hours sitting on the well situated lanai. Incredible sunrises and while we were here there was a full moon sparkling on the waters. A perfect Hawaiian vacation!

If you are looking for a quiet, private get away, this is perfect. The house is beautifully appointed and the ocean waves can be heard all night long.

I recommend this beach house for adults who wish to get away from the hustle and bustle of the tourist sections of Kona and Hilo. Located in a very nice area right on the coast, so it is lovely to sit out on the back porch and watch the ocean both in the morning and just prior to sunset

The views of Hale Hale'ai are hard to beat. We saw whales from the comfort of the lanai! The house is immaculately clean and the check in/out process is painless.

We have a 15yr history of staying with VRBO properties and have never had a bad experienced until Hawaiian Paradise Park. Terry is a realtor, not a property host. With that he is more interested in keeping his property in pristine condition than hosting visitors. Terry has surveillance cameras around the property to ensure guests are behaving. VRBO surveillance policies explicitly state that these are allowed as long as they are NOT pointed to areas of privacy (bathrooms, bedrooms) and that the on-property instruction book has a diagram of where the cameras are recording. Neither of these policies is being followed. The camera lens outside of the master bedroom is pointing directly in thru the window at the master bed and there are no blinds or shades to offer you any privacy. Per VRBO policy, we contacted VRBO and was asked to wait onsite while they investigated. We then left the next morning for a hotel and as directed by VRBO filed a report with the police. If Terry continues to rent this property out, the police recommended that he install blinds in the master bedroom as well as the entire length of the lanai window doors. Until then, if you do decide to stay here, please put up towels yourself in the master bedroom window to avoid having your privacy stolen from you like we did.

From the moment we pulled in the driveway we knew this place was so special! The yard is a tropical paradise with beautiful plants. Wonderful cliff top ocean views and sunrises coming through the glass doors each morning - we used this as our alarm clock so we could get our activities in before it was too hot in the afternoon! This house is in a residential area - not a touristy spot so it is a little quieter which is what we preferred. This served as a perfect ‘home base’ for us to explore the big island but come home to the peace and tranquility of coqui frogs at night and lots of interesting birds. The house is well appointed and had everything needed for cooking, and we very much appreciated being able to do a load of laundry before heading to the next island. The bed was super comfy - I have never slept so soundly away from my own bed. The pool was an awesome bonus especially after a HOT day of hiking at Volcanoes National Park. We didn’t see any spinner dolphins during our stay - but we were also silly and didn’t find the binoculars in the tv cabinet until the final evening! Terry was super responsive and helpful with restaurant and activity suggestions. We loved every moment we spent here and hope to visit again someday. Mahalo! A hui hou.

I can't say enough good things about this property. For our trip we spent time on Oahu, Maui, and Big Island. This was by far our favorite property. This wonderful home is on a beautifully landscaped lot. The home itself is beautiful, very well equipped, and exceptionally clean. The lava cliffs with crashing waves provide a welcome view and background noise. I was a little worried about the safety of the location prior to arrival when we were informed to always keep the gate and house locked up but never once did we feel like safety was an issue here. The surrounding area is very nice. The absolute only suggestion I would have for the property owners would be to install an automatic gate opener with keypad for entry vs having to get out and manually open the lock/cable and gate. Terry is a great property manager and responds quickly to all inquiries. The owners have done themselves a favor by letting Terry manage this property.

Fantastic property with a great location to explore the East side of the Big Island. The sights and sounds of the ocean from the house make it a spot to relax and enjoy vacation time. Loved the upscale decor and furnishings of the house that made it a luxury Hawaiian home. Would highly recommend for anyone looking to truly relax, disconnect from a hectic world and enjoy Hawaii.

This house was beautiful and comfortable inside, but the lanai and views outside were even better. It was hard to tear ourselves away! Sunrise on the lanai with a cup of coffee in hand cannot be denied! You will have a 30 minute drive to Hilo and it’s many attractions, but you will also be relatively close to Volcanoes park. It’s a good location for doing lots of things. The house was very clean, everything worked, and the beds were very comfortable. The directions from the host worked perfectly for getting in and out. Bonus: Nene wandering around in the neighborhood. Note: waze gets confused easily in the neighborhood, but you don’t really need it as there are only a couple of roads that you learn quickly.

This home is located on a lava bluff overlooking the ocean. While there is no ocean access there, the sound of the surf and the ocean breezes were very nice. The glass wall that retracts to open the entire end of the house to the sea was a special treat. The house was modern, clean, well equipped, roomy and had high-end finishes. Having air conditioning was also nice to cool it off when the trade winds weren't quite enough. Convenient to Volcano National Park, Hilo, the beaches and sites on the east side of Hawaii island it was a pleasure to spend time there.

This home was exceptionally clean. The kitchen was well-stocked with everything you would need to prepare gourmet meals, and everything else in the home—bathroom fixtures, lighting, furniture, amenities—was top notch. As you can tell, we loved our stay! Renters should be aware though, that while this home is perfectly located to enjoy the sights and sounds of the ocean there is no beach/water access. The owner makes this clear, so there should be no ambiguity on this point. Also, if you love Thai food be sure to check out Ning's in nearby Pahoa. You won't be disappointed! Finally, If you want to get away from it all, and experience luxury in "real" Hawaii, this is the place!

April 2022
Beautiful property right on the ocean. The pictures don't do it justice! The large sliding doors are the best feature as you can open and let the sounds and smells of the sea flow into the house. We sat on the lanai each morning with our coffee and watch the sun poke through the rain clouds. I also found it to be a great place to catch up on some reading. We found the house to be extremely clean and the everything was in working order. Beds and linens were very comfortable. This house is a little bit of a drive from Keaau or Pahoa, but that was fine for us as we wanted something that would have that feeling of being isolated and able to disconnect and run at a slower pace.

They say about real property the three things that matter are location, location, and location. This property is in a spectacular location, but that is just the beginning of what makes this special. It has sliding windows across the panoramic view of the ocean that (other than during a monsoon day or two) we always kept open just to take in the rhythms of the waves. The master bedroom opens up on that, so we awake each morning to the sunrise. There are two more bedrooms and three more toilets, all perfectly appointed. The level of organization that Terry has put into the space is mind-blowing, with drawer arrangements that inspired me to re-examine my kitchen at home and idiot proofing to ensure that the place stays pristine. The furniture and art is more than tasteful. This is just a first class place to spend time. I gave a little thought to what might improve the experience and could only come up with an automatic gate when you drive in and out. The manual process of locking and unlocking is out of step with the class that everything else on the premises exudes. If that hasn’t changed when next I return, however, I won’t be upset.

March 2022
This is a great place to kick back and relax. We spent three days here and there was no need to go anywhere. The kitchen is fully stocked with everything you need. Sitting on the lanai watching and feeling the rumble of the waves was an experience we will never forget. The pool was a great touch as well.

This tucked away property was perfection. Extremely well appointed and so clean! It’s the first property in Hawaii we didn’t see a cockroach! A lot of thought and care went into this property and it’s amenities. While tucked away, it is still an easy drive to Hilo or Volcano National Park. It was easy to feel like you’re alone on the island. A group of five fit perfectly! We enjoyed our mornings watching the sun come up and seeing whales most every day. We will not hesitate to book this property again!

January 2022
Great location, on the water in a quiet residential neighborhood. The entire front of the home has sliding glass doors that can be opened to catch the breeze and sound of the sea. The home is well laid out and very comfortable. The furnishings are top notch and very comfortable. The kitchen is well designed and very functional with new appliances. Cooking and serving utensils are top notch. Bathrooms are also good. Grounds are tidy and well maintained. Very good air conditioning that we hardly used. The owner was smart and kind enough to label light switches, small touch but very helpful in an unfamiliar home. We had a great stay... it was just what we wanted, If you want a party scene, it may not be for you. Also, no beach (that I know of) that you can walk to. But, if you're here, you must have a car and can get to abeach, etc.

Amazing property! Can’t say enough good things about the location. It’s within 20 mins of Hilo and within an easy 45 min drive to the Volcano’s National Park. Wouldn’t think twice about staying here again!!

November 2021
The property is as beautiful and pristine as it looks in the pictures. The reason why I dropped a star was because there are no blinds or curtains on the floor-to-ceiling windows in the master bedroom, which means you have zero privacy in the bedroom if you are sharing the house with other guests. Also, while watching the sunrise in bed was lovely, I did not want to wake up with the sunrise every day, and I would have liked a way to stop the sun shining in my eyes first thing in the morning. When I asked the property manager about whether there were curtains/blinds for the bedroom, my request was dismissed, basically saying that the ocean view was the priority. As if curtains/blinds are not designed to be easily opened to allow ocean views. If you are an early riser, and planning a solo trip or with your significant other, this will be a good choice.

September 2021
We thoroughly enjoyed our stay at the dolphin house. The home and view were amazing. Being right on the water and listening to the waves was a dream come true for me. The only thing that would have been better was a shorter drive to Hilo! I would stay here again

Suggestions would be shades for master bedroom, and something out back to help control mesquitos.

August 2021
The views from this house are spectacular. Sitting outside on the lanai with coffee, looking out to the ocean was amazing. This house had everything we needed. The kitchen is the best equipped in any rental I’ve stayed in. There aren’t a lot of restaurants so we stayed in most nights and cooked. We got everything we needed at Malama Market in Pahoa and the farmers market. I would definitely stay here again!

August 2021
All I can say is WOW! If paradise has an address, this has to be it!!! Falling asleep to the sound of the surf and waking to the sunrise over the Pacific? Perfection!! And if the view wasn’t enough, the inside of the property is GORGEOUS! Comfy beds, beautiful kitchen, spa-like bathrooms… Plus a super convenient location to see sights in Hilo, Puna, Volcano, and Mauna Kea. Thank you so much for sharing this slice of heaven with our family!!!

July 2021
This home is pretty spectacular. It was immaculately clean when we arrived. The beds were super comfortable and the house had all of the amenities you would want on vacation (oils, spices, beach gear, etc.). The location was also great to explore the Hilo side of the Island. We explored Hilo, Waipio Valley, Volcano, Isaac Hale Beach Park, and other places very easily. My only issue is that the doors are not able to stay open at night because there are no screens. This means that you cannot hear the ocean at night, even with the windows open. I don't know if I would rent this home again due to that, honestly, even though it was an amazing home. So, if that is not a deal breaker for you, I would rent this house in an instant.

The views at sunrise (from bed) are incredible. Every detail of the house has been thought out ton perfection. Can't say enough. Just an amazing place to explore this part of the island.

June 2021
Amazing Sites and Sounds! The ocean is amazing from this location. The sunrises cannot get any better and the waves crashing against the short cliffs are perfect to fall asleep to. This is an excellent location if you are planning on visiting Volcanoes National Park. Hilo is not your typical tropical touristy town. The home was spotless and the lanai was the perfect place to hang out after hiking and exploring the eastern side of the Big Island.

May 2021
There is no way you cannot relax at this home! The views of the sun rising from the bed to dancing with my wife under moonlit skies overlooking the ocean was breathtaking taking! The manager Terry was great texting us making sure we were well taken care of!! Highly recommend!

May 2021
The house is absolutely beautiful. I struggled with the 4 or 5 stars as the house deserves 5-stars but the policies/communication ultimately led me to rating this experience 4-stars. The pros: The pictures showcase the house well. It is a beautiful home that we were overall pleased to have stayed. The home is a short 30 minute drive from Hilo airport so easy to get to. It is about an hour from Volcano National Park and 30 minutes to an hour from waterfalls pending which ones you choose to visit. This was great for touring the East side of the island. I had stopped at the store upon landing and wished I had gone to the house first. I bought some supplies I didn't need as the house is well stocked with adequate supplies such as garbage bags, dish soap, dishwasher tabs, oils, and spices, toilet paper, hand soap, etc. I ended up leaving quite a bit for following travelers. The cons: I am always hesitant when I submit a request and I receive a confirmation that states I need to sign an additional contract. I would recommend getting your details in order before the cancellation timeframe. The owner wanted to charge me to have my boyfriend's family members (from the Kona side) over for a lunch. I felt al little bit of hypocrisy here in I would have paid the same price for my stay whether I had 5 people or 2 people. I wasn't informed of the pool service coming on property so was a bit confused when I went out to the pool to find cigarette butts on the ground. Terry the property manager did come have these removed. Also, the last issue I had the night before leaving I reported was a community member walking through the yard (along the glass doors side) as I was changing This is an issue as again, you will see from the contract, it states very clearly to not cross over into neighbors property nor get near the cliffs. I appreciated my stay, but I think the strictness takes away some of the hospitality enjoyment. It rains a lot! If I were to do this trip again, I would stay here 3 nights - enough to tour the East side, and then transition to the West side where there is more sunshine and drier climate.

Flann H.
March 2021
We couldn't have been happier. We looked at a lot of options and this house - while on the 'rainier' side of the island - was spectacular. Morning coffee with the accordion doors fully opened. Beautiful sunrises. If you want something more 'local' and away from the touristy Kona side, this is it!

March 2021
This house is great for 2 couples. You can tell they take good care of it. It rained the whole time we were there but it's a good location to access both HIlo and Volcano. The laundry was great to have with the rain and hiking. We hired a professional chef to come and cook dinner one night which was amazing with the open concept to the patio. Would definitely stay again.

Beautiful home right in the ocean. Fell asleep each night listening to the waves. Nenes visit frequently. The home is accurately shown in the pictures. The kitchen is well stocked. Nice quiet neighborhood. Wonderful fruit stands near by. Would happily stay here again.

We were in awe of the panoramic views of this amazing home! Though we spent an entire week exploring the Big Island, our absolute favorite part of our trip was sitting on the patio, drinking coffee, watching the sunrise (sometimes from bed!) and just listening to the waves crash against the cliffs below. I have never slept so good in my life! Even with the sound of the singing frogs, rain and waves it was like the perfect lullaby- not to mention an extremely comfortable bed! Whales swam by and smacked their tales several times throughout the week , one even leapt out of the water ! This was an amazing experience! My family really enjoyed everything about this home - it was hard to leave! Definitely hope to visit this little piece of Heaven again someday. Terry was amazing at communicating and making sure we were comfortable- Mahalo for your hospitality!

This property exceeded our expectations, all the extra amenities like binoculars, board games and kitchen extras and privacy wall really worked out wonderfully for 4 adults. Could have used a few extra towels but lovely property and would definitely come back again.

You can't swim in the ocean here, but it stretches out before you in all directions to the horizon. In a little-trafficked side of the Big Island, you can truly relax. The house has many unique features--the video and photos are not an exaggeration! I felt like I was living in the lap of luxury here. Even when it rained for days, we were happy to sit on the lanai and watch the ocean and listen to the birds and lizards. Three separate sleeping areas means two couples and some kids can enjoy the large kitchen/common space but also retreat to their own areas. And of course so much is nearby for exploration. The manager was helpful and patient with the many little dramas of Covid. I felt completely safe all by myself there, and hope to return again next year. My brother & wife visited for a few hours, and they, too, were blown away by how gorgeous the house is.

Probably one of the best Vrbo or rental unit I’ve ever stayed in terms of the house and furniture, maintenance and location. The only downside is that it’s about 20 mins from the nearest large grocery store but so minor given it’s beauty.

March 2020
Off the beaten path, this house is well worth it! The property manager, Terry, was wonderful and easy to work with. The property itself is breathtaking. The pictures do not lie - the ocean and cliffs are just a few feet off the back patio. We were lucky enough to see a baby whale learning to breach and then the mother's tail going down to nurse the baby. It is very apparent that the homeowner's have great hospitality! Everything in the house was perfect - from the matching dishes, every kitchen utensil you may need to cook (and we chose to cook dinner at the house every night because the house and views were unbeatable!). We have no complaints about this property! Enjoy!!

We could have not asked for a better place to stay for our Hawaii vacation. This beautiful home was spotlessly clean and comfortable with all the conveniences of home. The lanai was a great spot to relax and watch the waves. The neighborhood was perfect for an early morning walk to enjoy the sunrise and maybe some whale spouts.

My husband and I loved staying at the House of Dolphins! We wish we could have stayed here during our whole time in Big Island. Great views and very private. It had all the amenities that we needed. If we came back to the Big Island, this would be the place we would stay!

This place is straight out of a magazine! I always used to look at homes in magazines and wish I could take a vacation there and my wish came true at Hale Hale Ai! The views of the ocean go on for miles. The master bedroom faces out to the lanai and every morning we were greeted with the most beautiful sunrises. The kind of sunrise that you would see in pictures or magazines. I can’t even tell you how awesome the master bathroom shower was. You need to experience this for yourself. Custom designed shower with beautiful matte black fixtures. This house is the epitome of “Oceanfront” living. We were so close to the ocean, I never imagined I could be sitting here watching the whales jump and play! Oh, and the sea turtles catching waves! AMAZING!!!! The design and decorations of this house went beyond our expectations. The kitchen layout with open concept and bar seating was a designers dream! Everything and anything we needed was here. From spices to boxes of teas, to providing us water upon our arrival was definitely a five star service! The beds were extremely comfy. Lines and towels were awesome! (by the way can you tell me where you got your bath towels 😉). After a few days here I never wanted to leave. We only stayed for 4 days an that flew by way to fast. So next time we come back to Hale Hale Ai we will stay longer! Sad our vacation is over but happy to find this oceanfront gem! Don’t pass this property by if you want luxury and killer views!! Thank you again to the property manager, Terry! He was amazing and provided us with lots of ideas! Lastly the gift bowl of Hawaiian Chocolate nuts were a bonus surprise!

First impression: OH MY ARE YOU KIDDING ME?!?!!!” Absolutely gorgeous house and view. The view of the ocean and wave activity was spectacular-quiet beauty of sunrises filled us all with peace as we welcomed the mornings on the porch. House: extremely well appointed-detailed kitchen well supplied-bedrooms and bathrooms ( wonderful towels-extremely satisfied with beds and bedding) spacious-lots of supplies... just so many details tended to and so appreciated. Location: perfect for us... convenient to towns yet in quiet, semi isolated, area of paradise park. Property manager: easy to work with-responds quickly and efficiently. Raves from the four of us! Mahalo and Aloha
