There were 6 of us and we really enjoyed our stay. The house is beautiful and we all had plenty of room. The kitchen is perfect for cooking a meal, which we did many times, and the dining area is roomy too. The sunsets in Puako are incredible - the colors and the contrast. There were sea turtle in back of the house and the water was warm too! It was a perfect break! We will be back!

Just as pictured! Well stocked and equipped. Had a couple issues that were taken care of. Great host! ONLY complaint…why such a difficult stove top 😂. Only a couple people in the group of 8 could properly work it!

If you're looking for a perfect place to relax, unwind, and enjoy the spirit of the islands, Hale Ama will meet your needs perfectly. Warm breezes, gentle surf, turtles, whales, and dolphins passing the lanai, while world class snorkeling awaits you just beyond your backyard. Each night we enjoyed our evening meal oceanside just before catching another Hawaiian sunset and then retiring for another comfortable, quiet night's sleep. Kayaking is available, along with shoreline hikes, easy access to beautiful beaches, scuba diving, etc. We've vacationed on Oahu, Maui, Kauai, and the big island, and Hale Ama at Puako is our favorite destination. Highly recommend.

Hale Ama is a beautiful home on the coast - lots of interesting tide pools to explore - snorkeling right outside the door. Lovely beaches close by. A great set up for a larger family with en suite bathrooms. Good working kitchen - great lanai with lots of space. Whales! Rainbows!

This is a wonderful property with ample space for a large group. Large bedrooms and open, gracious indoor and outdoor living areas. The home is beautiful, with attractive furnishings and an open layout. Beautiful sunsets every night. The property manager lives nearby and was attentive to any questions or issues that came up. It is conveniently located on the Kohala Coast, very close to Hapuna Beach and nearby resorts and golf courses. A short drive to Waikoloa Village for groceries and shopping. There is also a general store just down the road for immediate needs.

This exceptionally well-appointed Puako Beach house is directly on the water. It offers a very private experience, complete with beautiful tide pools in front of the house and visiting turtles that frequent the area. The main house generously provides three bedrooms, each with its own bathroom. Extensive common areas are well-appointed and welcoming, especially the lanai, which wraps around the ocean side of the house and offers a variety of sitting areas for great conversations (or naps!) The main living room / dining area is spacious, beautifully appointed, and comfortable. The kitchen is extremely well appointed (Wolf induction stovetop; SubZero refrigerator and freezer; food processor, etc.) and comes with a spice drawer and baking supplies, which offer lots of potential for creative morning delicacies or savory late dinners. The TV room easily accommodates gatherings for relaxing around the home theatre. A separate cottage behind the main house offers an exclusive bedroom / bathrooms / small kitchen and sitting room. If a couple in the group needs a little more privacy, this is the spot! It was a delight to be here and we hope to return! It is a gem of a property that assures you will be welcomed with the very best of Hawaii’s hospitality. Aloha!

Our extended family wanted a "perfect" Hawaii vacation after the trials of Covid. We found it at Hale Ama. Snorkeling, kayaking, beachcombing, and turtle watching are great right behind the house! Even saw dolphins and a whale from the lanai! The accommodations are spacious, well-appointed, and comfortable. Whatever your desire, it seems easily fulfilled. In fact, we enjoyed our stay so much, we spent most of our time just "kicking back" and taking in the ocean view, breeze, and beautiful sunsets. We hope to return, and if you go, I'm confident you won't be disappointed.

This is such a beautiful property The house is very well equipped with a great chef kitchen ! But the old Hawaiian feel of the property because of design and art work is just amazing Loved the movie room Spectacular ocean view and sunset. Tons or whales , turtles and great snorkelling just steps from property.

Our 3 generation family had a wonderful 2 weeks together in Hale Ama. Hale Ama is a beautiful and comfortable beach house in a perfect location. Plenty of space for gathering, and for quiet time. A great well-stocked kitchen and a colorful picnic table on the lanai, that was our meal time gathering space. Nightly sunsets, whales, turtles! Easy communication with Joe and Holly. Mahalo!

Words can't do justice to the beauty, peacefulness and warmth of this house and location. We have stayed in many homes and Hale Ama is by far the best. The house is immaculately cared for by Holly (our greeter & caretaker) and no details have been overlooked by the owner -- from a layout that allows people space as well as gatherings around the outdoor porches; comfortable great rooms; beach & lava shores; the kitchen island and wonderful dining table; to the ocean breezes flowing through the house and bedrooms; to all of the little touches, including snorkeling gear and beach shoes, an extremely well stocked kitchen (a coffee grinder & milk frother as well as a Kitchenaid mixer, Vitamix and Cuisinart!). The house was also incredibly well maintained and clean (a bonus in these days of Covid precautions). We also loved the location with the ocean & tide pool walks out the back door as well as nearby beaches for snorkeling and swimming/boogie boarding and nearby Waimea with great dining options away from all of the resorts. A true gem.

We loved our stay at Hale Ama and recommend it HIGHLY. We were two families of 4 w/teens. Saw turtles daily and didn't need to get on the main highway to do incredible snorkling. The house is beautiful and special. A couple little mishaps along the way, but Holly handled them nicely. If you're on the fence, go for it!

We can not express enough the pleasure we received staying in this well loved home. We stayed for 10 days, and were so sad to leave. Impressed by: the local artwork and finish details of the home, the mango flooring, nano doors, beach location, amazing chefs kitchen, bedroom setup, plus guest house, the lanai, turtles and snorkeling out the front door. Oh, and the sunsets every night. Do yourself a favor and book this place! Thank you Joe! We cared for it like it was our own. Emily + Howard

Our trip was a reunion for my wife's siblings and spouses. We had seven people there, all of which were around 60 years old and the trip was fantastic. The home and views are breathtaking. I am always reluctant in trusting the pictures the owners provide on their website, but in this case I am pleased to admit that the actual views and the quality of the home were much better than the pictures. My wife and I have been scuba diving at Puako for years and were desirous of staying in Puako. We typically stay in Waikoloa, which has been great; however, we just love the beauty of the reef along Puako and we enjoy a more quite and private setting. We feel this home is one of the most beautiful homes in Puako. We stayed at Hale Ama in February and were able to watch humpback wales from the home. Everyone in our group had a great experience and is certainly a location we will look for in future trips!

Hale Ama is in a beautiful location right on the water in quiet Puako. There is no better place to watch the sunset while savoring a glass of wine. We had some great hikes all around the island. Coming home and cooking fish caught locally that day was a joy. We had our grown "kids" with us with their significant others and each couple had their own, private quarters. It was easy to get together and share time or to go separate ways. We look forward to our next stay!

My family voted Hale Ama the best Homeaway house we’ve ever rented! (and we’ve rented many!) The house is homey and elegant at the same time. It was perfect for seven of us, the balance of private space ( each bedroom has its own bathroom) and gathering space was just right. I have to mention the master bedroom shower: it’s the best shower ever! You get to seach the horizon for whales while washing your hair! The house is incredibly well equiped and well maintained. The location cannot be beat, we saw whales and sea turtles daily from the lanai. I highly recommend Hale Ama for the best Hawaiian vacation ever! Thank you!

This place is the real deal. Probably the best home we've stayed in EVER and we've stayed in many of the best. Simply gorgeous interiors and exterior. It sits on a lava bed steps away from the clear, turquoise blue Pacific. There are numerous, lovely and comfortable places to sit inside and out. All rooms are beautifully decorated with Hawaiian fine art and hand crafted furniture. The kitchen is perfectly stocked with everything anyone could possibly need to prepare a meal. We used the large, well designed, outdoor bbq most nights. The bedrooms are also gorgeous, with comfortable beds, a/c, lovely linens and each one has it's own stunning bathroom. Wait until you see the dining room table. It's huge and sits by the enormous sliding glass doors with incomparable ocean views of sunrises and sunsets. My family and I can hardly wait to return.

We have traveled to Hawaii many times over the past 10 years but we have never stayed in a more beautiful, well equipped and comfortable home. The owners have thought of everything. The location can't be beat with a beautiful lanai, swimming right in front, and turtles galore. Peter and Holly take beautiful care of the home and are available immediately as they live right down the street. This rental is a short ride to dozens of great restaurants, beaches and resorts. We will definitely be back!

This was our first time to the big Island and this property far exceeded our expectation. From the moment you step foot into the house you feel at home. The house is immaculate, the ocean breeze is incredible, and every view out the back of the house is breathtaking. We had plans to go out for several dinners during our time at the property, but with the well stocked kitchen, the covered lanai, and the beautiful sunsets, there was little reason to leave. The snorkeling was great, the bedrooms were very comfortable (they do have ac) we could not have been happier - thanks for sharing this special place with us.

PUAKO PARADISE We have been in this fantastic house for a week, in May 2017. Everything is perfect and works well. The house is decorated greatly and has everything you need. I fall in love with the kitchen’s marble, it’s like a Claude Monet impressionist picture. You can find many books in the owner’s library with lovely pictures of Hawaii, about the history, the petroglyphs of Hawaii, or about the beginning of surfing. You can even find even special shoes for the water, or canoes to go along the coast. If you want to have a barbecue, you will find a big one fully equipped. The house is in sea front line, so the sunsets, everyday different, are the nicest films you can see. You can admire and swim between the turtles, especially at sunset, when they come to rest. Don’t disturb them; they are protected. The garden is perfect, with hammocks in the palm trees, balanced by the sweet Hawaiian breeze and with the singing of marvellous birds; it’s plenty of different kind of palm trees, primaries, mangos and bushes plenty of lovely flowers. This house has been a perfect paradise that we’ll always remember! Catherine and Miquel Serra Gomis – 71 Barcelona- Spain

We had two families staying in the house the end of July. Between the main house and the guest house, we had plenty of room for all of us. Given the constant exposure to sea elements, the house is in excellent condition. Our favorite feature was the back deck overlooking the ocean. You get to enjoy stunning views throughout the day. We saw sea turtles every morning in the tide pool area by the house. You will find restaurants and other resorts a short drive, as well as Hapuna beach, which is a gorgeous white sandy beach. We found the house manager and the owner to be very responsive and accommodating. If you are going to the Big Island, and you want to be on the water, I would highly recommend this house.

Hale Ama is Paradise...a happy welcome to feeling calm and centered, this tranquil gorgeous home was like easing into a warm bath. The entire residence is one with the magnificent ocean and nature's surroundings ; every room is beautifully and comfortably appointed incorporating the outdoors within- its great windows and large glass doors open the house to the light and sounds of the ocean landscape. The floor plan is smartly designed to accommodate large or small groups , with many indoor and outdoor "nooks" for private escapes . Just a few of the things that stood out for me: Hale Ama’s serene ocean views and its constant breezes , the peaceful quiet bedrooms with very comfortable beds/mattresses , each having their own attached modern bathrooms , screened windows if you choose to sleep with the sea breeze , ceiling fans galore, a fabulous cooks' kitchen and large counter/bar, a wonderful outdoor grill....the surrounding outside deck with its loungers and charming picnic table -- it was our favorite place to dine morning, noon and night ) the kayaks , bikes and many other beach toys provided us with many a memorable experience.... snorkeling side by side with the patient wise old sea turtles whom arrived daily on "our" beach like clockwork, to take in their morning nap in the sun ...biking 10-15 minutes to some of the most beautiful beaches in the world , the delicious morning smoothies and afternoon margaritas compliments of our own giving mango tree, an incredible massage done outside in a private corner of the deck overlooking the sea , and then especially meeting the kind and helpful caretaker and his wife along with the many new lovely local friends we met .... the Puako General Store, the Waimea fish market called Hale l'a Da Fish House , and oh my... the shaved ice!!! , dancing on the roof top of the Blue Dragon , lunches at Cafe Pesto ....and most of all , the spectacular ocean sunrises and sunsets with best friends on the deck of Hale Ama ! This home and location are the absolute perfect environment for a fun , inspiring and rejuvenating get-away... It is simply remarkable and I didn't want to leave...I highly recommend ! Thanks for the sweet memories !

We had a marvelous time in our vacation on the Big Island, and a great part of it was the beautiful house where we stayed. It is very modern, clean and beautiful. The internet speed was excellent. The rooms are large; the living room has a very high ceiling (we love high ceilings :) The view is incredible, and the nano-windows allow you to enjoy it to the maximum. We spotted turtles a few times, and once I saw a whale blowing, very exciting! Geographically it is also well located; it is on the west coast, which I think is the most convenient one, and not too far from attractions in the North and the attractions in the South of the island. We hope to travel back, and if we do, we would love to stay here again.

We love the Big Island and decided to spend Christmas there for the first time. We had rented a house on Puako Beach Road with our extended family and friends two years before and very much liked the area. I was therefore very pleased to find a rental at such a late date (August) in the very area we wanted to stay. Hale Alma is a beautifully constructed, high-end house with tasteful furniture and décor, accurately shown on the website. All 3 bedrooms in the main house have ocean views and en suite bathrooms. The media room can also serve as a fourth bedroom, as there is a bathroom just adjacent. In the guesthouse next to the main house, our friends had their own space including full kitchen and two bathrooms which allowed them to have privacy, peace, and quiet in the mornings when there was more commotion in the big house where the rest of us stayed. I think this would also be a perfect arrangement for visiting grandparents. What we enjoy about renting a house is the ability to cook for ourselves. We had many meals for our family, guests, and guests of guests, often cooking for 10 people, all of whom can all sit at the large wooden table made from a gorgeous tree trunk. We took advantage of the local fish market, the numerous farmers markets in Waimea and Hawi, and Asian food supplies at the market in Waikoloa. For Christmas dinner, we slow roasted a 15 lb pig leg purchased from a vender at the farmer’s market. It was butchered and cured just days before Christmas and it was delicious with the mango chutney we made for a side dish. My friend and I purchased some local flowers and made a large floral arrangement for the occasion. We found the kitchen to be well equipped, and, thankfully, there was an espresso maker as well as a standard coffee maker! At this time of year, whales are visible from the house and other locations around the island. Of course, large sea turtles are there all year round as well as other wildlife. We had fantastic walks along the coast in the tide pools, and explored many of the local beaches, snorkeling at numerous locations. The kids like to buggy board at Hapuna, a white, sandy beach. Bicycles suitable for short trips up or down the road are available for the asking. We never missed viewing the sunset from the lava rocks in front of the house. We could not have asked for a better holiday with our family and friends and look forward to returning to Hale Ama in the future.

We stayed at this lovely home Oct. 2009, Sept. 2012 and Oct. 2013 each for 2 weeks. The last 2 times we were there, our friends from Utah came and stayed with us for a week. We did fresh fish on the BBQ that was purchased at the local fish market which is caught every morning then brought to the market. We also enjoyed all of the fresh fruits and vegetables at the local farmers market which is located not far from the fish market. It is such a joy to cook in the gorgeous kitchen with all of its amenities and top of the line appliances. We loved eating our meals on the hand painted picnic table on the lanai. Every evening we would take our chairs to the beach with a glass of wine and enjoy the beautiful sunset. This beautiful Hawaiian home is very warm & inviting. We love the glass doors that open up at the back of the home and in the master bedroom to bring the “outside in”. It is custom decorated and not a detail was missed from the beautiful wood floors to the blue granite in the kitchen that resembles the ocean, wood banisters, built in cabinets and entertainment center along with inlaid bathroom counter tops. Each bathroom has its own walk-in shower. When showering in the master you have a view of the ocean-beautiful!! There were days that we didn’t even leave the property. It is so nice to relax on the lanai with a good book or just sit & look out at the expansive ocean. We snorkel, kayak, paddle board, walk along the beach & enjoy the many large turtles, ride bikes & just take walks along Puako Bay Dr.. It is such a peaceful area. There are many activities to do outside Puako which include the petroglyphs, Mauna Kea Observatory, Volcano National Park, coffee farms & waterfalls just to mention a few. The last two visits we rented a Harley motorcycle and spent the day just touring around the island-a treat for you motorcycle enthusiasts. If you are a church goer, there is a Catholic & a Protestant church on the street. We visited the Protestant one in 2012 & enjoyed hymns in Hawaiian & in English. Everyone was very friendly and welcoming. There is also a small market just up the street for your convenience. The pictures speak for themselves, a true dream vacation home. We are hoping to return in 2015 & bring our children & grandchildren to share in this paradise.

We stayed at the house during a November 2013 trip to the Big Island. Being residents of Los Angeles, it was an experience to see the lava fields, quite another world. It's where the black lava meets the gorgeous blue sea and the colors and fragrances of tropical flowers are all around. The house itself is amazing!!!! It has all the amenities you could need and then some. The owners have thought of everything to make guests feel comfortable and at home. There were three couples in our party and we all enjoyed on -suite bedrooms. My wife and I were fortunate enough to have stayed in the master suite - and oh what a fabulous view!!! The energy in the space is so wonderful - it is the perfect get-away and 'place to call home' for whatever brings you to this tropical heaven. Not your typical rental home - it's totally custom decorated with beautiful wood floors throughout, custom carved wood banisters and built-ins. I found certain features really special....like the beautiful kitchen granite that has blue swirling veins resembling the ocean waves and the glass doors on the ocean front of the house that slide completely back to let the warm sea breezes flow...it's clear that every inch of this home was planned with so much love and attention. We liked to walk and bike around the neighborhood- the atmosphere is tranquil and the neighborhood friendly and quiet. One of my favorite pastimes when I'm in Puako Bay Drive is just strolling down the palm-lined streets, listening to the sound of birds, enjoying the trade winds and feeling grateful to be in such a beautiful part of the Big Island. In the evenings when we weren't dining at home we would walk or drive to the nearby resorts for diner and entertainment. Golfing was also very popular with our group. There are some excellent courses in the area. As you can see from the pictures, the ocean is steps away and also the turtle conservatory area where we all enjoyed the tide pools and turtle watching. We dream of returning very soon and we always refer our friends. Aloha.

This home is to die for - absolutely gorgeous, comfortable and magnificent, all at the same time. The owners are kind and know all the greatest spots on the island, but chances are if you are staying at Hale Ama you won't want to leave. Beautiful sunsets and steps from the beach, which is great for strolling paddle boarding, swimming and snorkeling. Truly a magical place.
