It is difficult to describe Paradise Lost and found. Perhaps it is much like returning to one’s elementary school days and finding your long lost treasured keepsake safely tucked away in the lost and found box under the Principal’s office counter. This place is pure comfort, both in the beauty of the grounds and the livability of the cottage. Great location. Great hosts. Great found treasure.

It is also very clean. While it doesn’t face the ocean, the yard is gorgeous and very “Hawaiian” in nature. As other reviews have stated, the outdoor shower is a must. Smoky and Kim are lovely hosts who care very much about making your stay the best it can be. Look no further for the best accommodation on Hanalei Bay.

Our hosts made us feel right at home in their quiet and secluded guest house. The property is perfectly located as it is: 1) right on the beach at Hanalei Bay, one of the most gorgeous spots on one of the most gorgeous islands, and 2) a very short walk from "downtown" Hanalei, with its shops, markets, and restaurants. Recommendation: book at least a week. Heavenly!

This Hanalei bay beach front cottage is truly magnificent! Kim and Smoky are so welcoming and have truly thought of everything visitors might need or want when coming to north shore Kauai/Hanalei for a relaxing, comfortable, fun, truly ideal vacation. Steps away from beautiful Hanalei bay, this cottage is simply magical. Complete with an outdoor shower~w/hot water! ~ it was the only one my husband and I used the entire 9 days. Our family had the most wonderful time staying in your cottage in Hanalei. It was so easy to get back and forth from the beach. We ventured out of Hanalei a few times, but we always wondered why we had. You have everything right there! We hope to visit again soon.

From the minute we were booking our stay Smoky and Kim were incredibly easy to communicate with. The cottage was in an absolutely perfect location and also very private. It has easy access to the beach and also to all of the shops and restaurants of Hanalei. It was the most user friendly rental we have ever had the privilege of staying in by far. It has everything you need for your stay and is incredibly clean and very updated. We loved everything about this cottage and look forward to staying there again in the future!!

Our family really enjoyed our stay at the cottage. It's in a great location just down the street from the town of Hanalei and right next to the Hanalei Bay beach. The cottage was very clean and full of features to make our stay very comfortable. The outside shower was a big hit too! We hope to stay again in the future.

We were looking for something special for our 20th wedding anniversary/vow renewal. This was perfect! Comfortable, private, well ventilated, well stocked with everything you could possibly need. Our family of four stayed at Smoky and Kim's Hanalei guest cottage for four nights. The accommodations are superb. The cottage itself is spotless, comfortable and well-stocked. It was a perfect size for a family of four. The exterior shower is awesome., and was used every day. The highlight of this property, however, is its beautiful setting. Direct and private access to Hanalei Bay, and 2+miles of jaw-dropping shoreline. Words can't adequately convey the idyllic vibe of Smoky and Kim's cottage. Easily ranks as one of the most amazing vacation rentals our family has stayed in.

My wife and I spent our honeymoon at this property and felt extremely welcome the entirety of our stay.
The property has perfect access to the town of Hanalei and has beach access from the property.
We will definitely be returning here when we make our next trip back to Kauai!

Watch the Kauai scenes from The Descendants starring George Clooney and it will convey the exact atmosphere you will enjoy at this property (except the shenanigans). It is all sensational. One of us did not use the indoor shower because the outdoor shower is wonderful and would like to build one at home, but the other one of us believes Colorado is too cold for that.
We will definitely be back. Pro tip: make dinner reservations before you arrive — a couple of the best restaurants book a month out now!
Smoky and Kim are terrific hosts. The house itself is super clean and has everything you can imagine needing. In addition, it is very very private and secure.

Stones throw from the beach and a short stroll to Hanalei. With the popularity of the Hanalei beach be prepared for bit of traffic on the road in front of the cottage.

What a wonderful homey place, very nicely refurbished and has everything you need. We felt like part of the family. Smoky and Kim were welcoming from the first moment and so respectful of our privacy. We loved the proximity to the beach (best beach I think) and enjoyed floating on Hanalei bay with the noodles provided. We walked to town for dinner, enjoyed various farmers markets (best papaya I ever had) and fell into a relaxed pace for the week. We look forward to coming back.

This is a great cottage in the middle of the bay with everything exactly as described, if not better. It is newly remodeled and looks even better than the pictures. It is perfect for a family of 4. Kitchen is well stocked with everything you need to cook and there are plenty of extra supplies. The owner lives on property and is very accessible, helpful and friendly. She even allowed us to use her outside shower and let us keep luggage in the garage so that we could enjoy the beach on our last day! Above and beyond as hosts! Book early because they regularly fill up months ahead of time.

The transaction component of this stay was seem-less, gracious, and very helpful. Smoky was very attentive to our needs and generous. The cottage is exquisite; exceptionally clean, well- stocked, and very comfortable, with a real Hawaii character. We could hear the waves through our windows and the beach was just steps away. It was lovely to have lawn and pretty landscaping around us which invited our toddler to romp and explore. Hoping to return!

We have stayed in many places along Weke Road. Smoky & Kim's wonderful cottage is our new favorite. The location is phenomenal - direct access to the beach, 3 blocks to town, near the pavilion but cut off from noise or traffic distractions. No direct view of the ocean but that's a small thing when you can walk across the grass a short distance to the beach around the main house. The cottage is lovely, well stocked, and the screened patio was so comfortable that we seldom left the property. Full size washer & dryer, beautiful outdoor shower that we used exclusively, all the accessories you could want - this truly is paradise.

The Ohana is in a perfect location for beach and town access. This was important since we didn't have a rental car.
The house was updated, nicely furnished and well equipped.

The house got a nice breeze most of the day. It was a short walk to the beach and a pleasant walk into town. The view of the mountain from the kitchen table was jaw-dropping every day - whether sunny and bright or cloudy and fog covered. It was a delightful place to hang out and relax and the owners were friendly and gracious.

The location is as good as as it gets staying on the north side and in Hanalei. The direct beach access, lovely home, access to surf boards, boogie boards, beach chairs, cooler, etc, was so immensely valuable. It absolutely made our vacation. I prefer staying in this wonderful bay over a resort esp with the mountains, every time. Kim was absolutely amazing and so gracious in sharing her home. We hope to be back as soon as we can! Don’t have any doubt, this is where you want to be! It is the epitomey of a nice Hawaiian beach town.

It is hard to add to the other reviews that praise this property, but I will try. The location for this charming cottage is ideal for beach and walking to town. The cottage is immaculate and well stocked. The owners are lovely and truly care about their home and the comfort of the people who stay there. While there is no air conditioning, the fans do a great job and it cools down quite a bit at night. Not an issue at all. We are already talking about our next trip to Hanalei and our stay at Hanalei Cottage.

Our family of 4 just had the pleasure of staying in Hanalei at Smoky & Kim’s lovely cottage for the second time. We absolutely love everything about this rental - you are steps away from beautiful Hanalei bay and a short walk to shave ice and dinner or the grocery store in town. Smoky and Kim could not be more friendly or accommodating - they have everything you need for trips to beaches nearby or around the island. Chairs, boogie boards, cooler, beach mats are all provided. Washer/dryer is a huge bonus with kids. Outdoor shower. Screened in lanai. I could go on forever - It’s a dream! We can’t wait to go back.

Love to keep this property a secret...but I am sure the word is out. Fantastic location and the rental property is updated, well kept and inviting. Smokey and Kim went out of their way to ensure our trip went off without a hitch. They provided suggestions for activities, places to eat and things to see. We had a GREAT time here! The house is in great shape. It was renovated in recent years and it is clean and modern and has anything you'll need. The owners include beach chairs, boards, umbrellas, etc. with the house and everything is in good shape. Getting to the beach is super easy...walk out the door, through the back yard and pick a spot...about two minutes from door to ocean. Really incredible!!!

This is the most dreamy location imaginable, with the nicest hosts ever. I wouldn't consider staying anywhere else on Kauai. The cottage isn't super fancy but it's totally nice. It's all about the setting. Being able to walk through the yard and onto that beach - it's just perfection. We didn't even do that much on the island, as it was just too difficult to tear ourselves away. Enough said!

Smoky and Kim's place is just not to be replicated. Just a short walk to the beach, we enjoyed the sunset there almost every night of our stay, with the beach chairs (provided), and our beer/wine in a cooler (provided) on an ice pack (provided) before or after our boogie-board session (boards provided).
Kim and Smoky have made every effort to ensure the best possible experience, and we experienced that. The unit is spacious (just two of us this time), with all the expected facilities. The place was immaculately clean (a challenge in a tropical environment) and in every other way excellent.

There are times when things are so good you want to leave a negative review, because you know if you tell the truth, it will get out and it will be hard stay there again. This is one of those times.
In all honesty, this place is amazing. The cottage is super cute and well laid out. The outdoor shower was awesome. In our 10 night stay, I only used the indoor shower once (which was very nice, and my wife used every day).
The best part? The location. It is truly the best location you could imagine. On the beach in Hanalei, and a short stroll into town. I only got into the car when we were leaving Hanalei. Even when I wanted to switch out surfboards at the rental shop in town, it was close enough that I chose to walk, rather than driving.
And when you want to go to the beach? Just walk past the main house to the beach, that's it. Truly incredible!
This was probably the best and most relaxing vacation we have done, as it was so easy. There were no logistical challenges with surfing or going to the beach. the whole family doesn't need to be ready at the same time, there was no need to wait on each other.
I hope to come back many, many times!
ps, the hosts were amazing. They were attentive if we needed anything, but not seen if we didn't, truly the balance you wish for in a host.

Amazing hosts, lovely safe and secure property. Despite being at the corner of Aku & Weke Roads the place is very quiet. The folks in the big house had guests the almost the whole time we were there but we wouldn't have known if they hadn't mentioned it--so quiet! There's no ocean view, but the lanai faces a spectacular garden, and access to the beach is easy, a short walk around the side of the owner's home. Worth every penny for cleanliness, privacy and sheer aloha.

We had the BEST vacation at Kim and Smokey's beautiful beach cottage. This was our first vacation with kids and it could not have been more perfect! You will not find another property that is within footsteps to the beach and to downtown Hanalei. We have two kids under five, and the fact that we could WALK to the beach and to town without getting into the car was perfect. The cottage was recently remodeled and was much nicer than we were anticipating. There was beach towels, umbrellas, chairs, lots of kids toys for the beach.
Kim was extremely friendly and helpful! She even brought us fresh fruit and some other goodies a few days.
We had such a wonderful time at this beautiful piece of paradise. We didn't want to leave. We will definitely be coming back!

We enjoyed a quiet week at this lovely cottage located right on the beach at Hanalei. So pleasant to stroll across the lawn and straight into the ocean for a swim, followed by a trip to the very private outdoor shower. This roomy cottage is totally updated and furnished with every amenity you might wish. It's a short stroll to Hanalei town and all the good restaurants and shopping there. We loved it! Thank you, Kim Bayless, for the overflowing fruit bowl and fresh flowers greeting us on our arrival. Our stay couldn't have been more pleasant.

My wife and I stayed in the cottage twice. The first time was for a week in December and then again in May for 15 nights. We have our own home on Kauai but preferred to rent the cottage due to the location which is unparalleled. The cottage is very well appointed with a beautiful kitchen and all the amenities one would expect in a fine rental. The owners are two of the kindest and most gracious people I have had the pleasure of meeting. They truly care for our comfort and are quick to respond to any questions. We only used the room with the queen bed. The mattress was extremely comfortable and we especially like having an outdoor shower. Having rented homes on Kauai for over 15 years we recognize that beachfront in Hanalei is becoming harder and harder to find and having such a lovely cottage for an affordable price on the bay is such a blessing and gesture of kindness. The owners could surely charge more for this location. Thank you Smoky and Kim for your hospitality and we look forward to coming back again and again.
On a side not, in reading other reviews for this home, I am clueless as to why someone would give a lower rating because the weather was not nice. Shouldn't the review focus entirely on the home and the service provided by the owners. Just seems so unfair to blame a rental home for inclement weather...just sayin.

We spent a week in the cottage within the beachfront estate property on Weke Road to see our daughter get married in a small family ceremony on the large lawn facing the beach. Kim and Smoky Bayless were so gracious, kind and supportive in allowing us to use their gorgeous property to hold the wedding, making it a very special and memorable event. The cottage is newly updated with all the amenities and very comfortable and quiet, with a large screened-in lanai, perfect for relaxing after being at the beach or to wait out a rain squall. The large yard is absolutely stunning with private access to the beach and protected from the street by a gated stone wall. It is by far one of the most beautiful, comfortable places to stay in Hanalei. We fell in love with the place and can't wait to return.

Beautiful property located on the beach. A newly remodeled cottage sits behind the main house with a stunning view of the mountains. No need to bring beach chairs, towels or anything that is cumbersome as this is all generously supplied. Washer and Dryer make packing easy. The kitchen is well appointed if you want to cook.
Would I recommend this property YES.
The only reason I did not give it five stars is because the weather was quite wet, but this had nothing to do with the house.

My wife, 20mo old toddler and I enjoyed our stay very much. The home is perfectly located in the town, access to beach is perfect, the house itself is well maintained, comfortable and newly done inside. The owners, Kim & Smoky, made things very easy and are very friendly. We highly recommend this spot for couples and families of 4 or less. Recently remodeled beach cottage on an estate on the beach in Hanalei. We have rented numerous properties on Weke Road and this property was not only the best value but the best property. Well appointed Kitchen, all the beach stuff (chairs, towels, ...). The owners live on the property and are wonderful hosts. I mistakenly booked an extra day. Without asking Smokey, our host, refunded my 1 day overbooking. We will definitely stay here again!

We read all other reviews and agree that they capture what we too experienced. We would only add that Smoky was a perfect host! He left us with as much space and privacy as we wanted yet was always available to help or advise- and we got great advice.
This is in a great location and is well-supplied (eg kitchen). We were attracted to Hanalei by its beauty and somewhat more remote location and we found lots of places for adventure and exploration. We are hikers and swimmers and the setting is perfect for both.

This cottage is wonderful, not polished or high end. That was part of the charm. We cooked dinner several times and ate on the little lanai overlooking our little private yard. The location is perfect - walk to the fun restaurants and head out to the beach barefoot every night at sunset for a swim. Pure heaven. The property owner was terrific, too. We would go back again and again.
