The rental is a cute little funky beach house on the beach the view is amazing & loved waking up being able to have a beautiful morning view with our coffee! Sunsets were amazing too loved that we were close to town able to walk to town and we could bbq own food and hang out in the outdoor space! It definately needs some updating the furniture is very well worn…..it needs a little love & is due for a good cleaning which u get charged for a cleaning fee a large fee but hasn’t been deep cleaned in a while! Was a little difficult with booking and communication as it’s a 3rd party rental through a company only partially through the vrbo ! The fees are extreme for what it is because of the 3rd party booking but was a splurge for us as we wanted a house on the beach and it definately is that! Would stay again if the booking fees weren’t so much! Made good memories & enjoyed our time there with family!

We really enjoyed our two week stay at this property. It is located just minutes from dining, bars and shopping. The backyard is absolutely perfect and we enjoyed so much time on the lanai during our stay! The only thing we didn’t love was that it’s located on a major thoroughfare so backing out of the driveway to leave was challenging because it’s hard to see due to the angle of the driveway. Regardless we would definitely stay here again, it was the perfect place for our Hawaiian vacation!

Great property, and a very communicative host. We would happily stay again!

The location is EXCELLENT with great views of the ocean just out the back. Close to Kona… we walked there daily. Watched surfers and the home was a great base camp for all our adventures out. The lanai, patio and garden are lovely. this is the very best part of the home. The house is large enough and a very “beach house” vibe. The very small kitchen did have what we needed, but we only made light snacks, cocktails and coffee. We ate at restaurants and local food stops for the stay. The fridge was large and worked well. The electric range was difficult because the knobs have all been scrubbed where you can’t read the settings. But I can’t cook on electric anyway… so that may not be an issue for others. There is ceiling fan in the kitchen, but this was the hottest room in the place and wasn’t enough to cool it. The living room could use a A/C unit and possibly some heat blocking curtains in the kitchen for the afternoon sun? The bedroom unit air conditioners do work really well, so no issue sleeping and all the beds and bedding were very nice. We were disappointed with the layout of the home. The 3rd bedroom required you to exit the room through another person’s bedroom to leave. So very little privacy waiting for it to be clear to enter or exit that room. And the bathroom that is Jack in Jill to the living room has really zero privacy. It has one louvre door with gaps and paper thin so you know when it is occupied if you get my meaning - the door to the bedroom for

The place was nice. Thank goodness for the air conditioning it was much needed. The wooden chair on the porch was cracked on a piece and when I sat on it without noticing, the ring broke and pinched my leg. The stove had one burner not working. The sliding doors were difficult to slide without using both hands. But overall the place was pleasant and welcoming. We all (4 of us) had a great experience. Thanks for sharing this home.

The house was pretty cool. The beach was excellent and the sunsets from the property were amazing. The walk is doable to downtown but recommend driving if it’s too hot. Having air conditioning was a God send, while it didn’t cool the house completely it was still a relief. The hot tub is very dated and weathered. We opened it up to look in it but did not sit in it. The umbrella at the paved sitting area isn’t very useful as it is very small. There is a note on the description about there being ring cameras at the property and they are located on the lanai looking over the dining table and down the corridor looking directly at the outdoor shower. Kind of hard to let loose and relax with cameras pointed right at you. We didn’t have anything to hide so I guess no big deal. I did reach out via email to see about checking out at noon instead of 10 due to our flight time and never heard anything back. All in all I would recommend staying here. We feel the pros outweighed the cons, and the price was right.

Great location. For the price, they could give more attention to common daily items like ample toilet paper, etc.

Overall a great location! The house is shows it's age, but the location and being on the water overrides any shortcomings. Being right on the water, steps from the beach and walking distance to town was perfect. Great communication from the property manager. They quickly resolved any issues or questions we had. We would definitely stay in this location again!

We absolutely loved our stay at Honl's Beach Hale. It was beautiful, quiet and relaxing. The property had everything we needed during our stay. The management was great at communicating with us; each process to get house keys. We loved watching the ocean waves, the sunset, the sunrise, the boats and being so close to the ocean. The bedrooms stay cool at night with the window air conditioners and the beds were really comfortable. We highly recommend this property and will definitely stay there again if we return to Big Island.

Although we both grew up near the ocean, being steps from the waves lapping on the lava rocks was something special. Breakfast on the deck and cocktails toasting the setting sun were both very special. We even viewed whales breeching a few hundred yards offshore one morning. Located next to Honl's Beach, it was a short and easy stroll into town, yet close enough to golf courses, snorkeling tours and the amazing Volcanoes National Park. Our next visit to the Hawaiian Islands will once again require being steps from the sea.

We absolutely loved the Honl Beach House!! It reminded me of the old beach houses at home on Long Island. It was homey and comfortable!! Great vibes!!

House was in a great location with easy walk to beach access four houses down. AC Units in Bedrooms were a life saver, living room never cooled off even with fans and windows open, Unit would be greatly improved with AC in living room, guests had to stay in bedrooms to remain comfortable, or outside where it was cooler in shade then in living room.

This house gave us just what we wanted. Ocean front lounging and taking in of the views and waves. The house is serviceable and the management very responsive to questions and needs. Highly recommend this spot in paradise.

Great location. Very clean. Comfortable beds. Great lanai. Driveway could use a couple of mirrors for ease of turning into traffic. This is a very special, classic Hawaiian house. Would definitely return.

This property suited our adult family perfectly. We loved snorkeling right from the property and the outdoor shower made rinsing off so nice! We watched whales breaching one morning and enjoyed the quick walk into town. A classic beach house with a great location.

My family (husband, 2 teenagers, and a 7yo) and I enjoyed our stay here. The location on Ali'i Drive is very convenient. We walked to shopping and restaurants often. The ocean being right in your backyard is just amazing! The house was clean, and we appreciated the bodyboards to play with at the beaches. Most of the provided goggles and fins were broken, however, and we didn't realize it until we were trying to use them in the water. Minor pet peeve: no regular table salt provided in the house. They allowed us to check out an hour later than usual, with last minute notice. I am VERY appreciative of that! We would stay here again :)

Mostly our stay was all good, however the biggest issue was that one of the bedrooms was accessible only through one of the other bedrooms. So to use the bathroom in the middle of the night, you had to go into someone else's bedroom, waking them up. Otherwise it was mostly as advertised, right on the water, with a beautiful view.

We had a wonderful time communing with the ocean in this lovely place.

March 2022
We had a good experience with some very positive things to report, but also some issues that we had. The home was originally 1 bd/ 1 bath that was expanded at some point. There is no front door and I could never lock the sliding door (I had to lock the gate assess hoping no one would jump the fence to rob the place). Of note on the new floor plan: there were two rooms added with a bathroom in-between. The one bedroom is accessible through the kitchen but the other bedroom is accessible only through that bedroom (and bath) or through the original bedroom. It doesn't have any egress except through someone else's room. There were outlets that didn't work, we also blew a fuse when a room A/C unit was plugged in; we had ants in the kitchen one day... all kind of expected for an older beach home, but not at the premium price charged. We enjoyed the wonderful tide pools just beyond the back rock wall. The view was gorgeous and eating out on the covered patio was quite enjoyable. We made use of the outdoor shower (but kind of sharp rocky floor) and the covered spa. Overall a nice experience.

We enjoyed our stay here for its location. The view is spectacular, with beautiful sunsets. My husband enjoyed snorkeling right off the backyard. We made use of the hot tub (though it is not located on the patio as the pictures suggest). We really enjoyed the outdoor shower and the lanai. We spent much time outside. The house itself could use some work. It was clean enough, but it is just quite dated and not as nice as the price and description suggests. There is no central air and one A/C unit did not work. All in all though, we did enjoy our stay here.

October 2021
The good: Amazing view of the pacific in private setting Hot tub worked and was clean Home fully stocked with pots/pans/silverware/etc, bathroom supplies, towels, beach towels (beach chairs in rough shape) Walking into town was extremely convenient Late check out offered Grill worked and was nice to use The bad: Gate was broken and could not be locked from inside. Sliding door on the property but was tricky to lock when leaving.. gate being open gave us some nerves the first night or two Hot tub is next to the home by the gate, not on the patio by the ocean. The furniture on the patio at the ocean was not nearly as nice as in the pictures The AC did NOT work… at least not safely. The duct work to the outside was ripped from the wall so the exhaust and hot air stayed in the room.. we used them as fans. It was 85 during the day and 75 at night in September. The bedrooms never got under 80 even during the night. Sleep was possible but uncomfortable. The ocean breeze worked in the living room but not the bedrooms **I asked the property manager to correct this, even just one of them as soon as we got there but didn’t get a response on the matter The ugly: MICE. There were mice droppings in the kitchen all over the shelf when we got there. They were eating coffee grinds from previous guests. I cleaned that up and hoped for the best. The next 2 nights they got into all food we had out. I let the property manager know this, I asked to hold off on traps until we left. We stored our food in sealed containers and didn’t have a problem the last night. The exterminator was there setting traps as we left and spotted a few unaddressed holes for easy access in the living room. Dealing with this added a ton of anxiety to the trip. Overall: This is a property with so much potential, but it needs some TLC. Mice, gate issues and AC are unacceptable.. if the AC wasn’t in the description, sure it was manageable living without it. I would not have booked a place with no AC. If you are used to roughing it a bit, this place has charm and incredible sunsets.. For us, this place just added too much stress with the issues. I’m going with 3* because obviously this is not advertised as resort living.. and it certainly was not. Give this Honl’s beach hale the makeover it desperately needs!

The property is in a great location if you want to frequent the restaurants and shops on Ali’s Drive. We went on day trips around the island and Kona is a perfect starting point. One downfall was the air conditioning units did not keep the rooms cool at night. Two of them did not work at all. The addition of ceiling fans would help to move the air. Outside shower was utilized daily and the patio next to the ocean at sunset is a must. I would definitely recommend this property for a family to stay at.

You really feel like you are part of the ocean here. Sitting outside listening to the waves is the calmest I’ve been in a long time. Loved it and would stay again!

Very good house for a family of 8. Not too fancy, but the oceanfront view and breeze can't be topped. Convenient to Kona-kailua, with all the restaurants and shopping. Extremely comfortable, with bikes and snorkeling gear for your use. Only down-check was that only one of the bedrooms had working AC. One bedroom had no unit, and the third bedroom's ac was glitchy.
