Hale Me Ke Ki’ole ~ Puako Condo 101 - Welcome to one of the nicest and best-situated condos in the quaint, secluded village of Puako Beach. You're renting our home, not a hotel room or investment property. We welcome you as ohana (family) and our place is well stocked with everything you need for rest and relaxation. Enjoy the spirit of aloha in a historic Hawaiian community! A very private ground-floor end unit, with two lanais (decks) for extra living space.  Lots of louvered windows that encourage a cross breeze in the evenings, providing natural cooling (ceiling fans in each room help too). If extra cooling is needed, there are air conditioners in the living room and master bedroom. Bathrooms were freshly remodeled in April 2025 (including all new fixtures and marble walk-in showers); fresh paint throughout, and a fully equipped kitchen. We love to cook and we’ve left our appliances, utensils, and spices for you to use. Luxurious bedding, linens, and towels are provided. 500Mb high-speed internet service with WiFi coverage throughout. This unit is accessed from the outside via an open-air walkway, minimizing your contact with others. The large private side lanai is ideal for outdoor dining and has its own private BBQ.  A reserved parking spot is conveniently located right in front of the unit.

Puako is a historic community. As you drive past the 1856 Hokuloa Church, you will immediately feel like you have stepped back to a more relaxed time in old Hawaii. Quiet and away from the crush of tourists, there are only 170 homes along the two miles of Puako Beach Drive.  Surrounded by lush greenery and fruit trees, it’s a short walk to the friendly family-owned Puako General Store, where you can buy food, cold drinks, prepared meals, rent snorkeling and water gear, and more. Their homemade chocolate chip macadamia nut cookies are out of this world! Stand-Up Paddleboards and kayaks are available for rent down the street. Or relax by the beautiful pool, just a few steps from your front door. Ocean adventures (whale watching, snorkeling tours, and manta ray viewing excursions) are available at the Puako Boat Ramp, a short walk or drive down the street.

The beautiful, peaceful, sandy beach is right across the street. It’s perfect for snorkeling and is home to many honu (sea turtles). Wake up for the sunrise over Mauna Kea and see the honu sunning themselves on the rocks. We love to take our coffee over to the beach in the morning and watch the waves. Just a short walk across the street! And, from the same spot, watch the best sunset on the island. It’s magical. Puako reef is also recognized as one of the best scuba areas in all of Hawaii.  Close by is Beach 69, one of our favorites, and Hapuna Beach, named #1 Beach in America in 2021 and 2023! Great for swimming, snorkeling, and surfing if the weather is right. And you can get to them from Puako without having to get on the highway! Just to our north is the Mauna Kea Resort. Pull up to the security gate and ask for a free public access beach pass. You can also play golf, tennis, or pickle ball at the Mauna Kea, Mauna Lani, or Waikoloa Resorts. Or explore the ancient Puako petroglyph fields. All located just minutes away by car.

PLEASE NOTE: This unit has ONE dedicated parking space. Please consider renting a larger vehicle to accommodate all of your party. There is NO street parking allowed for vacation rentals according to local regulations. A second parking space within the building parking lot MAY be an option but cannot be guaranteed for the duration of your stay or designated until shortly before your arrival. IF available, the second parking space will be assessed an additional daily fee. Please inquire directly, shortly before your arrival, for further information and potential availability.

Please keep in mind that you will be a Guest in a very small and peaceful residential neighborhood. No smoking is allowed in the condo or common areas. Noise carries easily over quiet landscapes and near water. IBR asks that Guest and Guest’s children respect your neighbors' privacy, peace, and quiet between 9:00 p.m. and 8:00 a.m. Please refrain from using the lanais for calls, conversations, or viewing devices during these quiet hours.

This unit is on the ground floor and is accessed from the outside via an open air walkway minimizing your contact with others.

The Neighborhood:
Puako is still the only ocean front residential community along the Gold Coast/Kohala Coast of the Big Island nestled between the Mauna Lani Resort, Fairmont Orchid and Mauna Kea/Hapuna Resorts. Hapuna Beach State Park has earned the reputation of being one of Hawaii Island's finest beaches. It is the largest White Sands Beach on The Big Island and consistently rates on Top Ten lists internationally. Hapuna Beach offers some wonderful opportunities for swimming, bodysurfing, bodyboarding, sunbathing and snorkeling and is just a mile from Puako. You can even drive the back road to Hapuna Beach and not get on the Highway. Local shore fisherman can be seen daily enjoying the great reef fishing. Puako Beach Drive has no through access which keeps it virtually still undiscovered by many.

There are six separate "beach" accesses along this stretch of beach. Although there is not a tremendous amount of sand, there are tide pools and the extensive protected reef is remarkable. During low tide, small pools dot the entire coastline and these pools are filled with small sea life that make excellent areas to explore for all ages. If you enjoy shore diving, kayaking and snorkeling you can find a spot along this stretch of shoreline to enter the water. Offshore the reef is home to a wide variety of fish and many days you will see dolphins playing right from the shore. Enjoy the Whales who return each year to mate and give birth in the tropical warm waters during the winter months.

Getting Around:
A car is recommended for getting around the area and enjoying all that Hawaii Island has on offer.

Quiet and off the beaten path. Liked proximity to area resorts and beaches without all the noise. Unit was well stocked for all cooking needs. Lots of beach equipment available in the unit to use. Beds were comfortable and everything was clean. Booking staff communicated well. Didn’t get a chance to use the outdoor pool but looked private and inviting. Would definitely stay again.

Everything was tidy, and well stocked! The community is very friendly, especially the building manager! She made sure our stay was a pleasant one, and wasn't afraid to ask if we needed help with anything. Puako is a very beautiful location, and most of all it's peaceful and quiet, which is a huge plus! Mahalo!

Perfect place to stay without the resort price. Small, but had everything we needed, and 2 bathrooms was a definite plus. Kitchen well-stocked with tools, but bring your own water bottles. The beds were comfortable, but AC only in the master. Also supplied many of the water toys. Would rent again.

A really comfy and cozy rental. Very well stocked and right next to a little general store. The caretaker worked tirelessly to clean and maintain the area after a large rainstorm.

Loved the property - comfortable for a family if 5 with kids over the age of 16 and very well appointed. Everything you need is there - kitchen is great and perfect for meals. Unit is quiet and great sleep at night. There is a nice beach across the road and a short walk to beach 69 which is truly amazing. Look forward to coming back soon. Mahalo

The 3 bedroom property is very nice. Close to beaches and snorkeling. We had trouble getting into the property because the entry info had not been updated on VRBO. We tried the numbers that we had and no one answered. They knew about our late arrival. They apologized for the mistake. We had a great time after getting in.

We loved the quite neighborhood feeling and easy access to many beaches either by walking or driving. We are not "resort" people and really liked the homey feel of this unit. Very clean and well appointed with everything we needed. We are hoping to return next year with more of our family.

The condo was exactly as advertised. Made a great home base for our trip. Conveniently located near beaches and resorts. The supplied beach equipment (towels, chairs, umbrella, cooler, etc.) were very much appreciated. Marla was very responsive when we needed something during our stay.

We really enjoyed staying here. It’s very well set up for a family and easy to live in. Only a few minutes. Drive from Hapuna beach too. Very laid back condo block and relaxed people Recommend staying here if you want to explore the northern beaches

Thank you so much for sharing this delightful home with us. Puako is beautiful, with several small beaches to choose from in easy walking distance. We saw seven turtles on one of our morning walks! It was a morning tradition for us to visit one sleeping turtle friend at the beach access so my daughter could sing him a lullaby (The turtles will stay on the beach with you for a long time as long as you stay a respectful distance away). Our kids, ages 6 and 8 were doted on by the lovely people at the condo and at the general store next door and felt special and loved the whole time we were there. Fresh fruit was amazing, bananas, mangos, and lines growing all over the property. We loved that there were snorkels to borrow, and children's life jackets. Several great beaches so nearby (beach 69 was my favorite, but my son loved boogie boarding at Hapuna). The condo had everything we needed and my son declared it to be the "best condo here" because of the two lanai and the AC. This place was a slice of peace and paradise. Don't forget to step outside at night and be amazed by the stars!

The condo was basically as described. It is really two condos joined together. It is a little smaller than it seems in the pictures but not bad. Neither bathroom is joined to a master which was a little inconvenient. Access to snorkeling is one of the important things to us and there is great snorkeling there, but few if any ways to get into the water. The whole shoreline for miles is all lava. Also, be prepared for a lot of biting bugs. We went out the first night to watch the sunset and were all bit up for the rest of the trip and we were only out for about 15 minutes. Our timing was bad too as low tide was in the morning making it almost impossible to get into the water. Had we known that, we would not have chosen this location. Other than that, it was a nice place.

The condo easily accommodated 3 couples. The location in Puako was perfect for access to beaches. The kitchen had everything we needed for cooking. The two decks provided a sun or shade place to sit or eat. Beach towels and beach chairs were available for our use. There is an electric barbecue that is easy to use. The decor was very nice.Right next door is a store that has everything you need.
