Aloha! E komo mai. Welcome to Fern Cottage. Located across from Volcano Village, and just minutes from Hawaii Volcanoes National Park, we invite you to make our fully permitted house your home away from home during your next visit.

Like our other highly reviewed property (VRBO #403855), we have attempted to make Fern Cottage a perfect retreat for friends, couples, and small groups or families that wish to experience the peaceful Volcano lifestyle at its best. We also offer a wonderful retreat for kama'aina looking to get away. Comfortably nestled in the lush hapu'u fern and ʻōhi'a rainforest, you will find our location offers relaxing comfort and privacy all the while keeping you close to the variety nearby attractions the Big Island has to offer.

Our house is a cozy but spacious 900 sq ft 2 bed/1 bath house that sleeps 2-5 people comfortably. The high vaulted pine ceiling and wood floors naturally juxtapose with the green views of lush vegetation visible from all the numerous large windows throughout the house. A spacious covered half wrap-around deck greets you as you exit the house, and provides an excellent location to take in the views of the surrounding forest on our half acre property.

Both bedrooms have high-quality comfortable queen-size beds and a queen-size sleeper sofa is available to provide a third bed to accomodate your party's needs. The master bedroom has its own entry door to the covered porch. The main living/sleeping area is only accessible by stairs; therefore, we are unfortunately not accessible for visitors with disabilities that prevent the climbing of steps. For families looking to stay with us, we prefer there be at least one adult per child, if possible.

As with our other property, we strive to provide a warm and inviting stress-free yet affordable alternative to the big resorts. We hope you like what you see here and choose Hale Hubner Fern Cottage for you next visit to the Big Island. Mahalo!

We were very impressed with everything about Fern Cottage from Matt’s instructions to the property itself. I have stayed in a number of rental properties but I have never seen the thoughtfulness I found here. Kitchen drawers were labeled. Individual heaters in the bedrooms as well as heated mattress pads. A gas stove in the living room to take off the chill. The cottage is close to Volcano village and the park. The property is close to the back of the estate and surrounded by the forest so it is private in every aspect. I am sure we will back.

We loved staying here. It was close to everything we needed. Close proximity to volcano national park, close to Hilo, and close enough to south point. The house was perfect, everything we needed. Quiet and safe neighborhood. 👌

Stayed here 4 nights of a 16 night visit to taste the island at 4000 ft. It was fun although we hit a very rainy period. Home was warm and cozy and we managed the volcano visit and a round of golf. Had check in trouble (my fault for misplacing Instructions) but Matt came to the rescue with one phone call. Thanks.

We were barely there, just wanted a clean place to stay close to VNP and this fit the bill. Directions to the property and the gate were very clear. Nice open space and lots of towels/bedding etc. You can tell the area has a rainforest climate as it was slightly musty smelling. Very clean though! The entire town had a rainy damp feel to it.

We had a fantastic stay at Ohia Estates. The home was comfortable, clean, and nicely decorated. We appreciated the spaciousness of the kitchen and living room. I enjoyed the option to heat my side of the bed while my partner kept his side cool. Sitting on the deck enjoying the lush grounds and listening to the birds was so peaceful. We should have stayed here another day and would definitely return to this property. It's a great spot to stay while visiting Volcano National Park. Highly recommend staying here.

My husband and 5 year old daughter were with me. This is a cute, convenient and private cabin very close to Volcano National Park and Volcano Village (market and food trucks). We had a wonderful stay here! I will forewarn anyone who stays anywhere in this area that it is much colder and damp than in Kona on the coast. With that being said this place had it all to make it cozy and warm! Heat pads for the beds, propane stove in living room, electric wall fireplaces in bedrooms, and hot water. They have it figured out to make the best of the conditions there! I would recommend this place for sure!

We found the property description accurate and felt that a lot of care and consideration had been put into outfitting and decorating the house. It is close to the park and the town of Volcano, and is located on a forested lot that provides good privacy. A good choice if you wish to visit the area.

The house had everything we needed. It was in a great location for the National park and not too far from other areas of interest. It did rain every day but that was the beauty of it. When you traveled a little farther away from the rainforest it was sunny. Would definitely recommend this property to anyone visiting this area of the Big Island

Staying at Hake Hubner Fern Cottage was a real treat. It is a beautiful, comfortable cottage and I would not hesitate to recommend it to other travellers. We made use of the beach towels and cooler for a trip to Green Sand Beach and Black Sand Beach (turtles!). And we went hiking in Volcanoes National Park which is just down the street.

October 2023
This is a lovely property with easy access to everything. In particular we noted how clean it was and no scent of mildew, which is almost impossible to achieve in Volcano. The TV/media set up is a bit challenging to use, but Wi-Fi was great. For some reason, the housekeeper didn’t have us on her schedule, but she very agilely switched gears and got the place ready for us. All in all this is a good family stay in Volcano.

August 2023
Perfect quaint cottage for our one night stay after a long day in the park….great location, peaceful, loved the porch as the sounds came to life after sunset, grill made cooking dinner easy! My only suggestion would be a good fridge/freezer clean out (maybe some people eat other people’s food left behind?) and wipe down inside and out. Would stay here again!

We had a great stay at Hale Hubner! The proximity of the location to the park and Volcano Village was excellent while also being very quiet and private. The owner was very responsive to any questions we had. Perfect spot for families and was stocked with games and books that my daughter enjoyed. The kitchen was well equipped, including a dishwasher, which you don't always have when on catchment water. Heated mattress pads and faux fireplaces in the bedrooms were a nice touch!

We had a very relaxing stay while exploring Volcano National Park and the surrounding area. The house feels spatious and private. The kitchen has everything you need. The plentiful umbrellas were a nice and much appreciated touch as it rained during our stay. Note that the heat can take a bit to kick in but it didn't detract from our stay. We would definitely stay again!

Cute , comfortable house nestled in the ferns and trees. We enjoyed our stay at this property. It was hard to get out of the house by the 10 am check out, though. Next time we would stay another night to have more time to relax. We would do a staycation there again!

We came to see the volcanos, sadly they weren't erupting while we were here.... the property was great :-) Just remember it's going to rain here a lot! The location is excellent if you aren't planing to spend a lot of time in Kona. Volcano village has a few good places to eat, and very close by

The location was about ten minutes to the front gate of Volcano National Park. So, this was perfect. The house was clean and had a great porch that wrapped around the house with rocking chairs and tables for morning coffee. Close to a pizza place, tai food and a small store. We would stay again for sure.

March 2023
This was a delightful and cozy house in Volcano. The property owner was very helpful and communicative ahead of the stay, and I felt that I had all the information I needed for check-in and throughout the duration of the stay. The house itself is so cute and had everything my family of 3 needed. The pictures don't do justice to how cute the space is. weather was particularly rainy, so we enjoyed the board games and DVDs when we needed a break from the rain. I appreciated the washer/dryer that was available to guests, as we had very wet hiking gear that we were able to dry before heading back to the trails. Most importantly, the house was very clean. The sheets/blankets/towels were all clean and of good quality. The beds were comfortable. The kitchen had everything we needed for meals in the house. Really easy stay and we will absolutely stay again. I've already recommended to a friend! Thanks for sharing your house with my family.

Property was as advertised and was an enjoyable place to stay. We enjoyed sitting on the rocking chairs on the outside covered patio to relax and look at the private and lush yard. Owner quickly responded to my questions on a couple items -- for example, front door lock was not working, but the side door worked fine. The kitchen was well stocked for cooking.

June 2022
Wonderful cabin in the rain forest surrounded by ferns. We stayed a week as our home base to explore Volcano National Park, the Hilo area, the Puna area, and Kau district. The cabin had everything we needed for the week from being able to make a few meals to throwing in a load of laundry. All the beds were very comfortable after a full day exploring. We had a few minor questions and Matt was very prompt getting back to us. We really enjoyed having some board games to play at night to the sound of a few croqui frogs.

Bring food from Hilo or Kona to stock fridge and kitchen as there are no markets nearby and not much choice in dining or takeout.

May 2022
My wife and I spent a few nights at the place in Volcano and we had a blast. The temperature was a little cold in the evening but there are several heating systems including heated mattresses which helped a lot. The kitchen was great, there was a ton of cookware and supplies, so we enjoyed making a few breakfasts, dinners, and morning coffee’s during the time we had. The secluded home, the lush surrounding nature, the large porch, and the big windows made the house really unique and cozy. Would love to stay again if we every make it back to the area

We’ve stayed in dozen’s of houses around the world and Mat’s house was the most organized and best supplied we’d ever seen. It had everything. We had a hiccup the first night in that the gas had been turned off so we could turn on the stove (and it is cold!) but Mat figured out the problem the next morning. This is house perfect for a chill holiday. However, we wouldn’t recommend it for anyone working remotely. This is because the internet is about 500 kbps so video calls or streaming is not realistic. Normally, we would have deferred to a hotspot off our cellphone for wifi but the coverage is weak at the house at so it’s not any better than the wifi. We ended up having to reschedule most meetings or go to the park where the cellphone coverage is better.

January 2022
We enjoyed staying at this cozy cottage very much. It had everything we needed, but we especially enjoyed the front porch rockers and the comfortable beds. With such close proximity to VNP, we were able to get up at 4:45am and be close to the action. What a beautiful and clean place.! The owners have instructions on everything, including how to get there, and it was very helpful. Thank you!

August 2021
This is a cute and humble little house in a beautiful jungle setting, and priced right for what you get. There is a little bit of "off grid" going on here but that posed no issues or inconveniences. The owner is organized, hasn't overpriced it, and the house was clean and has everything you need for a perfect stay near the volcano. We were a little concerned about staying in Hawaii in the Summer with no air/conditioning but the climate is more like summer in the mountains than Summer in the jungle. We used the gas-fired stove at night and did not need A/C in the day. Of course the National Park is only a few minutes away and Hilo, even though a 4o minute drive away, made for a great day-trip of eating, shopping and visiting waterfalls.. Really a great house in a great location. We really loved it. Thanks.

Paul L.
August 2021
We really enjoyed this house situated right in the middle of the jungle. The house is very close to all Volcano attractions. The house has everything you need inside for a great vacation. We had a bit of troubles with the dishwasher but I believe the owners will fix it. We’ll return to the house next time. We reccomend it!

June 2021
We had such a wonderful stay! The owner has thought of everything to make your stay as comfortable and relaxing as possible! My husband and I have such stressful jobs, and right away we were able to relax and decompress. Excellent beds, beautiful surroundings, the coqui frogs and rain gently falling at night just made our stay so nice. We’ve never slept better! The weather was absolutely perfect! Our kids (2 and 4) loved the toys and games and everything at the cottage as well. We wish we would have booked a longer stay our time went too fast! Time flies when you’re having fun! It wa so great to get up early and enjoy the Volcano National Park before most of the visitors arrived. We hope to return again!

This home away from home was just perfect for the first part of our trip. We wanted to be close to Volcano National park as we had planned on exploring this area with our daughter. House was very comfortable with everything we needed. Would definitely stay again. Loved the jungle vibe with all the ferns trees.

October 2019
I didn't receive an email that contained the driving instructions or the entry codes. Matt was responsive when I requested this information but due to the time difference of where he lives, at one point, he was no longer responding to my messages. The email that I printed off from VRBO had the address incorrect so that confused my GPS. Once we got inside & settled in - everything seemed fine. Until I opened one of the kitchen drawers and got a blast of mold in my face! This happened every time I opened one of the lower kitchen cabinets or drawers. It was very strong and I would recommend the owner put mold mitigating packets in each drawer & cupboard. I realize that this is a situation that most homes in Volcano deal with but it's offensive. With the use of your dehumidifier, have the housekeeper open all the drawers / cupboards under the counter & leave them open until someone is going to check-in as that may help. The "electronics" were a bit of an issue because the "one remote" did not turn on the cable box as indicated. Catchment tank needed a filter change so when we turned on the shower faucet-brown water came out. I realize this was stirred up from the bottom of the tank & it cleared up fairly quickly but it might have made sense to have the local person meet the guy there so that she could turn on the water in the house to clear this as visitors would have been put off. The furnishings were comfortable, although a larger lamp on the end table (instead of the decorative hula lamp) would have made reading easier and a coffee table would have been nice. I read most of the reviews before renting and was aware that some people didn't sleep well on the beds but I figured that's a personal preference. We slept in the bedroom on the right side of the hall and I have to say, I did not sleep well on that mattress. It was like a rock for me. A king bed would have been nice. While the wall fireplaces are pretty, I would rather have a TV & baseboard heat that is set on low. The heated mattress pads were nice. I would also recommend putting a shade of some kind on the doorway entrance in the other bedroom. I hung my pareo up there because found it creepy that someone could look in at night. The front porch w/rocking chairs was delightful and having the little table & chairs to eat at was nice. What I really appreciated was being able to bring my little pup with us. Overall - good place!

October 2019
This house has everything you need. A big kitchen (although going out for diner in Volcano is no punishment either), a beautiful terrace and garden, nice beds and comfy sleeping rooms. The house is nice and quite and had a overall finish with great eye for detail. Especially all the electronic equipment, from dish washer to laundry facilities is an asset to your stay. We would definitely come back on a next visit. Thanks for everything Mike & Tara!

Natasha W.
September 2019
This was a great place to stay. So well stocked- especially for kids- books, toys and even a stool so the taps could be reached. Guest book was really informative. Comfortable beds, well stocked kitchen (even an Esky for day trips) like a home away from home. Thanks for the amazing experience.

Becky B.
August 2019
This home was the perfect way to experience the tropical side of the island. We loved the setting-super secluded and quiet. Falling asleep to the sound of rain and frogs was such a treat. It is the perfect location from which to explore the park and the coast. The house had everything we needed and was just the right size for our family of four. There were some great touches with some special high tech features, games for kids, and a wonderful wrap around porch. Our only issue was the porch light that is on a sensor so it stayed on all night while it was raining. There needs to be a way to control the light so someone sleeping on the sofa bed is able to sleep without interruption.

August 2019
This house is conveniently located outside of Volcanos National Park. It is very clean, and updated. We really enjoyed the quiet location. The surrounding area is so pretty with the huge ferns and lush vegetation! It had everything we needed to enjoy a short stay with our family of 4.

Dallas B.
August 2019
The tidy house on a verdant lot had everything our family with small kids needed & wanted for our stay on the Big Island. It's extremely convenient to Volcanoes National Park, as well as to Hilo and the black sand & green sand beaches along the south shore of the island. Matt was extraordinarily responsive to the couple of questions we did have. Our only complaint during the stay was that a hurricane skirted by while we were there, bringing rain & clouds -- but even then the toys & DVDs in the house made our washout morning still fun, and we had plenty of space to get the wiggles out.

June 2019
This was the perfect home for our visit to Volcano National Park. The house was beautiful and well stocked with everything you need. We hope to stay here again when we return to the Big Island.
