The Kihei Bay Surf is located in North Kihei across the street from the Whale Sanctuary, Kalepolepo Beach, and an ancient Hawaiian fishpond. ** Important Update: A construction project is scheduled for April through July 2024 (estimate). The work will consist of removal of the old roof and solar panels, and installation of the new roof and solar panels. Work is allowed Monday-Saturday from 8am-5pm. We love Kihei Bay Surf. We have stayed there numerous times. This was our 1st, and last, stay in this unit. Gosh I have a list of issues: the couch "cushions" squish to have you sitting on MAYBE 1/2" (we are of average size people 125# and 180#), the bed was awful. The first morning we woke up horribly sore so we removed the awful mattress topper pad, that did help. We could not open any of the louvered glass windows because they were all siliconed shut. The set above the front door was duct taped shut. Fancy. The bathroom exhaust fan wasn't working and we discovered it was unplugged. We are guessing it was unplugged because it runs so horribly noisy. The bathroom sink stopper didn't work so we could not soak our bathing suits. We ran out of hot water every day because there it is only a 12 gal. hot water tank in the unit. The ceiling fan in the living room adjusted it's own speed and because there is no ladder there was nothing we could do about it. A drawer in the living room dresser would not stay shut. I do have pictures to document all of these issues and more.

Before I get into why I’m giving them 5 stars I need to let you know that the garbage disposal wasn’t working right. Don’t use it until maui rentals confirms it’s been fixed. Otherwise, you will be very startled. Ok, on to the fun part…. I love how quickly this place responds to my questions. I had so many concerns because of the fires. The room was well stocked with PLENTY of towels, which is always a plus. The kitchen is also fully stocked with everything you need. There were also two beach chairs. It’s right across the street from the fish pond which is perfect for sunsets. It felt like It took no more than 3 minutes to walk to the sand from our room. I had ordered groceries from safeway and was expecting them to be on the porch when I landed. I was pleasantly surprised to see that someone had put all my groceries away for me in my room. To whoever did that, or whoever let safeway in, THANK YOU. My flight was delayed and I was worried that my sons birthday cake would melt. The only thing that melted was my heart when I found it in the fridge. Bed is very comfortable, it was a very nice stay. If you have any issues with the room all it takes is one text and someone will respond.

Many blogs recommend staying in Kihei but I wouldn’t stay in this area again. Kihei Bay Rentals is opposite the whale conservation centre and where turtles come to sun themselves every morning. The beaches are everyone’s favourite viewing spot for the sunset. There are parks with bbqs and I saw a court for paddle ball. Yet, there are no walkable amenities around Kihei like restaurants, shops, petrol station etc. If you want that walkable vibe of shops and restaurants and other necessities stay in Paia.
Unless you’re walking on the beach, you can’t go for a walk around Kihei. The footpath runs out and you either have to cross the road or walk on the narrow road.
The unit was ok. For someone with sensitive skin it wasn’t clean enough and had me break out in eczema which I haven’t had for two years. Eg- doing yoga on the carpet I was covered in sand indicating the carpet was not thoroughly vacuumed. During my yoga I saw half a pack of lollies, lipgloss and other things under the couch and bed which shows evidence of inadequate cleaning. Each time I would sit or lie on the couch I got bitten & an eczema breakout. You might be okay if you’re not allergic like me.
The towels were good so I used them to cover the floor and couch. The kitchen has everything including blender, rice cooker. you’ll have to bring condiments and oil if you want to cook or flavour your food. The bed was too soft, it left a dent of me despite being 60kg. The AC was so loud I used earplugs to sleep.

There were two big issues. The first was with the AC. I didn't think we would even need AC but the unit was so stuffy and hot when we arrived. The AC unit made a terrible noise that was not just normal AC sound. The bed was also so so uncomfortable. I barely slept the first night between the bed and the loud AC. We arrived after hours so they were not available until morning. When I reached out to the agency, they bought a quality memory foam mattress topper that helped a lot. They could not fix the AC so they brought in a portable window unit. The windows did not open so they used the sliding door instead and taped off the open area with cardboard so we were no longer able to use the balcony. It is a short walk to a fun little beach with lots of seat turtles. The view is really just road and the cars are pretty loud for such a small street. The whole place was dark and could use some sheer curtains to allow more natural light in and privacy during the day as well as better black out curtains. It was a very uncomfortable stay for us and I regret booking this place. However, they were very kind and responsive and did their best to accommodate our needs.The issues we had were things I would expect to be dealt with before the guests arrive though.
