This was our fifth October stay at Kona Makai and the fourth in a different unit. This unit has the nicest decor, large screen TVs in both the living and bedrooms, strong WiFi, tiled floor throughout including on both lanais, ceiling fans in all living areas, the best one being above the main lanai where we spent most of our time, AC units in both the living area and main bedroom, neither of which we needed to use due to a good flow of air through the unit entrance and lanai(s) doors and the windows above the loft, and all the necessary kitchen items one might need. The only appliance missing was an oven should an occupant need one. The only shortcomings (2) we felt were the lanai seating which has a set of 4 high bar chairs with accompanying high table. The chairs were difficult to get in and out of and were very uncomfortable. The other was the small washing machine which limited how much could be washed so required multiple washes. Other than that, the unit's north facing location is the best as the sun doesn't shine on the lanai allowing one to stay somewhat cool on 80 degree plus days. Another benefit is the palm tree next to the south facing lanai which provides some privacy from the Sea Cliff neighbors. Still the best unit we have stayed in at Kona Makai and the best loft unit.

The property was as described. Easy to find. Beautiful setting. Property was extremely nice. It was a little busy getting in and out of the property because the Ironman World Championship was happening the day after we left, so lots of extra runners and bicyclists. During normal times in sure it's easier to get in and out. Would use this place again.

Rob & Darlene were amazing hosts who provided my friend and I with the perfect oasis to escape from work and rest. The location is right by downtown Kona, but just enough away to be quiet, with amazing views, especially by the pool area.

We would stay here at the Kona Makai again. Many ammenities at this location were excelent.
The condo was clean and modern.
It had all the cooking and dining utensils you would ever want.
The grounds were perfectly manicured
Nice pool area with gas barbecue
A great area near the pool to sit and watch amazing sunsets with waves breaking near your feet.
A well equipped workout area.
Very quiet and peaceful (I think there are mostly full-time tenants with a few rental condos)
Exceptional views from both lanis.
A spacious loft with a queen sized bed and a desk area.
A nice bedroom with a king sized bed
and finally, the bathroom that was modern with a nice shower.
Cons:
It is a bit of a walk to resteraunts and shopping. We are seniors and it is a walk up three floors to the condo. We considdered the trade off of a higher floor totally worth it for the view.
We would have rented a car when we arrived in Kona if we had known the amount if walking we would be doing. To be fair there is a very nice trolly system to get around but the times we could grab it never seemed to line up with what we were doing. Uber did not show twice.
Also, there is so much beauty within driving distance. We went back to the airport and rented a car eventually and I recomend doing that.
I only gave communication with management 4 stars because we had no real contact with them. This was fine with us because they really covered all the bases perfectly and there were no problems.

Condo was very nice w great views! And updated! Huge plus! Condo has everything you need! Master bed was very comfortable. The condo was well put together. The property itself is lush and in immaculate condition.
However, the residents are VERY fickle and very big on people being quiet in the pool and on the grounds. I understand that there shouldn't be screaming or disruptive behavior. But being grown adults (in our 50's) and being told on your first day in Hawaii and seeing a pod of dolphins right in front of you, to keep it down because you're being too loud being excited?? It was 7:30 am, and quiet time ends at 8. My bad I guess.
Then being told not to take our ceramic coffee cups to the oceanfront lounge chairs to watch the ocean in the morning. Because they may topple on the table top and break and shatter and hurt someone?? Ok???
And being given the "stink eye". Lots of rules and I guess the residents are possessive. I understand to a degree, but come on, it's Hawaii and people are excited to be on vacation! Families w children go there and residents were very obvious that they aren't fond of children and visitors.
Other than that, it's beautiful. It's lush. It's clean. Condo owner was great and so easy and accommodating and kind. And again, the condo was beautiful!!!

The unit was clean, well appointed, and spacious enough for our family of 4. We really enjoyed the easy access to the beach, and fishing/snorkeling. The pool and cabana are are nice but more of a relaxing environment than playful. The stairs to the loft don't have railings so probably not suited for little children. Otherwise we had a great time!

This condo was amazing! The owners thought of everything to help their guests have a marvelous stay. The kitchen was beautiful and well stocked with dishes, etc. The washer and dryer were very much appreciated. Beach towels, extra bath towels, plenty of paper products, Toiletries, all were supplied. Fans in the bedrooms, the great room and the lanai worked well and gave a nice cross breeze through the condo. There were also beach chairs and snorkel equipment...better than I imagined. Parking was very easy, and sometimes in the shade under the tennis courts. Great location too! The best part was sitting on the lanai each morning enjoying breakfast, and down and the grill area in the evening enjoying the sunset! Would definitely return! Thanks so much!

Delightful! We loved the pool and the lush grounds (so many tropical plants!). The lanai was wonderful, we especially appreciated the overhead fan out there. Great location about a 20 min walk, slightly downhill, to Kona town. Hosts were communicative. Would absolutely stay again.

We have been staying at the Kona Makai for the last 20 years (in various units). If you are looking for a place to party, this isn’t it.
It’s a very quiet complex right on the ocean.
The grounds are very well maintained, I love their landscaping.
This unit has been updated and nicely furnished. The kitchen has all the necessities including an ice maker. The beds were comfortable. We had plenty of towels and chairs for the beach.
We made use of the loft. It stayed comfortable between the overhead and stand-alone fan.
It’s on the 3rd floor with no elevator - if you can handle stairs, it’s well worth it.

The cons: being on the 3rd floor does get hot, the bed was a bit hard and my stay was too short. We really enjoyed our stay here. The condo was very clean and up to date and had everything we needed. We didn't even have to use the AC because of the fans and cross breezes through the lanais. The grounds are gorgeous and the pool and lounge areas have excellent views of the ocean and sunsets. Thank you so much for allowing us to stay in your wonderful place. The owner sent us to the wrong apartment initially. After climbing three floors up, that apartment was occupied. We could not call the owner directly because we did not have an international calling plan and the owner lives in Canada. Once we got the correct info from the owner we were able to get in. The unit was nice, but they don't want you using the air conditioning because of cost. The location worked well for us as we were visiting locations in Kona for the first three days.

We were only in Kona for a short time so did not get to use all the well-stocked amenities provided in this condo, but it was perfect for us. Cannot think of anything else we would have needed! Location was great, property and grounds were well maintained, and the lounge chairs right by the coastline were a wonderful place enjoy the ocean. We are certainly hoping to stay in this condo again :)

Great ocean view unit on ocean front property. Pool is right on the ocean front providing excellent views of surf. Unit has AC although fans and ocean breeze made it unnecessary for our stay. Beach chairs, mats, beach umbrella and tennis rackets are provided. Tennis courts on property. Nice furnishings throughout made for an excellent stay. Would recommend and would definitely rent again.

My husband and I enjoyed our stay at Kona Makai 3-303. The space was clean and nicely decorated. We lightly used the kitchen and didn’t cook, but it was well stocked. We used the beach chairs and umbrella which was a nice bonus for a day at the beach. The main downtown area is a mile walk and there is a HIBike stop nearby. We both walked and used the bikes to go downtown for dinners and watching the sunset. Overall, we enjoyed our stay and would stay again.

The property was great and super close to a lot of the shops. Being right on the oceanfront was a treat. We saw beautiful sunsets here. There were some additional equipment for us to use such as snorkel fins and beach chairs which were super thoughtful and useful. It was a nice condominium, clean, nice view, beautiful landscaping. Listening to Jack hammers all day made it a little difficult to enjoy the lanai as there was work going on directly across from us. It was a little farther from kona than we expected, older people may find 2 miles a bit farther than they can walk to enjoy downtown.

We highly recommend booking! Communication with Robert was fast and easy. The rental was very clean and comfortable. It was so nice to be able to borrow chairs, snorkeling equipment, and a boogie board! The location is great too!

The condo was exactly what we needed. You can see the ocean from both lanais. The pool/bbq area has a beautiful view. We never swam or bbq but would have enjoyed the area if we were staying longer. The room was clean & had plenty of towels (that’s always one of my pet peeves when there’s only a couple). The location was great, close to downtown Kona & just 2ish hours from Hilo & the volcano. My only thing I will say is if you have littles (toddler age) this might not be the condo for you just because of the stairs to the loft. There’s a handrail on one side and open on the other side (it’s in the pictures) it was a non issue for us since we just brought our 16 yr old but if we had our 4 & 2 yr old it would have stressed me out. The AC & fans kept the room nice and cool, I would for sure stay again.

The condo is relatively clean, but too many little issues created a hassle with my stay. Remote controls (3) not working along with the TV cable box in the bedroom inoperable. Although the absentee owner/host reponded quickly. This made for an big inconvenience for my rather short vacation.
The owner needs someone checking things between stays and this obviously was not done.

This condo is in a perfect location! Walking distance to many restaurants and beaches. It is very well equipped and the view is incredible. When we arrived the countertops had not been wiped down very well and the pots, pans and dishes had not been cleaned thoroughly. There also appears to be an ant problem. These things didn’t effect the overall quality of our stay just a little inconvenience and I would definitely recommend.

Stayed for 12 days during a diving trip and the condo was just what we needed - easy parking, comfortable bed, close proximity to our destinations. Would stay here again.

This is a great spot! The condo is as listed- the layout is lovely, the kitchen is fully equipped, and the bed is comfortable. There is no oven in the condo, but there is a smaller portable one. The only thing of note is that this is a quiet property. It was great for a couple but might not be great for a family with kids.

Beautiful, very clean-updated property. Well stocked. Lovely grounds. Nice hot tub, pool. Great location to watch the sunset and get around the Island. Would 100% book again.
Two items that would help guests. The shower does not get hot enough. The safety on the shower handle is set to low. The showers are warm but not hot. By no means cold but we prefer a warmer shower. One other thing. We had no plans to do our own laundry on property. Would have helped more and washed more loads at check out but only had the one box of detergent. It seems stocking a large detergent would make it easier for guests to help out.

My kids and I thought the property was amazing. Super comfortable. Perfect for 4 people. The only downside were how high the ceilings are in regards to how hot and humid it gets in Kona. Thankfully it cools down just enough through the night. We would book this condo again.

Quiet. Clean and updated/contemporary. Nice variety of Big Island books. Great internet connection (234 Mbps upload and 20.1 Mbps download).
Nice mattresses.
Upstairs in the loft can get a little hot in the late afternoon in August. Buy bottled water.

We really enjoyed our stay at Kona Makai! The property is gorgeous and well-organized for vacation rentals. The lava rocks in front of the pool had an incredible view of the sunset in July. The condo itself was well-maintained and updated. I was worried the small AC unit wouldn't cool down the loft area enough, but it was more than what we needed to have a restful night's sleep. The complex is far enough outside of town that it's super quiet, but close enough that you can still get anywhere you want to be quickly. Fast response times from the host, and a wonderful start to our time on the Big Island! I would definitely stay again.
