We’ve been to Hawaii more than a dozen times, and this condo is definitely a find, and a value. The unit is well maintained/upgraded, and very tastefully decorated. The bed is very comfortable. The furniture and the kitchen appliances seem new. The kitchen is well stocked with cookware in good condition. Even the beach chairs and umbrella are quality.
The Makahuena complex itself is a bit weathered, and pretty bare-bones, but the grounds are nicely maintained. There seems to be a mix of mainly visitors with some residents. The complex is situated on beautiful lava cliffs that the waves crash against endlessly.
If you come, make sure to visit Poipu beach at sunset to watch the Green Sea Turtles haul themselves onto shore for the night.

Wonderful property!! So spacious, stylish, and comfortable. No a/c (very typical for hawaiian homes) but it was never a problem for our family. They had multiple fans in the rooms AND effective ceiling fans. There was never any direct sun into the home which kept the home at an easy temp all day. Over all it was a great place to stay!

We loved Kauai and had a great stay at this spacious and beautiful condo. Wonderful location and it had everything we needed. We enjoyed sitting out on the balcony spotting whales. I didn’t give this condo five stars because the beds were not comfortable, which impacted our sleep for the 9 nights we were here. We’d definitely recommend the purchase of new beds given the price point of a nightly stay at this condo. I’d also suggest a kettle for the kitchen. Thank you!

The views from the complex are some of the best we saw while here- watched whales in the morning and evening and then took a quick drive down to the beach to witness seals and turtles on the shore. Had a great time snorkeling! Would highly recommend this unit to anyone!

This unit is well stocked a great layout and clean - you will not be disappointed! It is accessible to great beaches within walking distance and it is also a great location if you want to drive and explore other parts of the island without spending all your time in your vehicle. The complex is safe and other guests and condo owners are friendly. If you want to get advice on what to do on the island just chat to anyone in the hot tub - it is a great way to hear honest reviews and get recommendations on excursions and activities.

We stayed in Rodney's condo for 4 nights in January 2022. We realized that while we received "check in" details, when we arrived, we noticed we hadn't received the information needed to get into the condo. I had to make a couple of phone calls to the property manager, who quickly gave me the information that was needed so that we could gain access. That was really the only snafu that we encountered. The condo was exactly as advertised. The beds were super comfortable, and it had a great deal of space where we could all spread out and enjoy our stay. The condo does not have air conditioning, so we kept the blinds shut in the morning due to the morning sun and left all windows and fans going at night...it was very comfortable. Thank you for allowing us to use your gorgeous property! p.s. make sure to take a walk down past the gate in the AM and watch the sea turtles! Totally amazing!

This host had amazing communication! Before we arrived he informed us of entry information. When we checked in, there was a packet of information about the surrounding area and the island.
The condo was beautiful and close to Poipu Beach Park. We had great kitchen equipment, and lots of beach supplies.
The only disadvantage was my son would have liked air conditioning. I really didn’t mind being without it. Great place to stay!

The condo was exactly what we wanted. Close to the beach, a good space for my family of 6. The pool and hot tub were enjoyed by all of us daily after long days of adventures. We had a nice stay at this condo, nothing bad just ok. I read the description and reviews and knew there was no ac, I thought we would be ok, but we were hot. After being gone all day, and closing up the windows as instructed, it was stuffy. It was difficult to cool the main bedroom down, even with all the fans provided.
We found the condo to be pretty clean but the floors were filthy. We had to keep our socks or shoes on.
We enjoyed sitting on the lanai for breakfast and for a glass of wine at night and listen to the crashing waves.
It is well located to drive easily to the beaches or places to eat. The complex is aging but the grounds are very well taken care of.

The unit was located near the beaches but we took a car as Poipu Beach was farther.The unit had everything you needed. The TV was no that easy to work and had to ask for help.The pool/spa was very nicely tiled. They were nice and got some regular size beach chairs
for those of us that need easy access.We brought supplies as there is not a lot of grocery shopping or resturants around..but it depends on your diet. Keokis is always good and we tried a new place Lillikai near the harbor area.The price quoted was higher

Communication was top notch from start to finish. Place was great. We didn’t rent a car for our stay and probably should have. The walk to the beach is about 15 minutes and carrying stuff for the day at the beach was sometimes challenging. The condo was nice. One of the twin beds was super squeaky, so every time my son moved, it woke my daughter. The TV in the master wasn’t working, but that was fine. The first night there, we went to the hot tub, but it was cold - went back the next night and it was fixed and hot. Really enjoyed the entire experience and would recommend.

The pictures do not do this property any justice. The views from the lanai are beautiful. Quick walk to numerous lookouts around the property and you will not be disappointed. The home is spacious and nicely decorated. We were there for short trip so we didn't eat in but from what we saw, the home had all the utensils and appliances one would need. The property was well maintained and the neighbors were wonderful. Novella is who we worked with for this trip and she was a amazing! She sent me a text to check in on us and see if we needed anything. Prior to our arrival, I had a great time chatting with her on the phone. Overall a great experience and we will definitely be back.

The condo is nice & has a great balcony over the courtyard & a beautiful ocean view.
I would suggest some hooks on the balcony for wet things & maybe a small smart tv for the 2nd bedroom. We watched late night movies on a laptop.
I'm glad we didn't go in the heat of summer because we were all quite hot the whole time. There's a nice breeze but us Coloradoans would have liked a little more coolness!

We had a really nice stay in Poipu at the end of a two week trip in the islands. The condo is well-stocked and very clean. The balcony is so nice to sit at and enjoy the view. While we didn't use them, the complex's pool and tennis courts looked great. We loved the location, too - we were able to hike along the coast right from our unit.
I am rating this unit a three for a few reasons. First of all, there were a few things broken in the unit when we arrived, including the television in the master bedroom that wouldn't turn on as well as a window in the master bedroom with a broken spring that wouldn't stay open without the provided stick. It addition, the condo was very hard to cool down. Now, we did stay in July, so other times of year may be better, but it is just very hard to get airflow through the unit even with fans and all the windows open. Also, the unit has giant, beautiful windows facing the main courtyard of the complex from both the master bedroom and the living room. This is great during the day! It isn't as great when the sun goes down because everyone in the complex can see in. In order to get any airflow at all, you have to keep the windows open. However, the window coverings in the unit didn't allow airflow, so we had to leave them open. It left us with no privacy in the evenings.
We also had a poor experience with the property manager, which I am hoping was just with us. We got an email the day before we were arriving thanking us for our stay and giving us check-out instructions for the next day. I called to confirm everything and was told it was sent by mistake. Totally fine. We arrived at the unit from another location on Kauai. We were out on a boat tour on the north shore in the morning, so we moseyed along the coast coming south until we could check in at 4pm. When we arrived at the unit, we were all tired and in need of a shower, but the cleaning crew had just gotten there. I called the property manager, and she told me that she thought we were not arriving until 6pm, which I never told her. We were not allowed to go into the unit so that it could be cleaned. Her only offer of help was to let us leave our bags out on the balcony.

We had a nice stay here for 6 nights. It felt just like home. The kitchen has pots and pans we needed for cooking; plenty of utensils, plates, etc. it’s like my own kitchen. There’s no aircondition but it didn’t bother us. The electric fan was good enough. Maybe it would be an inconvenience for those who are checking-in in the summer months. The location of the condo is good, a short walk to Poipu Park. We are family of 6, the one thing that I wish they have is a big sofa bed. It’s a bit small for 2 but we made it work. I would recommend this condo to friends and family for sure.

The two of us along with our son and daughter-in-law greatly enjoyed our stay at Makahuena 1203. The layout of the unit was very good. We found ample closet and drawer space for storing our stuff. Furnishings and appliances were new and very functional. Ample good quality dishes, glasses, cups, utensils, and cooking gear were available. The bathrooms and especially the showers were great. The owners provided a number of items for beach and ocean entertainment. The lanai provided a nice spot to relax and enjoy the view of the Pacific.
Unfortunately, the pool water was a bit cold making it difficult to spend much time in the water. The jacuzzi ceased functioning after the second day. This was disappointing.
I would recommend increasing toilet paper and Kleenex supplies commensurate with rental duration and number of people.

This was our second time at this condo and we had another fabulous trip. We love the pool and hot tub and the convenience of the location. The condo suits our group of 6 perfectly. We ate all of our meals at the condo and the kitchen had every appliance and utensil needed for a variety of meals. Watching the whales from the lanai every morning is always a highlight for me! I would definitely recommend this condo.

The Makahuena grounds were beautiful and quiet, and it was a short walk to everywhere we wanted to go....Shipwrecks, Brennecke's Beach, Waiohai Beach etc.... This was a really great condo on Kauai! Great layout and plenty of space. Condo is in great condition, furniture was great, new bathrooms, kitchen was well appointed, and the balcony was super. Amazing views of the ocean with a number of whales sighted while we were there. Condo has great location in the complex: close to the pool entrance, grills, and parking. Has beach chairs, umbrellas, etc. to enjoy on the beach. The broader Poipu Kai area that this condo is part of is also really nice. Peaceful, quiet roads, and walking/running trails. Shops and restaurants are close by as well.
Our bar is pretty high so our 4 star is probably a 5 star for most. The only two items that made it 4 stars were it did not have A/C and it did not have direct beach access. Both of these were known and are preferences for our family that may not be as relevant for others. We were there in Dec so the lack of AC was not as big of an issue but it was still warm and the beach was a short (~10min) walk away. The beach walk wasn't as big of an issue as I expected as it was a nice little stroll to both beaches. Would recommend bringing a tote bag to help carry towels, sunscreen, and other items for the walk. You can also drive and it is a very short drive and there is ample parking at the beaches. During peak season parking will fill up by late morning. We would recommend this condo and would not hesitate to stay here again on Kauai.

This spot is a great location in Poipu, quiet and beautiful. Our condo, 1203 was recently renovated in 2011, the bathroom showers need a little work is all. The condo was fully equipped with beach chairs, towels, umbrellas, snorkels, boogie boards, sand toys, tennis rackets, balls, water noodles the list goes on and on, if you rent this unit you need not bring a anything. The kitchen has all the utensils you would find in your own home. Our unit had a nice view of the ocean, we would whale watch every morning, incredible site to see the humpbacks breaching! The sunsets from the point at this condo complex were beautiful. The owners of this unit were very reachable, helpful and friendly. The outside of the Makahuena needs a little tender loving care (outside paint job) the grounds are meticulously kept, the swimming pool and hot tub are small but also meticulously kept and not ever busy. Shipwreck Beach, Brennecke Beach, Poipu Beach are all within walking distance! Shipwreck Beach is a great spot to Boogie Board for the experienced,and there you will find cliff jumpers! There is also an incredible walk (2 miles) to Gilligans Beach and beyond. I highly recommend this walk. Poipu Beach is great for the beginner Boogie Boarder, this beach has something for everyone and it is right next to the Sheraton, avoid eating lunch there though, very expensive, we paid over $200 for seven (7) sandwiches!! Brennecke Beach, is a good spot to snorkel, boogie board etc. It too has something for everyone. We hiked the Kalalau Trail to the falls and it was stunning and sunny! I highly recommend it. The write ups on it can be intimidating. Our group ranged from 65 to 11 and we all made it, and some of us even swam up to the falls. Just wear the appropriate shoes and carry drinking water and pack a good lunch.
We definitely will go back - Kauai is an amazing Island, Poipu was sunny, warm and glorious!

We stayed at this condo for two nights, and found the condo itself very clean and welcoming. The grounds were very well kept and beautiful and the owners were very good to deal with in booking and answering questions. It was however noisy at night, as not everyone adhered to the rule of quiet after 9pm. With no a/c, and the warmer than usual temperatures, the windows had to be open, and the neighbor's sounded literally like they were in our room talking, well after midnight. Both nights had this unfortunate occurrence, and on top of a late night, our last morning also had us awake at 5:15am, as other travelers were up this early packing up and leaving, none too quietly with their little ones. Making us rather tired for our own flight out that night. If you don't mind noise and are a bit of a night owl, it is a great location with beaches and shopping nearby.

We stayed here for a wonderful week in March 2013. The condo was just as the photos show it -- perhaps bigger in feel. Everything was new and clean in the condo, and the location is an easy walk to both Brennecke's and Shipwreck beach. Great to get there and find a boogie board, snorkeling gear, tennis rackets, beach towels, coolers and beach chairs. The view is beautiful – nothing more relaxing than early morning coffee or evening mai tais looking out to the whales breaching.

This condo is in a fantastic location - southern most tip of the US - for wonderful whale watching! Each evening we headed outside to watch whales breaching, dolphins jumping and sea turtles. Everything we needed was available for use in the condo - kitchen supplies, fresh beach towels, sand toys, boogie boards (very thoughtful of the owners). The master bedroom is terrific and the flow of the condo especially nice. Only downside is that you are in a condo... which means you hear your neighbors at times (above and below).

We were two 50+ couples that shared this unit from Jan. 30th to Feb.13th. The location was perfect with regard to the proximity to Poipu Beach, Brennakes Beach and Shipwreck Beach. We found them to have the absolute best conditions for swimming and sunning as opposed to north side beaches which were mostly closed due to high surf. Also close to Merrimans, Roys and Casa D’amici for fine dining and the Plantation Gardens. The unit is exactly as described by many others with regard to an ocean view that found us sitting on the lanai with our coffee each morning watching for whales and we were never disappointed. The decorating of this unit was great and it has everything you need to prepare and serve your own meals if you so choose. We did a lot of eating in and used the communal grills and quickly found this as an opportunity meet many nice people from all over and swap stories. There is every appliance you could imagine including a blender and coffee grinder. The amount of beach toys, beach chairs, mats and a cooler were more than we could have imagined and made our beach trips very enjoyable and saved us having to purchase all of those types of items. We found that with the windows open and the use of ceiling fans, the unit was comfortable during the entire stay and we never felt that we could have used air conditioning. The grounds are extremely well maintained and clean. The office staff were very helpful when we talked to them. All in all, I thank Rodney and Karen for the use of their unit and I hope to return.

I stayed in this condo with four other girls, and though there was some bed sharing (the sofa bed is not the best - we chose to share the other beds) the space was great, and we had plenty of room. The location cant be beat, and sipping mimosas on the patio watching whales breach was a fantastic way to start each day. Its close enough to walk to multiple other hotels for dinner and drinks, and an easy walk to Poipu beach. There is no air conditioning, but there are ceiling fans, and lots of windows/ventilation. Stocked with all the stuff you will need, I would go back again. One tip that they cant recommend due to it being down the rocks.....there is a path to the ocean (you're up on the rocks), and TONS of sea turtles swim there every day - its fantastic to watch, and was also a daily activity :) Enjoy.

I had an opportunity to return to Hawaii and re-booked this condo. I took my daughter and we had a blast. We were there in January, a great time to go for whale watching. We loved sitting out on the balcony and watching the whales, some of them were so close, it was just amazing! The weather was fantastic! The condo had everything a teenager could want, boogie board, rafts, etc. We enjoyed walking down to the famous Poipu beaches, and of course getting shaved ice. The condo is fantastic and it truly had everything I needed for a perfect vacation. I noticed a few great additions to the condo, a flat screen tv in the master, lots of beach towels, ice chests, etc, and brand new bedding (which was new last time I was there!) There were also games, and DVD's, a really nice touch when entertaining a teenager. This condo was spotless, just like the last time I stayed there! This is my 1st choice of where to stay in Hawaii!!

This was the most relaxing vacation..the condo was absolutely breathtaking. It was equipped with everything you can possible need..the best was the view from the lanai ..we were able to see dolphins and whales from the lanai. The people that work on the grounds were extremely friends and the property was beautifully kept up.close to many beaches,resturants and shopping..I found it very relaxing listening to the birds and the waves..I would recommend this place to anybody trulely amazing :)

Such a lovely condo... So close to the water with a beautiful view from the lanai. There is a small path u can take out onto the rocks (although there are 25 signs advising you not to do so) where you can watch the waves break against the rocks and the most amazing sunsets. Condo looks exactly as described. Nice big kitchen for all your cooking after your hit Costco and just about everything you need to make it with. Beach chairs, snorkel gear and beach towels made the all day trip to Hanalei Bay a breeze.
The only annoyance were these small fruit flies that seemed to only come at nite and were swarming enough to make me spend some time every nite trying to kill all of them. So close to poipu beach and Brenneckes. Wonderful vacation. Kids LOVED the pool and hot tub. I would def stay here again!

We stayed at this condo for one week, and in all honesty I can say this was one of the best vacations I have ever had. The condo was awesome! It was very comfortable and absolutelt beautiful. I couldn't wait to wake up in the morning in order to have coffee on the lanai while watching the ocean. Then it's a short walk to watch a spectacular sunrise (this is saying alot because I am NOT a morning person). And as an added bonus, in the exact same spot where you watch the awesome sunrises, you can also watch even more spectacular sunsets over the ocean. All I can say is WOW! The condo is in an excellent location close to shopping, dining, beaches and everything you want out of Hawaii. The owners were very pleasant to deal with, and this condo is well worth money spent! If I had any complaints, it would only be that I don't live there.

...was really great in every way.The owner was communicative and great to work with as were the Makahuena property folks. The condo itself is beautfully decorated and well equiped, it has everything we needed. The pictures accurarety portray both the lovely condo and property grounds. We had a great stay here and would rent the Bughao Hale again.

What a perfect spot! The condo was exactly as described and filmed...immaculate and well-equipped. The Makahuena staff keeps the grounds maintained and all facilities...tennis courts, pool, hot tub...were in great shape and very enjoyable. The location is ideal...just a 10 minute walk to a park with 3 amazing beaches. A deli sits at the edge of the park for "emergency" shave ice, sandwiches, and other goodies. We enjoyed adventures throughout the island...Napali Coast Trail hike, Waimea Canyon, National Tropical Botanical Gardens, kayaking on the Wailua River, and hiking from the condo to a docent led tour of an amazing cave, (near horse ranch). The condo owners have thought of all possible needs that their guests may have while staying in Poipu...plenty of beach equipment and chairs. Their prompt communications always made us feel that they would have attended to any problem we could have encountered. We would return without hesitation and have recommended this condo to a number of friends since our return.

There is the wow factor the minute you enter this tastefully decorated condo in Poipu. It was clean and stocked with many of the essentials, which other condos that I have rented in Hawaii do not have. It was a beautiful place to come home to!!! PLUS we spent many enjoyable hours sitting on the lanai watching the whales and the dolphins, which swam near the shore several times!!
Well worth the money we paid to rent this property. I would strongly recommend it to friends or relatives.

After much discussion, my husband and I felt we had to address how we felt about our stay.
I had very high hopes after speaking via email and phone with the owners. However, that is where it stops.
The condo is in a fantastic location. 5 STARS
Condo is nicely put together. 4 STARS
Here is the backstory: Upon arriving the condo mgmt began harassing my husband for a credit card, even though this had been booked through the owners directly. The owner quickly took care of this issue. However, then began the SLOW decline of our enjoyment and relaxation of the condo. This was our first time staying at the property. Perfect for the five of us with a brand new remodeled kitchen and you cannot beat the location. Problems:
#1Emailed AND called the owner about the NOISE of people upstairs and downstairs. Called manager. Not only had he never heard from the owner to fix the problem, but he NEVER did anything either. #2The non-stop sewer smell in the parking lot area. They have a serious problem. #3Power was shut off on day 2 while they 'fixed' something. this went on for two days with the generator 100 feet from the kitchen window. #4the 400 lb wildebeasts living in the upstairs unit. I wanted to kill them.nonstop moving around furniture. It sounded like a bank vault being dragged on a concrete floor...ALL DAY and began at 6:30 am every morning - very nice to wake up my 4 year old for 15 days straight. #5The 8 kids & 7 adults crammed in the downstairs unit partying at all hours of the day. they would not manage their kids who were constantly screaming and ruling the pool area with the running & noise #6The guys in the unit next door smoking - nothing like having to close YOUR condo door so cigarette smoke doesn't get in. #7My personal favorite - LAWNMOWERS at 830 am....for two hours. Had to keep doors and windows shut the entire time. Simply maddening. #8Serious lack of any security monitoring anyone unruly. (refer to #5 the family who squeezed 16 people into unit downstairs) #9 I despise being woken up everuymorning at 5 AM by the watering system outside. Is there nothing worse than having your sleep disrupted on a daily basis? I think not...The condo unit next door had common sense and began watering at night. Made better sense to both the husband and I. Sadly, I would not stay here again. This has been the noisiest vacation rental I have ever experienced and to not have the owner or the manager deal with the concerns/complaints is like throwing money away.

We had a wonderful 4 night stay in this condo. It was wonderful! The pictures do not do it justice. The place was much bigger then the pictures showed, and everything was new and spotless. The owner has stocked the condo with everything that could be needed. We enjoyed using the beach chairs, towels, cooler, and even the boogie boards. Our highlight of the condo was waking to the sounds of the waves, and enjoying the large deck that over looked the ocean, tropical gardens and pool. The deck is furnised with nice deck furniture and we spent many hours outside, it was wonderful. We enjoyed the walking paths around the property, and the BBQ and tennis courts. This condo was incredible, we will definitly stay here again!!

We stayed 10 nights at this condo with our family of 6. It is difficult to find a property that has enough bed spaces for everyone and this condo has it. Located in a phenomenal area and on the cliff of Makahuena in Poipu, you are right in the middle of sunny Kauai with great surfing, boogie boarding and quiet snorkeling a very short walk away. There is also a fantastic path to run on from the cliffs, around the water. This condo has been recently updated and is beautiful. We had one of the best vacations here. The kitchen is fully stocked and we found it easy to make each meal. The bbq is around the corner-close enough to cook but not smell the smoke. We ate almost every meal from the balcony looking over the gorgeous ocean watching dolphins play in the surf. There is wireless internet, cable, a swimming pool and jacuzzi. They also have 2 boogie boards, 2 beach chairs, a large cooler and a small cooler, 2 tennis rackets and very, very clean. The appearance of the rental is even better than the pictures. We were all very pleased. The owner was wonderful and very helpful. I would highly recommend this property to anyone whether a single person, couple or a large family. A wonderful place for a nice dinner is the Beach House or Tidepools at the Hyatt. Fantastic meals at both places! We kayaked down the river and hiked to a waterfall. We hiked many places but I really recommend waterproof bug spray. The mosquitoes were bad! Boogie Boarding by the condo is the best boogie boarding we have ever done and surfing at PK's is fantastic. The Sea Turtles were fun to snorkle with by the Beach House Restaurant just make sure not to touch or bother them-Federal offense. Having a rental car is the way to go so that you can see the entire island. Know also that this condo is upstairs on the second level- nice for the view. Parking is pretty close. No air conditioning, but wonderful ceiling fans that keep you cool. Basically, it's a phenomenal place to stay and centrally located to all of the great things to do in Kauai!

This is a beautifully remodeled condominium that is very comfortably decorated. My fiance and I stayed here for our week on the south sunny shore of kauai and we were so happy we chose this place. There are beautiful ocean views, a lovely lanai where we had breakfast and dinner every night. The unit was very light, bright, and open. The grounds were very well maintained, and the pool/spa area was a great relaxing place. You are only a 10 minute walk down to Poipu beach and all the amenities the Poipu area has to offer. We had a wonderful stay and the owners were very sweet and accommodating to our needs. We would love to stay at this property again!
