Place of Refuge, Big Island

The so called Place of Refuge at Honaunau is one of Hawaiis most interesting historical landmarks, and directly next to Honaunau Bay (seen in the panorama) which has excellent snorkeling. In the days of the Hawaiian kingdom, defeated law breakers could seek sanctuary at the nearest temple, or place of refuge, where after performing a ritual, absolve themselves of their crime and return to life in the community. Defeated warriors could also come to these temples to switch allegiance and spare themselves of the wrath of the victor. There is a $5 entrance fee..
