Clean home with nice lanai to relax on after a long day exploring. Some challenges (washer/dryer, light etc) due to remote location but we didn’t mind. The property next door is noisy with the chanting, yelling and drum amplifiers but settled down at about 11pm finally. Sue has said that’s been sold and will become a different type of resort.

What a special place! We enjoyed our stay so much and found the location to be very peaceful. Sue is an outstanding host, responsive, friendly and very helpful with answering questions and providing information. Each morning I walked to the nearby cafe for coffee, then across the street to the bench overlooking the ocean. My son and I enjoyed each having our own space and being able to make meals in the kitchen. The breeze throughout the house was wonderful and we spent most of our time there just reading and relaxing. But it would also be a good home base for outings such as nearby beaches, farmers market, and volcanoes NP. MacKenzie recreation area is very close and is a must see. Also on a clear night it is an excellent location for stargazing!

It's obvious Sue and Chad put time and effort in making the house and grounds beautiful. The house was equipped with everything we needed to cook, and just relax and enjoy the surroundings. All you hear are the birds and crashing waves, no road sounds. I spent every possible minute outside. It was also a treat to visit with Sue, she knows a wealth of information on the area and is just plain fun! With any luck, we'll be back again!

Just what we were looking for after a few days on the west side of the island. Sue & Chad have an amazing gem of a property and the hard work they put in shows. Everything was labeled well and guidelines were simple and easy to follow. The area is more secluded than some other areas but we lived it and still found Vilcanoes NP and Hilo attractions easy to reach. Sue was a friendly host and made us feel welcome!

This place was great. Nice and quiet away from town and next to the ocean. At night its dark which is perfect for stars and the property is amazing. Thanks to the host for the tour of the area and the info behind the area.

I had such a peaceful and wonderful stay. I loved all the fresh air that blew freely throughout the home as well as all the natural light. I felt very safe as I was travelling as a single gal. The owners Chad and Sue were absolutely wonderful and brought me fresh oranges to juice! The home was very clean and comfortable. I didn’t even miss my bed! The bed was very comfortable. I am already planning my return. Being surrounded every day by beautiful nature gave me inner peace. If you’re looking to relax in a magical place, this is it!

This house is about 10 miles from Pāhoa, on a lovely secluded piece of land. We loved the peaceful setting. You really feel like you are away from it all, which you pretty much are. Sue and Chad live in a separate house on the same piece of land and are great hosts. Very helpful and responsive. Highly recommended if you want to see the non-touristy side of the Big Island.

The property and location is perfect for 2-4 people. The grounds are beautiful and the house was perfect. We enjoyed the area, beautiful ocean views just across from the driveway. The lava flows you pass driving in are amazing. Absolutely recommend.

June 2024
We had an amazing stay, and our host Sue was spectacular! We used the property as our 'base" to go on adventures around the island. Within a little over an hours drive we visited Volcanoes National Park: thermal pools at Isaac Hale State Park; waterfalls, snorkeling, botanical gardens, and a lava tube near Hilo; and Kehana black sand beach which was just a few minutes away. The house os off the grid so you need to be mindful of energy consumption but they still have everything you need. We were asked to.compost and recycle and not use the washer/dryer after certain hours which was no problem at all. My kids loved seeing geckos in the house. You need to keep windows open to keep place cool but it was such a pleasant temperature at night- just be mindful that lights on can draw bugs. We acclimated to the more humid rainfirest aspects of the Puna area quickly. This place was its own botanical gardens- we truly loved staying there!

A serene escape nestled along the tropical Hawaii coast. This home offers a slice of paradise with its secluded three-acre expanse. Picture-perfect morning walks become a ritual, as the sun gently bathes the coastline accompanied by the soothing symphony of nature. The sound of frogs and birds creates a melodic backdrop, enveloping you in the tranquility of your surroundings. Random rain showers add a touch of whimsy to the experience, refreshing both the mind and spirit. This secluded haven is a sanctuary for those seeking solace amidst the beauty of nature, where every moment is a chance to unwind and reconnect with oneself.

This is a special, secluded property in a beautiful neighborhood across from the ocean. It really is a beautiful, unique property. There is some additional care that must be taken to stay due to its remote location (e.g., limiting power consumption), but those very minor concessions are absolutely worth it. It's absolutely gorgeous.

March 2024
Peaceful, lovely, well maintained property. Location on quieter side of the island. We were very comfortable, and enjoyed meeting and talking to Sue and Chad.
The property has so many lovely trees and flowers. The house itself is quite large and roomy for 2 people, we each had our own room. Its a wonderful place to just chill out.
I would stay again in a heartbeat, and hope to return someday!

This home might actually be heaven on earth. It’s a nature lovers paradise! Chad and Sue are the kindest people and have created a beautiful place to stay. Being able to fall asleep listening to the coqui frogs and waves crashing was incredible. Home was very clean and extremely comfortable, we found ourselves constantly saying “wanna head back to the house?” because it was so peaceful there. If I could give more than 5 stars I would!

January 2024
Our family of 3 thoroughly enjoyed our brief 3 night visit at Kamani Grove. So much aloha is this spacious, comfortable & well appointed 2 story house. Chad & Sue, the most gracious hosts, have lovingly created for decades a botanical oasis filled with flora & fauna delights. Chad made sure there is super fast wifi (for those that need it). The walk down the ‘dnveway’ to the coast is delightful. The location is a short drive to many places of interest but also a bit remote, which was what we desired (lightening & star gazing was phenomenal). We got poke & groceries on our way there in Hilo & then went out to dinner in Pāhoa. Fresh squeezed tangelo & orange juice from their trees was so memorable - liquid sunshine! We hope to visit again soon & stay for longer.

Property is away from everybody. Botanical gardens-more flowers and plants than in a professional Botanical garden. House had lots of room, bathroom was huge with shower surface none slip. Windows wide open catching the breeze. Great place to call home base for touring the island or great for sitting around reading a book.

This property is amazing!!! Driving up to the house feels like you are staying on a resort property. The landscape is beautiful! I loved the peeps frogs at night, the beautiful stars, and the total darkness. The bed was very comfortable and everything and then extras were supplied. Sue was very communicative and made us feel like welcomed guests! She left us fresh avocados and lemons from their fruit trees. We had a wonderful time and loved our stay here!

October 2023
The house sits on beautiful property surrounded by various flowers and fruit trees. About 6 min walk to the ocean to enjoy sunrises. Ocean is also visible from front porch or upstairs living room. The place has all you need to cook meals. It’s very quiet location , no immediate neighbors. There is a nice coffee shop near by. Truly beautiful, amazing and peaceful place. We were two friends, but the place is well suited for a family. Hosts Sue and Chad were welcoming and made sure we felt comfortable. Highly recommend .

July 2023
Sue and Chad's place was a relaxing quiet place in a botanical paradise. Fresh pineapple along with avacodos and other fruit were just a topping on our farmer's market purchases.
We enjoyed the setting and adapted to the location on the bottom of the Big Island. A short walk down the drive and across the road is beautiful place to watch ocean waves crashing on the shore.
Chad and Sue were perfect hosts! So friendly and available!!

Kamani Grove is the epitome of a Hawaiian Paradise. The hosts, Sue and Chad are wonderful and have taken care of every detail to ensure a comfortable stay. The grounds are beautifully manicured with delicious fruits at every turn. You couldn't ask for a more ideal place to relax and experience all the beauty, sounds and fragrance of Aloha.

Thank you Chad and Sue for opening up your dream home to share with us again! Want a true getaway from the hustle and bustle of city life? Then this is the place to be to step back and slow down and immerse yourself in “smelling the roses”. The 3 acre grounds are maintained immaculately with such love and attention by these hosts. We will definitely be back.

May 2023
This property is exactly what we were looking for. Beautiful surroundings, quiet, very well maintained and provisioned, including some local fruit waiting for us on our arrival. We spent an entire day just hanging out on the property. Location is on the quiet side of Hawaii, away from people as well as stores or restaurants, so plan accordingly. This was just what we needed - our favorite place to visit on the big island! We will definitely be back. Thanks, Sue and Chad!

April 2023
We just loved staying at Chad & Sue's beautiful home. The Pahoa area is magical with the wild ocean and tropical forests and very laid back, hippie vibe. The home was simply and tastefully decorated and we found it so comfortable. We slept well with the windows open and the sound of the coqui frogs. The landscaping was mature and beautiful and something Sue is very proud of, don't miss up a chance to tour the property with her. Lots of beautiful birds to watch, King Snails to look at (don't touch!). If you are not familiar with the area as we were, it will feel like a very long drive from the actual town of Pahoa or Hilo but we think the seclusion really added to our vacation. We would not hesitate to come back!

April 2023
Our stay here was absolutely fantastic. Sue sent lots of information ahead of time to prepare us for our stay which was very helpful. The house is a ways out from the nearest grocery store, but the trade off is well worth it. The home is a good size for our family of 4, and the property is just like paradise. They are completely on solar, so there are some rules around appliances that are easy to follow. The birds are loud at night, so if you're a light sleeper bring some ear plugs. My only regret is we didn't stay longer.

April 2023
Great experience staying at this property, with it's beautiful botanical scenery and location directly across from the coast. Hosts, Sue and Chad, were very gracious. Having them located on the property to assist if needed was a welcome bonus. House and property were clean, neat and had everything we needed to make our stay wonderful. The location across from the coast was our favorite, the ocean cliff view from the bench was breathtaking. Thank you for a wonderful stay!

If you want to be blown away by the incredible beauty that has been created by Sue and Chad with the abundance of botanical eye candy out every window in the house then choose this place. It will not disappoint. We could hardly leave this place and just enjoyed "being" here in the quietude. There was no need to get out except to walk down the amazingly long driveway to the ocean cliffs right across the road. Doesn't get any better! Chad and Sue were fantastic hosts and the place is spotlessly clean.. We would love to return.

September 2022
Sue & Chad's cottage was perfect for us meeting up halfway with our adult son from New Zealand. It's set amid a large tropical garden and completely private. The rooms are large and the layout with a bedroom and living room on each floor worked well. It's very simple but nicely appointed, although some extra bed pillows, a few better knives in the kitchen and ceiling fans instead of portable would have been appreciated. The ocean view across from their driveway is magnificent, and there's a bench to sit on to watch the waves crash onto the rocks. We enjoyed a delicious pineapple from their garden as well as beautiful lemons and limes, which supplemented our fruit & vegetables from the Hilo Farmers Market, about an hour away.
Their cottage would be a wonderful experience for city children to experience living off the grid, hanging clothes on a washing line, sleeping with the windows open and waking up to birdsong.
August 2022
Thank you Sue and Chad for your hospitality! You have a very beautiful home.
Janet L.
August 2022
We love the place and spent sometime enjoying the garden and tasted fruits Sue and Chuck left. Sue and Chuck are amazing, as well as the fruits.
It’s a tucked away and very quiet area like a paradise. We heard birds singing all the time, saw a wild pig, tons of exotic plants…exciting experience for kids. Will definitely stay again.

August 2022
Drive through the private gate and arrive at your own private oasis. We could feel the stress in our bodies lift as we drove down the driveway to a botanical feast for the eyes! Chad and Sue are truly lovely people who I hope to see again. The fresh fruit from their huge property tasted beyond delicious, we were lucky to arrive when the pineapples were in season. We really hope to be back to this slice of paradise. Thank you Chad and Sue for all your hard work to make your place so enjoyable.

July 2022
Check in was unpleasant due to the owner's frustrations that guests keep going to the wrong location, including us. She was rude even after we apologized.
It is very humid and hot and there was not an adequate supply of fans to stay cool. Just a few desk fans, no ceiling fans. It was stifling for those of us not used to humidity.
The tropical garden was gorgeous and the area is very beautiful. It is quite a drive to any swimmable beaches, except one nudist beach nearby, or any sites besides the cliffs. There are places "off the beaten path" we've stayed that were within a 45 minute drive to Hilo sights or Volcano Park. This was a bit too far out for us. While the gardens and surrounding area is beautiful, a family with kids can only take in the view for so long each day.
Rats. In the kitchen in the night. That put the nail in the coffin for this place for us.

June 2022
My wife and I spent our honeymoon at this house ten years ago and recently returned for a little vacation. Staying here feels like you are in your own botanical garden, with all kinds of flowers, palms, avocado and lemon trees and plenty of things I couldn't identify. If you're interested, Sue will give you a tour of the grounds and tell you all about the plants. She is very kind and helpful. The place is very private and quiet. The property is huge and the house is set back from the main road by a few hundred feet of driveway. You cannot see the owner's house from the rental; they are separated by a dense wall of foliage.
The whole property is off-grid. Water is from a cistern and power is from solar panels, so you can't drink the tap water and you need to be conscious of your power consumption at night so the batteries aren't drained. But a large bottle of water was provided for drinking and coffee making, and we never had any problems with the electricity. The stove is gas. The showers were hot. Honestly, except for not drinking the tap water it felt like any ordinary home. The beds were comfortable, the furnishings were cozy and the kitchen was well-equipped for cooking.
The main downside of this place is that it's a long drive to some of the places you may want to go, like the sandy beaches and snorkeling locations on the west side of the island. But it's not that far to Hawaii Volcanoes National Park, Akaka Falls and Rainbow Falls, and one of my favorites, the Hawaii Tropical Bioreserve and Garden. I honestly prefer a longer drive and coming home to peace and privacy over staying in a busy resort hotel with attractions nearby.
If you prefer the lush tropical feel, in peace and quiet and surrounded by plants, this is for you. We would definitely come back here again.
Ryan M.

If you are looking for a quiet botanical paradise this is the place for you. Sue and Chad have created an ideal setting for those looking to get away from the crowds and enjoy a relaxing stay surrounded by tropical plants and an ocean view.

Wow! When we pulled up to the gate we couldn’t believe our eyes! The setting is beyond belief and the rental is delightful. Nature and beauty abound with waves crashing against the cliffs in the distance. Location is perfect for exploring Volcanoes National Park and charming Hilo, each within easy driving distance. If you’re looking to get away from it all, look to further. Thanks Sue and Chad…we loved our stay!

May 2022
The property was absolutely beautiful!!!
Sue was a wonderful hostess and took us around the garden and told about it. It would be better to book excursions on the Hilo side of the island as we had to do some driving to Kona side. But it was worth the drive

April 2022
The home is great. Chad and Sue are good people and excellent hosts. If you are looking for a place convienient to a lot of touristy things - look elsewhere. But if you are looking for a place that is quiet, secluded and comfotable - this is a great place. Realize what you are booking; you are "off-grid", although Chad has done a great job with the setup, very little difference than if you had "normal grid" power. You are also 20 - 30 minutes from a grocery store. You are about a 2 minute walk to the shoeline and some fantastic sunrises. And a simple walk around the yard to enjoy the lemons, avacados and other fruit. We very much enjoyed our stay here and recommend it for anyone looking for the same type of place as we were.

March 2022
Our Kamani Grove rental was pure pleasure and by far our favorite vacation experience. The house was impeccable and thoughtfully and completely provisioned. We can not think of anything we needed/wanted that was not provided. The grounds are beautiful, restful, and peaceful.
Most of all, our hosts are second to none. We will definitely keep in touch with this wonderful couple.

February 2022
Chad and Sue were great hosts on a beautiful piece of property. Very tranquil and private. Their 3 acres is full of fruit trees, my wife squeezed fresh orange juice every morning. The house is roomy and comfortable and very clean, we felt very much at home. If you’re visiting the big island don’t miss the opportunity to stay here, it will make a good vacation a great vacation!

January 2022
The hosts were very hospitable, took me on a tour of the variety of fruits and flora present on this property. Was able to pick avocado, lilikoi, strawberry guava, banana, mangelos, and others on the property. I did day trips … the local shore, due to lava flows (latest 2018) has limited beach access. But lush vegetation and nearby national volcanic park were fascinating. For nature lovers this is a great house.

January 2022
A perfect place to be one with nature. For those of you looking for a remote place to simplify your soul. This is it. The wonderful hostess was gracious and warm. You will feel love and care that is put into the property and home. The property is well kept and the home is meticulously maintained. She offered a tour of the property and was kind enough to leave us with some fresh picked goodies for a snack. The evening and morning animal choirs will lull you to sleep and liven you in the morning. I can’t say enough about how healing our stay was.

January 2022
We loved this property and house. It is located in an extraordinarily beautiful part of the Big Island. The grounds were filled with flowers, fruits and vegetation. The house was spacious with large windows to enjoy the views. The property owners were kind and helpful. We really wished we'd allowed more than 3 nights here. This particular part of the island is really a hidden treasure. Stay here--you won't regret it!

December 2021
A wonderfully roomy house on an exceptional property! This self sufficient home is as friendly to the environment as it’s hosts are to the guests! Sue and Chad were very pleasant and quick to respond to any needs or questions we had. The beautifully landscaped property had several fruit trees that we were welcome to take advantage of. We would pick oranges in the morning for orange juice, avocado, star fruit, lemons, all right from the tree! We would definitely return!

November 2021
This rental was amazing! We felt like we were in a secluded, private resort! The hosts Sue and Chad were so welcoming and went out of their way to help us with our reservations, arrival and stay. We were welcomed with fresh fruit from the property and were able to pick fresh avocados the size of a small football! We walked 1/3 mile down to the cliffs on the beautiful shoreline with our coffee in the mornings to watch the sunrise. Beautiful location and very clean and nice house! Would definitely stay here again!

November 2021
Sue & Chad are great hosts and their property is a beautiful place to stay to enjoy & explore Puna. The house is airy, clean & comfortable and the secluded setting up in the grove among the trees and plants is like being in your own botanical garden. We were very fortunate to be able to enjoy it and would love to be able come back again (especially for all the fruit).

October 2021
My daughter and I reunited there after two years, we both love nature and Sue and Chad's and Sue's property is the perfect place to reconnect with nature. Our hosts were wonderful teachers regarding botany and all things Hawaiian. We could not have chosen a better place and would love to return at a later date.

October 2021
I'm not new to finding far away spots to retreat into, find peace while hoping to find connection with a few around me. It is with absolute gratitude that I found such a place with Sue and Chad's home and lush botanic gardens in KAMANI GROVE, Pāhoa, HI. When one is sitting in front of a computer from home, looking through countless listings, trusting the photos, descriptions, and reading reviews left to get a sense and make a selection to commit, it can feel sometimes overwhelming. I abandoned this exercise a few times, before deciding to go forward with this home, 5 months prior. I am so glad I did.
Everything you see, read, and if possible, sense from the info provided is very accurate. This side of the island is not Kona, rather a side that feels more authentic, ancient and rich in its environment. One word that keeps its hold on me is "spirit" in all the wonderful ways. If you feel her, you will hear her too.
Thank you Sue and Chad... I can't wait to return again!

September 2021
Kamani Grove was a wonderful place for us to see the sights of the big island. The roads are well paved to the front gate so no need for 4WD and hanging out or sleeping to the sounds of the jungle around us was magical. The house has plenty of room and gets a great cross breeze going in the hot afternoons. Being able to walk down to the black sand beach or to the small bench by the sea right past the main gate was an added bonus!
Tom B.
September 2021
We were looking to see the untouched regions of the Big Island, and we really found that here! The property is exceptionally beautiful. Sue and Chad are warm, welcoming hosts who maintain a tropical paradise on these grounds. We really felt a world away from our home in Chicago--which is just what we wanted in visiting the area. It was really amazing to wake up, stroll down the lush driveway and watch the waves crash against the rocky coast. It was an unforgettable experience.

We LOVED staying at Sue and Chad's place. If I were to use one word to describe our time there, it was magical. The atmosphere they've created with their beautiful manicured property and their perfectly organized home is splendid! Sue and Chad are the best hosts we've had - so friendly, so accommodating and caring! We enjoyed chatting with them and they were so kind to give us a tour of the property and share all their fresh fruit with us! We discovered so many new fruits we'd never tried before. They were generous! The house is extremely well stocked and we were able to cook very comfortably! Everything is neatly labeled and the cookware was solid - Sue really thinks of everything you need to whip up nearly anything! The house was very comfortable and incredibly clean! If you need anything they were only a text away!
We walked out the gate and watched the waves across the road a few times and it was unlike anything we'd seen before! Absolutely Beautiful views! Overall we loved our stay here and wished we could stay longer. If we were to do it again, we would spend more time on the property and relax in their lovely gardens.

We loved staying at Sue and Chad’s house. They have created something truly special at Kamani Grove. The house itself is a unique design that feels comfortable and breezy. The gardens and property have been grown and maintained with such love and attention to detail, the photos don’t do it justice. Sitting outside watching the water in the morning, or walking down the path to the best special oceanside view, are memories that will stay with our family for years to come. Sue was thoughtful and responsive, even sharing fruit harvested from the yard. We’re thankful to them for sharing their home!
