Our home is located in Hawaiian Beaches, just two blocks from the ocean on a quiet residential street in a peaceful neighborhood. It’s a great place for families and groups looking to relax, slow down, and enjoy the natural beauty of the Puna coast.

Two small beach parks are within walking distance. A little farther along, you can reach Government Beach Road and Honolulu Landing, as well as the Nanawale Forest Reserve. This area features old-growth forest, rugged coastline, and places to walk, explore, or watch the sunrise. The forest reserve and coastline are less than half a mile away.

Continue along the scenic ocean-side road and you’ll eventually reach a beautiful 200-year-old mango forest.

The Space

Our home is spacious and comfortable, with hardwood-look laminate floors throughout. The upstairs living area is surrounded by large windows and opens onto a generous lanai with hammocks, a large outdoor couch, and dining space.

The downstairs level has three bedrooms, a second entertainment/common room, and additional outdoor access. The large yard is filled with tropical flowers, fruit trees, and plants, with a small pond and waterfall toward the back.

Upstairs

The upstairs is an open-concept space combining the living room, kitchen, dining area, and gaming space.

The living room has a large flat-screen entertainment system, an L-shaped couch, and a large papasan chair. There is also a small office area with a desk and printer.

Across from the living and entertainment area is the dining space, featuring a large hardwood dining table with seating for 8–10.

The kitchen is well equipped for preparing almost any kind of meal. It includes plenty of cookware, bakeware, utensils, and multiple sets of dishes and silverware. Countertop appliances include a rice cooker, pressure cooker, food processor, waffle iron, blender, and a variety of baking and pizza pans. There is also a well-stocked spice cabinet available for shared use.

The upstairs lanai has a teak outdoor dining table with four chairs, a large outdoor couch, and at least two hammock chairs. It’s a wonderful place to enjoy your morning coffee, read a book, or relax in the evening.

Upstairs also has a full bathroom and the primary bedroom, which features a king-size bed and French doors opening directly onto the lanai.

Downstairs

The downstairs entry/common room has a large-screen TV, an L-shaped couch, and three video-game-style rocker chairs. It’s a great space for the keiki (children) to watch their own shows or play games while the adults enjoy the upstairs living area.

There are bookshelves with books and board games, as well as a closet containing beach items, some snorkeling gear, and outdoor games.

Three bedrooms are located downstairs:

Front bedroom: A queen-size bed, TV, and its own French-door exterior entrance in addition to the interior door.
Garden bedroom: A queen-size bed with windows overlooking the koi pond and tropical garden.
Large downstairs bedroom: A queen-size bed plus bunk beds with full-size mattresses. This bedroom also has its own private full bathroom.

There is an additional full bathroom in the downstairs hallway, along with a linen closet.

The laundry room is located toward the back of the downstairs level and includes laundry facilities plus additional space for linens and towels.

The Yard & Garden

The property has a large, mostly level lawn surrounded by tropical plants, flowers, and fruit trees. There is plenty of room for the keiki to play, run around, or search for lizards and frogs.

The front yard includes date palms, flowering red and white ginger, bird of paradise, bananas, puakenikeni, papaya, orange and lemon trees, night-blooming jasmine, soursop fruit, star-fruit, passion fruit and more. Guests are welcome to enjoy the fruit, be careful to not damage the trees. Make sure you positively identify and wash fruit before eating.

In the backyard you’ll find a small meditation and reading area surrounded by stone walls, flowers and many climbing plants. There is also a small koi pond with flowering water lilies and fish, including koi, and guppies, along with plenty of tadpoles.

At night, you may hear frogs, lizards, and other local night wildlife like owls and even humpback whales. Flashlights are usually available in the drawers or on a shelf to borrow. If you handle frogs or toads, please wash your hands afterward.

Sleeping Arrangements

The home comfortably sleeps 10 guests in beds.

There is also an extra single mattress available in a closet if needed. Up to two additional guests can sleep on the couches, making 13 guests possible in a pinch. However, we do not recommend using the home for 13 unless everyone is comfortable sharing close quarters.

There are plenty of extra linens and bedding stored in the downstairs bathroom closet and laundry room.

Internet & Entertainment

The house has high-speed fiber-optic internet and mesh Wi-Fi covering the home and yard.

There are Apple TVs and PlayStation 4 consoles. The Apple TVs are signed into our account, with access to a selection of music, movies, and TV shows. You cannot make purchases through our account.

You are also welcome to sign into your own Netflix, Hulu, Disney+, or other streaming accounts.

For rainy or stormy days, there are plenty of books and some family board games. There is also plenty of space to relax, play, or simply enjoy the sound of the rain. Or, if you don’t mind getting wet, head outside and enjoy the tropical weather!

A Note About Hawai‘i’s Tropical Environment

Hawai‘i has a tropical climate, which means it also has tropical insects. We regularly treat both the interior and exterior of the home for common pests, but seeing an occasional bug is normal and unavoidable in this environment.

Insects can enter from outside, and even grocery bags, paper bags, and cardboard boxes brought into the house can sometimes carry insects or eggs. We do our best to minimize them, but we cannot guarantee an insect-free environment.

Some flying insects are attracted to lights, especially at night. We recommend keeping the screen doors closed and turning off the outdoor lights when they aren’t needed. This helps keep the house more comfortable and reduces the number of insects attracted to the lanai.

This home is designed to give you plenty of room to spread out, relax, cook, play, read, and enjoy the outdoors. Whether you spend your days exploring the Puna coast, walking through the forest, relaxing on the lanai, playing with the keiki in the yard, or simply enjoying a quiet evening at home, we hope you’ll feel comfortable and at ease during your stay. Hello Adam, everything was great pertaining your home. The bedding and floors was quite dirty. We pulled the bedding it was dusty and smelt musty. The floors was very dusty and sandy feeling under the feet. We did a dust mop and used the swifter to mop during our stay. Your kitchen is well equipped for all cooking. I thank you for having such a spacious and safe location. Sammi

We arrived to find 3 cars in the driveway. Verified the address to make sure we were at the right house. Refrigerator was broken. Owner quickly responded and ordered a new one as quickly as he could. Though that still meant we had to buy ice chests and ice daily for a couple days. Came home from a long day to find the new refrigerator plugged in downstairs. Floor in kitchen destroyed and now a tripping hazard, dirt all over the stairs, railing taken off stairs, and light removed. Owner did have maintenance replace railing next day. Though we had to deal with the rest for another week. Was told that they would be putting the fridge upstairs on Monday but did not show back up until Friday. When they laid the fridge down and then we again could not use the fridge for 24 hours. They had torn more up on the floor in the kitchen and left more dirt on the floor. I had enough of cleaning up after other people on my vacation. Checked out early. Maintenance man asked on 2nd day of vacation if we had any other issues than the fridge. We told him that the light and fan over the table did not work he said okay and never addressed it. I feel that the owner was attempting to be as attentive as possible and did respond quickly when I initiated the conversations. Though could have communicated better when plans changed i.e. plugging in fridge downstairs or not coming in on Monday to move the fridge. This did not make for an enjoyable 1st time experience for my boys to Hawaii.

We booked this house because it was big enough for all of us (8) and it was on the less expensive side. We weren’t expecting anything fancy , just a clean place to stay. We wouldn’t spend much time there anyways. We arrive later at night and there are 3 vehicles in the drive and a light on. Concerned us that someone was in the house. Not the case thank goodness. Yard is a mess with broken basketball hoop, plants terribly overgrown since the pictures were taken, and some random trash scattered. First thing after opening the door was the worst mold smell I have ever smelled. (Yes this house is close to the ocean in the tropics, it’s going to be musty. This was way worse than that and we could later determine it was coming from the laundry room) The smell was so bad for the rest of the week most of our group slept up stairs in the living room. It’s late and we’re here for the night,so we bring our stuff in. We start looking around and notice that the house is rough. The front door handle is tapped open and just uses the auto lock and the light in the entry way (they call this the second living room) flickers constantly. Next we decide to go to bed. We discover the sheets are dirty, a couple burn holes in one set, and everything is not what was pictured. These sheets are sweat stained and discolored enough to remind you how many people probably slept on them before you. I could go on but I think you get my point, find something else!

A spacious and inviting place to stay while exploring this side of the island. Quick response to any question and the star fruit picked fresh from the front yard was delicious!

Large house with lots of room for everyone. Kitchen has all the dishes, pots, & pans needed. Adam (owner) and Connie (manager) were both great with any questions, awesome communication! We will stay again if (when) we make it back!

This property was accurately described with no air conditioning and limited wifi access (this made quick communication with host more difficult). The landscaping up keep seemed to be falling behind from the description. The home worked for our group of 9 well. The area felt safe and was near the ocean. We did have to drive about 30-40 min to find beaches, 20 min for groceries, and about 1 hour to volcano national park. The host was easy to communicate with. The home had all that we needed.

This house was perfect for our large family of 8. Plenty of room, dishes, towels, seating, beds and bathrooms. Hot water was wonderful. Everything we needed to cook meals for our large family was available in the well stocked kitchen. Beds were comfortable. Everyone slept great and we loved the yard and the view. Great location for us. Price was amazing for everything the house had to offer. The laminate floors have water damage but that is clearly stated in the description and doesn't affect the function of the house in the least. It does get warm in the home but with the fans and the windows open it cools down. We would stay again without question! Owner is prompt to respond and extremely helpful when we asked for suggestions of where to visit and what to see. Thank you!

The house is getting some floor repairs done, which I was told upfront about. Bathrooms and kitchen were clean. Overall a good experience.

This spacious house and lanai works well for a large family. That said, we had a few issues. The garbage was overflowing when we arrived, with a massive amount of aluminum cans, but no recycling instructions. The listing really messed up, providing us with two different entry codes and two different addresses. When we finally found the right house, the entry code mechanism was unlike anything I have ever seen, and if it hadn't been for my 14 year old grandson, I wouldn't have figured it out how to get in. Also the TVs didn't work. Other than that, we enjoyed our stay.

Great family vacation house. Great amenities and super comfortable. Doors, some furniture, and floors could use a refresh but for the price per night you can’t beat it.

Had a great stay at Adam's place on the Hilo side of the island. Was a great home base for us while we visited Hilo attractions, as well as Volcano national park. The kitchen was well stocked with everything we needed, and there's a supermarket around 10 minutes away by car (along with restaurants and fast food options). The very spacious home provided enough room for everyone to relax, as well as comfortably rest. Adam was super communicative during the entire process, and provided clear check in/out instructions. We won't hesitate to book Adam's place again if we're ever visiting again.

The set up of this house was perfect for our group. Everything we needed & enough space for our eclectic group. We lived on the lanai! If you're picky or not used to the quirks of Pahoa you might pick this place a part but overall our group really enjoyed the amenities & set up. Quiet street with a quick walk to the rugged shoreline. Great for a peaceful getaway or big family. Thank you for everything, we will definitely look for this place again! Mahalo

We loved our stay. The home is huge, clean and only two blocks to a sunrise over the ocean. Check-in/check-out was easy, Adam was very responsive. Wouldn’t change a thing!

December 2020
Overall the place was solid. Took us a bit of time to navigate through all the online entertainment stuff but otherwise getting situated was easy. Lots of room, beds, bedding, plenty of dishes etc. Could use a few more cooking pans but overall pretty solid. The only two complaints I have are 1. We regularly didn't have hot water. There appears to have been a "timer" issue with the solar power for the hot water heater where we regularly had no hot water from about 4pm to 4am. Tried all hours of day and this consistently was a problem even though we were at the property for 30 days and it briefly got a little better after the owner had a repair man come. The water pressure in the upstairs bathroom is also nonexistant. Second issue is that he really should get new upstairs doors. We didn't have tons of bugs by Hawaii standards but all the doors are falling out of the frames upstairs and/or badly ripped. Not ideal. One other small thing was there appears to be electrical issues. Microwave stopped working after a week and never worked again despite us checking the breaker and other outlets. Similarly the upstairs bedroom would have a couple days where there was no power and the circuit breaker wouldn't let it stay on. Then magically it would work again. That all being said, overall the owner was usually responsive and our family liked the place and the beds were comfortable, the location was nice by Puna standards. Only places that are better location wise for us are a block closer to the water. But this place typically didn't get too hot and still had pretty good air circulation. We also enjoyed the yard and fruit trees in the front. Neighbors were all friendly despite us being a large family with noisy young children. Just get the water fixed!
