Hale Kai means Ocean House, and it's easy to see where this home gets its name. At this oceanfront escape on the cliffs of Hawaiian Paradise Park, you'll enjoy beautiful, unobstructed ocean views and a large wraparound deck where you can barbecue, dine in the sun, and glimpse passing whales, turtles, and dolphins. Whether you're planning a family vacation or a romantic escape - proposals have even happened on this deck - you'll love having wall-to-wall glass doors for watching the waves crash on the cliffs.

Hale Kai is located in the Hawaiian Paradise Park neighborhood, which sits just 17 miles south of Hilo and 12 miles north of Kapoho. You'll be half a mile from an oceanfront park on Beach Road, just across the neighborhood from a two-mile trail that leads through the jungle out to swimming access at Ha'ena (Shipman) Beach, and a few minutes from a grocery store, several cafes, and a gas station in Orchidland. Pahoa's cute shops are only 10 miles away, and Hawaii Volcanoes National Park is about a 30-mile drive from the house.

Really great location. The house, however, was obviously cheaply built and cheaply decorated. It was also hot as heck! No insulation apparently, and no blinds in the great room to block the heat from the sun. There were ceiling and floor fans, but the ceiling fans were noisy. The kitchen was not well outfitted--as though someone made a list of utensils but had never cooked. We had a great time, but I will look for alternatives to Vacasa the next time I am looking for a vacation rental

We loved how the entire back of the house was windows, offering an incredible view of the ocean. The deck right behind it was walled with glass, so the view is not impaired at all. The home was very clean and very comfortable. We grilled our dinners and made breakfast in the nice kitchen. It was fairly warm when we were there (unseasonably so) and so we really appreciated the whole-house fan

We were thrilled to come back to Hale Kai for another stay. The home is even more comfortable than before. Great home base for Hilo, Pahoa, and Volcano. Can’t beat the ocean view reading and relaxing on the lanai.

We stayed on property for a hiking trip and house fully met our needs. It was fully equipped and supplied even with a bag of ice in freezer. The main reason we rented property is the incredible view of the ocean from the living/dinning room and back porch. House is just 50 feet from a cliff at the ocean front and seeing/hearing the waves crash into the cliff is mesmerizing. The main negative is no AC. House gets warm during day and windows need to be left open at night. While nights are relatively pleasant you need ear plugs to sleep do to outside bird chirping all night. We had problems with the coded door lock so used the emergency lock box key entire time. Property manager promptly gave us lock box code to access key. The house uses rain water system and recommends bringing your own bottled water.

I highly recommend this well kept cheery house. My friend and I called it our home for the week. The balcony has wonderful views of the crashing waves & cliffs. Perfect place to roll out your yoga mat or gaze at the stars! Thank you to the owners.

Peaceful atmosphere where you can enjoy morning coffee and an evening glass of wine on the lanai while watching the surf and spotting whales and dolphins. The home is welcoming, comfortable, and complete with amenities for your stay. There are plenty of options for activities, exploring the island, beach going, and just about anything you want to do on the Big Island. I will definitely return!

House was spacious, clean and well stocked. Great location if you are exploring the Hilo area, Volcanos National Park and Southern area of the island. The neighborhood was beautiful and the home was very private. The deck overlooking the ocean could not be beat. Highlight was a 2 hour hike on Puna Historic Trail that led to a tiny (very tiny) black sand beach - 5 min drive from the house and took us through a muddy trail that unfolded on the coastline with beautiful views. Would stay at this house again in a heartbeat. Easy check-in / check-out process and no problems whatsoever.

This home was lovely and it's position on the cliff overlooking the ocean was incredible. I spent a great deal of time watching waves and birds. It's away from the crowds but still a reasonable drive from Hilo or the volcanoes national park. We absolutely loved it here and did not want to leave.

This house is incredibly located on the cliffs south of Hilo, and while there is no beach, the waves crashing against the lava cliffs and beautiful sunrises make this place very special. We had a wonderful stay managed by Vacasa. Directions were clear, check in/out process simple and the property was very clean and had all the amenities you may want and then some: boogie boards, snorkeling equipment, binoculars. The outdoor patio is perfect for enjoying a breakfast or dinner and listening to coqui frogs in the nearby jungle. The whole-house fan negated the need for the A/C with all the ocean breezes and cool rain falling daily. Loved our stay, want to go again!

June 2022
House was very comfortable, except a little hot (for us Canadians) when you came home at the end of the day. Cooled off nicely with the windows open and the fans, but for sleeping the room with two single beds was still pretty warm. Great views into the ocean, very private. It is quite a drive for any groceries, restaurants, activities ....but that's what it takes to get the waves crashing as you sip your evening cocktail

We loved this house and grounds. The house was hot in the afternoons but cooled off at night. Some of doors were tricky to lock and unlock. Due to no street sign, directions to house were hard to follow the first time around.

Such a beautiful home and an amazing stay! Right on the water with the sound of the waves and the most amazing view from the deck. Perfect place for coffee in the mornings. Great for our family stay - we will certainly return. It is far from everything, so don’t forget anything on your way in, but once there, you’re immersed in your vacation experience.

As soon as you enter the property at Keaau, you realize you are somewhere exceptional. The house is beautifully furnished with a mid-century vibe. The beds are very comfortable, and the kitchen is well equipped. The highlight of the home is the lanai overlooking the Pacific Ocean, an excellent stop for yoga, watching the sunrise, and whales breaching. The property is nestled in a lovely neighborhood but is quite remote, so be sure to bring some breakfast supplies with you for your first night. We spent our days exploring the volcanoes, black sand beaches, waterfalls, gardens, Hilo, and the surrounding area. The house was the perfect place to relax after a busy day and enjoy a BBQ dinner on the lanai—a relaxing vacation.

This property was so cute and had everything we needed for a great stay. Good location on Hilo side which made it easy to do volcano and waterfalls. We loved the lanai and used it everyday. We had great views of the water and even star gazing at night. The furniture in living room was a little small but we really didn’t use it much. The customer service with Vacasa rentals was great.

The house was immaculate. The beds are comfortable. There was plenty of room for the three adults in our party. The most wonderful feature of this rental is the panoramic view on the East side of the house. We were greeted by amazing sunrises every morning!

Ocean front locations seem rare on Hilo side, so we are appreciative of the availability of this property as a vrbo! Great stay, easy home base for Volcano, Hilo, even Waimea as you must get a burger and fries at Village Burger. Loved the front wall of sliding glass doors to sit and enjoy the ocean on the rainier side of the big island.

Had a wonderful stay here at this nice house. It's nothing fancy but was more than adequate. In my humble opinion the peace and quiet (well, except for the frogs at night), the tropical breezes and the wildlife, including a large pod of Spinner's Dolphins feeding just off shore from the house, all added to what can only be described as the perfect Hawaiian vacation. Thank you for allowing us to use this house.

The house has a beautiful east facing porch that is really lovely to sit on and watch the waves in the early morning drinking your coffee. It does get quite hot until later in the day (in August at least) in the house, even with fans. The neighborhood is quiet except for the coqui frogs, which unfortunately can be exceedingly loud if they are in the bushes outside your bedroom window. These pests to the island can have croaks (co-kee is the sound they make) greater than 80 db. Some nights it wasn't that bad, others it caused us to get little sleep even with ear plugs. When they were quieter, it was a pleasant background noise. You won't hear the ocean much at night because the waves on this side are much smaller than the west side. The house is well maintained, beautifully decorated, comfortable beds, modern bathrooms, and uses rain water and filters for drinking, bathing, cooking. The water tasted great--much better than the Kona side. At times the water pressure is low, just something you get used to. My only concern in the kitchen was the quality of knives and cookware--very dated and poor condition. I realize people abuse these items, but the reason I choose houses over hotels is to cook healthy meals, and this was hard with these pots and pans. I would consider updating them. There is a nice table and chairs outside for dining, which we did all the time to enjoy the view. The location is about 30 min south of Hilo but the drive was pleasant and in our time here, we traveled into every district and major attraction on this island. Grocery stores (Foodland has great poke in the deli) are close by as are bigger stores like Walmart where you can get things you forgot. The landscaping is also beautiful at this house and I enjoyed looking at all the interesting bushes and trees.

The views are breathtaking. This property easily accommodated our family of 2 grandparents, 2 adults and a super active 8 year old boy. We spent 85% of our time on the spacious lanai enjoying the ocean waves crashing into the lava cliffs. There were sand toys, a boogie board, reusable grocery bags and a cooler that we made use on our days out exploring the various beaches. There are a few mosquitos but that didn’t deter us from spending time outside. We explored the cliffs and saw turtles, huge turquoise fish and even an octopus! We would definitely stay here again. The house has plenty of ceiling fans, floor fans to keep you cool at night. We slept with all the sliding doors open so we could hear the waves crashing and enjoy the ocean breeze.

What an amazing place to stay! It was very clean and had almost everything we needed on hand. We were in awe of the sheer cliffs and crashing waves just past the back yard! It was so nice to be in a peaceful neighborhood surrounded only by the sounds of waves and tree frogs. We couldn’t get enough of the ocean breeze sweeping through the house when we opened the three floor-to-ceiling back doors. The sunrises were a joy to wake up for. We knew when renting this house that we’d be driving at least 30 minutes to a shoreline in Hilo where we could get into the water, and about two hours to the white, sandy beaches, but none of that detracted from our experience at this beautiful getaway. Would definitely stay here again!

First of all let me start by saying that the house is just amazing and well maintained. However, I am just deeply disappointed by Vacasa management. This was the second time that I did not receive the checkin instructions till the last day, and I had to call a few hrs before flying to get the checkin instructions. Then they have a very early checkout of 10am, most hotels and vrbos have 11am or 12 pm. We asked them to allow to check out at 12pm as our daughters are doing online school till 12pm and need access to WiFi. They refused flat citing some covid nonsense. I think these big companies like vacasa are loosing the personal touch that was very welcome with vrbos, and I hope more owners use local management agencies.

Because we were hosting family for thanksgiving dinner, we needed a spacious, well-equipped kitchen. Because we were staying in Hawaii, we needed (ok, wanted) to be near the ocean. This house was perfect in both ways. Only thing lacking was a turkey baster. No surprise there. Beautiful, waterfront neighborhood, expansive view, comfortable beds, newer linens, huge lanai. Great for a family or 3 couples.

This is a very nice home in a great location. The view from the spacious lanai is spectacular! The home is very clean and supplied with most items you would need for your stay. It is located in a nice , quiet neighborhood but not too far from grocery stores, a few restaurants and shops. Hilo is about a 30 minute drive. Communication with property management company was excellent. We very much enjoyed our stay. Thank you.

We looked at pictures of this house when we booked and when we arrived it was even better than the pictures described. The house is clean and well stocked. However, the best part of staying at the house was the location! It’s literally right on the ocean! The views from the porch are amazing. The best part is that there is a cute little path from the house leading you right to the ocean cliffs. You sit on the lava rocks and enjoy your coffee and watch the sunrise. If you are on the cliff and look to the left you can see a sea arch! I highly recommend this place!

We absolutely LOVED our stay at Hale Kai. The home was very nice and the setting was gorgeous. We felt comfortable the second we stepped in the door. The binder with information about the house, activities, shopping, etc was invaluable. We took it with us when we ventured out each day.

I am going to the Big Island since 10 years now and this was the fifth time I stayed in a rental house in the Haiwaii Paradise Park. In the 10 years I am going there not much has changed, it's still the laid back ,non touristy part of the Island. The house we stayed this time was spot clean, a very big functional kitchen with everything you need. The veranda around the house is right at the ocean and I live sleeping to the sound of the waves. We barbecued every night, good service that the gas bottle for the barbecue got changed within hours after we called. Actual the only thing we missed in the house was an umbrella. It rains a lot on the Hilo side, so you need one .

We absolutely loved it. Such a gorgeous view and the house is just as special. So incredibly clean, open and bright. The neighborhood is wonderful, and the road the house is on is perfect for walking each morning. Everyone's so friendly and it was just the best stay! The property management was exceptional in communication and we overall had a wonderful experience! The only thing we would suggest is more comfortable living room furniture. The couch and chairs were really hard/firm - if that were replaced, it would be perfect!

This is a great property. We almost always rent homes when we travel and this is one of the best units we have stayed at. It is a well-built home with a great design. From the deck there is a spectacular view of the water, which the pictures don't do justice. The living area is open and spacious. It comfortably accommodated our diverse party of four and could have handled six without a problem. Kitchen has all the necessary features. Another plus is a small open office that looked out on to the ocean, but is set back so I could work but still have a great view. The beds were comfortable and the bedrooms were quiet. Also the place was immaculate when we arrived. The location is great. Close enough to Hilo and also Pahoa and other small towns. Great secluded roads for running, and just .3 of mile down the road is access to a trail where you can hike along the coastline for miles.
