This was our FAVORITE place to stay during our 4 island - 4 week trip. This home is beautifully designed decorated and constructed. There is beauty in its simplicity but you will have everything you need. The views are spectacular and we loved the location near Pa’ia, the Road to Hana, and Haleakala. My only regret is we couldn’t stay longer.

My wife and I traveled to Hawaii for our first time and choose to stay here. It was a fantastic experience. Being able to see the ocean from our deck was awesome. John was a great host and offered great restaurant recommendations and made sure we had everything we needed for our excursions. The location felt secluded and away from major tourist areas which is what we wanted. Very peaceful. Would highly recommend!

The place was exactly what we were looking for - beautiful, open to nature, care in every detail and away from the touristy parts of the island. Reading in the hammock swing for hours looking out over the treetops to the ocean was an absolute dream, and John was incredibly gracious, communicative and helpful. We would love to come back!

We really enjoyed our relaxing and refreshing stay at the Pole House. It is unique in every way and beautifully built. Felt surreal taking in the amazing views from the balcony, including the gorgeous sunrise and sunsets. Loved waking up to the cool breeze, sounds of nature, and panoramic views of the sky and surrounding forest. It was the perfect location for our Road to Hana and Haleakala adventures. John, the owner, was very welcoming, kind, and accommodating. He made sure we had everything we needed and more. Enjoyed our conversations and listening to his stories. He was a very gracious host and we appreciated his helpful suggestions. Thank you, John, for a wonderful, memorable getaway.

The construction of the house reveals itself to be pure island perfection. Location is close to Paia, the jungle view to the edge of the sea from wraparound porch is perfect. The sunrise and the birds are joyous. The peacefulness and beauty of this property are beyond compare

We had a wonderful 2 week stay at the Pole House. The beautiful house with cathedral ceilings opened completely to the outside and you really enjoyed the feeling of being in the rainforest. The house is a little rustic but that just added to the charm. Though in a neighborhood with houses around, the view was nothing but rainforest and the ocean in the distance. Rainbows over the forest were spectacular. The host was always available and was very helpful and informative. The location was very convenient to the road to Hana, and the beach at Hookipa.

My husband and I chose this property for a three night stay before going to the beach. We enjoy exploring various parts of Maui and having unique experiences. This property is definitely unique! John the host is a delight and the house has everything you need for a relaxing stay. The views are wonderful! We would be happy to stay here again.

We thoroughly enjoyed our stay. John was an outstanding host. He was very accommodating to our needs. The house is absolutely perfect! John built it with his two hands. Love the different woods. Location was perfect to reach all areas of the island. If you want an authentic Hawaiian experience, stay here!

The pole house is one of the most unique and amazing places we have stayed at. In addition, John is an amazing host. He is very down to earth, has great stories, and works hard to create a great environment for his guests. Last time my wife and I visited Maui we stayed here. We enjoyed it so much that we planned our second visit to Maui based around being able to book the pole house. We love being able to open up all the doors, the view of the trees, the ocean in the distance, and the quiet neighborhood. While we had many adventures on this trip: hiking into Haleakala, driving and hiking the northwest area, hiking south of Kihei, and enjoying the beach - the pole house is our version of paradise and we plan to stay here again on our next trip to Maui.

A little slice of paradise. Private and serene yet close to all of the things that we wanted to see and do. Every second we spent in the home seemed like something out of a dream. Beautifully appointed. We particularly loved the way that we felt surrounded by all of the sights and sounds of the jungle. Felt like we were staying in a luxury treehouse with an ocean view. John was a fantastic host. Attentive and friendly without being intrusive. Highly recommend.

The pictures sell it enough, but what the pictures dont show is how equally incredible the host/creator of the house is. Our host was second to none, amazingly kind and generous. Tons of laughs, intrigue and beauty emanate from this property and it will add more to your trip than you would ever suspect. Much Mahalo - can recommend enough.

We had an absolutely incredible stay! It can be a little hard to find but only because it is so private and secluded in the best way. But that was no issue because our host John was there to help from the very beginning, as he continued to do throughout our entire stay, sending up grocery items and fresh fruit. It rained our whole trip but it was no issue because we didn’t even want to leave. About 10-20 minutes from groceries & restaurants. Wonderful wonderful stay!

This is an exclusive, isolated paradise that John has built. Although in a residential neighborhood,it's set deep inside a beautiful plantation with lots of incredible plants and trees. It's high up above the surrounding area and offers views of lush canopies and then irth coast ocean. Location is peaceful and isolated but close enough to local town Paia and literally at the start of the road to Hana we managed to drive to haleakala and also the south coast easily from here too. Nearest sandy beaches are a 15 min drive away but surfing beaches are closer . The house itself is far beyond what the listing shows. It's the highest quality of design with expensive wood work throughout and an impressive sliding door system on 3 of the 4 walls, allowing fascinating natural air conditioning. Lots of beautiful sculpture work and art around and unique is an under. John himself is a great guy. He made himself available to us and is very interesting as well as helpful. We personally don't enjoy interacting with hosts but the little time we made to speak to him, he was very generous and fun. Just a note to ignore the woman complaining about ants. Shocking how petty people can be. The property sits in the most pristine natural landscape and is open air if you leave the sliding doors open. Of course there would be insects but all we had were ants crawl over some open banana bread we left out of the fridge. No drama at all! Not sure when we'll be back in Maui but we'll stay here again.

My wife and I loved our stay at the Pole House. I will start with the view. You are elevated and there is nothing but green between you and the ocean. Sunsets are fabulous. The wrap around deck is so serene. It is utterly quiet other than the rooster and other birds. The house is an open air design. We chose to open it up during the day and close it up at night and had no issues with bugs. The kitchen, bathroom, shower, etc. are all really good. The online photos are accurate. The owner John has lots of extras he can loan you for activities. We borrowed yoga mats and weights to use in the morning. Also thermoses for hiking. He had a lot of beach and recreational items. If you need something just text him and it shows up. Next is location. It is about 30 minutes from the airport. This is the green lush side of the island. The occasional afternoon rain shower was gorgeous. You are just a few minutes from the Hana Highway. It took us an hour and fifteen to make it to the the Haleakala summit for sunrise and a once in a lifetime experience. The town of Haiku is about 10 minutes away for restaurants and groceries. Paia and the beaches are not much farther. It is a perfect base to explore from. In summary this is a fun stay for adventuresome couples looking for something out of the ordinary.

The Pole House is an awesome place to stay and John is a great host. We had great weather and having the doors open for the entire stay was a great experience. John is very attentive of your needs and even gave us fresh fruit. A truly great place that you should definitely try if you can. Great location for all the sights on eastern/north Maui.

October 2023
Never stayed in a place like this......we had three walls of sliding doors open the entire visit.....fresh air and tropical surroundings with ocean view. John was a gracious host and very attentive to any needs we had. Sat on the deck in the evening watching shooting stars and rainbows in the afternoons. Very special place. Comfortable bed and stocked with anything one could need.

We had a wonderful stay at the Maui Adventure Villa Pole House. The house itself is a beautiful handcrafted home with great details through out. John was a great host, with little details like fresh fruit, flowers and local roasted coffee beans. We would highly recommend this property to anyone looking for a private escape in upcountry Maui.

Why stay at a cookie cutter big resort? Look at the pictures of the property. Enough said. The host is a great guy who can answer most any island questions you have. We will stay here on our next trip. Beautiful place.

June 2023
My husband and I really enjoyed the pole house. The views are beautiful. It was relaxing to leave the doors open for the fresh breeze and the listen to the rain while we slept. Setting on the deck at night was great for looking at the stars. If you want to stay in and watch TV or play on the internet you wont be disappointed. John was always available to help us with anything we would need. He has everything you would need to enjoy a day at the beach from towels to bogie boards. He even has coats for staying warm at the crater. We kept our food in the refrigerator or sealed in plastic bags. We also made sure to wipe off the counters each time we had food out. We did not have a problem with bugs. One thing to keep in mind is this house does not have air conditioning. Therefore, the floor to ceiling doors are kept open to let the breeze flow through. This does let a few bugs in because they are attracted to the night lights. We did not feel this was a problem. You need to realize you are in an open house with nature all around. Relax and enjoy the change in pace.

My wife and I absolutely loved this place. Impressive, well built construction, and incredibly unique. It’s more than just a place to sleep, the pole house is an experience you don’t want to miss. We kept all the walls open the whole time we were there to enjoy the open air. It is quiet, peaceful, and tucked back in a very safe neighborhood. Plenty of privacy from all angles on the balcony no other homes can see you and you can’t see them. There is a perfect balance of being in nature and very nice amenities, nice large bathroom, big stainless steel fridge that looks brand new and squeaky clean on the inside, and a fully equipped kitchen with anything you need. Super clean and comfortable. If you are worried about cleanliness with it being an outdoors open air house, don’t be. Everything was impeccably clean when we arrived. If you see reviews about bugs or ants, it’s people that will find a way to complain about anything/everything. We had several geckos on the walls and ceiling but never any ants. There was a nice steady breeze the 3 days we were there and not one mosquito bite with all doors open all day and night. The host, John, could not be more welcoming, friendly and accommodating. He will help you with literally anything he can. We can not recommend this place enough. Book it! You won’t regret it!

We looooved the Pole house. It was absolutely perfect. you can tell a lot of love and work went into creating the space. We love to explore so would adventure out on hikes or to the beach during the day and return home to relax and watch the sunset in the evening. John is the best host. We was very responsive and kind. He provided everything we needed for our stay. We were happy to get to know him a bit and would love to visit again in the future.

John was a great host, going above and beyond to help us! The accommodation is beautiful and in a peaceful setting, away from the crowds. Yet it is also only a very short drive to beaches, Up Country, the Road to Hana, and so on. The accommodations large folding doors opened up allowing for a peaceful breeze. We highly recommend staying here.

April 2023
Thoroughly enjoyed our stay! It’s an adventure finding the place but worth it. It may be helpful to know that the 2nd story rental is above the property management office, so it’s not completely private. And it can be noisy when windy (which is often the case): doors rattling, weather vane creaking and bamboo scraping the house…. If you are a light sleeper, bring your earplugs! We were delighted with the owner who was friendly, easily accessible and beyond generous - offering boogie boards, extra towels, beach chairs and a cooler, fresh picked oranges and yummy dinner suggestions. It felt like he would have moved mountains had we asked. This property has so much personality and amazing rainbow beach views every morning. You won’t be disappointed!

April 2023
We really enjoyed our stay as both the location (~750 ' ASL) with a view of forests and the ~2 mile distant sea, as well as the style of the accommodation .... nice older furniture, large doors to let in the trade-winds, and cool items of decoration. For instance, the bathroom windows were all portholes with sea-invoking pieces between the inner and outer panes. John, the host, was personable and went out of his way to be helpful ... Thanks John!

From the first communications to the last, John was fantastic. He welcomed us as if we were family and made us feel at home in this incredible property. It was an absolute delight to rest and relax amidst the beauty of the "jungle" as my three year old called it. The sights, sounds, and smells associated with this completely open home are unparalleled - be prepared to absorb it all before returning to reality :) An added bonus was enjoying the best bananas out there! So grateful to have spent time here and to have had the opportunity to meet John!

This is a slightly rustic cabin setting with fantastic treetop views. The secluded location is tranquil and private. John is an excellent host. He provided good advance directions and showed us around at check-in. He was very helpful and flexible. We enjoyed visiting with him. We would definitely be happy to stay here again.

March 2023
We did not want to stay somewhere that was crowded or busy. We wanted a private and peaceful place to retreat each evening and that is exactly what we got. The covered decks provided shelter from the rain and a beautiful view over the rainforest canopy and out to the ocean. We ended up getting in very late and the host graciously did some shopping for us ahead of time. The host respected our privacy but was always available when needed. We felt that both we and our visit were appreciated and there were no chores or weird rules to follow. This was a great launching spot for all of our excursions and a wonderful spot to relax in the evenings. The pole house has a tropical Hawaiian vacation vibe that we fully appreciated.

Our host was very accommodating and accessible. John was flexible with our dates and arranged to have a vehicle available for the whole stay. Ask him about the details but it really added flexibility and value to our trip. The pictures do not do the property justice. It is a beautiful villa with wonderful views. 5 stars all around.

Incredible views from all angles of the home. Host was very accommodating, going above and beyond expectations, including recommendations and personal touches that met the interests of me and my children. Such a unique property with a great central location to see so many great parts of the island. Would come back if we find ourselves back in Maui!

While "Upcountry" may not be for everyone, we loved it. John was great in answering any questions before we arrived and when we were onsite. We saw no ants. Just follow the instructions, and do not keep food out; we kept all food in the refrigerator. If you want to enjoy Maui away from the crowds - this is the place to go. Hoopika beach is a great spot to view sea turtles and surfers! We enjoyed Paia and Makawao, both offered good food options and shops to browse.

I am so happy I found this place! John is an amazing and caring host who went out of his way to make sure I was set when I arrived. He also checked in throughout the trip to see if there was anything needed. The house itself is incredible, beautiful views, super peaceful and a designer's dream with all the incredible wood and hand crafted ideas by John himself. It is really a unique property. It is close to everything I wanted to see and I was so happy to go watch Jaws kick off on an epic surf day as it is just down the road. His place comes fully applianced and has a special calm about it. I would highly recommend it to anyone and I know I will definitely be coming back.

We had a great stay at Pole House. Tucked away in upcountry Maui, it was in a lush forest with views from the lanai looking out to the trees and the ocean in the distance. John was a very attentive, accommodating host. He made sure we had everything we needed including fresh bananas as well as equipment such as snorkel gear. He was very easy to communicate with. Yes there are some critters around and ants if food is left out, but this is to be expected as you are out in the woods. We would definitely stay at Pole House again in the future.

January 2023
Overall lovely place in lovely area. Architecturally this place is a unique find. The wrap around lanai was great. We loved the location and neighboring town PAIA. Host was attentive, offering fresh fruit and in home chef services. Note that the property is not 100% private, there are other homes on the land, far enough away to not see people but something to mention and the pole house is above the maintenance quarters. John was there each morning as we left for the day and we could hear someone was present intermittently while we were in the house. Not a big deal just making a point of it, as my husband and I are always looking for the most amount of privacy possible when we book. John was candid about organic farming techniques and we anticipated some bugs, just be ready for them and he did provide bug spray and bed netting. We don’t mind, but those traveling should also be comfortable. We have never seen more spiders in our travels then in Hawaii! This was not just John’s, this was throughout our stay. Someone said it was the season? I personally think they are so cool. Place is nicely equipped with essentials, WIFI was reliable. However A few upgrades would be nice for the place to be 5 stars!

January 2023
This home is beautiful, location gorgeous. But by night 1 hundreds of ants swarmed my toiletries, beside the sink. Focusing on the good, I moved them all to a high wall shelf. Day 2 there was a swarm in the light fixture above the cooktop— the helper cleaned it out, & the flowers left for us had to go outside bc 100s of tiny ants covered the dining (the only) table. Day 3: with nothing else organic left out, bananas above the frig were totally covered, they were washed off & put in toaster oven which, yes, became filled with ants. A container of hair conditioner left on a side table brought ants through our clothes. The host had peppermint spray brought to us & asked us not to get/use anything inorganic. There was no other help offered. We sprayed everything, & for days had left NOTHING out. We realized we’d stopped eating meals in because the ants would cover our plates before we could eat a meal. Day 4: my daughter put in her plastic retainer & — yes indeed— ants had gotten inside the sealed plastic case & were in her mouth. When she was vomiting & crying I resolved to leave the next day, 3 nights early. We moved to a very simple but clean high rise condo. The host has refused to refund me for the (3) nights we left & even became verbally abusive when I relayed this story (“You’re the one with ants coming out of your mouth! “). Despite how grotesque it was, my kid was willing to go around & take photos of the piles, & armies of ants which, honestly, was completely too disgusting & upsetting for me to manage. Now we are waiting to see if VRBO will step up & refund our 3 nights. I’d still have decided to leave bc it had become a horror movie, not a vacation.

November 2022
We thoroughly enjoyed our stay at John's place. It felt like being in a tree house and we slept each night with the doors wide open to the tropical breeze. My husband spent a lot of time sitting out on the wraparound deck at treetop level, watching the birds. The place was perfectly located for doing the Road to Hana drive, as well as the journey to the Haleakala volcano. The location was also conducive to our "discovering" some very good restaurants in the Upcountry region on the way back from our day trips. All in all, a very good stay - thank you John!

With the Pole house John has created an amazing experience. The house has great views of rain forest and the ocean. The location is great, just off the road to Hana with easy access to Paia Beach or the upcountry. The house was clean and well provisioned. Definitely will look for this place on our next trip.

November 2022
The Pole House exceeded our already high expectations. From the panoramic ocean view, waking up to rainbows filling the horizon, to John sending up fresh apple bananas and some delicious dried ones too in a basket pulley from down below the wrap around deck. The experience was top notch! John was a delight to work with, was available if we needed and had so many great recommendations. A great location for doing the road to Hana, and sunrise at Haleakala. The house was clean! The design of the house was amazing, especially the accordion doors that opened up the 3 walls to let the trade winds blow through. It was the experience we were looking for, and we’ll definitely be back someday.

November 2022
The property and grounds were as described and they were lovely and perfect for a relaxing stay. We went out to beaches and sites by day and enjoyed long mornings and evenings at the PoleHouse. Really great.

Our stay at the pole house was awesome! We loved how it was tucked away on the property so we had our privacy. John is a great host and has a wealth of knowledge about the area. Would 10/10 recommend staying here!

This property is truly special. The climate and the location of the property allow one to effectively "live outdoors" overlooking the ocean in the distance with full creature comforts. John is on top of everything and truly "gets it" as a host. We really enjoyed our stay. Jose & Pascale

We had an incredible time at this property. It is very unique as described in other reviews. The architecture and engineering themselves make for a great visit. The open air concept is Different, but it’s perfect for the Maui experience.. Our host was excellent. We even shared in a professional chefs dinner experience at the house the night we were there. Great location to explore Hana. True Hawaiian experience,

This property was absolutely fantastic. The views were amazing. The property was easy to get to, super quiet. The lanai was a great place to relax and enjoy a cocktail or coffee. It rained one of the nights we were there, and it was amazing. I would definitely stay again.

When I asked my husband what his favorite part of our Hawaii honeymoon was, he said the Pole House. It was so relaxing at night with all the doors open to catch the breezes, and in the morning having coffee on the lanai. John, the owner, was great - very kind and responsive. The house is unique and an alternative to staying on the beach, which is what we were looking for for part of our trip - a more authentic Maui experience. We recommend the Pole House and would stay again.

We did really enjoy our stay at the pole house. It was very spacious and we loved the sliding open doors all around. We loved the location of the place. The only 2 things were the driveway is kind of hard to find and there were a lot of ants in the kitchen and bathroom at all times.

As others have noted, the pictures of the Pole House just don't capture how amazing it is. We stayed here with our teenage son (14), and we all just loved it. Tons of space for everyone to have their privacy, a fully stocked kitchen, super comfortable beds, and great wifi. The bifold doors and open concept make you feel like you are living in a treehouse. The wrap around porch makes for some awesome views. We had no issues with bugs, and didn't find the heat to be a problem - the breeze and extra fans made for great sleep. John is a wonderful host who goes out of his way to make sure you have everything you need, and his knowledge of the area and suggestions were appreciated (Baked on Maui for breakfast was a highlight!). I especially enjoyed the fresh avocados just outside our door! The Pole House is a great home base to explore Maui - right on the road to Hana and close to some spectacular beaches. We appreciated being away from the intensity of the tourism on the island that we found in other areas. If you like to travel but like to be off the beaten path a bit, this is the place for you. It's a really special place. We can't recommend it enough. Thanks John!

So happy that we chose this lodge blindly simply based on online reviews and we really enjoyed our 4-nights stay at this place. It's a beautiful unique house so well decorated and equipped with everything we would need but more than we can expect for. The house is surrounded with all the natural beautiful scenes and a really quiet place to enjoy a relaxing local life (except the very morning rooster that would wake you up!). Our child loves this house so much and felt upset he had to leave. The host John is a great person and so nice to talk with. We hope we can return next time!

August 2022
The property was better than the pictures can convey. Between the views and the breezes, this is everything you could hope for in a quiet, rustic stay. The host, John, was as pleasant and helpful as other reviews describe. We made it through a few days with no real bug-related issues but did get several bites on the final night; plan to use the provided mosquito netting or some repellent if you're sensitive to insect bites. Overall, we loved it!

Staying at John’s property was one of the highlights of our trip to Maui! The house he has built is incredible and gorgeous. John is an attentive, caring, and gracious host, we felt like we were staying with an old friend. I ran into some car trouble and John was there to save the day! I really cannot thank him enough. He is resourceful, smart, and such a good person. I’m so glad we found this on VRBO and highly recommend it to anyone looking for a unique experience on your vacation. We woke up to the sounds of roosters, rainfall, and crickets every morning, it felt like a dream. The house is well-stocked and had everything we needed. John also has 2 more properties (within walking distance) on his land so if you have friends & family that want to all stay near each other, be sure to inquire with John. We hope to be back again sooner than later, Mahalo!

We couldn't have been more pleased with our experience at the pole house. From an extremely well designed structure (my husband and I couldn't stop remarking how much we admired the wood details and custom teak furniture) to the wonderful view, natural lighting, high quality cooking tools, plethora of adventure gear, and above and beyond host John - we left feeling that we got to experience the best of nature, luxury, and people. The trade winds are amazing, so the temp is always felt perfect. The porch has a large overhang, meaning you can actually hang out outside or keep the window doors open even in a downpour. My 4yo daughter loved everything, but was especially fond of the whimsical pulley system to haul up fruits. As some other guests have mentioned, the more open design does invite some bugs and geckos into your space, but we found that the critters were really contained and didn't bother us. Only thing we wish we'd taken advantage of more was the host - a great person with interesting stories and local intel. We look forward to coming back and staying here again sometime soon!

Oh boy, where do I begin. We've stayed at a lot of places over the years, but this was BY FAR the best experience. Highly, HIGHLY recommended. - the location. If you want to get off the beaten path / avoid the beach crowds, or simply just experience this wonderful area of Maui, John's place is in the perfect location. Just close enough to everything to be convenient, but at the same time feeling entirely secluded and away from it all. - the house. The pole house itself is absolutely amazing. As you walk up the stairs, you can't help just feeling overwhelmed (sweeping ocean views from the deck, lush jungle, banana trees, it's all there) and with the open layout and amazing door set-up, you feel like you're a part of it, rather than just observing. Pictures don't do this justice - it truly is one-of-a-kind. Yes, being in nature will mean there will be the occasional bug or gecko, but that just adds to the experience and nothing a mosquito net or just plain common sense can't handle. The craftsmanship and just how well this place is thought out and maintained is so apparent, truly one of the most amazing places we've stayed at. - the host. John is a wonderful, wonderful host and an even more amazing human being. My fiancé and I stumbled upon a situation where we found a lot (a LOT) of cats and kittens in need, and John went absolutely above and beyond and offered up his time and resources to help out. What was planned to be a couple days of relaxation turned out to be a stressful multi-day cat rescue mission, and John was there with us! Even before / without all that, John went out of his way to make ourselves comfortable (in more simple, non-cat related ways) and he clearly cares about and loves this place . Super, super host! If you're still reading, we absolutely loved the experience. The house and its location are amazing and John made our stay unforgettable. Amazingness.

This was my all time best experience with a VRBO. The Pole House is the most unique place you can find and made our trip to Maui truly special. My wife and I stayed here for 5 nights on the first leg of our honeymoon and this house made the trip for us. The pictures don’t really do the house justice — you are essentially entirely outside in this house, yet completely protected from the elements. This does mean you will encounter some critters and may want to sleep with the provided mosquito net — I imagine this may not be for everyone but we loved it. It was akin to the most glamorous glamping you could imagine. The other thing to note about this property is its location in North Maui. It is essentially bordering a rainforest, so it may rain often during your stay. You are also pretty far from the main resort areas on the island, and will need to drive about 20 minutes to get most places — when staying at the Pole House you want to minimize your driving time. I would strongly recommend staying here for Road to Hana and Haleakala excursions, and use your remaining time to explore Upcountry, Makawao, and Paia. John was one of the most involved and respectful hosts I’ve encountered and made sure we were comfortable with everything during our stay. I will be recommending the Pole House for years to come.

The Pole house is one of a kind. Beautifully nestling in the trees and bamboo, it stands proud looking across an incredible vista of trees and ocean. With its fully surrounding balcony and three walls of bi-fold doors, it provides a wonderful living outside feel. The deign and details are clearly well considered and executed, from the beautiful island cooking unit, to the indoor hammock, to the open layout and high ceilings and many more besides. John is a fantastic host, always attentive when needed and open to chat and share stories if asked. His communication both online and in person was impeccable. The location of the Pole house is perfect for Maui. The Road to Hana starts just there, the wonderful Baldwin Beach (recommend by John) is a short drive away, as is the gorgeous little town of Paia. It was also easy to drive to Haleakalā and Kihei from here. The photos on here do not do this place justice at all. It will definitely exceed your expectations as you watch the sunset, eating dinner on the balcony. On the first night, we were treated to an incredible fresh fish dinner with 5 star treatment which was a service John had offered. It made for a great start! The only thing we would change is to hire John’s car on Turo to make the logistics even easier. If you’re looking to stay on the beautiful island of Maui, this is definitely the place to stay!

Location was away from the crowds and afforded a peace you can't get on the resort side. The house was beautiful, fully furnished. The host was super friendly and gave us multiple suggestions for food and activities. Overall 5 out of 5 stars!

The Host was excellent! The home was unique and we enjoyed it. Peaceful and relaxing property you feel very connected to nature. Keep in mind with all the doors open you may get an occasional lizard, bug etc. Overall it is an excellent choice!

This was our third time staying in the Pole House. We scheduled this trip around the culmination of the SCUBA Diving certification for our two college aged sons. The host, John, helped coordinate of the dive training and even accompanied our boys on their dives. The house is well furnished and it was very comfortable for all four of us. It is in a convenient location. In addition to diving, the family managed surfing lessons, and some exciting hikes - - be sure to ask John about the bamboo forest trek! There is a bbq with outside tables, chairs, umbrellas, etc. We liked the bars and restaurants nearby Paia, drinks at Mama's Fish House and the bakery/cafe/wood-fired pizza spot within walking distance! We rented the new Toyota Highlander hybrid from our host. John met us at the airport and we were off, so, no standing and waiting in line for a car and the rate was competitive. We've seen the other two rentals on the property, the 3 bedroom/2 bath house and the 2 room Evergreen Cottage, which are also on VRBO, and we are anticipating coming back with a bigger group so where we can all be together on one property. All in all, highly recommended!

We booked this property for a few nights to upgrade our remote working environment and it was so fantastic. The views here are amazing and the wifi was really reliable. The area is quiet enough for relaxation but also not too far of a drive from some good dining options. The property manager was friendly and helpful. We would stay here again in a heartbeat!

My husband and I fell in love with the pole house & its tree house like setting. What a unique & beautiful place to stay! The home has lots of little touches to make it warm & inviting (including fresh picked bananas on the counter & flowers on the table). The wrap around bifold doors open up to amazing views of the area. We were sad to leave. Thank you, John, for being such a welcoming host!

Staying at this pole house was the best part of our trip to Maui. The house and setting were even better than pictures. We loved being able to open most of the doors making the house very open. We even kept some of the doors open at night. The house really made us feel like we were in a secluded wooded setting. The western views were amazing. You can see trees, the outline of the western mountain range, and the ocean. Sunsets were really nice, we saw many rainbows, and even a moonbow! The property location was also excellent for getting around the island. Hana was a 90 minute drive. Haleakala crater was around 75 minutes, driving to the south shore beaches took around 45 minutes. Also, the host, John, was very friendly and accommodating. As an example, we were able to borrow some beach chairs and umbrellas at no extra charge. Overall, John is very committed to his property and to making sure that his guests have what they need. We plan on staying here again the next time we visit Maui.

Maui’s most breathtaking stay. I brought my mom for her birthday vacation and she was breathless when she saw the home. The photos do no Justice to how gorgeous and peaceful it is in person. It’s secluded yet, right down the road from grocery and local eateries. John communicates well and ensures that you have everything you need while there. Take time to communicate with him so that he can make sure you’re safe while on the island. The water for the shower was hot every time. And the kitchen was ample with all the items we needed for cooking including seasonings, pots, pans, utensils, cups, etc… In the beds, we fell asleep fast and woke up well rested each morning which was important in order to seize the day early. Our road to Hana tour guide was super excited when she heard we’d be starting in Haiku because it was ahead of all of the other tours along the trip. We beat all of them because of our location and got a really private experience. Everything was wonderful. 10/10 would recommend.

We stayed at the Polehouse for 3 nights and had a great stay. Wonderful view from the walls of windows that open completely up. Rustic kitchen (we are avid cooks) but adequate for cooking most things that you would probably cook on vacation. There was also a grill. Bananas from the property were provided and were delicious! We would stay here again.

John was fantastic! He was very accommodating and friendly and even let our son cut down a banana tree! The house is a very unique, one of a kind passion project. It was a great privilege to stay in a place where somebody's blood, sweat, and tears went into building it. It is truly a one of a kind house and we couldn't have found a better place!!

The pole house is a one of a kind place. It was lovely to stay in. The feel and views are as represented in the listing. John was a fantastic host. We had everything we needed. We enjoyed learning about growing and harvesting bananas. This is the perfect place if you are looking for a unique island experience with beautiful views and an alternative to the typical resort/gated community experience. It is centrally located, ideal for exploring the Island. There are 2 other units on the property to accommodate larger groups.

My wife and I had an amazing experience at the pole-house. John was a fantastic host and had great recommendations for local activities and food. Everything was as expected, if not better. It’s definitely not a “resort” property, so if that’s what you’re looking for, you’d best continue your search, but we loved it for being such a luxurious space in an otherwise rustic area. We can’t wait to return!!!

My husband and I stayed in a beach resort condo for the first part of our Maui vacation, and then moved to the pole house for the remaining portion. We were hoping for a different Hawaii experience and this property delivered! It is a great location for exploring the beaches and communities on this side of the island. The house is “rustic” in its setting and the ability to open the walls to the outdoors, but also offers luxurious details such as robes, crisp white linens, pretty green glass dishes, and beautiful wood floors and ceilings. The nautical decor is eclectic and pretty. The kitchen is perfectly equipped with all of the pots, pans, dishes and utensils needed to prepare meals here. Which is great since you will want to be here to watch the sunset and then to view millions of stars from the deck. John is the perfect host and is immediately available to answer questions. He was very accommodating for both check in and check out, providing us with a place to store luggage and even to shower before our evening flight. This gave us the entire final day to enjoy the island. We would definitely recommend the pole house to anyone who is looking for a different Maui experience and who doesn’t mind a few insects and yes, geckos, indoors.

Our stay at the pole house was amazing. Laurinda was super helpful with everything we needed, from citronella candles to boogy boards and great local advice. The house itself is beautiful and the morning view of the north shore from bed is truly awesome. The only thing better than the house was the perfect location, minutes from Paia town and right at the start of the road to Hana, with access to great hikes, waterfalls, and beaches. We will be sure to stay again next time we’re on Maui!

An amazing home crafted with terrific details! We loved our relaxing stay and slept great with the retracting walls to catch the evening breezes. The kitchen is very well appointed and the indoor/outdoor living area was great for dining-in and afternoon relaxation. John is a great host and we will definitely return to this property on our next visit to Maui!

We had an awesome stay at the Pole House. Phenomenal views from outside and inside, overlooking the ocean, West Maui mountains, and forests. It's a convenient home base to explore the island, with shops and restaurants minutes away in Haiku, and all kinds of access to surrounding areas. The owner/host is super friendly and helpful, going out of his way to ensure a great stay. Really well appointed kitchen if you choose to cook. We'd definitely recommend staying here to get away from it all (and other tourists)!

This was by far one of the coolest properties we've ever stayed in. This is the sort of house where you make a point of finishing your day at a certain hour so you can go back and enjoy the property and the view with a cocktail in hand. John was a wonderfully accommodating host. This was actually a really great place to easily reach all other parts of the island for day hikes, specific restaurants, sunset cruises, etc. The only potential drawback is that you are definitely one with nature here. If a gecko in the evenings or the beginnings of a new garden spider web in the mornings will ruin your trip then you should probably look to a more traditional property. We kept the doors closed in the evening (there is still plenty of ventilation as well as a couple of powerful fans) and we didn't have any problems with mosquitos and my husband is usually a magnet for them. Definitely a memorable stay.

At Maui Adventure Villa, you can experience the natural beauty of the island off the beaten path, but be just minutes away from great restaurants, waterfalls, hiking, shopping and beaches. John is a fabulous host and the Pole House an architectural masterpiece that offers a unique alternative to your Maui visit. We are so glad we came here!

Great experience!! John was an amazing host! He was friendly and informative of activities, eateries etc around the area. The pole house was very clean. We enjoyed the option to stay open to the outdoors during our visit. Made for a glamorous tree house feel. However , the all slider open option includes a few small extras houseguests :-) ie gecko/s My teen daughters also enjoyed their stay as well !

Both the host and the property are absolutely amazing. The host is communicative, more than accommodating and just an over-all fantastic person. He went out of his way to make my parents stay everything I had hoped for them and more. The home is private, exquisite and perched in the heart of paradise with views from all directions. I won't find a better location for your next escape! We will absolutely be staying here again.

My wife and I spent 4 lovely peaceful days at John’s lovely property. He brought us bananas and avocados and was easy to communicate with. The house is lovely, well equipped, can be completely opened on all sides. We will try and stay here again on our next visit to Maui!
