That's where you'll be when you enjoy an unforgettable vacation at 'Hale Kekaha', our only premium ocean front unit, just 26 miles from the Lihue Airport, and a world away from the maddening crowds. With an average annual rainfall of less than 20 inches, you can almost guarantee yourself a sunny vacation... regardless of the time of the year. This non-smoking plantation style unit is located near Waimea Canyon (the Grand Canyon of the Pacific) and Barking Sands Beach, with convenient access to restaurants, movie theater, shops, markets, and the famous Jo-Jo's shave ice. Quality furniture and linens, tile floors, and lots of windows to take in that view. There is a gas BBQ to make it a pleasure to cook at home.

This is no tourist trap. There are no hotel resorts, no vendors hawking cheap souvenirs. Just an endless expanse of pristine beach and warm surf and spectacular sunsets, with friendly people who offer the 'spirit of aloha' with each greeting. It's like traveling back in time to the Hawaii of yesteryear, the perfect getaway from the cares of everyday life.

Swaying coconut palms, balmy breezes, sandy beaches, warm ocean water, and days of sunshine. All the ingredients for a perfect ocean side vacation in Kauai, at Hale Kekaha.

Hale Kekaha Palms Ocean Front Reviews

The location of this place was amazing. Views of the beach across the street, close to hiking, beaches and the town of Waimea, comfortable beds, all made this a great place to stay when visiting the Southwest end of Kauai. We were a bit concerned about the proximity of the road but as it turned out it was no problem at all. We used it as our homebase for hiking and other activities on the south shore. A rare find for sure.

Nice and tidy place to stay for a week while visiting. Pros: spacious home, listen to and see the ocean, nice cookware and a good kitchen, very nice backyard area. Two cons: there’s is a main road in front, and you hear traffic it’s far away from other beaches and other areas of the island, so as long as you’re okay with driving to most restaurants or snorkel spots, this is a great pick.

The condo was very clean. There is a nice beach just up the road. It was nice to sit outside and enjoy ocean. There is road noise but you get used to it. We like the west side because it’s not developed. No big resorts. Just local businesses. Short drive to Port Allen for boat trips.

The house was clean and had everything we needed to cook breakfast and dinner most days. We loved staying across the street form the beach and enjoyed the sunsets most nights.

We liked it fine, didn’t really spend much time in it. Was a bit too far away from the nearest town. Clean & comfortable.

We stayed in Kekaha 20 years ago and again chose Kekaha for our 8 night stay in January 2024. This rental is ocean front. There is a 2 lane road between you and the ocean, but not a big deal for us. I listened for the nightly ocean and wave pounding instead of morning traffic. And the night sky is awesome, stars almost to the horizon. Mind you that the inshore water is tinted red from the Waimea River, but blue further out. We felt we got more bang for the buck in Kekaha which is away from the touristy Poipu, Kapaa, or Princeville. We did not want to be in a resort or a sea of condos. A huge, sandy beach is a 5 minute walk and sunsets everyday (beware currents). You will not find the crowds like at Poipu! The property hosts were available and courteous. The unit was as listed and the kitchen was outfitted with everything you need. Washer and dryer were great, internet was fine (if you have to work as we did), and the beds were comfortable. We did use the grill which was practically new and taken care of. We used the provided beach chairs and towels. Please note that there are no restaurants in Kekaha, but one the the local markets has good takeout. Wiamea has a very good grocery and several places to eat. Hanapepe Friday Art Night is a great event not to miss. If we go a third time, I would look at this property first. Aloha.

Wonderfull apartment with everything you need. We probably enjoyed the shower the most and the kitchen has everything needed - cooked a full Turkey dinner for Thanksgiving. The location is absolutely fabulous and I enjoyed every morning the straight view to the ocean when opening the front door. The whole fam would love to come back - maybe one day…

We will definitely visit this home again on our next visit to Kekaha. The home is perfectly located 1/2 mile from our family and directly across the street from the beach - You can hear the waves crashing 24 hours a day and the view is heavenly. We had everything we needed.

This was an amazing getaway for my wife and I! It’s is so quiet and peaceful! The neighbors were great, the beach stuff was a great help and the ac unit in the bedroom was awesome! Thank you for sharing your beautiful condo with us to help us celebrate our anniversary! Mahalo!

Location is right across a long gorgeous beach. You do see the sunrise and sunset on this beach. Great open house set-up. The cart by the kitchen i rolled in front of the door so I can chop and watch the Ocean. Great place to stay if you have family. Scott was very responsive and accommodating. Place was clean. Thank you!

We both really enjoyed staying here! Very clean. The road noise wasn’t a problem at all for us because there isn’t that much traffic. We loved being right on the ocean. Heard the waves crashing a lot. Soothing. It is on a quiet area of the island. The bed was comfortable and we were so glad the owner had beach things available; chairs, towels, noodles, snorkeling things. All of that came in very handy! Waimea State Park was close by and we attended church at Waimea Baptist Church. Friendly congregation. We would recommend this place!

We have had a wonderful stay in this beautiful cottage. It is well stocked, very clean and comfortable. You can’t beat the view from the spacious covered lanai. It’s so nice to fall asleep at night, listening to the sound of the waves. Best VRBO experience on Kauai.

There is a highway between the house and the beach with traffic noise 24/7. Inadequate cooking/kitchen equipment/supplies Poor lighting and 3 burned out bulbs in kitchen/living room area Constant road noise; need window a/c unit turned on constantly to lessen the impact from traffic noise Good access to great beach Nice grill Bedroom door into bathroom needs to be planed so it shuts more easily Dryer keeps popping the breaker so it’s unusable

This was the absolute perfect location for our family of four! Falling asleep to the sound of the waves every night. Yes, there is noise from the highway, but you just need to look and listen beyond that. It's a very easy walk to Kekaha Beach Park which is amazing for walking, running, a little swimming/boogey boarding, and sunbathing. We really enjoyed this quiet side of the island, being able to walk or bike to convenience stores and the fruit stand, and it's a very short drive to restaurants in Waimea. It had plenty of space for four adults and the beds and linens are very comfortable. We did not use the A/C, just opened the windows as this area feels very safe. The kitchen is well-equipped with cooking utensils, but there are no pantry staples like oil, salt, pepper, etc. Therefore heating up and cooking store-bought items is totally doable, but you would need to purchase a lot to really prepare a meal. Again, this worked great for our family, but just letting others know! I would guess that food spoils quite easily in the Hawaiian climate, and that is likely why they can't keep a pantry as some other VRBO's do. Overall, a wonderful stay, Scott was an amazing host and very communicative. Checkin and checkout were totally seamless as well as all of the information he gave us prior to arriving!

What a lovely time spent on the west side of Kauai & and in a waterfront condo in Kekaha, to boot! The birdsong, ocean waves and sunsets reminded us to just be. And it was easy to "be" in this space. Everything we needed was available and at hand. Grounds and condo were very clean and well kept. Worries were left on the mainland...at least for a couple weeks in Dec :) We were able to take in a local festival, take daily walks to greet the morning, and say good night to the sun while sipping wine from the patio. Thank you for sharing this wonderful space with us, and we hope others will find the same joy as we did.

The check in and check out process was seamless. The house was clean and just the right size for our party of four. Walking access to Barking Sands beach. Loved the ocean front view. Such a great stay!!

November 2022
Extremely quiet and peaceful with extraordinary views. Very easy to find and access the key. There is a blender and toaster included in the stocked kitchen. The front porch was used every morning and evening. As mentioned the guest bedroom gets very warm even with a fan but the master bedroom is very cool with a/c. We were so appreciative of the beach chairs and towels. There were bikes but one was flat and broke when my husband attempted to pump it up. We reached out and received a text but the bike was not fixed during our stay…definitely not a deal breaker. We have stayed in PoiPu twice but not again. If you are looking for a truly relaxing getaway that is not a tourist spot, don’t hesitate to stay here. The road traffic never bothered us once and the stars at night will knock your flip flops off.

We thoroughly enjoyed our time here! The place was clean, the kitchen had everything we needed, and it was just a comfortable place to come back to each night. Having the use of the beach chairs and also a laundry room were really helpful and a great convenience. The sunsets each night, hearing the ocean waves, and being on the quiet side of the island gave us another wonderful aspect to our time in Kauai! Truly a great place! Highly recommend!

We spent 5 days here relaxing and working from home. The house is very comfortable, ocean just across the street, and beach a 5 min walk away. Look out in your email for the check-in info, it is not in the app

My family and I had an amazing time in Hawaii at this property!! We were steps away from the beach, and the front patio was to die for. The inside was just as relaxing, with all the amenities you need, as well as surprise things like beach chairs, sand toys, bikes, and even more. Cannot recommend this place enough!!

May 2022
Beautiful property! The condo was cute and had everything we needed. It was very clean and the beds were very comfortable. Quiet neighborhood across the road from the ocean. The road can get busy but it certainly wasn’t a bother. The air conditioner is only a window unit in the master bedroom and it was a bit noisy. There are a lot of things for the beach in the garage which was really nice. Two markets and a few restaurants are a only minutes away as is a nice beach. Would highly recommend!

April 2022
We love Kauai and decided to try out a vacation rental this time, rather than a hotel. Definitely pleased with our decision! This cute and comfortable rental provided everything we needed and then some, including lots of beach gear and toys. It was so nice having breakfast with a view of the ocean each morning and listening to the waves at night. It’s a little farther out from some of the main attractions, but it was that quietness we were looking for. Only complaints would be the lack of AC in the second bedroom and some traffic noise from the road, but those were not deal breakers at all. Truly enjoyed our stay!

April 2022
We had a wonderful 11 days here enjoying the beach, the sunsets, the space in front and back of the condo. Being in our 70's we liked being on the main floor with no one above. There were beach chairs and other beach equipment in the garage for use by any of the tenants. I think there are only 3 or 4 units here. The one beach umbrella was broken, but that was fine with us. The road in front was busier than we thought it would be given the location of the cottage. Since we were out hiking or walking the beach so much it was not that much of a problem. The air conditioner is a single window unit in the the master bedroom. It is very old and very noisy. We turned it on during the day when we weren't there and just opened windows for the evenings and nights. Lots of silverware and dishes, etc. All the appliances worked fine. We would recommend this place and overall gave it four stars. PS: Arrive before dark, very hard to find on our first night. Enjoy!!

April 2022
Had a nice time and would recommend it unless you're hot natured. We did fine with the overhead ceiling fans. There was a brand new little window air conditioner in the bedroom, but couldn't sleep with it on as it cycled off and on all night. I liked opening the window and listening to the ocean instead. Cindy was a help when I had problems with the washer. Enjoyed our stay on the less busy part of the island. For those that want to save some money, go to Big Save in Waimea and get the hot plate lunch. It was huge and enough for the two of us to share for dinner. Go early at lunch time and bring it back to put in the frig. The cost averaged about $9 for it. It was nice to have the use of the beach chairs, also.

Nice 2 bedroom condo directly across the street from the ocean...beautiful view. Comes complete with bikes, coolers, ocean toys, chairs, etc. Washer and dryer. We had a small problem that the host took care of immediately...very responsive and easy to deal with. A great time overall.

January 2022
Very clean, well maintained property. Beautiful sunsets, beach very convenient. Kauai businesses (at least near where we stayed) was a little slow. By that I mean there were limited hours, and limited businesses open, I assume relating to the pandemic impact? We enjoyed the Canyon park. We did discover quickly that the highway that runs in front of the property is pretty active, and the road noise is quite noticeable. Later in the evening the road noise would reduce a fair amount and the ocean waves were very nice.

Our first time staying on the west side…will definitely be back! The view from this little house is AMAZING. It’s small but worked for two adults and one kid. We purchased food at the grocery store on our way in and a weeks worth barely fit in the fridge. It’s a small one. So just a heads up! There is no dishwasher, but that was fine to just wash as we go. The washer and dryer is shared and in the garage, we didn’t have a problem with using it. There were tons of beach chairs, umbrellas, toys and coolers, so nice to have! Especially the umbrellas since it get really warm and there is no shade on the big beach across the street. The beach is about a 10 minute walk and was perfect for wave jumping and lounging. As others have mentioned this house is in a residential area with no hotels, restaurants or grocery store. The closest is about 10 minutes away (which is totally fine for us). We really enjoyed the laid back vibe and taking morning runs along the road out front. The road is busy starting first thing in the morning…so you will hear cars drive by (fast too) but if you can look past that (we eventually tuned them out) then this place is for you. Thanks for sharing your vacation rental with us!

This house was what made our experience in Kauai the most incredible. The westside is definitely the best side. We were so happy with the ease of check-in, how clean and wonderful the home was, and the view of the sunset everyday from our front yard. Lot's of beach toys to use and great communication. We will definitely rent this place again!

We could not be more pleased with our stay!! We felt right at home. This condo was absolutely perfect and met all of our needs: cookware, coffee pot, beach toys, beach towels, washer and dryer, plenty of room for a family of 4, and a gorgeous view of the ocean! Being able to both fall asleep and wake up to the sound of the waves crashing was wonderful. There are a couple grocery markets within a few miles that made it convenient to grab groceries as needed. The host and management were very accommodating. After 8 nights, we are sad to leave, but anxious to come back as soon as possible!

We loved everything about the location. Ocean just across the road. Owners were very nice and helpful. Unit was clean, bed was comfortable. All amenities at our disposal. The only thing we would change would be updated and more comfortable furniture in living room. Otherwise perfect. We didn't want to leave!

The title for this review says it all! The west side of Kauai is the best side. Beautiful location, close driving to most areas, not super touristy and the amenities at Hale Kekahaha were not like anything we've experienced in Kauai before! Thank you for giving us access to tons of beach gear and towels, toilet paper and paper towels. Clean, bright, cozy beach house! We'll definitely be back!

June 2021
Having never been to Kauai before choosing the location was kind of a throw of the dice...we felt like we hit the jackpot! Things that we value that Kekaha provided are lack of tourist traffic and traps (understanding that we too are tourists!), proximity to the ocean (right across the road...literally steps away and visible/audible from both bedrooms), ability to engage somewhat with local cultural experiences, expansive sandy and unpopulated beaches that allow for miles of quiet walking. If these things align with your values and travel objectives then you will not be disappointed. There is pretty consistent (mostly local) traffic on the road across the street from the house but we were soon tuning into the noise of the waves vs the cars and it really didn’t bother us at all. Also used and appreciated was the hammock and gas BBQ in the back yard. Mahalo to those who keep up and clean this lovely property—the memories made there and every sunset viewed from “our” beach won’t be forgotten!

We needed a respite and this was the perfect place! We loved the nearness of the beach, the courtyard and the hammock! Great location if you are interested in hiking the Waimea Canyon. Kekaha is at the end of the road and we loved it!

Hale Kekaha Palms was a great first place to stay on Kauai. The proximity to the quiet, clean, and beautiful beach across the street couldn't be better. The yard is nicely manicured with the softest grass I've ever felt on my feet. The beds are very comfortable. The (admittedly loud) AC unit in the master bedroom does a good job of drowning out any of the pickup trucks with huge wheels and growling engines that the locals seem to love, but overall, the traffic is quite light since the house is more on the "edge" of town while still just a couple of minutes drive to restaurants in Waimea. I'd certainly recommend this property and stay again myself.

Roomy condo with the amenities you want, in a great location! Right across from the beach and close to Waimea Canyon!

January 2017
It was a pleasure staying at Hale Kekaha for Christmas and New Years. We were spoiled being there for over 2 weeks. Everything you need is provided to make for a comfortable stay, and for outings to the beach. We were pleasantly surprised to find large beach umbrellas, mats, chairs, coolers, and a variety of water equipment available. (Note that the washer and dryer are not in the unit, but in the common area where the beach equipment is stored.) Kekaha is the last town on the west side, so the location is ideal when it comes to peace and quiet. Also, having driven all around the island, we noticed that there were rainy days in the south, east and north of the island, whereas we only experienced rain for half an hour one day. Westside is Bestside! We didn't use the air conditioner at all, and had the windows open at night to keep the perfect temperature for us. There is traffic noise occasionally (and crowing roosters in the area), so if you're a light sleeper, bring ear plugs. For the days that we didn't go sightseeing, it was very nice to stay at the house, and walk across the road to the beach. We were almost always the only ones there, and it was almost too good to be true. We have been to Maui three times, so crowded beaches are what we were used to. We definitely prefer Kauai now, specifically Kekaha. The beach is so long, that you can walk along it west/north for miles. Early evening walks to watch the sunset were part of our routine. We did time it so that we would be back at the house shortly after the sun went down. (The nights are very dark.) There is an outdoor shower/hose/footwash station, so you can easily rinse sand off. If you enjoy beaches, sunshine, and a quiet place to stay, we highly recommend Hale Kekaha. Scott makes the whole booking/reservation process very simple and easy. We know we will be back!

I found out earlier in the year that my services were needed at the PMRF to support a NASA Balloon Launch. Since I had never been to the PMRF or Hawaii for that matter I was referred to the VRBO website. After looking at few spots on the westside of Kauai I settled on the Hale Kekaha for my long term stay. The location was absolutely perfect! Literally across the street from the beach so beach access was never an issue. In fact with the windows open and the ceiling fans on I had the best sleep ever away from home especially with the sound of the surf pounding just outside my window. The unit has a fully stocked kitchen with all cooking utensils, pots, pans, etc along with a gas oven, stove top and a microwave. The unit also has full washer and dryers with plenty of washing detergent and fabric softener. There were plenty of bikes, boogie boards and snorkeling equipment for recreational use and there is never ever a shortage of towels, either for the bathroom or for use at the beach. The porch features an outdoor dining table and deck chairs which offers the a great experience for dining or having an evening cocktail. Both the front and back doors feature French style doors with screens to keep the bugs and to cool the house down with a breeze. The landscaping was breath taking and I was able to get excellent shots of rainbows over the ocean with all the coconut palms in the background. There is wireless internet access to keep in touch with the "outside world" and although I never used it they do have a flat screen TV with a DVD player. The sounds of the surf and the view from the front porch was all the entertainment I needed and provided for a very relaxing stay, especially after a long day at work or a fun day of recreation. The location is just minutes away from fine dining in Waimea, the Kikialoa small boat harbor for the Na'Pali tours and road to scenic Waimea Canyon. The only complaint I have is the fact that Highway 50 does separate the property from the beachfront and the sound of automobile traffic can be a very minor distraction from an absolute oasis of relaxation but that is being nit picky! Overall I highly recommend this property for anyone wanting to get away from the hustle and bustle of the touristy resort atmosphere of Lihue or Poipu. Kekaha is a very relaxed town and if you did not know any better one would think you were in Main Street, USA but with a beach. As the sign says above the front doors WESTSIDE-BESTSIDE.

December 2013
We just completed a wonderful week at the Hale Kekaha home. We were looking for a quiet island location to just kick back and relax. We found the perfect location at Hale Kekaha. We arrived in the dark on Friday night. Even in the dark you could feel the warmth and friendlyness of the home. The living area seating was very comfortable. From the living area we were able to plan our next days adventure and rest from the current days activities. The internet allowed us to stay in touch with family and friends. Each day we were able to post pictures of our daily events so everyone could immediately see what an amazing time we were having. The master bedroom bed was so comfortable it beckoned you to jump in to rest for the next day. From the master bedroom you could hear the waves crashing on the rocks accross the street. Most of our activities were on the western part of Kauai, so the location was perfect. Resturants, grocery store and morning expresso were a short 5 minutes away. At the local farmers market on Saturday we purchased apple bananas that were very tasty and egg plant that melted in your mouth. We used the kitchen for breakfast, cooking vegtables and re-heating of left over lunches/dinners. We used the community gas grill to cook fresh ahi and the amberjack we caught that day. The other families staying at the same location we looking for the same relaxing vacation we were. Everyone was extremely friendly. We were fortunate that the owners Jim and Sally were there during our stay. They checked with us several times to insure we were comfortable and to provide assistance in any way they could. On our last day we were able to see whales breeching from our front porch. For us this was the vacation of a lifetime. We WILL return in the near future and hope that we can be guests of Jim and Sally again.

December 2013
If you want to experience Kauai away from the crowds this lovely home in Kekaha is THE place! It's spotlessly clean, right across the street from the ocean & you can listen to the waves through the night :- ) The Sandy beach is just a short walk west and you have both front and back yards to enjoy palm trees, hammock, lounge chairs and Island breezes. The road's in front, but behind coconut palms & shrubs and the sunsets there are amazing! Our contacts were with Mgr. Scott & Cindy who were both friendly, helpful & efficient. Try to be there Sat. @ 9 to walk to the park for a great small Farmers Mkt. Tons of beach toys are in the garage as well as laundry facilities and bikes to borrow! Extra beach towels, all the kitchen things we needed, lovely décor--I can't praise it enough--our only regret was not staying longer!

September 2013
We stayed in this house for our honeymoon and it was absolutely perfect. The pictures are exactly how the house looks. House was super clean and had everything we needed. Very low key area. The cars/trucks driving by can be loud but goes away after work hours. There are bicycles and all kinds of equipment that renters are free to use, which was great! We went to the grocery store to get our food, both markets are fairly expensive. My hubby fished across the street. No fishing license needed. If you want to go for a nice dinner, you might have to drive quite a ways to Kalaheo or Poipu. There are some delicious dive spots nearby (Island Taco & Bobbie's) in Hanapepe and Waimea also that are open for lunch. Friday nights, Hanapepe has art shows which was pretty fun. Highly recommend staying here.
