Donna was beyond communicative and responsive. The kitchen was very well stocked which made us making meals so easy and nice. We could go on a nice runs/walks and close to all fav spots in North Shore. The house makes you feel at home in the area. ❤️🌈❤️

The cottage was charming, location dreamy. The kitchen was well-appointed, gas grill very nice. By the 3rd night, we were awakened several times with what we assumed were normal tropical noises. Strangely, we found pieces of chewed wood and metal in the bathroom. We didn’t realize at the time that the sounds and debris were related to rat activity in the home. We were awakened the next night to loud scratching noises. There were definitely rats in the ceiling and walls. We saw a piece of wood nailed to the ceiling, clearly a patch, where rats had entered the home previously. There were rat trails too. The bathroom had a bad odor that can only be from rats. We notified the property host who said she’d get an exterminator (she never did), and that she would bring traps and sonic deterrents. VRBO refused to help as we had not contacted them within 24hours of check in. We did notify them as soon as we realized the rat problem. We looked for alternate lodging on our own and found nothing available. We spent little time in the home and continued to have sleepless nights due to the rat activity.
We felt the host lied to us. Not only that she said she’d get an exterminator and didn’t, but she said she had never had this problem before. Ceiling patch, and bags of rat poison in a storage room that clearly had been there before our stay, told a different story.
We are grateful for the partial refund we did receive. But are left with a bad feeling & wonder at all 5* reviews.

This was was a COVID-delayed return to the north shore and Kauai for my husband and myself, both 75 and active. This property worked very well for us and we really appreciated the location and setting of the property. One of the constant pleasures was hearing delightful bird songs - and I am not referring to the chickens, which are also to be heard. Donna is responsive to concerns, but also does the unusual of communicating potential problems, such as road work or beach closures. That extra effort on her part was particularly thoughtful.
Overall, we had a thoroughly enjoyable week here.

I have been looking forward to staying near tunnels beach for a few years, this was a great location to spend time watching the sunrise and set over the Na Pali coast. The house is great and the ground floor living space is a huge added bonus. A privacy fence and gate make this house feel like an oasis and all the plants give an excellent separation from the neighbors.
This house is situated in a small quiet neighborhood which is the experience I was looking for.
I am looking forward to my next trip back to this house.

Beautifully maintained and well-appointed property. The management is very responsive, both prior to arrival and during stay. Looks just like the photos with great outdoor areas on ground floor. Very walkable spot, both to all local beaches including Tunnels, as well as very close to the local coffee/pastry shop as well as Opakapaka grill, which is a real plus in this community, to have a happy hour / restaurant so convenient to walk to.
Will definitely stay at this property again.

We wanted to escape the busyness of much of the island closer to Lihue and this was the perfect spot. Princeville is much more of the club/resort community feel which is great if that’s you, but we like to escape where you can get more of a local vibe and have quick access to the less crowded beaches. Hanalei is a quick trip in one direction and Haena/Tunnels is the other.
The big outdoor areas were great for relaxing after or before hitting the sights. My son loved chasing and catching all the frogs & lizards too!
All the beach equipment and toys made things really easy and we felt at home. We never even bothered or thought about turning on the TV during our week stay which is saying a lot for us!
The living room a/c is currently not working well, but wasn’t a big deal to us. The ceiling fans made it manageable. The owner explained the unit is under warranty but having troubles getting anyone out to take care of. She offered to bring out a portable a/c but we declined… just wasn’t a big issue for us while we enjoyed the Paradise!

The house was really well situated a walk to the beautiful tunnels Beach and in a quiet neighbourhood. Donna was very quick and helpful to respond to any questions we had and the house was well stocked and supplied with lots of extra living space outdoors with many different seating areas. My only small negative was that the air conditioners in the bedrooms were really noisy so tended to wake you up as they turned in and off during the night. But the location made up for it

This house made for a wonderful stay while in Kuaui. It was just as beautiful as pictured and conveniently located close to some great snorkeling at Tunnel's Beach. Something that I loved about this house was how well it was stocked with supplies. Most notedly, there was a lot of gear for our beach outings (i.e., chairs, umbrella, cooler, snorkeling fins, etc). It was also really nice being away from the more crowded areas. It is next to a road, but that was no problem, as it isn't hectic, especially at night.

We absolutely enjoyed our stay at Barefoot Hideway! It was exactly what we were looking for during our vacation on Kauai's North Shore. A very cozy home tucked away in a quiet neighborhood in Ha'ena, just 6 miles north of Hanalei. Close to Tunnels, Ke'e Beach and 3 blocks away from the Hanalei Colony Resort. We spent our evenings enjoying the outdoor living space. The owner, Donna is extremely friendly and very attentive. I highly recommend this vacation rental for anyone who wants to experience the relaxing Aloha local vibes on the North Shore!!

I say the jungle but you’re actually surrounded by the most lush greenery and it’s perfect. The house has everything you need and more and is conveniently within walking distances of multiple beaches. If you are looking for a place that is a little more remote but surrounded by gorgeous mountains and plants, this is it.

This is a lovely nicely decorated home located in a tropical paradise about a 12 minute drive from the town of Hanalei. It has a beautiful downstairs lanai with comfy couches and loungers.
The kitchen is well stocked with appliances, pots and pans and spices. The owner has thought of everything with providing ice chests, beach chairs and umbrellas as well as instructions to operate the televisions and fans.
It is a short walk to the beach along a road without sidewalks, but it was not a problem.
We will definitely be staying at this property again!

Seriously, a lot of love went into this place and it shows. Everything was thought out and we never wanted for anything, even with flood warnings and unpredictable weather on the north end (weather does what weather will), the place made us feel secure and cozy. It was also soooooo fun to just be there and have THAT MUCH space to spread out in! There’s fruit trees in the yard and some cute peekaboo views of the surrounding mountains from the bedroom windows. Beds were extremely comfortable and sheets were super nice. The stars at night are unbeatable. It’s the perfect location to separate from the busier parts of the island, but you’re close enough to grocery stores and eateries in Hanelai, etc.
you’re also super close to a bar and grill, day spa, and the best areas of the ocean for snorkeling [tunnels] (took 2 minutes to walk across the street to these).

Be warned that during the rainy season there is a chance of the bridge being closed in Hanelai/ a lot of water pooling on the road. Also wouldn’t recommend staying on the north end in general if you’re trying to be south or west much of your trip. That’s nothing against the property though!! Definitely a place for respite. Beautiful outdoor garden area with lounging chairs for reading and dining tables for breakfasts and dinners. Cozy sofas, well-equipped kitchen and comfy bed for restful evenings. Quick walks to beach areas and nearby bar & grill. Highly recommend and will definitely return!

This is an excellent home for 4 people. Great location to Haena state park. Easy access to Beaches. Due to weather conditions, surf was hide and current was strong, so we were unable to safely play in the water on northside beaches. The home was well equipped to cook meals. A super cute neighbor cat visited every morning. We LOVED her! Beds were SO comfortable. Home had many seating arrangements. We appreciated the many fans for airflow. We will definitely be back.

We just loved this little spot. The home is welcoming with everything you need as a visitor but still feels like you're apart of the community. Haena is absolutly special and beautiful. This home stands up. We enjoyed walking the property and looking at the tropical landscaping. We spent most our days out exploring the island and would bring food home for dinner. The outdoor patio is so spacious and was perfect for winding down in the evening. We had a party of 4 (2 adult couples). The 2 bed / 2 bath was perfect for having our own space for getting ready in the mornings... speaking of mornings, walking down to the beach with our coffee to watch the sunrise was my favorite! We will be back.

The house is beautiful. Beds are incredibly comfortable. There are even robes to use as in luxury hotels! The kitchen is stocked with every utensil, serving item, appliance you need. We even made a pot roast one day with the slow cooker. The new grill makes the best fresh fish and burgers (ok, must give my husband credit - he is the cook of the family!). BEST LOCATION!! We've been coming to the North Shore for over 25 years. Short walk a lovely beach which had a total of 10 people on it on any day. The coffee house at Hanalei Colony Resort is a nice morning convenience as well. And if you like daily walks, you will love the neighborhood and scenery. Truly could not have asked for anything more!!

We had an amazing 5 day stay at this awesome property. The home was clean and airy with a great kitchen (we love to cook), SUPER comfortable beds, quiet neighborhood, and everything we wanted for our stay. When at the house we spent most of our time enjoying the beautiful downstairs area - during the day with the fans on was perfect to relax. It was also awesome that there was lots of covered area so even when it rained you could enjoy being outside. The sprinkles on the awesome cupcake were the stars at night. We enjoyed looking up at the Milky Way most nights. Location wise we couldn’t have asked for better - close to various beaches, hiking (we used the shuttle to the state park), Hanalei and Princeville were a quick drive to grab groceries, loved the more quiet/less bustle than other parts of the island, and great farmers markets. It is a decent drive to the other parts of the island - we like road-trips so this was a non-issue but if you don’t like being in a car or want to get to things quickly this is the only thing we could think of that would be a “heads up”. We greatly appreciated detailed information provided prior to our stay as well as in the house book and various FYIs provided around the home. We needed some assistance one day and Donna was quick to respond and on it. Wonderful host, home, and all around experience. Thank you Donna!

The house was a perfect jumping off point for us. Easy access to some of the popular snorkeling spots that can be impossible to get parking at if you stay anywhere else. Walking distance to the beach and a little coffee shop and restaurant, but drive into Hanalei or beyond for the best food. House was very well stocked as was the kitchen. There were lots of little extra things around that saved buying a whole bottle of bug spray when we only needed it for one day. AC was great and separate in each room so we could stay cool at night without having to cool the whole house. Flora and fauna are beautiful in the downstairs area and everywhere. Don’t miss the stars at night! The only thing I wish I had done differently was to arrive when it was still light out. The one way bridges are something to get used to and the road is winding, but nothing that can’t be managed as we did arrive after dark. Our stay was wonderful, would love to go back!
