The neighborhood is located just 15 miles from the historic town of Hilo, home to a large variety of shops, restaurants, and entertainment opportunities. At the end of Maku'u Drive, there is an oceanfront park where you can watch for whales that frequently pass by. At the opposite end of the neighborhood, at Kaloli Point, set off on a two mile trail that leads through the jungle and out to Ha'ena (Shipman) Beach (this is the only beach on this side of the coast with swimming access). Pahoa Village is a little over seven miles away, while Hawaii Volcanoes National Park is only 26 miles southwest.
