Start by exploring the oceanfront Papio Ocean Park just a mile and a half down and then head back a mile to Railroad and see the old lava flow areas. Pahoa itself is a fun spot to explore and is only about six miles away. You can grab a smoothie, pick up some groceries, swim at the aquatic center, or grab breakfast at Pele's Kitchen. For family fun, head toward Hilo about 20 miles and spend a half day at the Panaewa Zoo or touring the Mauna Loa Macadamia Nut Factory. Ask for samples!
