Mauna Kea Resort announces a $180-million renovation with no rollout plans as of yet, other than the April - November 2024 closure of the Mauna Kea golf course under the direction of Robert Trent Jones Jr. with visionary work of Robert Trent Jones Sr. and both sons Reese and Bobby Jr. Other plans include 252 hotel rooms, new spa, and dining venues. Resort pool will close for a short time as they relocated the spa. The resort tells us the renovation will be done in stages and won’t really affect amenities too much.

This beautiful home is equipped with everything you need. Every kitchen item you could need is there (and high quality too). (A keurig would be a nice addition - the current single serve coffee maker doesn't fit standard pods.). The pool and hot tub are wonderful and great spots to watch the sunset. The outdoor bbq area is fabulous. Donna is fantastic, super responsive and helpful. Notes about the development where this property is located: Obtaining privileges at the resorts is recommended. There is a nice pool at the close amenity center but the resort access is worth it just to have easy access to Mauna Key and Hapuna beaches. (We saw cars getting turned away often from the public access points because they were full.) The Seaside Tennis Club at the Mauna Key is spectacular. We had a few tee times at the renowned golf course but unfortunately they were cancelled due to the wind. Both resorts are an easy five minute drive away, so a rental car is necessary. Otherwise a 40 minute walk and pedestrians are discouraged. It can be windy. During our 8 day stay no beach umbrellas were allowed. Just something to consider, we're told this is typical for that side of the Big Island. On the flip side, little rain. Lots of options for groceries, all 20+ minutes away. Take half a day and go to the Costco in Kona if you can. Overall a wonderful time and we can't say enough about Donna!

The minute we walked into this home we were relaxed. The views are gorgeous, the amenities plentiful and we could not have asked for a more perfect set up. We plan to rebook.

Our stay in late summer 2023 was first-class. The home is beautifully appointed with original art and comfortable furniture. We were greeted with an adorable welcome gift from Donna, the fantastic host. Here’s what I think will be useful to future guests: The central air conditioning worked really well, but the mornings and evenings were cool enough to enjoy fresh air through the enormous sliding screen 'wall' that borders the lanai. The kitchen had everything we needed in terms of pans and tools, and the appliances are all best in class. The amazing shower stall that exits to the private outdoor courtyard feels straight out of Architectural Digest. Practically every light switch has a dimmer, so you can really set the mood. And of course, this home has a wonderful pool and spa. The spa is surprisingly private given the expansive views, and it was unforgettable being in the water under the stars. Other highlights were watching the sun set over the horizon and the backyard’s gorgeous plants. The community was very quiet. There aren’t really any cons, though be aware that the home is in a quiet part of the island. It’s about 40 minutes of highway driving away from Kailua-Kona, the nearest town with the most stuff to do on the island's west side. Fortunately, smaller but cute Waimea is only about 20 minutes away, and has numerous restaurants, grocery stores, etc. Highly recommended!

My wife and I enjoyed our stay at the Waiulaula Villa. The house was just as advertised - spacious, well-furnished, great outdoor spaces and located in a peaceful community. We especially enjoyed the pool, spa and outdoor kitchen. The striking sunsets each evening added to the ambience!

We had a lovely 8 day stay at this villa and thoroughly enjoyed the pool, view and accommodations. It’s also great to be able to use the two hotels and their beaches just down the hill. Would definitely stay here again! Donna was an excellent host as well!

We go to the Big Island every year for the last 15 years and always rent a home. This was the most well appointed home in the Wai'ula'ula community that we have stayed in over the years. We will definitely be coming back and hope to stay here again!

We’ve stayed in the Wai’ula’ula community before and this house was wonderful! Well equipped, clean, and the ocean views are beautiful. Bedrooms were comfortable and quiet, and having our own pool and hot tub was such a bonus. It was also nice having smart tv’s for quieter evenings. Easy to get to and from the Mauna Kea, and purchasing the resort privileges was absolutely worth it!

This is a spectacular property. It exceeded every expectation and is exceptionally well-equipped. It is ideally located to reach every major Big Island site. We chose to forego the resort membership and we’re glad we did. We were on the move every day. Also, all the resorts allow limited parking and beach access on their properties, so you can enjoy a resort beach with an early start to your day. This home’s neighborhood also has a stunning pool and credible gym just a 5-minute walk away.

The villa is huge and lovely. The pool and hot tub are small but great. One of the nicest grill setups anywhere. Lanai was beautiful. Outdoor shower was amazing. Access to the two resorts was expensive but lovely to have. My family had an amazing time!

We loved this home! It is gorgeous, spacious, and a short drive to two of the most beautiful beaches on the island. We took advantage of the resort access and really enjoyed using those facilities. Donna was so easy to work with and made our stay even easier with her quick and helpful communication. We are already talking about booking it again!

Beautiful and very well appointed villa. The resorts are beautiful but they do require a drive - not within walking distance. Agent very accommodating.

We are returning guests to this property and already can’t wait to come back! First stay was just my husband and I, second included our 1 year old son and my parents. Everything was just perfect, it felt like a luxury vacation but with all of the comforts of home (especially important having a 1 year old!) combination of resort access plus ease of renting a home was perfect for a family vacation. We are already planning our next trip back and are so thankful. Double master is perfect for 2 couples, my little one slept so well in his comfy room in a pack and play. What an incredible week!

This home was a wonderful vacation spot for my family when visiting the Big Island. When we weren't exploring the beaches or volcanos, I particularly enjoyed reading on the lanai. The house was well equipped with everything we could need - from cooking equipment to home supplies. I'd definitely go back again.

A very beutiful property that has all the amenities needed for a fun stay. The property has the necessaties you would find in your own home from cooking utensils to iPhone chargers. I would strongly recommend leveraging the properties at Mauna Kea as they are two of the nicest beaches on the island. It was great to break up the days we spent at the beach and used the pool in the afternoons. The villa is on one of the best locations in all of the Big Island as you are close to many great restaurants at Mauna Lani, Manua Kea, Waikoloa and The Fairmont. Donna was responsive and also available to answer questions during our stay. A great quiet and comfortable stay!!!

We had a great stay in this well appointed home. In addition to the pool at the house, the amenity center has a nice pool and decent gym within walking distance from the property. This unit was absolutely perfect for our needs.

We just spent a week at the villa and it was everything we had hoped for. The property is immaculate. The location is great with several shopping areas within 15 minutes. The lanai and pool make for a perfect gathering spot. This is a must stay property.

The unit is laid out great for a couple of families to stay together. The rooms are huuuge, each bedroom has an en suite bath, and finishes are high-end. The small pool at the unit is perfect for young kids. We also enjoyed having the options of the community pool (about a 10min walk or 2min drive) and the two hotel beaches+pools (~5min drive). Resort amenity includes complementary valet, so process of popping down to the hotels to swim or eat breakfast was super quick and easy. I wish there was a grocery or market nearby, but otherwise it was just about perfect. Highly recommended.

The house was great! Fully stocked, great views, perfect location and a wonderfully designed house and interior. We love the Mauna Kea Resort and took full use of it every day. Little breezy this time of year but the evenings were perfect! Only suggestion is that the fan for the BBQ does not clear out the smoke from our cooking very well. Left a thick layer of smoke on the lanai as we cooked. Donna was great, as always! Quick responses and cheerful demeanor!

Our family had the most delightful time staying in this incredible house! The view is incredible and the location adjacent to the Mauna Kea is very convenient. The house is extremely well-appointed, with beautiful furniture and artwork, as well as being very comfortable and inviting. The whole-home sound and entertainment system was awesome! We really enjoyed the ability to connect our devices directly to the speakers via airplay. We really appreciated the quality and quantity of the bedding, pillows, and towels. The outdoor shower was a favorite, especially after a dip in the pool and hot tub. The kitchen has everything needed - we cooked a lot and enjoyed our family time eating both inside and outside on the lanai. We also appreciated the many beach toys, boogie boards, and other helpful supplies in the garage. The manager, Donna, was very responsive to our questions and delightful to work with. We can’t wait to stay here again!!

I would gladly return to this property. The house is immaculate, the grounds are beautiful, and the neighborhood is quiet. The pool, spa, and outdoor shower complete the feeling of total relaxation. Our family turned off the air conditioning, opened the doors, and let the birds wake us up each morning. We chose not to use the resort access, as we had a lot of other activities planned on the island. We did get good use of the cooler, boogie boards, and beach umbrella.

We have stayed in several houses in the Hapuna / Mauna Kea communities. This was the best house! The layout is great with two large suites. A third suite has two double beds, so perfect for kids to stay together and have their own bathroom. Kitchen and great room layout really accommodate multiple people cooking and eating at once. It has a nice smaller sized pool and hot tub and then the larger, community pool is just a 5 minute walk from the house. We will definitely book this home again! Mahalo for a great experience!

We thoroughly enjoyed our stay in this beautiful villa. So clean, very well stocked, and gorgeous view. The location and the resorts were great as well. Our host was very responsive, knowledgeable and helpful - the best host we have worked with on VRBO. Highly recommend renting this villa and we hope to return some day!

I have traveled to Hawaii, and specifically the Big Island, numerous times and this was the best property that we have visited. The house was spotlessly clean, spacious, and beautiful. The bedrooms (and bathrooms/closets) are large with great storage. We cooked nightly in the kitchen (with a view of the ocean!) and ate dinner on the patio at night. The pool and hot tub were a great addition. Sunsets from the grass area were gorgeous. (Although if you can catch them at the Mauna Kea beach you won't be disappointed!!). We definitely recommend paying for the hotel access at Mauna Kea and Hapuna Beach resorts - being able to show up with just your sunscreen and leave umbrellas, towels, and chairs to the hotel was absolutely worth it. Donna was wonderful to work with, and made our stay so easy. I can't say more about how great the villa and experience was. We are still talking about what a fabulous trip we had. Hope to be back soon!

Beautiful and lovely Big Island villa! Fantastic views from the exceptional lanai. The rooms, kitchen and whole property are amazing. We had a wonderful stay and would definitely return. The use of the two resorts was a nice bonus, but the onsite pool and workout area are both excellent. Amazing place for sure.
