THIS IS A SPECIAL ADDITION TO THE DESCRIPTION OF OUR MAUI HOME IN THE WAKE OF THE TRAGIC FIRES OF AUGUST 8 IN AND AROUND LAHAINA TOWN.

Aloha. By now you have already seen stories and footage of the loss of our beloved Lahaina along with at least 115 lives and 1000s of properties. I have been keeping a blog of sorts since the day after the fires to keep the many concerned people in our extended Ohana up to date on developments here. It is purely from my point of view, so take it for what it is. If you are interested in reading it in its entirety, you can find it at the link below:

https://acrobat.adobe.com/link/track?uri=urn:aaid:scds:US:2801cb8d-3b13-3325-8137-5789530bf7f0

Here at our condominium complex of Lokelani, we are fortunate. We were well removed from the fires and suffered no physical damage, just lost power for about a week and TV and Wi-Fi internet access for almost 3 weeks. Our area of Honokowai, about 10 minutes north of Lahaina town, became a center for many of 5he evacuees who suffered catastrophic losses. We are currently housing a number of displaced folks at Lokelani condos, and continue to look for ways to support our grieving community. If you would like to help, there are many fine charities providing support on Maui, and if you follow my link, I provide information on several.

I am providing an excerpt from my most recent blog entry that provides my response to several questions I have received on returning to Maui. For those already scheduled in our condo, please note that you continue to be welcome. If for any reason you do not feel the time is right for you to come out, all cancellation fees are waived, even if you make your decision at the very last minute. We will also match donations in whole or in part to any of the Maui recovery causes I include in my reports. Mahalo for your time and attention, and below is the excerpt from my blog.

On the topic of coming back to Maui, and when, I’ll give you my opinion, which I’m sure is just one among many. First, it’s clearly got to be a personal decision. A lot will depend on what you want in terms of a Maui vacation. If you’re looking for a ‘party-hearty’ Maui experience, now is probably not the right time. Lahaina town is in ruins and will be years in recovery.  Local spirits are depressed, including among those far from the devastation.  Businesses are struggling to be open and offer their full range of services and menus because of the lack of customers. For those who recognize that these are extraordinary times and not everything will be the way it was before, however, coming to Maui is a concrete way to give back to the island, local businesses and people. You can choose to be part of our recovery as surely by spending locally as you can by donating to the sorts of causes we’ve discussed previously.  But don’t let me dissuade you from doing both!

This opportunity to help now by visiting thoughtfully is particularly true in the south, center and upcountry where the fires were either absent or not as severe.  Parts of upcountry are under some water restrictions, but in general everything is there and ready for visitors. The west side will obviously take longer to recover, but the businesses here need the support as much or more than anyplace on island. Places to stay will likely be in short supply for a while as we need to offer housing to our many friends and neighbors who lost their homes to the fire. Locally in Honokowai, more businesses are opening daily, though many with reduced hours and menus; see this interesting NPR piece on Java Jazz, which never deviated from normal hours after the fires.

https://www.npr.org/2023/08/29/1196251537/this-cafe-never-closed-after-lahainas-fires-extending-a-lifeline-of-normalcy

Both because of the lack of customers and to help the community, many restaurants have and still are providing free food to all comers.  For shopping, the Times market is well stocked (well, at least as much as it ever is…), and Napili Market is also going. Nothing is yet open at Lahaina Gateway due to water problems and because the parking lot is entirely consumed with recovery and relief stations. The Cannery mall and Safeway appear undamaged at least from the front, but because access to Front Street is so tightly controlled, I don’t know when we might see anything re-open there.  The few places on the fringes of town that apparently survived the fire will likely continue to be closed for the foreseeable future. Returning to anything like the previous status quo will be a gradual process, but we are making baby steps.  We will get there.

In this, we are all part of a larger Ohana trying our best to help one another and recapture moments of normalcy in a situation that is anything but. Local businesses have been giving back to the community, but eventually need to get back to more typical operations. Much of their ability to do so will depend on visitors deciding to return.  I hope you will consider doing so. If you do look at coming here in the upcoming weeks and months, I recommend making sure of flight and rental car availability.  Flight schedules are still disrupted by the large-scale departure of visitors in the immediate aftermath of the fires, and thousands of rental cars are parked nose to tail in fields outside the airport. I assume the car rental agencies in Kahului are operating nonetheless, though the offices in Honokowai are still unstaffed. Do double-check these sorts of things before your trip just to be sure, and I am confident that things will continue to improve to meet the rising demand as visitors return to Maui.  See you here.

Aloha, and welcome to the virtual version of Lokelani C205, a vacation rental condo located on the beautiful West Maui coast. It's not the same as being there - hearing the ocean throughout your living space, seeing your 'morning whale' as you sip coffee on your lanai, or walking just a few feet outside to see honu (turtles) swimming and basking in the sun on your own stretch of beach. Regardless, we welcome you here as our guest just as we would be glad to welcome you into our Maui home.

Lokelani, which means “Beautiful Rose” in Hawaiian, is a West Maui vacation rental that truly lives up to its name. Snorkel with the turtles, watch whales & breathtaking Hawaiian sunsets from your two spacious lanais and fall asleep to the gentle sound of the Pacific in your oceanfront two bedroom town home-style condo.

Lokelani #C205 has been completely remodeled. It is a luxurious two bedroom/two bath unit with both the living room and master bedroom having direct ocean front lanais. This unit is a town home type unit with the kitchen, dining area, washer/dryer, full bath, living room and direct ocean front lanai downstairs. Upstairs you will find a full bath and both bedrooms. The master bedroom has its own direct ocean front lanai with panoramic views of the islands of Molokai and Lanai. A split air conditioning system with units in both bedrooms keeps you cool in the warmer months. Flat screen TV's and DVD players in living room and master bedroom entertain.

This unit is nicely equipped with everything except food and clothing. On the days you don't feel like dining out in one of the many great restaurants nearby, our kitchen has all the utensils, cookware, and dinnerware you'll need. You can watch the sunset while eating dinner out on the lanai, or if on the rarest of occasions the weather isn't perfect, there is also an inside dining table.

We are located just a few miles north of downtown Lahaina and historic Front Street. We are in a quiet residential neighborhood and we are off the main street to insure a peaceful stay. You will not want to leave our beautiful Maui home of Lokelani C205, but you'll definitely want to come back!

PS--. Please ask about our Lokelani C205 guests Discounts and Donations program supporting the Pacific Whale Foundation and Maui Food Bank. Registration Number: 430060160035, TA-138-225-8688-01, GE-138-225-8688-01

Our first time in Hawaii, and this little condo was great. Not far at all from Lahaina town, and Ka'anipali area, plus there are good shops, restaurants, and the food truck area right there in Honowakai in walking distance. Very private. Nice having the little beach, although it was fairly rocky offshore. Great sunset views from both balconies. Saw a turtle on our beach one morning. Plenty of space for our family to spread out.

My husband and I loved staying at this condo. The view from downstairs and the master bedroom is absolutely gorgeous and the unit felt bigger than it appeared online. We appreciated having a dedicated parking space, available beach chairs, and the ice packs to use in our travel cooler. The complex is small, private, in a great location, and we found the residents to be very friendly. We couldn’t have been more pleased with our stay!

We really enjoyed staying here and the location can't be beat. The beach was always available during our stay. Turtles came up on shore and whales could be seen from the balcony. The kitchen was stocked with all we needed to prepare meals.

Our stay was incredible! Great location with a nice, private beach. Kids loved snorkeling, boogie boarding and watching the honu on the beach. Close to other beach options, dining & hikes too!

This was an absolute delight of a rental property. We loved ever minute of it. You have a quiet location, small community pool, beach access, the most stunning sunsets. While adjusting to the time difference, I woke up in the middle of the night a few times, and just sat on the back patio, gazing and the amazing starry night - you don't get to see that many stars where I'm from! It was perfect. The kitchen was stocked nicely, so we had our morning coffee and prepared several meals of our own. I felt safe taking a jog by myself around the area in the mornings, as there were other friendly folks out for a morning stroll and good sidewalks.

Very pleased with all amenities and location. Close to clean Pool and the Ocean. The kitchen is so well equipped the cupboards are overflowing. Nice to have extra beach chairs and bodyboard.

We felt at home right away. The view incredible and we saw sea turtles every day, even a monk seal. The beach area is a nice little spot to swim. The property manager is excellent as well! Extremely helpful.

Wow! We just returned from two weeks of paradise at Kevin's wonderful condo in Maui. This unit has unmatched views of the ocean. With two separate lanais, the views just keep coming! We watched sea turtles swim by each day. The condo has access to a small and very nice beach. The beach is best enjoyed at low(er) tide. When the tide comes in, the stairs are difficult to access. There is nice snorkeling right off this beach, in the rocks. Lots of fish! The kitchen was well equipped, and we enjoyed most of our meals right in the condo. Both bedrooms had air conditioning, which we turned on right before bedtime. These units cooled the bedrooms very nicely, and after talking with other renters in this complex, we realized that we were lucky to have air conditioning! The surrounding area is older and a little quieter, which was exactly what we desired. There are numerous eating options within walking distance of the condo, including a whole bunch of food trucks! Communication with Kevin, the condo owner, was great! He sent an extensive list of things to do in the area and was quick to make recommendations when asked. The only minor suggestion I have is to buy a few more forks. That's it! If you're coming to Maui, this is your place!

This place was a amazing place. Oceanfront property with awesome sunsets. Beautiful view of the other islands. When I was looking for places to rent, I didn’t want to see other people or other condos. This place was it. It was us and the ocean. I would stay here every time

Aloha! My husband, two teens and I had the fortunate opportunity to stay at Lokelani Condominium C-205 for 10 glorious days. The condo is spacious, super clean, well stocked, and the views from both lanais are simply breathtaking. The kitchen is well stocked with everything you would need to make a meal. The reliable washer and dryer were life savers. I especio Kay enjoyed the downstair’s shower with the double heads. My daughters also appreciated the boogie boards and noodles for some beach fun. The private beach is our favorite beach! We went to many other larger and more crowded beaches but the one right outside the condo has everything you need to enjoy a good swim and snorkel. There are a few great coffee shops walking distance away, as well as a well stocked ABC Store. We also enjoyed a few meals at the nearby food trucks. The Thai one is my favorite! All in all, a magical stay in Maui! Mahalo! Angelica 😌

This was the perfect place to get away from the hustle and bustle but still be a short drive from everything. Loved waking up to the waves every day. On site property manager was very responsive.

After renting the same Maui condo until it was sold and no longer available to rent, we needed a new place to stay. Our friends had stayed here and recommended it. Great recommendation! We loved our stay. The location and views, the clean and well supplied condo, the kind and communicative owner, the quiet at night. We'd love to come back again! There was barbecue smell especially at evening mealtimes, but that is not the fault of the condo, and to be expected most any place, and it passed quickly enough!

This condo is a very nice place. It's large, quiet with a beautiful view and comfortable. The kitchen is well stocked with items. The washer/dryer is a great feature for families. The beds are comfortable and the AC is very refreshing. The views upstairs/downstairs are terrific. The condo grounds are well taken care of but are relatively modest without many available chairs by the sea wall -- but has it's own accessible beach where turtles lay. The reason for the 4/5 instead of 5/5 was a problem with our check-in process. The cleaning company never showed up prior to our arrival and left us with a dirty condo from the previous guests. The owner was contacted and was very attentive and worked to resolve our issue the same day with a new cleaning company. All told the issue was addressed within a few hours and the company checked in repeatedly during our stay to ensure things were adequate. The owner then worked to ensure we felt taken care of therafter. Although this created an unecessarily stressful start to our trip, the response was appreciated. Staffing was the reason given for the snafu which was evident as an issue throughout all industries on the island during our stay. The owner followed up repeatedly and assured us the offending company would not be in charge of his unit any longer -- and the presence of the new crew throughout the week indicates they are the superior choice who will ensure no future issues. Besides that, the location is very good and we would be looking to stay here again in the future based on both the ownership responsiveness and the quality of the condo.

We spent 2 glorious weeks at Kevin’s place. The highlight: watching whales from the lanais; yes, with the naked eye! And yes, there are lanais on both levels, our favorite ‘activity.' There is a small beach adjoining the property. If you’re a sea turtle lover you’ll be as excited as I was to see them on our beach sunning almost daily. It’s a good beach for kids The condo is located away from the road, right over the ocean so you can see it and hear it. We watched the sunset, the moon rise and brilliant stars from the upstairs lanai. It’s a quiet area except for kids playing happily. The unit was clean and everything worked. I’ve never seen such a well stocked kitchen! When we had a problem with the screen door, Kevin was on it. He was always immediately available. There are air conditioners in both bedrooms, but we hardly had to use them. The assigned parking space was close to the stairs, but you should know there is no elevator. Bottom line, we’re booked for next year! Thank you , Kevin.

Overall, we had a very nice time at this property. The host was extremely responsive throughout the booking and for the duration of our stay. The views of the ocean from both lanais is really what sells this place. The interior is nice, but nothing fancy. But the views are out of this world. We had some nasty weather come through while we were visiting Maui, so not sure we saw as much as others have, but we did see a whale far in the distance and a sea turtle the very first night we were here on the small, sandy beach that is in front of the complex. They provide some beach chairs and coolers for taking down to the beach, which were really appreciated and utilized. This spot is very close to several restaurants and a food truck park, or it's a quick drive into downtown Lahaina.

My husband , my daughter and 2 year old and 2 month old and myself spent 5 days at this property. It was perfect for a relaxed stay. The condo is in a pretty old 3 story building. This unit on the 2nd and 3rd floor. There is a very well equip balcony on each floor. Everything worked remarkably well especially the air conditioning. The property look right onto the small waves crashing onto the beach or sidewall making wonderful background music during our stay. the sunset was seen from both balconies. There is a small beach adjacent to the property but in front of the adjacent condominium. The amount of wave break varied each day. Our first day there was a bit of a current but we could still take the 2 year old in it. The other days it was calm. There was a big sandy ocean bottom that went on for a fair distance making it great place for just bobbing in the water. People mention the turtles but these are giant turtles at least 3 feet long and often longer. There was a least one on the beach each afternoon. Sometimes they would swim right by you in the water. One day there were 5. I have been to Hawaii dozens of times and seen lots of turtles but nothing like this. We also had a beached seal that was quickly walled off and protected. The pool is not on the ocean and not heated but my granddaughter still enjoyed it. There are several grills on the property and we used one each night. They worked perfectly. This condo has some wonderful Hawaiian art. In general this area of Maui is older and quieter than other areas. Being developed awhile ago means the water views are fantastic. The properties along the road are a bit smaller and not as fancy as some other areas such Kapalua or Wailea. It is easy to get to Kaanapali or Lahaina. The owners have done a fantastic job keeping this property in tip top condition. I highly recommend it.

Condo is in a great location…able to walk right out to the beach. Swimming and sunbathing with the sea turtles (at a distance, of course) was the best! The host was very responsive and patient with my questions, which I really appreciated. We would love to stay here again!

We loved being right above the ocean--sound and sights were amazing. Great small beach access. Kevin was very helpful in all the pre-check-in details that helped us know what was available in the unit. Because of some unexpected things on our end, we had to cut our visit short. Kevin was so kind and understanding and really went the extra mile to not make it difficult for us to leave. Lots of extras made the unit welcoming, from coffee awaiting us to beach equipment and ideas for things to do on the island. He is a great host and lives out the aloha spirit.

We really enjoyed the time at the condo (C205). It was just a really nice place to stay. Most of our 3 weeks was just my wife and I, but my daughter and her husband joined for a week. The kitchen was spacious and the sleeping and living areas were great. We appreciated Kevin communicating with us so easily as the time approached.
